I’m well because…Dr. Kraus was available for me My son is well because of the excellent emergency room staff and Dr. Kraus. On Valentine's Day 2012, I got the call every mother dreads. My beautiful 11 year old boy had been hit while snowboarding and they were unsure how bad his leg was. I wish I remembered the names of all the wonderful ER people.
Dr. Kraus came in the morning and did the first of two eventual surgeries. I have never been so scared or confident at the same time. Dr. Kraus was available for every dumb question, every little freak out I had. My son now has no lasting damage other than a few scars and a scary story. I owe my son’s leg to the wonderful staff of UMass Memorial. Jen Holzer
I’m well because‌The Hand Clinic Gave Me Back My Career
After years of pain, numbness and suffering in my hands, the staff and surgeon in the hand center from UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester performed a miracle and gave me back my hands and my career. Stacey Velasquez
I’m well because‌I Have Wonderful Range of Motion I suffered for years with pain in my shoulder and down my arm. The doctor I went to in New York continued to tell me that I had arthritis and every two months would give me an injection. About 4 months after I moved up to MA from NY, I went to an orthopedic physician for the pain. He looked at the results of the MRI and told me that I most definitely did not have arthritis, but that I did have a torn rotator cuff, made worse from all the injections I had received. Thanks to Dr. Thomas Goss, my rotator cuff was repaired, with a beautiful scar, and I have had a wonderful range of motion since. I feel like all the doctors associated with UMass Memorial are Gods. I’m well because‌ Dr. Calkins Fixed the Pain and Numbness I'm well because of the excellent care I received during treatment for carpel tunnel. Dr. Edward Calkins was my surgeon and he and the people in the Hand Clinic were wonderful. They were very accommodating while scheduling appointments that worked best for me and I was able to choose the best date for my surgery. Dr. Calkins and the entire staff at the UMass Memorial Hahnemann Campus were excellent. They made me feel very relaxed and at ease prior to and after surgery. I received a call the next day to see how I was feeling and if I needed anything. I am happy to report that the pain and numbness I was experiencing is gone! This was my second carpel tunnel surgery by Dr. Calkins. I have since recommended him to family members and coworkers who are having similar symptoms. Thank you Dr. Calkins! Kimberly Bergin
I’m well because‌I Am Exercising for My Daughter
My Daughter is getting married this year motivating both of us to get in shape. We are both doing a daily cardio work out and using weight watchers app on our phones to track our daily food intake. I am walking inside to build my exercise tolerance. I had a knee replacement and walking without pain is wonderful. Feeling better and having more energy is a plus. - Kathleen Murray
I’m well because… Dr. Mortimer Was Beyond Our Greatest Thoughts My daughter that has special situations needed surgery. My husband and I knew who would be the best orthopedic surgeon to operate on. But we did go for a second opinion in Boston. That was not a good choice for our child. Dr. Errol Mortimer was beyond our greatest thoughts for this rough long surgery. He is just the best in my families’ book. We could never thank him enough. And our child adores him! UMass Memorial is very Lucky to have him and so is pediatrics! Judy Shapiro
‌ he will always have a place in my heart When I was 6 months old I was diagnosed with neurofibromas, I had a curve in my right leg. Dr. Arthur Papas became my doctor. I've had bone grafts, and rods put into my leg to try to help the curve, I lived my whole childhood in UMass Memorial, I wasn't able to run, jump, swim, roller blade...and at 9 I had my leg amputated and my whole life changed...I got the roller blades I longed for, and I was able to run now, and I could walk with the other kids. I continued to see Dr. Papas until he retired when I was 18. He was an amazing man and he will always have a place in my heart. - Shannon Needler
I’m well because… of Dr. Price
I had rotator cuff surgery on both of my shoulders. They both got infected and we couldn’t figure out why. Dr. Price discovered that my left arm had vicryl sutures from my first shoulder operation. They said my body rejected them. They are supposed to dissolve, but didn't. Many times I thought I would lose my arm. No one was helping me. I am glad that. Dr. Price was able to help me. Thanks. - Ruth Kirk
I'm well because Dr. Kay gave me the chance to act my age and live a normal life. Growing up with JA is tough because its hard to explain to people that kids get arthritis too and pain is such a hidden disease. When simple tasks like brushing your teeth and walking downstairs are a challenge you feel the disease winning. I felt like I was losing control of who I was as a person. I did not want to become a victim to arthritis. Deciding to go to a University that was not close to my hometown and RA doctor was a decision that I was not going to let arthritis make for me. Dr. Kay worked seamlessly with my doctor at school and it made the transition easy and stress free. He answers my emails immediately and is so accommodating to my schedule when I am home for a couple of days he always makes time for me. Dr. Kay cares and his interest in my life and hobbies is proof of that. He doesn't minimize my pain but pushes me to participate in everything that I set my mind on. He provides solutions to pain that are manageable and not life altering. I can carry on as though I have no disease. I'm well because Dr. Kay gave me back my ability to do my favorite hobby of running and that allows me to me at my happiest. - Rena Samuels
