Sydney Printmakers, the most long-standing and distinguished group of professional printmakers in New South Wales, has exhibited extensively throughout Australia and internationally over a period of more than fifty years. During that time, the concept of an original print as one of a limited edition of identical images created by traditional methods has extended to include a wide range of printmaking techniques such as mono prints, hand-coloured unique state prints and new technologies like inkjet and digital processes. When Sydney Printmakers held their first exhibition in 1961 the group was described as “a society of graphic artists who have come together to form a group, not because the print is a new thing but an old one, neglected. The aim was, and still is, to promote a better understanding of hand-printed images as original works of art and to exchange knowledge and experience by showing work of international standing. Sydney Printmakers work is held in public institutions including National Gallery of Australia and the Art Gallery of New South. Among its current membership of sixty are distinguished, high profile artists including Ruth Faerber, Ruth Burgess, Barbara Davidson, Michael Kempson and Rew Hanks. Several members including Anne Starling, Anthea Boesenberg, Roslyn Kean and Janet Parker Smith have received national and international awards for their printmaking. Within a philosophy of providing participation and an inclusive, dynamic resource for the public, Sydney Printmakers routinely includes an educational component in their exhibitions in the form of public workshops, floor talks and panel discussions conducted by experienced, professional group members. A full spectrum of two and three dimensional, traditional and contemporary forms of printmaking are created by Sydney Printmakers fostering an atmosphere of experimentation and enquiry for both members and audience. In acknowledgement of the heat and light so typical of Townsville's environment, and playing with the idea of moving from the shade (of Umbrella Studio) into the sunlight, the title for this exhibition is In the Shade. Members have been inspired to interpret the title in many innovative and unique ways. Visit the Sydney Printmakers website: www.sydneyprintmakers.com.au
