Commencement 2012 Each year, the University of Michigan is fortunate enough to host one of the world’s most influen>al leaders as the speaker for spring commencement, such as Walter Cronkite, Larry Page, and Barack Obama. This year’s speaker is no excep>on. Sanjay Gupta – a UM alum – is CNN's chief medical correspondent, hos>ng Sanjay Gupta, MD and making frequent appearances on American Morning and Anderson Cooper 360. Gupta received his undergraduate degree in biomedical sciences, earned his M.D., and completed his residency all at the University of Michigan. When he was a student, he was a member of the Men’s Glee Club, wrote for The Michigan Daily, and worked as a Resident Advisor. Gupta traveled to Iraq in 2003 to report on medical condi>ons during the war. While overseas, he provided live coverage of the first opera>on performed during the war, and he performed life-‐saving brain surgery five >mes in a desert opera>ng room. In 2009, Gupta was approached by the Obama administra>on to become the next Surgeon General of the United States; however, Gupta removed his name from considera>on on account of his family and career. Gupta has won 3 Emmys as a reporter, and his two books, “Chasing Life” (2007) and “Chea>ng Death” (2009) have become bestsellers. Make sure to give him a warm welcome back to campus when he speaks at Spring Commencement on April 28th! For more informa>on on commencement, please visit hEp://www.umich.edu/~gradinfo/. Stay Active this Summer Now that the blistering cold of winter has gone away and the sunny, allergy-‐ filled days of summer 2012 fast approach, remember to stay ac>ve while enjoying the break from classes! Many students who are staying in Ann Arbor plan to take advantage of the warm weather as well as the varied resources available at U-‐M and around the city to stay in shape. If you want to get out and indulge in the summer>me weather, here are some op>ons around Ann Arbor that you may want to check out: • An Ann Arbor favorite, you can take a stroll or jog in the Nichols Arboretum. • Gallup Park is Ann Arbor’s most popular recrea>on area and offers canoe, paddleboat and kayak rentals on the Huron River. • Located south of campus between Olivia and Baldwin Avenue, Burns Park is perfect for the sports enthusiast with ameni>es such as tennis courts, sooball diamonds, and a pleasant picnic area. • Dog lovers can take their canine companions to Swio Run Dog Park on the south side of the city. If you are interested in staying ac>ve but don’t love the Great Outdoors, no worries! There are plenty of indoor programs that are sure to suit your taste. Together, MHealthy & UMove Fitness are teaming up to offer more than 150 exercises & relaxa>on classes that run throughout the spring and summer. Beat the Heat With summer fast-‐approaching, it’s important to take precau>ons in order to prevent heat-‐related illnesses – including heat exhaus>on, heat stroke, and sunburn – from taking their toll. Visit the UHS website to learn the warning signs of these illnesses, and look over their >ps on how to stay cool throughout the summer: Cut back on strenuous outdoor ac>vity. Exercise during the early morning or late evening hours when heat and ozone levels are at the lowest of the day. Drink plenty of hydra>ng fluids (avoid alcohol). You should increase your fluid intake, regardless of your ac>vity level. Don't wait un>l you're thirsty to drink. Avoid very cold drinks, because they can cause stomach cramps. Replace salts and minerals, which are lost through heavy swea>ng. A sports beverage can replenish the salt and minerals you lose in sweat. Wear lightweight, light-‐colored, loose-‐fiung clothing. Avoid sunburn, which affects your body's ability to cool itself and causes a loss of body fluids. Go swimming. U-‐M offers three pools on campus (NCRB, CCRB, and the IM Building). If you must go outdoors, protect yourself from the sun by puung on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher (the most effec>ve products say “broad spectrum” or “UVA/UVB” on their labels). Local, Fresh and Delicious Before the year ends, make sure you stop by the Ann Arbor Farmers Market! Especially if you have late exams or plan to s>ck around for the summer and want fresh produce, you will enjoy this outdoor market. It is located in Ann Arbor’s Historic Kerrytown District, only a short walk from campus on Detroit and 5th Street. Currently, the market is open Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., but star>ng in May, it will also be open on Wednesdays. I picked up some groceries there with my roommate a few weeks ago, and we loved it. She bought some goose eggs, which taste very similar to chicken eggs but are quite a bit bigger. The local farmer told us that her eggs are fer>le, her chicken and geese are all free range, and she could even tell us what she feeds them. We also purchased pes>cide free apples and potatoes as well as homemade honey-‐oat bread and Italian bread. Our favorite purchase were pas>es – a northern Michigan specialty – which were homemade and frozen. Besides the fresh jams, pastries, pastas, meats and other in-‐season produce available, local vendors also sell jewelry, clothing, purses, wallets and other handmade products. It’s a great way to start off the weekend, so check it out! Wri1en by Sabrina Palombo
Protect your Belongings Theos of unaEended belongings on the University of Michigan campus significantly have increased in the first three months of 2012 compared with 2011. The University Police remind students, faculty and staff to secure their valuables at all >mes. Be sure to reduce the opportuni>es for theos by not leaving laptops, wallets, cell phones, purses, backpacks and book bags unaEended for any length of >me. It takes less than a minute for a thief to take your belongings. The U-‐M Department of Public Safety offers a free Laptop Registra>on Program to members of the campus community to deter theo and assist in the recovery of stolen property. Once you register your laptop (or other electronic device) online, you'll receive two s>ckers in the mail, which help serve as a theo deterrent when placed on your laptop. Addi>onally, if your laptop is found or recovered, the registra>on record will help DPS return your laptop to you. Visit www.police.umich.edu to register. Remember, if you see suspicious ac>vity, call the 9-‐1-‐1 immediately or text U-‐M Police at 377911.
The Hottest Films this Summer This summer, Hollywood is blazing with a generous amount of highly an>cipated movies. Ranging from ac>on-‐packed superhero movies to laughter-‐inducing comedies, here are some of our picks: • The Avengers (May 4) – Featuring Thor, Captain America, Iron Man the Hulk and many more, this looks like the biggest superhero movie ever! • Dark Shadows (May 11) – Warner Bros, Tim Burton and Johnny Depp team up again (they’ve already made 8 films in the past)! Their aEempt at a campy vampire movie is certainly interes>ng to say the least. • Men in Black 3 (May 25) – A nostalgic flick for those of us who grew up watching reruns of the Men In Black movies on the weekends. • Rock of Ages (June 15) – Tom Cruise, Russell Brand and Alec Baldwin play hardcore rockers in a Broadway adapta>on directed by the man who made A Walk to Remember and Hairspray. This cannot be missed. • Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (June 22) – Keira Knightley, Steve Carell and Adam Brody come together for an interes>ng disaster-‐themed roman>c dramedy. Directed by Lorene Scafaria, director of Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist, this eclec>c mix seems like fun! • The Dark Night Rises (July 20) – Christopher Nolan has done an amazing job reinterpre>ng the beloved Batman series, and with a seasoned cast featuring Liam Neeson, Chris>an Bale and Morgan Freeman, this is sure to be another hit. • Neighborhood Watch (July 27) – What happens when a group of famously hilarious guys like Ben S>ller, Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill stumble upon an alien invasion during their faux neighborhood watch mee>ngs? We’re guessing side-‐spliung fun! This season is going to be a rollercoaster ride with these and many more big blockbusters on the way. Which ones will you be seeing? Wri1en by Emily Ho
