Traveling Abroad: What You Can do to Remain as Safe as Possible By: Alexis Pluscauski
Many different horror storries have been told about students traveling abroad, and how dangerous it can be. Whether it is a case like Amanda Knox, being acused of a horrific crime and imprisoned in a foreign country, or students being robbed or beaten, these crimes happen to American students that venture to foreign countries every single year. So what can be done to avoid getting into these types of situations? What can one do to be as safe as possible when they leave the United States? It is important to prepare yourself before leaving the country to prevent any harm while you are away. Whenever there is a chance of dangerous activity in a country, the State Department will issue travel warnings. It is important to look out for these travel warnings and to be cautious when traveling into a country that a warning has been posted for. These warnings could be posted due to dangerous situations within the country and even terrorist threats. You should avoid traveling to a country during these times of warning. Making sure you have the contact information for the U.S. Embassy and other emergency contact information for the country in case you would encounter a problem is also essential. Another safety tip for traveling abroad, is to make sure you have enough of that country’s currency. It is important to carry your money in different areas, in case something was to be stolen. Keep some separate from your wallet in case it would be misplaced or taken. Lastly, it is important to check in with parents or relatives.
Let someone know what your plans are for the day and what different areas of the country you plan on going to. Checking in every once and a while helps not only your safety, but also reassures others that everything is going smoothly. Do your research while you are away. Looking into the crime rates of towns you plan on visiting and how safe the area is is very important. While following these guidlines cannot guarantee
your safety in a foreign country, knowing these tips could have caused countless Americans to be more safe, and to have more enjoyable trips. These tips are important to keep in mind whenever you are away.

“Crime On College Campuses Monique Wyche
Crime on college campuses can
be so devestating. It has to be the most terrifying thing for a parent to have to hear that something has happen to their child due to the act of violence. The rate of violent crimes on campuses in America is definitely increasing. Some people say that College Crime is due to drugs, stress, unadressed mental illness, or a combination of all three. It is known fact that college campuses has become a regular setting for news stories about horrible crime.
It was a more recent up to date story about a mother who strangled her own child. On February 22, 2011 Stacey Pagli strangled to death her daughter Marrisa an 18 year old student at Manhattan Ville college in her on campus apartment. She then slit her left wrist and tried to hang her on the doorknob. Pagli stated that the reason for why she killed her daughter was because the daughter was disrespectful all the time. She stated that this would be her daughter’s last time speaking to her like that.

Did Someone Say Rape? How Ivy League Schools are Turning a Blind Eye to Sexual Assualt By Lauren Millahn
My assailant will remain unpunished, and life on this campus will continue its course as if nothing had happened. Today, Harvard, I am writing to let you know that you have won.

his open letter to the Harvard Crimson is not unheard of. It tells the story of a young Harvard student’s sexual assault in 2013, where she confided in a friend while intoxicated, and he took advantage of her. To this very day, the school has not assisted her in any way. In fact, she had to take matters into her own hands and move out of her “House” so she would not be living in the same building as her assailant. Why didn’t Harvard help this brave young woman? The official school policy, which has been in place for over 20 years now, states “Indecent assault and battery involves any unwanted touching or fondling of a sexual nature that is accompanied by physical force or threat of bodily injury.” It does not provide definition of consent beyond the brief mention, in its definition of rape, that a victim cannot consent if he or she is unable to express unwillingness due to alcohol or drugs, among other factors. To put it in perspective, this policy is even less inclusive than the guidelines of the U.S. Justice Department.
League institutions placed in the top 10 for most “Forcible Sex Offenses” for 2012. Princeton University and Brown University take the top two spots with Dartmouth College in 4th and Yale University in 7th place. Strangely enough, Ivies are almost nonexistent in every other list of offenses. This may be due to their questionable methods of reporting incidents, such as what happened to Yale University in 2013, when it was fined $165,000 for “very serious and numerous” violations of the Credit: Rehabs.com Clery Act by the U.S. Department of Education. The violations were related to sex offenses that Yale failed to report, plus not appropriately defining crime statistic areas.
“I feel like Penn wants me to say I’m OK, I’ve moved past it,” Lundquist told The Daily Pennsylvanian. “But I’m not going to tell them that things are fine. I’d rather keep throwing it in their face: I’m uncomfortable. Being here is really hard because of the way the whole system seems to have failed me, even though I did the whole process correctly.” For women like Lundquist and the anonymous Harvard student, safety and justice are not easy to find at elite schools. These universities fail the students who need them most. With these prestigious institutions enhancing the rape culture by not taking action, sexual assault will remain a consequential issue for the schools and students alike.

Even in situations where resources are available, prestigious institutions still chose not to be linked to these incidents. Obamacare has been a controversial topic of discussion ever since its rollout back in October of 2013. With the rollout not going as the administration planned, the whole package has been a disaster. In midApril 2014, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebilius, who was in charge of the rollout, resigned. According to the United Press, Sebelius, who presided over the tumultuous launch of the online health care exchange, admitted that the rollout “was terribly flawed and difficult.” Fast forward to April 2014: the administration announces that allegedly, 8 million people have signed up for Obamacare. Americans get the “enrollee numbers”, but where are the details on the cost and how we will pay for it? Everyone remembers the President’s famous words, “If you like your plan, you can keep your plan. Period.” As of November 2013 via Fox News Insider, over 4.2 million people lost their insurance plans because of the President’s bogus claim. Well Mr. President, how many of those 8 million are people who regained their insurance from that claim? Out of that 8 million, how many have paid their
first month’s premium? Who will pay for all this? It just doesn’t add up. According to a Gallup poll, in the fourth quarter of 2013, 17.1 percent of Americans were without insurance. So far in 2014, that number has only dropped to 15.9%. Obamacare has not had the impact that the administration and the American people have expected, with only a 1.2% increase in the number of Americans gaining insurance. Indeed this law affects older Americans and families who may have lost their insurance, but with all that it relies on young Americans and college students. Premiums go up for working people because they have to cover the people on welfare who don’t have jobs. According to Forbes, the administration reported that 32% of signees were under the age of 34. Of that 32 percent are teenagers who are on family policies and also college students who are looking to purchase their first health insurance policy. Earlier statistics showed that only 20% of the people who were enrolled were ages 18-34. That’s a little bit off from what the administration announced. So, what role do young adults and
specifically college students play under Obamacare? In a nutshell the young Americans are asked to help pay for the high healthcare costs of the older generations. Hence, the younger people pay higher premiums. According to an article from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services, Obamacare makes prescription drug coverage cheaper for senior citizens. And that’s where the young Americans come in. Young Americans are the reason that prescription drug coverage is cheaper for seniors, because the young Americans pay for it. Yes, the senior citizens have it cheaper, but young Americans get the burden. Young Americans and college students are the backbone of this system’s success. Considering the costs already facing college-age Americans that are pursuing an education, this law has increased the bills for an already over-burdened student.

Wireless Electricity For All Imagine, a phone that can charge in your pocket, an electric car charging while being parked, or even a stadium being lit with no more cords. In the world, everything requires electricity. The light that is turned on in the refrigerator or the cord that charges devices. Technology is growing in a world which uses electricity 24/7. But what if there was a better-more efficient way to bring power and light to the world?Power and light that doesn’t need a cord is the future, and the future is now. Dr. Hall, the idealist behind this brilliant project, has high hopes for the future of wireless electricity and sees it to be “just as common in every home as wireless Internet is.” Dr. Hall is the Chief Technology Officer at WiTricity. WiTricity is the startup company that is working to develop wireless resonance technology. Coils of wire are used to create a magnetic field, similar to the way wireless internet is created to reach acomputer or device. The magnetic field can reach through walls and spread throughout a house by using an energy source that can be placed anywhere. The energy source uses batteries to keep the magnetic field constantly running. When in the magnetic field, a device will have all the normal means of what it would be like if it were to be plugged into an outlet. Wireless electricity would be amazing for everywhere for anything. A world that is powered wireless is the future. If wireless electricity was taken to a college campus, students wouldn’t need to bring charging cords for their phones or other electronic devices. All a student will need to do is just make sure they are in the area of the magnetic field. Life would be easier with no cords, no mess, and amazing sources of electricity. Now the question is, would you want wireless electricity? The answer from most people is yes. Power and light are always needed, so why not make it a more efficient way of doing things. That’s what the world is meant to do, make things that don’t exist that will better our lives. Wireless electricity is starting now, but what will become of it? The choice is up to the people. Here is a video to show how wireless electricity works. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckKrxx772hU Written By: Stefanie Bennis Source: WiTricity and CNN Pictures: http://blog.yusri.com and http://www.inc.com
“Sweetie” Snares Sexual Predators all Over the World

n a little over two months, “Sweetie” has identified sexual predators by waiting in a chat room online and allowing men to contact her. Over 20,000 predators contacted her, asking for sexual favors through use of her webcam. Of those predators, 1,000 of them from 71 different countries offered her money to perform sexual acts.
“ “Sweetie” is a 10-year-old Filipina
This group of predators was tracked, and their names were passed to police in their respective countries, with 254 being from the U.S., 110 from the UK, and 103 from India. “Sweetie” is a 10-year-old Filipina and is an extraordinary young girl to have identified so many sexual predators on a global level. The kicker is, she is not human and she doesn’t even exist. “Sweetie” is a remarkable virtual girl that was created by the charity group Terre des Hommes in order to “police” the Internet and prevent sexual crimes from being committed online at a global level.
By doing this, victims do not have to come forward with their stories and predators feel more comfortable online, thinking that they are safe because they are talking to a young girl in the Philippines instead of lurking after a girl down the street in their own country. Hans Guyt, the project director of “Sweetie”, stated that, “We did not solicit anything unless it was offered to us.” By creating “Sweetie” and using her as a lure Pictured above is Hans Guyt with in chat rooms, Terre des Hommes is helping make images of online sex offenders the world a safer place both on and offline and has launched their global campaign “to stop webcam sex tourism.”
Study To The Beat By: Lauren Creasy

tudying in college is a hurdle all students face, especially when you haven’t figured out your own “beat.” There are so many definitions and equations continuously streaming through our minds that sometimes we don’t know how to sort them all out, but what if there were something to channel a certain subject. The something I am referring to is music. Music… an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions through rhythm, melody, harmony, and color. Music can work wonders from meditation to getting you pumped up...it is something you don’t have to think about. Benjamin Meck, a junior at Bloomsburg University expressed, “It makes studying more enjoyable.” “Especially when music doesn’t have words, it can help me get into the reading and stop me getting distracted by other things,” said Melanie Fineman, a junior at Brown University.
There are multiple studies out that prove that listening to music while studying activates both halves of your brain, improving memory retention. The key is knowing what types of music are best and worst for specific subjects. For example, listening to lyrical music while studying language may have a negative effect, because of how many words are being developed at the same time. On the other hand, there are multiple people who don’t believe it helps. Some can’t have anything but thier notes in front of them in a silent room, because noise confuses them. “Based on everything I’ve read, it really depends on the individual. Some students can study effectively with music playing, while others are distracted by any outside stimulus,” According to Elizabeth Axford, an online instructor in the University of Phoenix College of Humanities and Sciences. So this is your time to test it out...what works best for you? Everyone has a certain way that they function, and everyone has their own beat.

ith the new age of technology sweeping over our generation, it’s hard to keep up with the latest phone devices, game consoles, and music devices. It all started with the MP3 player, Dell’s “Jukebox.” Soon after came Apple’s first generation iPod, which was followed by iPod minis, iPod Color, iPhone touches, iPhones, and the iPad etc. Depending on the gigabyte, each device can only hold so much music which is one reason why people may turn to using Pandora or the new Spotify. Pandora, founded in 2000 is an internet radio that allows the user to choose their music via the search bar. After creating an account with the service, all you have to do is type in an artist, song title, genre, or composer and Pandora will create a playlist with music similar to what you searched. Not a fan of the current song you are listening to? Pandora has the option of a thumbs down button which essentially will never play the song on your account again. A thumbs up button is also another asset along with options to buy, publish or share the track/playlist through your other social media accounts (twitter and facebook). With the free Pandora account, you are allowed 6 skips within 24 hours and that includes commercials, unless you purchase a Pandora account. Spotify, based on the same idea of Pandora with a taste of iTunes allows unlimited skips using playlists the user creates. Spotify, founded in 2006 started really launching these past few years, making it a competitor to Pandora when it comes to straming music through the internet. Spotify’s layout is similar to iTunes and can also be synced up with your iTunes library. Spotify makes searching for music simple and easy. The search bar allows users to stream their favorite tracks and albums from the latest artists. The service also recently just came out with Spotify radio which formulates playlists based off what you’ve already been streaming through your playlists. Both Pandora and Spotify can be accesesed using your desktop or through downloading thee app, so the question is which music streaming service students prefer? While surveying a group of Bloomsburg University students, I received a few opinions. Pandora
Spotify “Spotify is too complicated” ““IBeing like toable findtonew songs insteadis of songs I already make a playlist better than radio.” know” “Access to new albums and artists without having to spend the money, and its not illegal!” “ i like not having to worry about how many skips I have left.”
Pandora “ I like to find new songs instead of songs I already know.” “ I like not having to search for music on my own.” “Pandora is not complicated to use and this is the station most familiar.”
Fight off the By Ann Nguyen
Freshman 15!
The “freshman 15” is a legend in college his-
tory. This term refers to the weight gain that college freshmen tend to gain during their first year at college. Clearly, the tendency to gain weight during your time away from home is significant enough to earn this lasting title. The pounds tend to pack on during the first year of college for a lot of reasons from late-night eating fests, all-you-can eat dining halls, lack of exercise, and alcohol use and/or abuse. . You may be living through it, or even trying to avoid it. But fear not, because this sweeping occurrence can be avoided, stopped, and controlled at any time during your four years at college by following these life proof tips. The first piece of advice is to eat healthy. College students are notoriously eating junk food and campus dining halls encourage these their students with an all-you-can-eat mentality. You are offered with many temptations and can end up piling up on portions of French fries and ice cream. It’s okay to indulge, but in moderation. Treat yourself to one dessert every few days. Avoid late-night snacking, and the peer pressure from friends. Just because everyone else from your Intro to Mass Communications study group heads to the local pizza joint after class doesn’t mean you have to join in the feeding frenzy.
Do your best to make time for exercise. Not only is exercising good for your body, but it’s also good for your brain. Need a study break? Go for a run! If you’re not a fan of the gym, join an intramural or club sport. This kind of physical fitness is less serious than joining an actual team and you can participate and play with friends. We all want to have fun on the weekends, but be careful what you’re putting into your body and how many calories it has. Avoid mixing your drinks with soda or juice because of all that added sugars. Liquid calories add up quickly so beware of the beer, it is everywhere! Beer will have you putting on weight faster than anything. There’s a reason the gut people gain from binge drinking is called a “beer belly”. College is a critical time for people to create good eating habits that’ll follow them for the rest of their lives. Coming to college and being away from the guidance of parents is a big change for young adults, but it’s their time to learn how to incorporate healthy eating and exercise into a demanding schedule. Follow these steps for a better living for the rest of your life!

MAYO MASK Packed full of oils and proteins and mayo is just what dry, dull, and unruly hair is asking for. Seventeen Magazine suggests taking a cup of mayo and letting it sit in your hair for about 15 minutes before shampooing. I chose to keep it in for 45 minutes. I tied a plastic bag around my head, watched my favorite show, and absolutely loved my softer and shinier hair. After you shampoo there is no more mayo smell, and you’ll love your new locks.
EGG WHITE MASK
If you aren’t suffering from dry hair you may be dealing with oily, greasy, or full of dandruff hairdos. If you are experiencing a type of five o clock shadow with your greasy hair then this ingredient is for you. All you have to do for oily hair is coat your hair in egg whites. Women’s Day magazine suggests using a half a cup of the egg mixture and leaving it in for 20 minutes. The important thing to remember with this mask is that when you rinse it out, use COLD water to avoid making an omelet out of your hair.

VINEGAR If you aren’t experiencing neither dry nor oily hair, but still want to add some length and thickness, vinegar is key. Apple cider vinegar is actually proven to help with hair loss and stimulate growth. You simply have to mix it with equal parts water and rinse it through your hair. Leaving it sit for about 15 minutes or more and you can leave your scalp incredibly cleansed. This actually works wonders if you can also fight the smell. Photo Credit: eBay

These include the amount and proof of the alcohol; the mixers; and the size of the drink. You don’t want to pull out your calorie calculator next time you arrive at the bar, we get it. Typically, a glass of wine contains less calories then a beer and a beer contains less calories then a mixed drink. Satisfy the Craving, without the Guilt Written by: Kirsten Jandrasitz
Whether it is craving pastries at the Commons or the bagel sandwiches at Bloomin’ Bagels, we can all admit to having those traditional, and yet unhealthy Bloomsburg student cravings. Majority of the foods that are of easy access to us students are high in cholesterol, sugars, fat and sodium. A surprising fact that students are not aware of is that there are healthy alternatives to a lot of these unhealthy cravings, and all are just as delicious in the morning! Breakfast is the first meal and fuel of the day for your body, so it is important to feed your body the healthy foods that it needs in order to take on the day! It is easy for some of our favorite breakfast foods that may not be as healthy to delicious, nutritional and energizing meals.
Egg whites vs. Egg Yolk: Studies show that egg yolk contains a much greater amount of cholesterol and fat. If eggs are a favorite breakfast meal of yours, try switching to egg whites. As I stated before, anything in moderation will not damage your health, and that is the same as yolk. Having some yolk in your diet is healthy, but too much intake is not. That is why egg whites are a healthy alternative. - Serve with whole-wheat wrap or whole-wheat bagel thin rather than white toast. - If you use butter on bagel thin, use healthier alternatives such as: Brummel & Brown, which is made with nonfat yogurt. - Healthy additions: tomatoes, feta cheese, spinach, avocado, salsa www.fitsugar.com
Greek yogurt vs. Regular yogurt: Greek yogurt offers more protein for the body as well as a lower intake of unhealthy fats. There are many different brands of Greek Yogurt that all offer a variety of flavors. Some of the Greek yogurt brands include: Chobani, Oikos, Fage, Yoplait, Dannon Light & Fit - For some added flavor and protein, add granola and fruit - Honey and Cinnamon are great flavors to add if you like to change around the flavors at times.
Fresh fruit smoothie vs. Pre-made smoothies: Most smoothies that are already packaged and ready in the grocery store are high in sugar and fat calories. If fruit smoothies are a favorite of yours in the morning, try alternating your ingredients to make an enjoyable and healthy smoothie. - Add fresh fruit, almond milk or low-fat milk, low-fat yogurt or Greek yogurt - Other additions that you might be unaware of: flaxseed, almond butter, cinnamon, ginger - Add protein! The morning is the best time to have protein to start your day. www.tasteofhome.com
Banana Muffins: Do you have a sweet tooth in the morning? There are many alternative ways to bake in order to satisfy your craving without having to sacrifice the taste. When baking, replace oil with applesauce. You can also replace butter with avocado. These small changes will drastically reduce your calorie intake. A guilt-free sweet is always a favorite! www.preparedpantry.com
Water vs. Soda/Juice/Energy Drinks: Early in the morning, it is common for students or other people in the workforce to have the desire to grab an energy drink or soda which are packed with unhealthy amounts of sugar and a lot of times cause the body to crash hours later. Don’t drink your calories! Make sure you are drinking water throughout the entire day and before every meal; doing so will allow for you to feel fuller, therefore eating less. - Crystal light is a great low calorie mix that you can add to your water if you need some flavoring. - Need Energy? Drinking coffee black is healthy and provides energy. If you have a bit of a sweet tooth, add natural sugars such as Splenda, wish a small amount of fat free Coffee Mate creamer. Hot tea is a healthy and energizing alternative as well.

or the second year in a row Luke Bryan and Blake Shelton hosted the 2014 ACM awards. Part of the entertainment of watching awards shows is when there are good hosts to listen to. Producers do their best to deliver the best of the best. Bryan and Shelton rocked the house with their music and comedy all night long. The two made jokes about same-sex marriage, Miley Cyrus, and even Britney Spears. While it was non-stop jokes between the two, an actual award was not handed out until the second hour of the show. This could have had the audience a little impatient, but the music probably made up for that. The first hour consisted of many performances by The Band Perry, Florida Georgia Line, Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, and many others. Blake Shelton and Shakira even debuted a new song “Medicine”, which was a crowd favorite. Some performances brought the party out in the crowd; others brought tears to their eyes. Both fun and heartfelt, no performance disappointed. As for the awards, the biggest surprise of the night was George Strait winning entertainer of the year, which was fan voted. The top winners of the night however, were Miranda Lambert and Keith Urban, both taking home three awards. Another special moment was Justin Moore receiving new artist of the year and getting slightly choked up while accepting. Miranda Lambert also took home her humbling fifth straight female vocalist of the year award. In comparison to the CMA’s, the ACM’s is the smaller award show; however, with how well the night went it could have out done the bigger awards. It’s important for the awards to be memorable, it helps the artists promote new songs and have fans show their support by voting. All in all the night was a huge success and left everyone on social media talking about it for days. By:Alex Steel

ivergent is an action-adventure film that takes place in post-apocalyptic Chicago. The population is divided into five factions based on personality. The factions include Abnegation who are selfless, Dauntless who are brave, Amity who are peaceful, Candor who are honest, and Erudite who are intelligent. Beatrice Prior, played by actress Shailene Woodley, is classified as Divergent. This means she has the aptitude to classify for more than one faction. When Beatrice discovers a conspiracy to eradicate all divergent people, she teams up with her initiation trainer, Four, played by Theo James. Together they try to uncover the mysterious conspiracy. Divergent is rated PG-13 and was released in theaters on March 21, 2014. Although there frequently is controversy in adapting novels into movies, the film appears to be well received by its viewers. The Huffington Post writes, “The cinematography of the movie is beautiful,” in its movie review. Although
the movie franchise is being compared to The Hunger Games, it stands apart with its plot, character development, intriguing romance, and stunning computer-generated graphics. The Divergent film is based on a trilogy of science-fiction novels written by Veronica Roth. The novels include, Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant. The novels explore the emotional struggle of its characters to define themselves while living in a society that classifies people into a particular faction for life. While tackling the journey of discovering her identity, the leading female character, Beatrice, also faces struggles with family, romance, and conspiracy. Beatrice must decide whether she will stay in the faction of her family, or choose a different faction in hopes of discovering herself and pursuing a possible romance with leading male character, Four. All of this is being decided in the midst of her attempt to uncover a conspiracy to eliminate all divergent people and save her own life. The entire series of books are available for purchase at book retailers. The Divergent film is currently in theaters and will be available on DVD in July 2014. The second novel in the series, Insurgent, will be in theaters within the year 2015, and Allegiant will follow thereafter.

The Innevitable Doom of F.R.S. Cara Mercadante No matter what part of the world, there’s one thing that college students have in common, F.R.S. FRS stands for First Relationship Syndrome, and is very simple to detect. When it comes to college relationships, it is easy to determine who has experience with relationships, and who doesn’t. FRS can range from minor and innocent, and most importantly not affect the relationship, or it can be the opposite, wild, dramatic, and chaotic, tearing your relationship apart. It is a syndrome that occurs more drastically in girls, yet tends to get pretty serious with some boys as well. If you’re a girl looking to understand the way a boys mind works, than this isn’t the article for you. Although I’d like to give some similarities between boys and their symptoms, I have to face the fact that boys are very different, even can be called aliens to girls, and we will never truly understand the way they think or act. From my own experience, I’ve realized that there are many stages of F.R.S. among girls in college, but they all have one thing in common; that their boyfriend is their only direct source to happiness and fulfillment. This can either be harmless or detrimental; it depends on the girl you’re dealing with. According to blogger Nitika Chopra on Bella Life, she realized she was suffering from the crazy side of FSR when she found herself “asking the who, what, when, where, why” of her boyfriend, multiple times a day.
In the harmless situations, girls most commonly focus on doing what’s best for him, and making themselves irresistible, yet impossible, at all times. Some common things that I myself am guilty of, and have seen from other college girls,
are never letting him see you without makeup, not only making yourself watch sports you have no interest in but pretending to be over enthused about it, transitioning from living off cereal to becoming Rachel Ray in the kitchen just so he’ll think you’ll be a good wife one day, eating half or less of the normal portion of food you eat when he’s not there, and insisting on sleep overs during the week.
In the more extreme cases, I have experienced many dramatic events. I’m proud to say I haven’t suffered from these symptoms personally, but many of my friends have. These consist of doing things like getting angry when he doesn’t want to talk to you on the phone until you go to sleep, crying hysterically every time you go out with him because you cant bear to see him talk to other girls, begging him to show his love for you through social media, and/or guys depending on the girl, and the worst, trying to change his wardrobe. So a little word of advice to girls out there, unfortunately FRS is unavoidable, but the symptoms can be drastically reduced if you stay true to one thing: yourself. Make your relationship what you want it to be, and don’t over obsess about it. I know it’s hard, but no one likes a bragger, especially your single friends. It’s okay to do things to make your man happy, but what’s most important is making yourself happy. Don’t let your emotions get the best of you, and most importantly, never be afraid to go for that second slice of pizza. No man or woman is satisfied with just one, if they are, they’re lying.

here is one class that encompasses the true meaning of confusion and dismay. It’s a place where everything looks foreign and as much as you learn it, it will never make sense. Math. Starting out at a young age we are introduced to math. Even in our young minds we desperately try to grasp the meaning of numbers. As if it isn’t confusing enough teachers start to incorporate letters into math. As if we weren’t able to do the numbers why not add the alphabet. It feels like a constant battle of trying to put together a bunch of nonsense and find a logical answer. When you finally graduate high school you think that you won’t have to worry about math anymore. Then you are proven wrong. Math creeps its way back into your life in college. Even when your major has nothing related to math within it, your general education requires some form of math class. These are even worse than the ones from high school. You have to take things like probability and statistics. “So I have 6 marbles and 2 are blue and 4 are red. I take out 3 what is the probability that all three are red?” What’s the probability that this kind of question would be helpful at all in my everyday life? It’s not. Math has been years of confusion followed by constant questions. Even when you think you finally grasped the concept it slips through your fingers again leaving you clueless. In college there are some things that we do find math necessary for. These are things we actually find that math is used for. In college this would be “The amount of times you can re-wear a shirt is always once less than you think, but indefinitely fewer times than you can re-wear a pair of jeans.”(collegehumor) We also have our own set of equations that actually make sense to college students. These equations for example could be twitter + YouTube=vine. These are things in our everyday life that we see and use all the time. Another problem that we would use math for is “A dorm floor holds about 20 students. 11 of these students are boys and 9 of these students are girls. 50% of the girls have boyfriends from high school and 3 of the boys are likely to be starters on the football team. What is the probability that Jimmy will actually get laid this year?”(collegehumor) So unless you choose a career that involves math, the only math that you will encounter is when you’re splitting a restaurant bill. Usually this is when one person doesn’t want to split it evenly. In this case stop hanging out with that cheap jerk and you will have absolutely no math to do. Which is good because you’ll forget all the math you ever knew within the first six hours after graduation.

ell, Major League Baseball is officially back. The season is a mere one month old, and there have already been some major impacts from stars both young and old. As we all know, at the end of this season we will bid farewell to “The Captain”, New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter. He announced his retirement this offseason. The Yankees want to make sure that Jeter goes out with a bang. Staying in the American League East, reigning homerun champ Chris Davis of the Orioles connected on his second long ball of this 2014 season on April 23. He’s going to have to put together yet another incredible season to come close to the 53 homers he hit last season. Looking at the National League, there have been some great performances already through these first few weeks. Miami Marlins phenom Jose Fernandez is off to a stellar start, owning a 4-1 record with a 1.74 ERA and 65 strikeouts in seven starts. Also, White Sox rookie first baseman Jose Abreu is leading all of baseball with 12 homeruns and second on the RBI list with 35. Heading out to Hollywood, the Los Angeles Dodgers look to repeat as NL West champions. Ace Clayton Kershaw is fresh off a new 7-year, $215 million dollar contract and looks to anchor the Dodgers to another date in the post-season.
Now, it’s time for my predictions for the 2014 playoffs. I expect the defending World Series Champion Red Sox to own the AL East crown come September. The Detroit Tigers have the loaded lineup to win the Central, with the bats of Miguel Cabrera and Ian Kinsler. Out of the West, it will be the Los Angeles Angels. The two AL Wild Card teams will be the Baltimore Orioles and the Cleveland Indians. Now for my National League playoff predictions. The Atlanta Braves will repeat as NL East champions, behind a solid rotation and lights out closer Craig Kimbrell. The 2013 National League champions, the St. Louis Cardinals will take the Central Division, behind another solid rotation and flamethrower closer Trevor Rosenthal. Yet another solid pitching staff will lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to the National League West crown. The two National League Wild Card teams will be the Washington Nationals and the Milwaukee Brewers. These are only my predictions; I hope I’m right! It’s a long season!
Yankees captain and shortstop Derek Jeter will be playing his final season in 2014.
