EARLY YEARS CARE

Stress-free childcare By Georgie Jones

Using a nanny or a babysitter can be a stressful experience for any parent, but we hope these few handy tips will make the experience better for everyone… 3 When you go out for the first time without your child, arrange for your child’s carer to come and meet them (if they are old enough) an hour before you are due to go out. That way you can show them around, advise them on what you would like them to do and watch them interact with your child for a period of time. This will help both the child and the parent feel more comfortable before you leave them for the day or evening. 3 Always ask your child carer about their previous experience, check references and check they have a DBS (police check). The advantage

of using an agency means they will have done the vetting for you already. 3 Leave detailed instructions, both verbal and written, outlining your child’s routine and any requirements you have for them. 3 If your child is quite young, leave a pashmina or an item of clothing which has your scent on it. If your child is not happy, they can then smell this which will help to calm them down. 3 In addition to ensuring you provide all your contact details, make sure the child’s carer has details for your next of kin and neighbour in case of emergencies. 3 On the first day or evening, ask your child’s carer to text you a few times throughout the day or evening to help you feel at ease.

EARLY YEARS CARE

Learn outside whether sunshine or showers, at Happy Friends Nursery

At Happy Friends Nursery, a private oasis tucked away at the end of Whitton High Street, children enjoy an indoor/outdoor free-flow environment whatever the season. The nursery is very proud of its outdoor learning space where child-led and adult-led activities are always evident. The nursery utilises whatever the weather has to offer, so whether the children are making kites or wind socks to monitor the wind direction, donning a pair of wellies to jump in puddles, raking up soggy leaves or squelching across muddy areas to make footprints, there is always lots of fun to be had. The nursery feels that the children become more engaged when it involves real-life resources and having opportunities for first-hand experiences in the environment around them. Happy Friends Nursery believes that the outdoor environment really is a classroom without walls, offering the children the chance to do things differently from what they would do indoors. When the children play in the mud kitchen they are given the opportunity to understand mathematical language, while exploring the water runs supports their discovery of scientific theories. The children love the den-building activities which enables them to work through complex thought processes and use their ability to build upon existing ideas, while messy play is a fantastic

outlet to express creativity and supports the development of their sensory skills. All of the learning and development at Happy Friends Nursery takes place while the children engage with each other and the environment around them, a fact that three-year-old pupil Lachlan describes as ‘awesome!’

Happy Friends Nursery offers sessional pre-school care for children 2.5 to 5 years from 9.15am to 1.15pm daily. For further information, visit www.happyfriendsnursery.co.uk

FAMILY HEALTH and WELLBEING

Does my child have a cold or flu?

Influenza is an illness capable of affecting the entire respiratory tract from the nose and throat down to the bronchial tubes and lungs.

by Dr Robert Arlt

A typical case of flu in older children and teenagers consists of a sudden onset of chills and fever, headache, body aches, sore throat and a dry hacking cough. Pre-school children tend to have an illness more like a severe cold, with high fever, runny nose and cough, typically accompanied by irritability and poor appetite. Some infants develop a hoarse cry and a ‘barking’ cough (croup); diarrhoea and vomiting may also occur. Flu usually takes away a child’s appetite, so don’t expect them to eat much for the first few days. Encourage them to drink more fluids, especially when fever is present, but forcing fluids is unnecessary. Active play can make a cough worse.

EDUCATION

THE ULTIMATE HOMEWORK GUIDE By Liat Hughes Joshi

Helping your little one with their homework needn’t be difficult if you follow these simple tips. Like it or not, homework is a necessary part of school life. However, it does bring benefits: helping you see what your children have been doing in class, understanding their strengths and weaknesses and reinforcing learning. So how can you make homework run as smoothly as possible and avoid it becoming a chore for the whole family?

Incorporate homework into a routine

Many children benefit from having a set homework time – they’re somewhat less likely to push back if it is just what happens at 5pm. However you might both prefer homework to be completed at the earliest opportunity so they can go off and relax, or favour a spell of winding down after school – simply see what works for your child. If, like many

extra

primary schoolers, they only get one or two pieces of homework a week, it might be best to tackle it at the weekend when they’re not tired from school.

Help, yes, but don’t do it for them!

As a parent your key role is to ensure that your child has somewhere comfortable and quiet to do their homework and the items required, e.g. a dictionary or ruler. You may also need to clarify what a question means or provide support if they’re stuck. But do remember it’s their homework not yours – if you’re having to do it all for them on a regular basis, it may be too difficult for your little one – discuss this with their teacher.

How much is too much?

Most primary age children will get half an hour to an hour of homework a week plus reading and perhaps spellings and times

Liat Hughes Joshi is a parenting journalist and the author of four books including ‘New Old-fashioned Parenting’ and ‘How to Unplug Your Child’ (both published by Summersdale) and ‘Raising Children: The Primary Years’ (Pearson).

Sandra Nicol one of the organisers said ‘we get a lot of calls from parents who know very little about the requirements of the 11+ exams, hence our decision to provide a “free” seminar. “Free” in the sense that the seminar content will be provided entirely free of charge, however a small contribution of £6 towards the cost of the venue will be levied.’ Bookings can be made online and places are limited. The seminar is only open to parents with children in year 4 or 5 and will be for a duration of no more than 90 minutes. tables. If you think your child is being set too much homework, again, it’s definitely worth having a chat with their teacher. Additionally, if it’s taking what you feel is an inappropriate

amount of time on a particular day, don’t be afraid to stop and write him or her a note along the lines of ‘X spent an hour doing this homework and we felt it was enough’.

Popular activities include launching the hydrogen rocket, damming the stream, building a giant house and taking a picture of your shadow. In January, Splash, Bubbles and Balloons, an explosive show involving a Bubbleator and setting fire to balloons, will arrive! So whatever the weather, this fun, family attraction is sure to keep everyone entertained.

The Gruffalo celebrates his 15th anniversary at Lyric Theatre

There’s still time to catch everyone’s favourite furry monster as the Gruffalo continues to celebrate his 15th anniversary at the Lyric Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue. Toby Mitchell from Tall Stories.‘The original 2001 tour involved three actors in a car (not even a stage manager!) touring to schools and small venues. To go from there to the West End, Broadway and the Sydney Opera House has been quite a journey.’ Audiences of all ages will delight in this wonderful production, with its catchy score of original music and lyrics, as they join Mouse on this daring adventure through the deep, dark wood. After all, there’s no such thing as a Gruffalo – is there? Tickets start at £14.50, with a family ticket for four costing £65.

Tall Stories’ hugely popular production of The Gruffalo first opened on 12 May 2001, just 18 months after the book was first published, and can be seen on the West End until 8 January 2017. Based on the much-loved picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, Tall Stories’ adaptation combines songs, laughter and storytelling theatre with just the right amount of scary fun! ‘Back in 1999, when we asked Julia and Axel if we could adapt their then little-known book The Gruffalo for the stage, we had no idea how things would turn out,’ said Olivia Jacobs and

CLUBS, CLASSES & ACTIVITIES

Get co-ordinated with Kiddikicks Football! Co-ordination does not come naturally to some children and in these cases, children need support to develop these skills. There are two different types of coordination that children need to learn: hand-eye co-ordination and physical co-ordination. Hand-eye co-ordination, also known as fine motor skills, is important in life as children use these skills when tying their shoes and in handwriting. Physical co-ordination is also referred to as gross motor skills and being able to improve physical co-ordination is going to enhance a child’s ability to run, jump, kick and catch a ball and their football skills! Kiddikicks prides itself on developing a curriculum which enhances both fine and gross motor skills and spatial awareness. It aims to develop children’s confidence through a range of exciting drills and fun, educational games. It is not difficult to improve a child’s co-ordination but it

does require consistency and, from a child’s perspective, it needs to be a lot of FUN! Each Kiddikicks session is planned to incorporate a variety of football skills-based drills using a range of different equipment. The classes use a variety of sensory toys to develop hand-eye co-ordination, where children are encouraged to use different parts of their body to manoeuvre the different objects which help them to develop their skills. The children play games using cones, hoops and obstacle courses which allows them to develop their physical co-ordination. All of the sessions have a football focus and end with goal scoring or match play to allow the children to use the skills they have been practising throughout the session. Kiddikicks runs classes for children aged between 18 months and 7 years and FREE trials are available for new players. Classes take place in Kingston, East Molesey, Weybridge, Pyrford, Byfleet and for more

West End star hosts free workshop for Little Voices’ new centre in Teddington

Little Voices in Teddington is celebrating its launch with the help of West End star Sarah Harlington who will be staging a FREE singing and drama-inspired workshop for local youngsters. Sarah, best known for her roles as Serena Katz in Fame (UK Tour), Avenue Q and Hairspray Musical Tours, has a wealth of experience, having trained at Arts Ed Theatre School. The free event will take place on Thursday 10 November (from 4pm to 5pm for 4 to 7 year olds and from 5pm to 6pm for 8 to 12 year olds) at Teddington Baptist Church. Budding performers, aged 4 to 12 years, who have a passion for musical theatre will be able to

experience the unique benefits of Little Voice training while working with Sarah. ‘Participants can expect to take part in an exciting repertoire of activities during the workshops, from doing character work, singing songs and performance techniques,’ explains Ashlea Pearson, Principle of Little Voices. Little Voices uses singing and drama to develop confidence and self-esteem in young people by teaching them in engaging after-school lessons

in groups of no more than six children. While developing their skills, they will work towards the highly respected and accredited musical theatre, drama, acting and communication examinations from The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMDA). Following the success of Little Voices in neighbouring Putney and East Sheen, Ashlea is ‘excited to begin teaching the children of Teddington’. Classes will be held on Thursdays from 4.00pm

at Teddington Baptist Church from Thursday 17 November. Little Voices will be offering the chance for pupils to attend a FREE trial lesson in addition to the FREE workshop to allow pupils to experience the lessons first hand. For further information, visit www.littlevoices.org.uk

WHAT’S ON & where Traditions old and new with the National Trust Christmas is a time for traditions, from those passed down through families to new discoveries with friends that become part of your festive celebrations. Over the festive season, National Trust properties in Surrey will be decked out with Christmas sparkle. There are decorated houses, exhibitions, visits from Father Christmas, atmospheric estates and wintery countryside all bringing festive fun and Christmas to life through the ages. So why not make your Christmas that extra bit special in these winter wonderland locations? To get you in the festive mood, Morden Hall Park near Wimbledon hosts Postcards from Christmas. From 26 November until 5 January, visitors are invited to find giant postcards and discover

how different people celebrate Christmas around the world. You may even be inspired to make a postcard about your own Christmas celebrations. From 26 November to 22 December little ones can visit Father Christmas and his elves at Morden Hall Park. They will receive a personalised gift and can take a Christmas-themed craft home. Please book as places go quickly. For adults, there are Christmas Wreath Workshops on 1 and 9 December where you will learn how to make your own natural wreath using materials from the park and garden centre to adorn your home. Polesden Lacey is celebrating A 1930s Christmas Party from 1 to 23 December. Guests will experience the sights, sounds and aromas of a sparkling 1930s Christmas party from the 18ft Christmas tree in the hall and

giant wreath at the entrance way, to Italian Renaissance nativity paintings in the picture corridors and piano playing in the gold Saloon. Children have their own Christmas trail in the house and can write a letter to Father Christmas, while adults can take a romantic horse and carriage ride in the grounds (weekends only) and do some relaxed Christmas shopping. Christmas lunches with all the trimmings are available in the Granary café; advance booking recommended. For a really family-friendly outdoor experience at Christmas Hatchlands Park is the place to be (weekends from 3 to 18 December). Families love

meeting Father Christmas in his cosy, vintage living room, snuggling up to the farm animals when they visit (17 and 18 December) and exploring the trail around the woods. The new trail tells the touching story of resident donkeys Morris and Callum enjoying their first Christmas. Have some mince pies in the historic café, or try a donkey-shaped decorated biscuit, and stop off for some Christmas shopping. On 18 December enjoy Family Carols in the music room. It’s all in the spirit of Hatchlands’ last private owner, H.S. Goodhart-Rendel, who used to throw Christmas parties for the village children at Christmas in the 1950s.
