ImetAJinthemachineshoponemorning toperformsomelast-minutetensiletestson 3Dprintedspecimensforoneofmyprojects. Whenwefinished,Idonnedmybackpackand preparedtoleave.AJandIlookedacrossthe roomtoseeDr.Carricosittinginthemiddle oftheshopfloor,carefullymeasuringhislegs fromhiptotoewithameasuringtape.After aminute,Dr.Carriconoticedwewereobservinghimwithpuzzledfaces,andheletout aloudandembarrassedlaughbeforequickly standingupandstating, Youdon’tknowme!”

“IhaveajobofferlocatedinOklahoma City,OKwithBNSFRailway.Additionally,I amawaitingadecisionfromBobcatconcerningafull-timeofferhereinBismarck,ND.I willbemarryingmyfiancéeinJune,andwe willbemovingtooneofthesetwolocations tostartafamily.”

asasecondhometown.Ifeelveryathome hereandIcouldhardlyhopeforamorevibrantcommunitylifethanwhatisondisplay inBismarck.Ihadanopportunitytoseemuch ofthestateinmytravelsformy2020summer internship-anopportunityIamverythankfulfor,asitgavememoreofaninsightinto howBismarckandtheUniversityofMaryfit intothelargerstateandregionalcommunity.I thinkallofmyprofessorsdidanexcellentjob, andI’mgratefultoallofthemfortheircommitmenttomakingsureIhadagoodchanceto succeedintheirclasses.OneamusingmemoryIhaveisshootinganerfgunatbothDr. EricGarciaandAnthonyWaldenmier’sheads duringDynamicsclass.IfIremembercorrectly,anyteamofstudentsthatwasableto hitoneoftheprofessorsintheheadbycalculatingthecorrectlaunchangleofthenerfdart wasawardedbonuspointsonanexam.”

PeterCollartisgraduatingwithadegree inMechanicalEngineering.PeterisoriginallyfromCovington, GA.Hediscoveredthe UniversityofMary throughtheNewman listofCatholiccollegesanddecidedtocomebecauseofitsnew engineeringprogram.

“Iwasintriguedbythethoughtofbeing amongUMary’sfirstengineeringgraduates. Ichoseengineeringforacouplereasons.I beganentertainingtheideawhenmyeldest brotherbecameanuclearengineer.I’vealwaysbeenintriguedbyhowthingswork, andIlovemachinesandtechnology.Ibegan studyingMechanicalEngineeringanddiscoveredthatitwasthefitforme.Aftermy sophomoreyearIdidaninternshipatSteffes inDickinson,ND.Ilovedtheworkandthe companytreatedmeverywell(astheydoto alltheiremployees).Aftermyjunioryear,I internedatDoosanBobcatinBismarck,ND. Myinternshiphasbeenextendedthroughout therestofmysenioryear.Iworkpart-time alongsidemyclasses.Bobcathasbecomemy favoriteplacetoworkbecauseofthenature ofthejob.Iloveworkingontheadvanced machinesthatBobcatproduces,anditisuncommontobeabletoworkinsuchhigh-end facilitieslikeBobcat’sAccelerationCenter.”

“Idecidedtocometo theUniversityofMary foracombinationof reasons.Chiefamong thesewasthattheUniversityofMarycombinedanEngineering programwithexcellentCatholicStudiesand LiberalArtsclasses,which,asaCatholic, wereveryattractivetome.Otherfactorsthat drovemydecisionweretheaffordabilityof tuitionandtheabilitytotransferalmostall ofthecollegecreditsIhadamassedinhigh school.”

“Iwasalwaysgoodatmathinhighschool andIthoughtengineeringwouldbethemost interestingmath-relatedcareerfieldthatI couldgetinto.Ialsoknewthatthejobmarketforengineerswasfairlystrongandthat earningspotentialwassolid.I’vealwaysbeen somewhatofa‘big-picture’person,soIthink InaturallygravitatedtowardsCivilEngineering.Iseeitasthebranchofengineeringthat isabletosynthesizeworkfromotherbranches touseasapowerfulwholefortheadvancementofavisionorproject.Ididaninternship asaTechnician/SurveyorwithHoustonEngineeringinBismarckafterIfinishedmySenioryear,butbeforeIgraduatedinDecember 2020.Ilearnedagreatdealfromthisexperience,anditwasparticularlyhelpfulforme toseeconcreteexamplesofCivilEngineeringprojectsafterlearningsomuchtheoreticalknowledgeaboutthem.EventhoughIam planningtomovebacktoMinnesotainthe nearfuture,IwillalwaysthinkofBismarck

“Currently,myplansforthefutureactuallydonotinvolvemuchengineering.Next fall,Iamapplyingtoenterseminaryforthe ArchdioceseofSt.Paul/Minneapolisatthe UniversityofSt.ThomasinSt.Paul.This isnotbecauseIdonotenjoyengineering, butbecauseIthinkIcouldbecalledtobea Catholicpriest.Regardlessofwhathappens inmyvocationaldiscernmenthowever,Iwill alwaysbegratefulformyeducationinengineeringfromtheUniversityofMary.”

“IcametoUMarybecauseitwascloseto home,Iwantedto playsports,andIam Catholic,soitseemedlikeareallygoodfit. Atfirst,IchosetomajorinBiologywiththe intentionsofonedaygoingtomedicalschool, butonceIstartedtakingthoseclasses,Ibecamelessandlessinterested.Ithenhadthe chancetoworkwithmanyengineersoverthe summeratajobinBeulahwithDakotaGasificationCompany.Thisiswhatreallysparked myinterestandmademedecidetoswitch mymajortoMechanicalEngineering.This typeofengineeringinterestedmethemost,as growingup,mydadwouldalwaysworkon ourcarsandfindwaystofixthingshimself.”

Imayhavesomebiasesaboutthestate,butI loveeverythingthatNorthDakotahastooffer fromhuntingandfishing,totheclosenessof communitiesforthefamilythatIplanonraising.Ienjoyedmytimesinclasseswitheach ofmyprofessors.Ithinkthefunnieststory IhaveinvolvesthetimeIwentoutwithmy friendsandranintomyprofessorsandadvisor attheSport’sPageinsouthBismarck.Itwas funandIhadsomegoodconversationsthat youusuallydonothavewithsomeonethatis yoursuperior.”

“Idonothaveanyjobscurrentlylined up,butIhaveappliedtoseveralopeningsthat havecomeaboutintheBismarckarea.Iam notopposedtomovingsomewhereelse,but withmygirlfriendstartinggraduateschoolat UMaryinthefall,stayingclosetoherisatop priorityforme.”

“Iwasoriginallytakingsecondarymatheducationanddecided,after11/2years,Ididn’t wanttobeateacher.Ialwaysenjoyedapplyingmath,soIthoughtI’dgiveengineeringa shot.Outofcivil,mechanical,andelectrical, Ichosemechanicalbecauseitinterestedme themost.I’veenjoyedengineeringeversince thechangeinmajors.”

ElectricalEngineering studentwhowasborn intheWestfjordsof Icelandbutalsogrew upinatowncalled Þorlákshöfnonthe southcoast.

Ihadheardengineeringwasdifficult,soI wantedtopreparewellandwenttobecomean electricianbeforecomingtoUMary.Ididnot knowwhatkindofengineeringuntilIstarted classestowardsbeinganelectrician.There wasjustsomethingaboutelectricitythatintriguedmeandhereIam.Iworkedfortwo summersatVerkísConsultingEngineeringin Reykjavík,Iceland.Iwaspositionedwithin theirenergyfieldwhereImostlyassistedthe otherengineerswithmiscellaneousworkregardingpowersystemsandhighvoltage.I alsodidconstructionsupervisioninproject management.ThislastsummerIworkedas anelectricianatSkinney-ÞinganesinHöfn, Iceland.Theyareintheseafoodprocessingindustrybutalsoownoneofthelargest dairyfarmsinthecountry.Iworkedmostly onthefarmdoingelectricalinstallationwork afterconstruction,butalsomaintenancework intheirfactoryaswellasontheirtrawlers. Thelatteronewasprobablymyfavoriteeven thoughitwasmoreelectricianworkthanengineering,butagricultureandtheseafoodindustryismoretomyliking.Iwasnotsure whattothinkofNorthDakotaatfirst,butI thinkIwasexpectingmoresnow.Thecommunityherebothoncampusandintownis probablymyfavoritethingaboutBismarck.I thinkallmyprofessorsareprettycool.They havealwaysbeenincrediblyhelpfulandsupportingregardingbothacademicsandathletics.”

“InayearortwoIplantogotograduate schoolandcontinuemyeducation,perhaps Denmarkthistime.UntilthenIplantogo backtoIcelandandworkthereandgetsome moreexperience,Ihavebeenofferedtwojob opportunitiessofarbuthavenotdecidedyet. “IbecameinterestedinElectricalEngineeringeversincefreshmanyearofhigh school.Duringthattime,Ihadaretired electricalengineerwhohadworkedforthe U.S.Navyteachingmyphysicsclass.Althoughhewasknowntobeastrictanddifficultprofessor(whichIcanverify),hewas alsoverydown-to-earthandeasytogetalong with.Heoftentoldthestudentsstoriesofthe dailylifeofanengineer,includingallofits perksanddrawbacks,allofhistriumphsand mishaps.Ilookedtohimassortofamentor, andeversincethen,Iaspiredtogodowna similarcareerpath.Atfirst,itwasaculture shockmovingtoBismarck,especiallysinceI livedinthenortheastallmylife.Despitethe harshwinters,theplacehasgrownonme.I enjoythenaturalsceneryoncampusandin town.Itspeoplearesimpleandthegeneral atmosphereissilentcomparedtoplacesthat Iwasusedto.I’vemadelastingfriendships andunforgettablememorieshere.Inmany ways,thisplacehasbecomeasecondhome. Myprofessorswerenotonlyveryknowledgeable,butalsowereabletocommunicatethat knowledgeclearlyandefficiently.Somewere quirky.Somewerestrict;otherswerelaid back.Butallofthemhelpedmeattainmy degree,whichdefinitelywasnoteasyandfor whichIamgrateful.Asforfunnystories, Iremembermyclassofelectricalengineers hadtotakeaclassoncomputeraidedmeasurements.Oneofthein-classassignments wastodemonstratenormaldistributionusing computersimulation.Theprofessorthoughtit wouldbeagreatideatoshowthisconceptby simulatingdrunkcrossingthestreet.Theidea wasthatifadrunkpersonweretostumbleleft orrightashewaswalkingacrossthestreet, thelocationwhereheendsupattheotherend ofthestreetwillresembleanormaldistributiongivenmultipletrials.Thiswasdefinitely oneofthemoreinterestingassignmentsthatI hadduringcollege.

“IpreviouslygraduatedfromThomas AquinasCollegewithaBAinliberalarts.I wasunabletofindajobIliked.Iwascertainteachingwasn’tforme.So,Idecided toreturntocollegeforapracticaldegree.I hadoriginallyplannedonstudyingengineeringbeforeIheardthesirensongoftheliberal arts.Returningtocollegeforengineeringwas anobrainerforme.IdecidedonElectrical EngineeringbecauseIhaveavaguememory ofvisitinganengineeringcollegebackinhigh school,andtheelectricalstudentstherewere inaroboticscompetition.Robotsarecool,so ElectricalEngineeringmustbethecoolest.I wasalsotoldtheElectricalEngineeringwas themostdifficultkindofengineeringtodo.I stilldon’tknowifthisistrue,butifIwasgoingtoprovethatIcoulddoit,Ibetterdothe hardestkind.IhadtwointernshipsatKilldeer MountainManufacturinglocatedinKilldeer NorthDakota.Iworkedasatestengineering internandgainedsomevaluableexperiences. ThewinnerofthElectricalEngineering ScholarshipthisyearwasJuniorElectrical EngineeringstudentChandlerOlson.

Kolbeisoneofthoserarestudentswhoshow remarkablematurity,foresight,appreciation forlearning.Heisrespectfulandadelightto teach.Kolbeapplieshimselfwithremarkable vigoranddeterminationtoeverything,butis notoverlyintenseorexcessivelydriven.He hasavisionforwhereheisheadedinlife,but iscompletelyopentoadviceandinputfrom hisinstructors.Kolbehasthetechnicalabilityandpeopleskillstobeanoutstandingconstructionmanagerandaleaderinhischosen profession.

SENIOR DESIGN PRESENTATIONS

OnFriday,April16,theSeniorspresentedtheirdesignprojectsfromProfessor TomVolkman’sSeniorDesigncourse.This isthecapstonecourseforourengineeringdegreesandsoaveryhighstandardisexpected. Wewerenotdisappointed!Theprojectswere notonlyamazing,buteachofthemcouldeasilybecomethefoundationforafuturecompanyifthestudentssochose.

CivilEngineeringMACExpansion

HarrisonBentzel,LoganMahoney,and MitchellOehmepresentedtheirdesignfor anexpansiontotheMcDowellActivityCenter(MAC)attheUniversityofMary.The projectwassuggestedbytheheadwrestling coach,AdamAho.ThecurrentMACfacilitiesforwrestling,strengthtraining,andendurancetrainingarecrowdedduetothelarge numberofteamsandacademicprogramsusingthefacilities.LoganandMitchell,who arebothCivilEngineersandstudentathletes, wereeagertodesignabuildingthatwouldsuit theneedsoftheproject’sstakeholders;the coaches,staff,teams,andfaculty.

BlakeEmmel,PeterCollart,JoshuaReiner, andGabrielZimmerdesignedaSelective LaserSintering(SLS)3Dprinter.ASLS3D printerusesahigh-powerlasertobuildplastic andmetalpartsfromabedofpowderedprecursormaterialbyselectivelyfusingtracesof thepowderedmaterialtogetherinalayer-bylayerprocess.

SnædísDaníelsdóttir,JoshSnyder,andJeffreyStrongdesignedafeederfororphan lambs.Thefeederprototypeshowsabucket withacopperheatingcoilinsideitandtwo teatsonthesidewhichwouldfeedthelambs.

Afterseveralmeetingswiththestakeholders andevenatourofSt.Mary’srecentlyrenovatedwrestlingfacilities,aninitialfloorplan wasset.LoganandMitchellthensetout toresearchstructuralneedsforthefacility; liveloads,deadloads,windloads,structural supports,materials,andmore.Theyenlisted thehelpofHarrison,aMechanicalEngineer, todesigntheHVACsystemsforthefacility. Asthisisgoingtobeanathleticsspace,the HVACsystemwouldneedtobefarmoreadvancedthananordinarybuilding.Harrison neededtoconsiderelementslikeheattransfer, airflow,heatingandcoolingrequirements, andmoisturecontrolthatwouldbeadequate forathletictrainingspace.

LoganandMitchellwillcontinuetheirdesignintothefallsemesterinECI482Civil EngineeringDesignproject.Thenextsteps includeaddressingthefoundationdesign,tyingintotheexistingstructure,andtheexterior designtomeetUniversityofMary’saesthetic standards.

TheSLS3Dprinterconsistsofapowdermanagementsystemthatdepositslayersofthe powderedprecursoronthebuildstage,ahighpowerCO2laserspeciallyselectedforuse withNylonandotherpolymermaterials,and agalvomirrorsystemthatreflectsthelaser ontothepowderbedandscansitathighspeed alongtheintendedscanningtrajectories.

Thesystemthattheybuiltisautonomous,but hasmorefeaturesthatarenecessarytolamb feedingthananysystemthatisavailableinthe markettoday.Ithaswarmmilkreadysothat babylambsarenothesitanttodrink.They havedesignedthesystemwithamultitudeof sensorsandelectronicstofeedanumberof babylambswhenevertheyarehungrywithan RFIDscannerthatscansanelectronicIDon theirearsandflowsensorstogivethefarmer informationabouttheamountofmilkeach lambhasconsumed.Thesystemalertsthe farmerwhenitistimetocleanoutthesystem andalsoifthemilkisrunninglowinthestorageunit.Acomputerwillstoretheamount ofmilkconsumedbyeachlamb,therebyenablingonetotrackwhethereachlambisgettingenoughmilktoremainhealthyandthere isacontroldisplaywhichallowsallofthe programminganddatacollectiontobeautomatedviaCprogramsandBashscripts.

Thestudentsdesignedandfabricatedthe3D printerusingT-slotframing,3D-printedparts, steppermotorsandArduinosforcontrol.

Inmid-April,Snædíspresentedherorphan lambfeederseniordesignprojecttothestudentsatSimleMiddleSchoolinBismarck. Shediscussedtheprojectandshealsotold themwhatitisliketobeafemaleengineeringstudentandastudentathlete.Anumber ofexcitedgirlscameuptoherafterwardto

SophomorelevelCivilEngineering(CE), MechanicalEngineering(ME),andConstructionManagement(CM)studentsweretasked todesignandconstructa3Dprintedbridge cablemadeupofonlyPLA,10lbsfishing wire,andglue.Thebridgesweretospana 75cmgapaswellashavethefunctiontolift thebridgeplatform20cmup.Inadditionto satisfyingthesetwodefiningobjectives,studentswerealsotaskedtodesigntheirbridges tocarryasmuchloadastheycouldwithoutdeflectingmorethan2cmandcarry10lbs whenthebridgeisinitsliftedposition,whilst beingaseconomicalaspossibleascostswere associatedwithweightandmaterialswhich dictatedthebridgesfinalscore.Teamswere comprisedofCE,MEandCMstudents,each focusingontheirareaofthedesigns.CEstudentsfocusedonthebridge,MEstudentsfocusedonthemechanismtoliftthebridge,and CMstudentsfocusedonmanagingthebudget andthescheduleoftheproject.

Theprimarypurposeoftheirprojectwasto applywhattheylearnedintheirsteeldesign coursetodesignthestructuralsteelframeworkofanewSchoolofHealthSciences BuildingfortheUniversityofMary.Thestudentsweregivenlistsofdesignrequirements thatneededtobemettosatisfycertainarchitecturalandstructuralspecifications,aswell asclientdemands.Theserequirementsincludedthingssuchascertainnumberoflabs, classroomsizes,sitearea,buildingfootprint sizerestrictions,andatornadoshelter,etc.

LastyeartheUniversityofMarypurchasedapropertyonEastFrontAvenue thathousedthedowntownBismarck-Burleigh PublicHealthbuilding.ThisiswheretheEngineeringschoolwastemporarylocatedduringthe2019-2020academicyearwhilethe newfacilitiesoncampuswerebeingconstructed.Thecurrentintentofthepurchased landisfortheUniversityofMarytoeventuallybuildanewhomedowntownforits SchoolofHealthandSciences.Juniorlevel CivilEngineeringstudentsinECI451Steel Designweretaskedwithaprojecttopropose theirownarchitecturalandstructuralsteeldesignforanewbuildingfortheSchoolHealth andSciencesonthatproperty.

Aspartofthestructuralsteelframework design,studentswereheavilyassessedon theirabilitytodesignsteelbeams,girders, columns,connections,andframingwithrespecttodead,live,andwindloads,aswellas serviceabilitylimits.Studentswerealsoassessedontheirarchitecturaldesignandtheir design’sabilitytosatisfythebuildingcriteria giventothem.

DICE GAME ByTERRYPILLING

HereisaBashshellscriptfromourfreshman ENR210 course.Itisadicegamein

OurSophomorestudentsintheirEngineeringDesignLabIandEngineeringDesignLabIIcoursesweretaskedwithdesigning,building,andracingtheirownreal-life versionofthevideogameMarioKart,a.k.a. MarauderKart.Studentsspecificallyhadto engineeraremote-controlledcar,adynamic obstacle,andastaticstructureforaracecourselocatedintheEngineeringbuilding classroomsandhallways.Theclasswasbrokenintosevendifferentteams,eachhaving fourtofivestudentsandconsistedofsophomoreMechanical,Civil,andElectricalEngineeringstudents.Studentsfromthedifferentdisciplineshadtocollaborateandwork togethertodesign,document,andbuildthe assignedprojects.Certaincriteriaregardingeachprojectwereprovided,suchasthe remote-controlledcarhadtohaveacamera mountedonitasthedriverwouldberequired todrivebyonlylookingatascreenshowingthecamerafeedwhilebeingseatedaway fromthecourse.Teamswereassigneddifferenttypesofdynamicstructurestobuild,

suchasbridges,elevators,androtatingtunnels,whilethestaticstructureswerecompletelyuptothestudents.Outsideofthefew criteriagiven,therestofprojectwasdesigned anddeterminedbythestudents,includingthe racerulesandracecourselayout.Throughoutthetwosemestersstudentswouldprovide progressupdatepresentationsanddocument theirdesignworkandmanufacturingprocess.

Inadditiontodoingthetechnicaldesignand manufacturingofthedifferentprojects,studentswererequiredtomanageanddocument theirbudgetandschedule.

Theracewasfourlapsandwasaclose competitionbetweentwoteamsintheend. ThewinningteamconsistedofMaraDalton(civil),NathanDesMarais(mechanical), HeidiJacobson(civil),MargaretKuhar(elec-

trical),andBenPihl(mechanical).Thewinnersofthecompetitionreceiveda$100gift cardfromProfessorAnthonyGarciaandProfessorEricGarcia.
