UMD will look to continue the upward trajectory built by head coach Matt Bowen entering his fourth season. Adding four wins per season each of the last two years, the Bulldogs will look to maintain that momentum and take the next step after, in 2014-15, hosting a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference playoff game at Romano Gymnasium for the first time since 2004. While Bowen sees center Brett Ervin (‘15) gone due to graduation after an NABC All-Central Region Second Team selection as UMD’s leading scorer a year ago, the team brings back plenty of offense from a squad that posted 16 wins, the most for the program since 2008-09. WHO’S BACK? Senior swing man Pierre Newton was named the Bulldogs’ Player to Watch after starting each of the final 25 games for UMD a season ago. He finished second behind Ervin, averaging 13.4 points per game while also hauling in 3.0 rebounds per outing and leads a trio of transfer players that should make up a large part of the Bulldog offense this year. Small forward Brendon Pineda averaged 11.0 points per game and 5.7 rebounds while shooting guard Taylor Lavery also averaged double digits (10.5 PPG) while shooting 41.9 percent on the season. Joining them in the senior class are a pair of big men returning from injury-riddled seasons in forward Kristofer Jackson and center Jake Harder as well as point guard Junior Coleman, who also sat out of game action with a redshirt season in 2014-15. Playing time in the post will be up for grabs between Jackson and junior Charles Benson as Harder continues to recover from a broken foot in the early weeks of this season. Sophomore point guard Kyle Schalow averaged 12.2 minutes per game a season ago, making four starts for the Bulldogs and will look to see his time on the court continue this year. He’s joined in the class by a pair of forwards who return after a redshirt season, the 6-foot-5-inch Jake Wilson and 6-foot-6-inch Lane Olson. Each looks stronger in this preseason than their freshman campaigns of 201314 or even last year’s training season. Sophmore guard Jake Larkin will sit out of action this season, training with UMD as a redshirt in his second goaround. WHO’S NEW? Four new players join the fold for Bowen’s squad, but he also has a new

man alongside him on the bench as former Bulldog player Matt Hockett takes over for Kevin Williamson as the team’s top assistant. Hockett had spent the previous six seasons as the head varsity boys basketball coach at Stoughton High School. He had been a five-year athlete for the Bulldogs, surviving as a captain during his senior campaign in 2006-07 and earning the North Central Conference Honor Athlete Award that year. “Matt’s passion for the Bulldogs is unrivaled,” said Bowen at the time of Hockett’s hiring. “His passion for UMD and our basketball program will enhance our current path to be champions in the classroom, community, and competition.” Three guards and a forward make up the first-year class for the Bulldogs. Wisconsin natives Trevor Entwisle and Cody Tomlinson are two of those guards. The 5-foot-11-inch Entwisle earned All-Fox Valley Conference honors at Neenah High School the past two seasons while Tomlinson is a local product, leading Washburn High School to the Wisconsin State Tournament and back-to-back undefeated Indian Head Conference titles. Shoreview, Minnesota native Ryan Kaczynski rounds out the guard position but at 6-foot-4-inches could play a small forward as well. He was a three-time All-Suburban East Conference selection during his prep career. Sean Burns, Jr. rounds out the incoming class, a 2015 graduate of Robbinsdale Armstrong High School averaged 15.3 points per game a season ago, while also leading the Northwest Suburban Conference with 8.5 rebounds. With a large group of upper classmen, the newcomers will be battling for playing time as the team offiically begins its 2015-16 campaign. THE SCHEDULE UMD will start its season off with a challenge as three of its first four opponents are among the teams receiving votes in the NABC Division II Coaches Top 25 poll beginning with the University of Central Missouri, hosts of a weekend crossover for teams in NCAA II Central Region. The Bulldogs will take on the Mules for the first time in program history on Friday, Nov. 13 and then face another first-time foe in East Central (Okla.) University the following afternoon. Coming home for just one non-conference game, UMD will play host to Northern Michigan in a Tuesday night tilt on Nov. 17 before heading

out on the road to face another ranked foe in Michigan Technlogical University on Nov. 19 and a perennial NCAA II Tournament contender in the University of Wisconsin-Parkside that Saturday, Nov. 21. Closing out the early nonconference slate will be an exhibition that has become an annual tradition as the Bulldogs test their might against NCAA Division I’s Green Bay Phoenix of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay on Sunday, Nov. 22. While UMD opens the NSIC campaign with three straight home games, the conclusion of the season’s first half will end a stretch of 8-of-12 on the road to start 2015. Included in that stretch of early season games is the Bulldogs’ first look at NSIC North Division favorite No. 9 Minnesota State University Moorhead on Dec. 12. UMD opens NSIC play Nov. 28, hosting St. Cloud State University on Saturday following the Thanksgiving holiday and will close out the season’s first half at SCSU on Dec. 19. The Bulldogs return to action just a few weeks later as Concordia University, St.

UMD will then dip its toes back into non-conference play one final time as the team hosts bridge rival the University of WisconsinSuperior on Wednesday, Jan. 6. After one more Saturday/Sunday series the next week at NSIC North division rivals Bemidji State University and the University of Minnesota-Crookston Jan. 9-10, the Bulldogs will return to the usual NSIC Friday/Saturday schedule and get their first look at preseason NSIC favorite and national No. 1 Augustana (S.D.) University on Jan. 16. The Vikings knocked UMD out of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament a season ago en route to NCAA II Central Region Tournament appearance. Six of the Bulldogs’ final ten regular season match-ups will be in the friendly confines of Romano Gym as they look to position themselves not only for another home playoff game but also among the top teams of the NSIC.

@CoachMattBowen

Matt bowen HEAD COACH, FOURTH SEASON

Fourth-year head coach Matt Bowen is no stranger to turning a program around, having taken a perennial Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference underdog in Bemidji State University to a championship level that has not been repeated since he left the program to take over as UMD head coach in the summer of 2012. Bowen, just the third head coach for the Bulldogs since the mid-1980’s, succeeded Gary Holquist, who stepped down in April 2012 to take the role of UMD’s Athletic Development Director. Bowen completed his turnaround of Bemidji State in his sixth and most productive year with the program, guiding the Beavers to a school record 22-9 overall mark which included an NSIC regular season championship and the program’s second NCAA II playoff berth in the team’s 91-year history. In addition to receiving votes in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II poll for the first-time ever, Bowen also produced the 2011-12 NSIC and NCAA II Player of the Year in James Ellisor. Bowen’s teams saw steady improvement at Bemidji State, with a five-win first season turning into a 12-win team in year four and the 22-win championship team in 2011-12. He’s done the same thing at UMD, taking over a team that had won as few as seven games in 2010-11 and winning eight, 12, and then 16 games in his first three seasons with the Bulldogs. Under Bowen, UMD produced its first NABC All-Region selection since 2008-09 in Brett Ervin (‘15) during the 2014-15 season as well as NABC Honors Court selection Jake Harder (‘16) that season and All-NSIC guard Jordan Reetz (‘14) the previous year. Along with an influx of young talent, the future seems bright for

the Bulldogs under Bowen’s guidance. Prior to his appointment in Bemidji, Bowen spent 15 years on the staffs of three NCAA I institutions, working under the likes of Homer Drew (Valparaiso University), Gene Bartow (University of Alabama-Birmingham) and Bob Knight (Indiana University). He served a four-year stint as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Valparaiso from 2002-06 and helped the Crusaders to two Mid-Continent Conference titles and one berth each in the NCAA (2004) and NIT (2003) tournaments. Bowen spent the previous seven years (1995-2002) in an assistant coaching role at Alabama-Birmingham, where the Blazers secured a pair of berths in the NIT tournament, one Conference USA National Division championship and one NCAA Tournament appearance. As an undergraduate, Bowen attended Indiana University and was employed for five seasons as the men’s basketball team manager. He was part of two Big Ten championship clubs and four NCAA Tournament qualifiers (including the 1992 Hoosiers, who advanced to the Final Four). A native of River Falls, Wisconsin, Bowen graduated from Indiana University in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree in health, physical education and recreation and earned a Master’s degree in health education from Alabama-Birmingham four years later. His father, Rick, was the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls from 1986-2006 and retired as that school’s athletic director in 2010. Bowen and his wife, Ashli, have two daughters - McKenzi (11) and Addison (6).

ON COACH BOWEN: BOB KNIGHT, FORMER HEAD COACH (TEXAS TECH, INDIANA, ARMY):

“Matt Bowen is a young coach with a very good basketball background. He did a tremendous job at Indiana. The people and programs he has been with since those days say he has done an outstanding job with them as well. Clearly, Matt is well prepared for this opportunity and he’s excited for the chance to coach at [UMD]. It’s a great setting for him.”

ANDY KENNEDY, HEAD COACH (UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI):

“I had the opportunity to work with Matt when we were much younger coaches at UAB and I could see first hand that he had the makings of a very good head coach. He has a great work ethic and knowledge of the game. He, like I, have been very fortunate to have been around quality teachers and program builders in Coach Knight and Gene Bartow. I am sure he’s going to bring that same approach to this situation at UMD.”

“UMD is fortunate to get a person of Matt’s character and coaching ability. He comes from a great basketball family and has had good training at UAB and Valparaiso. I can say that when he was with me at UAB he was an outstanding coach on the floor, he was incredibly knowledgeable and he had a great work ethic. I think he has an incredibly bright future in the game.”

matt hockett ASSISTANT COACH, FIRST SEASON Former Bulldog player and UMD graduate Matt Hockett joins head coach Matt Bowen’s bench as his lead assistant in the 2015-16 season. “After reviewing a very strong pool of national candidates, it became clear Matt Hockett is the person that would be the ideal assistant basketball coach for UMD,” said Coach Bowen. “Matt is someone I met early upon my arrival to UMD @CoachHockett in 2012. In observing Matt coach, it was evident he has great energy and enthusiasm for young people and the game of basketball.” Hockett comes to Duluth with a wealth of coaching experience at a variety of levels, spending the last six seasons as the head varsity boys basketball coach at Stoughton High School in Wisconsin. The Vikings won four-straight Badger Conference championships and earning the school’s first trip to the state tournament since 1939 in 2013. He also served as a physical education teacher, most recently at Stoughton H.S. “When I initially resigned from my high school coaching position, I sat down with my family [and decided] the only way I’d be able to get back into coaching would be the perfect position,” said Hockett. When the UMD position opened, his wife, Ann Hockett, “said it doesn’t get more perfect than that.”

8

Hockett spent five years on the Bulldogs, serving as the team captain during his senior season. Also that year, he earned the 2006-07 North Central Conference Honor Athlete Award as well as UMD’s E.L. “Duce” Rasmussen Scholar Athlete Award. He was twice voted the team’s most improved player and spent five years as a member of the Bulldogs Student Athlete Advisory Committee. In 2005, he was UMD’s representative at the NCAA Leadership Academy in Boston, Massachusettes. Following his Bulldog playing career, Hockett participated in a twomonth professional mission trip for Athletes in Action, spending time in Beijing, China. “Everything I’ve done since graduating from UMD has been a byproduct of what I learned there,” said Hockett. “I’m very excited to come back to a place I call home. Coach Bowen’s team has improved every year since he’s been there, and I hope to contribute in a small way as we build on the great tradition of UMD men’s basketball.” Hockett earned a bachelor of applied science from UMD, majoring in physical and health education. Along the way, he has coached boys and girls tennis, football, and strength & conditioning in addition to basketball. Matt and Ann have one son, Braxton, born earlier this year. “Matt’s passion for the Bulldogs is unrivaled,” added Bowen. “I am confident his passion for UMD and our basketball program will enhance our current path to be champions in the classroom, in competition and in the community.”

jake schalow GRADUATE ASSISTANT COACH, SECOND SEASON Head coach Matt Bowen added a former recruit from his days at Bemidji State University to his coaching staff in 2014-15. Jake Schalow, who spent his entire playing career at BSU, was recruited by Bowen out of Kaukana High School before the 2010-11 season. Schalow played in 108 games including 35 starts, putting together his most impressive season last year with 13.1 points per game while averaging over 34 minutes in 27 starts for the Beavers. In addition to joining the Bulldog coaching staff, Schalow finished his degree for teaching physical education last fall as he completed his student teaching requirement at Hermantown High School. He is now pursuing a graduate degree at UMD. Schalow’s younger brother, Kyle, is a sophomore guard for the Bulldogs.

@JakeSchalow

rick bowen VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT COACH, FOURTH SEASON Rick Bowen joined the UMD staff in 2012 after serving as the head men’s basketball coach at University of Wisconsin-River Falls from 1986-2005. He served the dual role of athletic director and basketball coach from 1995 until 2005 and assumed the full-time position as AD at the end of his coaching career until his retirement from Wisconsin-River Falls on June 21, @BowenR1 2010. Bowen came to UWRF in 1986 following five years as a Wisconsin Badger assistant coach where he served on the staff with current Badger Coach Bo Ryan. He previously was an assistant coach at Ball State University, working under Coach Steve Yoder at both institutions. Bowen currently is seventh all-time in the WIAC win column. His 259 victories at River Falls put him first all-time in Falcon victories. The 2003-04 season ended 54 years of Falcon basketball frustration when the Falcons hit the 20-win mark for the first time

since the 1950 season and brought a WIAC championship home to the campus and the city of River Falls. He earned the WIAC basketball Coach of the Year award and his peers also selected him as the NABC West Region Coach of the Year. In 2006-07 the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) awarded Bowen with the National Service Award for his contributions to Division III basketball. He is currently the NABC’s national chair of the Division III All-American Committee. For his extensive service and dedication to basketball in the state of Wisconsin, Bowen was inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Hall of Fame by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association in October 2009. Bowen graduated from Indiana University in 1966. He served the Hoosiers as a student-manager under two-time National Champion Coach Branch McCracken. Bowen earned a Masters degree from St. Francis in 1971 and served in the United States Army as a combat medic from 196769 with service in Vietnam from December of 1967 to December of 1968. For his actions in Vietnam he was awarded a Bronze Star. Rick and his wife Sandy met as students while at Indiana University. They have been married for 45 years and have two sons, Matt and Mike. Sandy is retired after teaching cell biology and botany at River Falls High School.

BULLDOGS & THE NBA The NBA took notice of two student-athletes who starred at UMD in BILL MATSON ’61 very different generations: Jay Guidinger and Bill Mattson. From Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Guidinger came to UMD in 1987 and promptly embarked on a trip toward stardom. He started all 126 games during his UMD tenure, establishing University records for points (1,953), rebounds (1,095) and blocked shots (195). Guidinger became the first individual to be named NSIC Player of the Year in three straight seasons and made his professional debut with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1992, serving as the primary backup for oft-injured Cavaliers standout Brad Daugherty. The assignment led to semi-regular playing time for Guidinger, who played two seasons in Cleveland before retiring to pursue a business career. Mattson, a master of the hook shot, was a Northern Minnesota legend who came to UMD in 1958 following a brilliant high school career at Virginia (Minn.) High School. As a freshman, Mattson led the Bulldogs in scoring with a 15.8 points-per-game average. He also led the team in scoring as a sophomore and as a senior. By the conclusion of his four-year UMD career Mattson had accumulated 1,617 points, a mark that currently stands sixth on the University’s all-time points list. Following his senior season, Mattson was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers with the 77th pick overall in the 1962 NBA Draft. Mattson is the only Bulldog to ever be drafted.
