Finished when Mahler was barely 40, this masterpiece embraces themes of spirituality, wonder and the metamorphosis of the human spirit. The program also includes Dvořák’s Concert Overture and Jessie Montgomery’s Five Freedom Songs. Jessie Montgomery, in collaboration with soprano Julia Bullock (also performing in the Mahler symphony), drew from a 19th-century anthology of spirituals to create a work that articulates a powerful expression of their shared experience as Black Americans.

UMD Symphony Orchestra: Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5

MUSIC

Sat, Mar 1 • 8PM

Dekelboum Concert Hall, The Clarice FREE STUDENT TICKETS AVAILABLE

Dmitri Shostakovich’s fifth symphony came about during a time of intense political persecution. The interpretation of this piece has been hotly debated since its premiere, as many saw it as a criticism of the then dictator, thinly veiled behind exuberant adoration. While we may never know the true meaning behind the composition, one thing is for sure: Shostakovich’s orchestration and thematic development create an extraordinary piece that has continued to mystify listeners and scholars to this day. This program will feature the world premiere of EverYours by Osvaldo Golijov. Originally composed for string octet, this work is inspired by the letters from Vincent Van Gogh to his brother Theo. Fascinated by the intensity of Van Gogh’s being, his attention to color and use of “ever yours” at the end of every letter, Golijov composed a work that captured the elements of “everyourness” as he experienced them—vitality, love and attention.

Otto Nicolai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor (Die lustigen Weiber Von Windsor) is a German adaptation of Shakespeare’s beloved play, telling the story of notorious drunkard and womanizer Sir John Falstaff and his attempts to woo two married women. After receiving identical letters from Falstaff suggesting illicit affairs, Frau Fluth and Frau Reich decide to teach him a well-deserved lesson and prove their fidelity to their husbands. At the same time, the Reich’s youngest daughter must thwart her parent’s plans to marry her off.

Decorated with a rich orchestration, Nicolai’s comic opera is a tale of love and empowerment, depicting the triumph of cleverness over folly.

The UMD Symphony Orchestra presents its season finale concert, celebrating with works by three of the most influential composers of all time.

Ludwig van Beethoven’s Overture to Coriolanus was written for Heinrich Joseph von Collin’s play based on one of Shakespeare’s less frequently performed tragedies. While Shakespeare’s original work depicts the story of a Roman general’s journey from brutality to tenderness, Beethoven did not want to give too much of the plot away with a single movement. He instead stressed the overarching moods through musical themes, capturing Coriolanus’ resolve and the compassionate pleadings of his mother in sound.

Maurice Ravel’s La valse sparked much debate when it premiered. While Ravel claimed that the waltz was meant to be a composition of “hallucinatory ecstasy,” listeners heard something more sinister: a struggle between life and death. Whirling instrumentation, coupled with the signature lilt of the waltz, make this piece an adrenaline rush reminiscent of the ballrooms of old.

The program concludes with Johannes Brahms’ third symphony, a poignant and rich composition that was written in just four months. Moments of tension and release throughout the piece, coupled with an unforgettable, bittersweet third movement, make this one of the composer’s most well-loved symphonies.
