A DAY IN SAO PAULO
What stories do we take with us from the streets we inhabit? Amsterdam based architect-at-large AFARAI and creative innovator INNAVISIONS set out on a one-day journey in São Paulo to find out. A Day In São Paulo is the first book in the Day by Day book series. This series offers an inspirational outlook on the artistic and creative expressions in the cities worldwide. In contrast to traditional books on street art, that document the work of individual artists, A Day in São Paulo tells a story that goes beyond individual styles in order to show the collective impact of urban visual artists on the way we encounter our surroundings. The endless grey high-rise city of São Paulo is difficult to penetrate for an outsider. But the exuberant wall paintings stand out and fill the streets with color. They take you on a journey through the deeper layers of this metropolis. The street artists express the heart and true character of São Paulo. Here the streets are a powerful force in communication. Brazilian graffiti has taken on a completely original form, while at the same time being part of a long tradition of cultural expression in urban space. The Brazilian street artists are not only extremely gifted, they are also socially engaged, and out to change their surroundings, and eventually the world.
