Nanofabrication Laboratory (NFL)

Materials Characterization Lab

NERVE Center Facility

The Mark and Elisia Saab Emerging Technologies and Innovation Center is home to our 4,200square-foot, Abbie Gregg-designed Class 100, 1,000 and 10,000 clean room.

Our laboratory is the University’s core facility for the characterization of solid materials and biological specimens. The facility offers a combined laboratory space of 4,000 square feet in the Olney Science Center and Mark and Elisia Saab Emerging Technologies and Innovation Center.

Our 10,000-square-foot robot test center, located at 1001 Pawtucket Boulevard, is the first and only comprehensive site of its kind in New England. A dedicated research, testing, and training facility featuring test courses for indoor and outdoor environments, pushing the limits of mobility, manipulation, and autonomy. Applications include home, industrial, military, and disaster response.

The professionally managed laboratory is designed to service industrial and academic community researchers. Our sophisticated capabilities include e-beam lithography, thin film deposition, etching and lab metrology capabilities. Additionally, we encourage discussions of placement of your equipment in our clean room bays. Our infrastructure includes advanced gas delivery, abatement and toxic gas monitoring systems.

We offer quality, sophisticated, state-of-the-art imaging and analytical instrumentation, including a variety of optical, scanned probe, electron and ion beam-based microscopies, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, light scattering techniques and time-of-flight-mass spectrometry. The Lab also offers three liquid state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) instruments, and Thermal Analysis & Material Properties equipment.

The Facility features replicas of the National Institute of Standards and Technology's Standard Test Methods for Robots, water courses designed in collaboration with the U.S. Army, and scenario set-ups that simulate real-world situations. Our rates include the expertise of our robotics team and a comprehensive video recording of your session from multiple perspectives is provided.
