Bai Tapau Bai is truly an inspirational artist. The eldest of nine children, her artwork echoes the beauty of her island home Mer, Murray Island in the Torres Straits. To escape the tormenting she received from other children as a young girl she spent afternoons gazing out to sea and the nearby islands and collecting small shells to sketch on cardboard. Bai was a born a Thalidomide baby with only one finger on each arm. She explains that because of her disability life is very difficult. However, one look at her work reveals the remarkable level of artistic professionalism and unique style she has achieved. Her prints and paintings have developed into a colourful fusion of contemporary (somewhat kitsch) elements and traditional designs reflecting familiar images of wildlife and surrounding coral reefs.

Laura Castell Laura Castell is originally from Venezuela and has lived in Australia for 24 years. Originally trained as a biologist, Laura has recently become a full time artist. She works on a variety of media, with relief printmaking a strong focus in her work. The human figure and its social environment is a recurrent topic in Laura’s artwork. She sees art as an opportunity to express feelings about society and people that are difficult to display otherwise, using facial expressions and poses to create an image that attracts the viewer through its beauty and its possible meaning. She also is attracted to the beauty of nature and is inspired by the wildlife in North Queensland.
