How are you? Did you know c r y i n g is six letters trying To hold together A few gauzy tears from Some small cruelty And the wrenching of a soul From its body when its body Is no longer a home?
I know
I know
I am here.
What it looks like when agony Wrings out a body When pain twists someone Into an unfamiliar, frightening shape. I heard mortal fear Once And then after I hear it again In so many mouths It jolts me awake Once And then after, Again and again.

All of this Again and again All of this Compacts Into these five letters: g r i e f—

Vanitas With Fishes A short Story by Helena Gagnier The light wasn’t so bright, at first. But the longer I look the brighter it gets, until it’s all I can see. It engulfs me, swallowing me whole in an enormous gulp; I am Jonah, stuck in the stomach of an anglerfish that glows from within. When people talk about the light at the end of the tunnel, it’s usually described as enthralling. You are irresistibly drawn to it, like a minnow to a shiny bait. I’m pretty sure I’m dying, or will be soon, but this light is anything but compelling. It’s terrifying. I want to run, but I’m stuck. I can’t wriggle free. Maybe, for dirtbag humans, the light is a final interrogation room. I wasn’t so horrible, though. I only ever killed on a contractual basis and never of my own volition. That’s better, isn’t it? I’m not really to blame for the lives I took, just as a gun doesn’t bear the guilt of its owner. “Any last words?” The voice makes me blink, loosening the lights hypnotic grip. The red glow left on my eyelids reveals just how long I’ve been staring at that bright overhead fluorescent bulb. It’s time, I guess. I didn’t think I’d be so cold. “We’re all gullible fucking fishes, aren’t we?” I ask, still thinking about that light.

Blown Glass Heaven: a list Snowflakes on eyelashes; a snowball, perfectly round, falls from my hand to yours. Enough space, just: a promise suggested on the first of December. Heaven: a list I’m smiling even before my phone lights up in the darkness: “I feel like we could enjoy watching dirt… it’s just better with u.” Heaven: a list You, your laugh; the way your eyes are crinkling up as you try to catch your breath. You, your being; I didn’t think that I could like someone the way I like you. The moment before reality has settled Heaven: a list Sometimes it’s me, and sometimes it’s not me. Most of the time, it’s both of these things.

Bellyache Oubliez-moi Here I am ready to go to war for you stomping on fields of forget-me-nots I ask you now, not to forget me - last night your skin kissed mine and although I am the one with soft hands it is your touch I crave I must learn to fix the cracks that you have started to leave but sometimes your words can fix the bullet wounds don’t look at me like your look is carving me in to your memory like your eyes are telling me I’m different like I am what you’ve been waiting for don’t look at me like that If you can forget me so easily like this here I am waiting for you to say you want me but I can only stay parched for so long and my pride can only be stalled for so long and my friends can only watch me hurt for so long so while your eyes make me feel like I am a feather in the wind an orchid in a field of weeds I will remember that you water all the other flowers just the same that you have a garden to pick from I must remember that I am not an easy flower to find, I dance in your storms and while your thunder often drowns my petals leaves me gasping for air I dig my roots stronger in the soil of my being and I grow stronger, everlasting, more beautiful than the last and when you are old and grey you will see me for what I am too good for you while this is hurting me today, a pain in my belly, perhaps the best thing you can do for me is forget me. Swim Deep These honey eyes crave creamy london fog skies do not kiss them shut my eyelids are not a home for your lonely such a blue sadness you trace the clouds, see nothing never danced on crescent moons that your shackled heart cries leaves scars then paints them in gold pulled my ankles to stay afloat but I am not the love you coast on your lust smells of cheap leather, whiskey and I am suffocating drowning in the bitters of this old-fashioned you filled the hollows of my eyes with dust raced salt water droplets down the contours ofmy face watch me float away in its currents carve a raft from gold linen and paddle tired of chasing your empty watch me as I turn this tired into beautiful a foreign tongue you will never understand a mind with waters too deep it’s dark at the bottom of the sea, don’t wait for this treasure at the shore a dandelion puff in your forest fires while you bathe in a nicotine sort-of love turn your head to the flickering sun and watch my resilient drift far, far away for your barren, empty wasteland this body is done settling for dust when it deserves the sun Nika Elmi
