Honorary Degree Recipients
Neera and Rajendra Singh
Neera Singh and Rajendra Singh met at the India Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur while Neera Singh was an undergraduate student and Rajendra Singh a University of Maine graduate student. Neera Singh went on to achieve her master’s in chemical engineering at Kansas State University and Rajendra Singh a Ph.D. in wireless communications at Southern Methodist University.
The Singhs married in 1981 and united their skills in engineering and computing to lead innovation in the budding wireless communication industry. They developed the first software that could configure optimal locations for cellular towers, enabling the growth of communication networks across urban and rural areas in more than 50 countries. It was the starting point of Lunayach Communications Consultants (LCC) International, one of 33 total companies in which the Singhs invested or launched. Within 12 years, the company grew to employ more than 1,000 people and exceed $100 million in annual revenue.
Rajendra Singh and Neera Singh retired from LCC International in 2008 to focus on investing in new technologies and advancing education in engineering, computing, social science, business and marketing. The Washington Post and Forbes Magazine have recognized their excellence in business and investment power.
With the success of LCC International the Singhs created the LCC Institute — an initiative they consider their highest achievement — which democratized the industry by broadening access to telecommunication knowledge worldwide.
They continue to support generations of engineers by supplying scholarships and collaboratively offering guidance to UMaine and funding a new AI program at the University of Pennsylvania.
Rajendra Singh has served on the boards of Johns Hopkins University and its School of Medicine, as well as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and is a recipient of the Ellis Island Medal. Outstanding Teaching
Lindsay Seward
Lindsay Seward’s goal as an educator is straightforward — to cultivate dynamic, fun and inclusive learning communities that foster curiosity, inspire a passion for learning and nurture a growth mindset. An alumna of the University of Maine, Seward has remained committed to supporting her students for more than two decades as a faculty member in the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Conservation Biology. Her courses and mentorship facilitate student growth in critical thinking by encouraging them to grapple with new and divergent ideas; problem-solve through trial and error; and be willing to make mistakes. She believes these strategies inspire resilience, persistence and a positive attitude toward learning.
Seward’s colleagues commend her as the most gifted educator they have met in more than 25 years of teaching in higher education. Students seek her advice, guidance or encouragement when they are struggling — which she is always able to provide and help them feel better than when they arrived at her door. She masterfully balances holding students to high standards and teaching them to think critically, while also remaining unwavering in her support, care and inclusive approach to teaching. She forges a personal relationship and is on a first-name basis with every student in her department, nearly 200 at any given time.
Seward’s students describe her as a dedicated and passionate educator, teaching first-year to capstone courses. Many have gone on to top graduate programs and become leaders in conservation. Her students speak to her personality, approachability, humor, encyclopedic knowledge of her field and steadfast commitment as a trusted mentor. Her passion for studying the environment and teaching the next generation of wildlife and fisheries professionals was recognized in 2019 by the Maine Chapter of The Wildlife Society Award of Meritorious Service.
Seward has also been recognized by the College of Earth, Life, and Health Sciences as a recipient of the Faculty Teaching Award in 2013, and by the university as recipient of the Advisor of the Year award in 2012 and Faculty Mentor Impact award in 2023.

Public Engagement Achievement
Associate Professor of Political Science
Associate Professor of Honors
Robert Glover
Robert Glover has dedicated his career to empowering students and fellow researchers to engage in the democratic process. Through his work as associate professor of political science and honors, he has brought actionable policy insights to political leaders and mentored University of Maine students on how to become political changemakers.
Since 2016, Glover has co-led UMaine UVote, a nonpartisan student voting effort to encourage voter registration, educate young voters and bolster election turnout. He initiated the UMaine UVote Student Ambassadors program, a peer-to-peer outreach and organizing model. His team has trained students and assisted with local elections administration. This has led to marked increases in student voter turnout. Because of his efforts, more than 85% of UMaine students registered to vote and 73% voted in 2020. As a result, UMaine was recognized nationally for civic engagement by Washington Monthly and the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge.
Since 2017, he has acted as co-leader of Maine’s chapter of the Scholars Strategy Network (SSN). The organization works to improve public policy and strengthen democracy through communicating expertise embedded within scholarly communities. As part of Maine SSN, he helped place more than 330 op-eds on contemporary policy issues from Maine scholars in the Bangor Daily News and Kennebec Journal. He has also helped scholars publish in national and global media outlets.
At UMaine, Glover developed an advanced policy research seminar that engages students in co-designing and co-executing a policy research project with their peers and community partners. He has served as a faculty fellow and board member at Brandeis University’s Educational Network for Active Civic Transformation (ENACT), which empowers college educators across the country to develop engaged policy courses.
Community impact and relationships with those affected by public policy often serve as the starting point for his scholarly research. His statewide work on policy attitudes toward overdose and the opioid crisis has helped drive conversations about policy response. He has also worked closely with research collaborators and the Maine Town and City Clerks’ Association to investigate local election officials’ perceptions of Maine’s move to ranked-choice voting.

Valedictorian
Michael Delorge
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences | College of Earth, Life, and Health Sciences
Bachelor
of Arts in Political Science and a Bachelor of Science in Biology
Michael Delorge of Biddeford, Maine, is a 2024 valedictorian. Pursuing dual degrees in political science and biology, Delorge crafted coursework focused on public health policy with the goal of generating skills to improve medical care. Originally a pre-med student, he altered his studies to meet his interests and spent class time integrating topics such as plant biology with substance use policy.
Having enrolled during the COVID-19 pandemic, Delorge sought to improve his experience by finding community in a way that joined leadership and public service. For the next four years, he participated in student government and UMaine’s Partners for World Health (PWH) chapter, a nonprofit organization that distributes recycled medical supplies to global communities. His senior year he became student government president, responsible for leading a 30-person team, making administrative decisions and advocating for undergraduates with an organizational budget of $1 million and oversight of 150 student groups. Delorge became co-president of UMaine’s PWH chapter his sophomore year, serving as president for the next two. In addition to distributing medical aid to communities in Senegal and assisting in sending 22,000 pounds of medical supplies to Ukraine, he more than doubled the number of student volunteers and secured $30,000 in grant funding. Through his commitment, he found a home in UMaine and learned the gratitude of leaving a community better than when he arrived.
While he solidified connections to student groups, Delorge forged a relationship with the professor who would become his mentor and advise the research he continued for three years. His research aimed to understand and communicate the factors that make someone more likely to recover from substance use disorder — a critical public health concern nationally and in Maine — and was influential in informing a statewide response in policy.
The research started in a collaborative practicum assisting the Maine Recovery Advocacy Project that Delorge independently extended as a Margaret Chase Smith Public Affairs Scholarship recipient. He is an intern for the Maine Primary Care Association and formerly interned for U.S. Sen. Susan Collins and the Maine Medical Association. His internships have focused on researching, advocating and capitalizing on outreach to improve legislation through evidence-based public policy.
Delorge plans to spend several years working in federal health policy in Washington, D.C. before pursuing a master’s degree in public health and then returning to work in Maine.
Valedictorian
Lydia Gilmore
Maine College of Engineering and Computing
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering
Lydia Gilmore of Bangor, Maine, is a 2024 valedictorian. She is majoring in mechanical engineering and is a member of the Cross Country and Track and Field teams. On the accelerated track for a master’s degree in mechanical engineering, she is also an undergraduate research assistant at the Advanced Structures and Composites Center (ASCC).
Through small community races as a child, Gilmore discovered her talent for running and the joy she found in pushing her physical and mental limits. She went on to set university records for top 10 performances in several long-distance track events and to finish in the top 20 of the America East Conference Cross Country Championship. She won the Team Maine award for highest individual GPA; was nominated for the M Club Dean Smith award, presented annually to the top male and female student-athletes; and was named several times to the America East All-Academic team.
Coupled with her commitments as a scholar-athlete, Gilmore earned the respect of university faculty with her persistence and grit to overcome challenges and her service to the community at large. Since 2017, she has volunteered for the Maine National Guard Youth Camp, a summer program for children of retired or active members of the military. As a child with two parents who served, Gilmore understands the complexities of families with military backgrounds and teaches youths how to face challenges with resilience and confidence.
While growing up, her parents taught her to break down goals or obstacles into manageable pieces — a life lesson she used to approach setbacks caused by Lyme disease in the middle of her collegiate running career. Rebuilding her fitness to a competitive level taught her to practice patience in accepting small, daily victories with gratitude and optimism. She learned that personal success is achieved through a disciplined work ethic, honesty in perspective and tailoring one’s goals to meet reality.
Gilmore has started taking graduate courses and will conduct research in the area of textiles for her master’s thesis. As a research assistant at the ASCC, she has worked on several different projects and introduced innovative ideas to help advance research in computational modeling and optimization of large-scale additive manufacturing. She will continue her master’s degree in mechanical engineering at UMaine following graduation.
Salutatorian

College of Earth, Life, and Health Sciences | Honors College
Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry with a Second Major in Microbiology
Katelyn Amero of Mapleton, Maine, is the 2024 salutatorian. She is an Honors College student double-majoring in biochemistry and microbiology. A young girl’s curiosity to identify the animals in her backyard bloomed into Amero’s determination to find and analyze new facets of science and biology. She works steadily in the laboratory and showcases genuine interest in what research may reveal about the natural world, firmly following the philosophy that scientists learn from their mistakes and the unexpected results.
Although Amero has always been interested in biology, she discovered her passion for the field of infectious diseases while conducting research in a first-year introductory course studying antibiotic-resistant bacteria. She presented this research at three symposiums and now serves as an undergraduate teaching assistant for the course. As she entered her second year, she contributed to faculty research and was listed as a co-author on a recent publication in G3: Genes|Genomes|Genetics. She continued research with infectious bacteria by participating in an internship at Yale University the following summer, later applying what she learned to her honors thesis, titled “The Effect of Prophages on Mycobacterial Intracellular Survival in Macrophages.” Adept at applying her research and knowledge to relevant world issues, her thesis will be published in a professional journal and she has presented her work at local, state and national conferences. She is a Maine Top Scholar and recipient of the prestigious Barry Goldwater Scholarship, established by the U.S. Congress to support research careers in natural sciences, mathematics and engineering.
Through her resolve to absorb as much information, resources and perspectives as was offered to her, Amero maintained a perfect GPA. She worked to balance intellectual interests with her service to the community and mentorship to fellow undergraduates. She is an active member and leader of the medically based service club Operation H.E.A.R.T.S, and she also contributes to the Undergraduate Women in STEMM club on campus. Despite her role as president of Operation H.E.A.R.T.S., she upholds that casual conversations and day-to-day peer support are valuable ways to lead that don’t require a position of power.
Amero was accepted into the University of Pennsylvania, where she plans to pursue a doctoral degree in their Microbiology, Virology and Parasitology program within the Cell and Molecular Biology Graduate Group.

UNIVERSITY OF MAINE DEGREES
The University of Maine offers curricula in a wide variety of academic fields leading to baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral degrees. The baccalaureate or bachelor’s degree is awarded to undergraduate students who complete the required program in their respective departments. Master’s and doctoral degrees are awarded to students who complete prescribed graduate study. A Certificate of Advanced Study (C.A.S.) and Education Specialist (EdS) are available for specified graduate study beyond the master’s degree.
Undergraduate degrees with Latin honors are conferred at Commencement for the following attainments of rank: summa cum laude: 3.7 GPA; magna cum laude: 3.5 GPA; cum laude: 3.3 GPA. The university bases the GPA on the student’s work at the University of Maine, and that must amount to at
least 60 credits or 50% of the total degree credits required in the program of study, whichever is greater.
Students graduating from the Honors College are conferred baccalaureate degrees with the designation of honors, high honors or highest honors. In order to receive a degree with honors, a student must complete the honors general education curriculum, which includes the four-course civilizations sequence, as well as a tutorial and two semesters of research leading to the successful defense of the honors thesis.
Degrees are awarded at the end of the semester or session in which degree requirements have been completed, not necessarily accompanied by Commencement ceremonies.

ACADEMIC REGALIA
As early as the 12th century, the first modern universities at Bologna and Paris were the centers of European learning. The usual garb of the time for both churchmen and laymen was a long gown, necessary for warmth in the unheated buildings of the day. Scholars, generally members of church orders, wore such robes, as well as hoods to protect their shaved heads. Later, skull caps were worn on the head and the hood became a cape that could be pulled over the head in unpleasant weather. The hood was also sometimes used to collect alms from the more affluent members of the community. As more universities were founded, distinctive forms of the gown and hood were adopted by their faculties. Variations indicated various ranks within the institutions. Strict rules were published, and sometimes tailors who departed from the authorized design were punished.
The academic hat was a later development adapted from the headdress of ordinary people. Academically, it was originally worn as a symbol of the master’s degree and existed in various forms: some were round, some square, and some had a tuft in the center. The flat, square mortarboard of today originated in Oxford.
Academic costume came to America in 1754 with the founding of King’s College, now Columbia University. Styles became quite varied, as they were in Europe, but in 1895, a group of American college and university representatives met to establish a uniform system of academic apparel for this country. This led to the establishment in 1902 of an “Intercollegiate Code of Academic Costume.” The American Council on Education formed a committee in 1932 to review the code, and it was again reviewed and revised in 1960.
THE GONFALON The gonfalon is a flag or banner that hangs from a crosspiece or frame. It originated in the medieval states of Italy as an ensign of state or office. It is used in many university ceremonies to designate the various colleges or schools of the institution. The gonfalon for each college usually precedes the graduates as they enter the ceremony. Distinguished graduates or faculty may carry gonfalons for their specific colleges. At UMaine, they represent the colleges, Maine Business School, the Division of Lifelong Learning and the Graduate School. The University Crest on the gonfalon
embodies the history of the University of Maine and its position as the state’s flagship university.
THE MACE Originally a weapon of offense used in medieval warfare, the mace has been refined into a symbolic device used on ceremonial occasions. The design of the University of Maine’s mace was suggested by members of the Department of Art’s spring 1996 sculpture class. The mace is carried in an upright position into the ceremony. During the ceremony, the mace rests in its stand in full view of the assembly as the emblem of authority. At the recession, the mace is carried in a downward position to represent the completion of the ceremony.
THE CAP The mortarboard cap, worn flat on the head with one corner of the square facing the front, has a tassel that may be black or the color assigned to the field of study. Doctors in all fields may wear a tassel of metallic gold. Some institutions have adopted the biretta or tam (for doctoral degrees) instead of the mortarboard.
THE HOOD The institution by which the degree was awarded and the field of study in which the degree was earned are represented by the hood. The lining of the hood identifies the institution that awarded the degree. The length of the hood and the width of its border vary in relation to the degree held.
THE GOWN The cut of the gown indicates whether the wearer holds a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree. The bachelor’s gown is a simple, unornamented robe with bell-shaped sleeves. The master’s gown is more elaborate with long sleeves closed at the end, with the arm passing through a slit above the elbow. The doctoral robe is ornamented with three bars on each sleeve and panels on the front. The standard color of the robe is black, although some institutions have adopted other colors.
