We hope you’re enjoying the start of Autumn, one of the most beautiful seasons Michigan has to offer. The time is quickly approaching when students begin searching for housing. Beyond the Diag is now officially your home for off-campus housing, hosting the University’s redesigned off-campus housing listing service. You can access the website using your Uniqname and Kerberos password. The new version of the website allows you to search for housing based on your price range, location, number of bedrooms, and/or bathrooms. There’s also a roommate/sublet finder and a message board. This mobile-friendly listing service is interactive, with pictures of the properties as well as contact and rental information for each property listed on the site. The site allows you to safely navigate your search for housing whether it be a house, apartment, studio or roommates. Good luck! Forever Go Blue, Stephanie Karaa, Matt Lonnerstater, and Emily Lustig Beyond the Diag Program Assistants
Eating Green Finding green eating options can be hard when you are living off-campus and cooking on your own. Fortunately, Ann Arbor is full of places to buy locally grown and organic food, all within walking distance! Here are some of our favorites: Ann Arbor Farmer’s Market: 315 Detroit Street Farmer’s Markets are in full swing during the fall! Full of fresh produce every Saturday and Wednesday until December, stop by and support local farmers and artisans. And while you’re in Kerrytown, head up the street to Treasure Mart and explore the reusable goods in this eclectic shop. www.a2gov.org/market Babo: 403 E. Washington Street Opened last year and located just off-campus, this small grocery not only offers locally produced food, but has a great atmosphere and outdoor seating. So if you’re looking for fresh produce, a pre-made deli sandwich, or just a fair-trade cup of coffee, come by and support this locally-owned shop. Peoples’ Food Co-op: 216 N. Fourth Avenue This community-owned natural food grocery offers a selection of bulk items in addition to a hot and cold food bar, cafe, and everyday organic eating options. The store also has food from other local Ann Arbor restaurants and cafes as well as organic and cruelty-free health and beauty products. Sparrow Market: 415 N. Fifth Avenue This market is known for its quality meats, but also offers an excellent choice of produce, specialty items, and everyday grocery needs. It is located right next to the farmer’s market in the Kerrytown Market & Shops where you can also find unique stores full of local and sustainable merchandise. A Decision Your Advisor Can’t Help You With Halloween at Michigan is awesome. If you’re like me and terrified of haunted corn mazes and scary movies, dressing up and getting together with friends is a great alternative to staying inside hiding under a blanket. Whether it will be your first or fifth time celebrating in Ann Arbor, you’ll want to ensure that your Halloween costume is one that you will want to upload to Instragram to show all of your friends.
If Halloween is like school, choosing your costume is like choosing your major. It is single handedly the most important decision that you’re going to make on October 31. I tend to dress up as people that I wish I could be (Egyptian goddess circa 30 BC). Your costume will not only determine the character you play for the rest of the night, but it also gives you a chance to showcase a part of your personality that may not come out very often! Group size is also something that you should consider while planning your costume. If you’re dressing up with friends or roommates, you may want to choose a costume theme like superheroes or Nintendo characters. If you want to dress up with your significant other, go as a not-so-classic duo like Olive Oyl and Popeye to prevent reactions like “OMG, another Ken and Barbie, so original!” Last but certainly not least, if you’re flying solo, you have free reign to dress however you would like. Some of the more creative costumes I have seen in my three Halloweens at Michigan include tacky tourists, the minions from Despicable Me, and the Blues Brothers. One last tip- plan for the weather! Opt for leggings under a dress or a pair of tall socks. Your friends will thank you for not complaining about the cold, trust me! Contributed by Callie Kalinowski Photo from Good Costume Ideas
Safety Tip of the Month If you must walk alone at night, avoid unlit areas, have your keys in hand before getting to your destination and avoid unfamiliar areas. You can get a free (one-way) taxi ride per night through Safe Ride from any on-campus building between 10:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. at (734) 647-8000. Other Important Numbers: Ann Arbor Police Department: (734) 994-2911 University of Michigan Police Department: (734) 763-1131 *Don't be afraid to call for help, report all suspicious behavior! Halloweekends 2013 at Cedar Point Cedar Point is the second oldest theme park in the US, and is located in Ohio. Despite it's unfortunate location, the theme park is only a 2 hour drive away from Ann Arbor, and the closest place for those looking for roller coaster rides. While Halloween may be officially on October 31st, the festivities to celebrate the annual spookfest at Cedar Point begin much earlier. Starting from September 13th, the entire theme park will transform, every weekend night, into a wonderland for thrill-seekers looking for some haunted fun. The park has a variety of attractions for all kinds of people: Scare zones: Cedar Point hosts a variety of haunted walking paths where you're bound to get goosebumps. How does “Maniacal Mechanical Screamworks“ sound? Mazes: As if getting lost in seemingly endless and hopeless mazes isn't enough, Cedar Point offers haunted mazes for people to venture through. Shows: To add to the experiential attractions, there are also different shows for your eyes to feast on. Check out the "Skeleton Crew" for a horror themed circus show, or the "Halloween Hullaboo" musical!
Rides: And for those who still want the typical roller coaster rides, all the Cedar Point rides are still open
Halloweekends, with all its attractions and events, is definitely worth visiting if you're love adventure, enjoy a good scare, or simply want to celebrate Halloween in a more exciting fashion. Taking Your School Pride on the Road As the football season heats up, we want to show our school spirit and prove why Michigan really is home to the leaders and the best. It’s important, however, to show that Wolverines are respectful fans and gracious winners. While other schools may want to take advantage of their home fields and large student sections, here are a few steps you can take to avoid an antagonizing situation: Avoid the use of foul language, obscene gestures/messages, and threats. Don’t bring apparel and signs with profane or abusive language to the game. Respect local athletic officials and law enforcement. Follow the instructions of law enforcement personnel, and listen to game announcements in case of an emergency.
Stay in the blue and encourage your friends to do the same. Inappropriate behavior can ruin the game for others and may lead to your removal from the event. Expect Respect. Treat the fans around you with respect regardless of their school colors to ensure that everyone has a good time. Contributed by Ana Tkach
Flu and Colds and Other Woes – Oh My!
Can you spare a few days away from classes or research to be down with the flu? Most students can’t, so prevention is key, both for yourself and those around you. The best move is to get a flu shot this year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone ages 6 and older get vaccinated against the flu. And you’ll need a flu shot each year before winter because flu strains vary from year to year. University Health Service (UHS) now has preservative-free flu shots available. To schedule, call 734764-8320, and allow at least 30 minutes for your visit. Cost is $44, and payment is expected at your visit. You can pay with major credit/debit cards, cash and personal checks, and enrolled students can also bill to a student account. The following insurance plans will cover the cost in full: GradCare, Domestic Student Health Insurance Plan (Aetna), International Student/Scholar Health Insurance Plan (Aetna), U-M Premier Care, and Medicare. If you have any other plan, please consult it because coverage varies. Unfortunately, flu vaccine can’t prevent colds, so you’ll also want to avoid germs as much as possible. Clean your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based cleanser. If possible, avoid close contact with people who are sick. If you’re sick, keep your distance from others and stay at home when you can. When coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve, not your hand. Additionally, avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Sick and need some help? UHS has you covered. Refer to Know Your Symptoms (PDF), a poster from UHS that explains when you can take care of yourself and when to seek health care. You can call UHS for nurse advice by phone, day or night: Call 734-764-8320 when UHS is open or 866-204-1082 (toll-free) when UHS is closed. Fall Football – Can’t Stay Away From the Wins We’re already four games into the semester and Michigan’s football is already at its peak start …especially after our game against Notre Dame. The night game was a huge success, with Michigan taking a 41-30 victory against the Irish. Michigan students are already even more excited about this season’s football than our previous seasons. After losing to Alabama in 2012, our season started off slower and almost evened out for the wins and losses. However this year, Michigan is looking on par with a 4-0 head start on the season. Luckily, we were able to pull out two wins in close games against Akron (28-24) and UConn (24-21). I had some doubts leading into this season about Devin Gardner as our new quarterback, since Denard Robinson left us for the Jacksonville Jaguars. But, Gardner’s performance in the last quarter of the Notre Dame game sealed our victory. He had four major touchdown passes and a victory-sealing pass to Drew Dileo. Gardner is a great passer, arguably better than Robinson ever was, with great agility and versatility. Gardner’s potential is rising with each play that he executes and will hopefully continue to rise. Our Big 10 win against Notre Dame put Michigan’s ranking to 11th on AP Top 25. But, after barely pulling out wins against Akron and UConn, we fell to the 17th spot on USA Today Sports Coaches Poll. We’ve had eight turnovers in our last two games, with five of them at the hands of Gardner. Hopefully in our homecoming game against Minnesota the Wolverines can pull out a big win. With a winning start, we can only hope our ranking will get higher as the season continues to progress. Let’s keep our finger’s crossed. Go Blue! Campus Safety: Home Fire Safety Tips Did you know there are an average of 42 candle fires reported in homes every day? • If you do use candles, be sure to display them in ceramic, glass or metal holders in a place where they won’t be easily knocked over. • Create at least a 12 inch parameter around your candles to ensure safety. • Do not to leave burning candles unattended- whether you are sleeping or leaving your home. • In case of an emergency, use a flashlight rather than candles for lighting. • Before leaving your home, be sure to check that all candles are extinguished.
