What’s Inside: Letter From the Program Assistants...1

Fan Behavior in the Big House…..……..2 New iPhone App Monitors BAC…..……3 Finally – The Night Game!..............…..3

Hello, Off-Campus Students! Welcome back to another year in Ann Arbor. Beyond the Diag is a fairly new program out of the Dean of Students Office- created by students for students. Our goal is to help connect you, the students living off campus, with campus and local resources. Many students feel that once they move off-campus their connections to the university’s resources diminish. Neighborhood Ambassadors, stationed in each off-campus living area, are available to students as a liaison between the students in off-campus housing with university and city resources. Neighborhood Ambassadors will be holding free events in each of their neighborhoods with food, freebies and more. One of our goals is to make you feel more safe and comfortable in your off-campus neighborhoods by getting to know your neighbors. Beyond the Diag publishes a monthly newsletter with articles, safety tips, and information about events to help keep you in the loop. Check out page three for an opportunity to win box seats to the Night Game. Also, look out for the new and improved off-campus housing website. Here’s to another year; it’s great to be a Michigan Wolverine! Welcome back and GO BLUE! Protect Our House: Fan Behavior at the Big House While it may seem easy to be unnoticed in a crowd of 110,000 people, remember that any one person can make or break a visitor’s perception of the University of Michigan. It is important that everyone who enters Michigan Stadium exits with a positive game-day experience. With this in mind, keep the following guidelines regarding appropriate fan behavior close to heart when you head to the Big House this fall.

1. Be a positive fan. Avoid the use of foul language, obscene gestures/messages, and threats. Don’t bring apparel and signs with profane or abusive language to the game. 2. Don’t be a bystander. If one of your friends gets carried away, use your influence to discourage their inappropriate behavior. 3. Enjoy the game without alcohol or drugs. Intoxicated guests ruin the experience for others around them and may risk removal from athletic events. 4. Keep personal belongings to yourself. Do not throw, project, or drop any object that could cause injury in the spectator or playing area. 5. Remain in the designated seating areas. Do not enter onto the playing area before, during, or after the game. 6. U-M is smoke free. Observe the no-smoking regulation in and around athletic venues. Are You in the Blue? New iPhone App Monitors BAC Did you know that a long island iced tea contains between four and five drinks and jungle juice contains up to six drinks? We’ve always heard about “staying in the blue” but there’s never been an easy way to track your alcohol intake. The new iPhone App called Stay in the Blue allows you to monitor your intake. The app not only has options ranging from jungle juice to beer, but also includes specialty drinks from local Ann Arbor bars. Some of the features of the app include easy access to cab companies based on your location and number of drinks, as well as reminders to drink water. The app is also on a timer. From the time you enter your first drink to your last, the clock continues running to create a more accurate BAC estimate. We know that BAC varies for each individual based on gender, weight, amount of food consumed, medication, etc. The Stay in the Blue app allows you to track the amount of drinks you’ve consumed throughout the course of the night while giving you an approximation of your BAC so you can be safe while still having a good time. Download this free app now in the iTunes App Store. Don’t forget to enter your uniqname in the info page for a chance to win a pair of box seats for the Notre Dame or Homecoming game! If you or a friend is in need, don’t hesitate to seek help- know the signs of an alcohol emergency. One standard drink is equivalent to 12 oz. of beer or a wine cooler or 1.5 oz. of 80 proof liquor. Some helpful tips when partying are: pace yourself- don’t rush, avoid taking shots, make sure you’ve eaten prior to alcohol consumption, and alternate between drinks and water. Party responsibly, and always remember to stay in the blue.
