Back to Basics Printmaking Series
Umbrella Studio will be offering a series of one day workshops facilitated by local Townsville printmakers to introduce participants to basic printmaking. No prior printmaking knowledge is required, start fresh or refresh your skills. By the end of each workshop, participants will have produced their own print(s). All materials are provided and included in the cost. There will be a maximum of 8 to 12 participants per workshop. Workshop registration and payment is required in advance of attendance. Mastering Monotype Prints
Facilitator: Jill O’Sullivan Cost: Members $75, Non Members $85 | 12 Places Available Monotype is a printmaking process which lets you quickly create unique images on different media, such as cardboard, plastic or metal plates, using water or oil based inks. You will learn how best to apply ink to your chosen medium, which paper to use for your desired effect and how to print it using a variety of printmaking presses or even without a press. Suitable both for beginners and more experienced printmakers.
What to bring: Any drawings, pictures or found object which may inspire you. Enclosed shoes must be worn at all times and bring your lunch/drink. Dr.Jill O’Sullivan holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours), Master of Creative Arts and a PhD. in Creative Arts. She has lectured and tutored at James Cook University from 2000-2010 and was an honorary curator for the JCU Art Collection from 2007-2010. Digital Printmaking & the future of Artist Books
Facilitators: Sheree Kinlyside & Sandra Wright Cost: Members $70, Non Members $80 | 8 Places Available To coincide with their Umbrella Main space exhibition Bookish, Sheree Kinlyside and Sandra Wright will hold a workshop which explores digital printmaking and the future of artist books. Participants will learn a variety of folded book techniques and make a collaborative zine. A zine is a self-published handmade, and in this workshop, hand drawn and digitally manipulated, work of original or appropriated texts and images which are usually reproduced via photocopier. There will also be a display of small book folds as well as a ‘how to’ make your own book cloth presentation. What to bring: Any drawings, pictures or found object which may inspire you. Enclosed shoes must be worn at all times and bring your lunch/drink.
Sheree Kinlyside is the owner of Red Rag Press, which is the only fully equipped letterpress, etching and bookmaking studio in North Queensland. Collaborating with other artists, poets and writers, Red Rag Press functions at its best in the printing of artists book text and imagery. Intro to the art of Linocut Printing
Facilitator: Margaret Crawford Cost: Members $75, Non Members $85 | 12 Places Available The Linocut printmaking technique uses a block of linoleum to create a relief printing surface. You will learn how to cut a design into the linoleum surface with a sharp lino tool, apply ink with a roller and print your images using a press. You will also learn how to prepare your plates and papers correctly, sign and edition your prints and experiment with different tools to achieve various effects. Also discussed will be the use of chine colle, watercolour, stencils, multi-block and reduction printing methods. What to bring: Participants can think of or bring an image to draw onto the 15x15cm lino block for carving. Enclosed shoes must be worn at all times and bring your lunch/drink.
Margaret Crawford is an artist working in printmaking and painting mostly using imagery of the local beautiful flora and fauna in the Townsville region. Margaret is a long time member of the Townsville Art Society and member of PressNorth Printmakers.

Drypoint Etching: Effective Mark Making
Facilitator: Hannah Murray Cost: Members $75, Non Members $85 | 12 Places Available Drypoint is a printmaking technique in which an image is incised or cut onto a plate, which is then inked and printed on paper. Learn this simple yet highly effective acid-free alternative to etching. You will learn the skills to draw, scratch and incise an image directly into the plate, apply ink and print your images using a printing press for a truly rewarding result. This is as direct as it gets; simple and effective mark making at its best. What to bring: Any drawings, pictures or found object which may inspire you to work on a 12.5x19cm plate. Enclosed shoes must be worn at all times and bring your lunch/drink. Hannah Murray has a Bachelor of Visual Arts from James Cook University in Queensland. Since her graduation she has held 9 solo exhibitions and is represented by Gilligan Grant Gallery in Melbourne.

Printmaking with Photopolymer Plates
Facilitators: Julia Jefferson & Sandy Heytman Cost: Members $85, Non Members $90 | 12 Places Available Photopolymer (solar) plates are a nontoxic, safe and versatile way to produce a print. The Photopolymer ultra-violet sensitive film allows you to produce prints from drawings, photographs and pictures. You will learn how to bond the photopolymer film to a plate, prepare an image and expose and develop the plate ready for printing on an etching press.
What to bring: Any drawings, pictures or photographs which may inspire you to work on a 10x15cm plate, an apron, lunch and a drink. Enclosed shoes must be worn at all times.
Julia and Sandy are two local artists that have worked collaboratively together for many years. Both have studied art and discovered a common passion for printing while at TAFE. They are both members of PressNorth Printmakers and have exhibited locally.

Collagraph Printmaking: Urban Textures & Shapes
Facilitator: Jo Lankester Cost: Members $85, Non Members $90 | 12 Places Available Carborundum Collagraph: Carborundum grits (silicon carbide, litho graining grit) are mixed with glue and applied to the surface of strawboard, perspex or plastic etching plates to produce rich tonal areas, often in a very painterly manner. The plates may also be incised, abraded, or attacked with various sharp hand and/or electric tools to create velvety linear marks, and/or combined with monotype. This plate or block is then carefully inked and printed through an etching press. You will learn how to create a collagraph plate with a variety of materials, apply ink, which paper to use and how to print it. What to bring: An A4 printout of a photo you have taken of shadows, textures and marks found in your urban surroundings. Enclosed shoes must be worn at all times and bring your lunch/drink. Jo Lankester studied at the Victorian College of the Arts, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts – Printmaking in 1994. Jo is a printmaking artist who is inspired by the natural environment. The Possibilities of Print Release Prints
Facilitator: Jill O’Sullivan Cost: Members $70, Non Members $80 | 12 Places Available This workshop teaches about the Print Release process or Print Transfer using a laser printer/ photocopier. Extended possibilities for this method will be also discussed and trialled. You will explore different surfaces that can be used to transfer your image onto and different mediums that can be used to further develop your artwork. Suitable both for beginners and more experienced printmakers. What to bring: Please bring sketches and/or photographs suitable to be photocopied A4 size or smaller. Enclosed shoes must be worn at all times and bring your lunch/drink.

Intro to the art of Woodcut Printing
Facilitator: Laura Castell Cost: Members $85, Non Members $90 | 8 Places Available In this workshop you will learn the basics of woodblock printing, from the types of wood used, the tools used and how to carve the block, to the process of inking and printing the image on paper. We will discuss the unique characteristics that woodblocks can bring to printing. The final product will be an edition of 5 prints. What to bring: Participants can think of or bring an image to draw onto the 15x20cm woodblock for carving. Enclosed shoes must be worn at all times and lunch/drink. Laura Castell is a local artist who primary concentrates on the human figure and its social environment.
