But Don’t Just Take Our Word for It Local, Regional and National Recognition • According to the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), UMass Memorial Medical Center has ranked fourth in Massachusetts for surviving a heart attack for four years in a row. Two of the top four hospitals in Massachusetts for surviving a heart attack are part of UMass Memorial Health Care (UMass Memorial Medical Center and HealthAlliance Hospital). We deliver exceptional care — and we have the patient success stories to prove it. • The Society of Thoracic Surgeons has awarded UMass Memorial three stars (its highest designation) for cardiac surgery for five years in a row, and ranks us among the top 12 percent of heart surgery programs nationwide. • Our success rate for patients having isolated coronary artery bypass surgery in 2010 was 100 percent. And since 2006, our success rate has been consistently better than the annual average rate set by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. • HealthGrades, the leading independent health care ratings company, has ranked UMass Memorial among the top five percent in the nation for overall cardiac services and cardiac surgery for two years in a row, and for coronary interventional procedures for three years in a row. • Our Cardiac Surgery Program received the 2009 Betsy Lehman Patient Safety Recognition Award from the Betsy Lehman Center for Patient Safety and Medical Error Reduction, a nod to our culture of safety. • Our vascular surgeons were the first in New England to use branched endovascular grafts for treating specific types of aneurysms. And our Code Rupture Program for treating patients with symptomatic or ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) has reduced by half the mortality for this challenging condition. • Our Cardiac Surgery Program received a three-star rating for heart bypass surgery from Consumer Reports magazine — a rating above the national average. The Medical Center’s program is one of only 81 nationwide to receive this rating based on overall performance, complications and other quality measures.
