After a 33-2 season and 20-0 mark in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference regular season play, falling only to the national finalists and returning a quartet of American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American selections including the NSIC Preseason Player of the Year in senior setter Ashley Hinsch, one might assume that the University of Minnesota Duluth’s position atop the NSIC would hardly be in question, but not so, at least according to the league Coaches’ Poll, released last week with UMD ranked third behind Concordia University, St. Paul and aforementioned NCAA II National Championship runner-up Southwest Minnesota State University. What may hold the Bulldogs back is who was lost -- the graduation of four seniors included a pair of All-American selections (UMD had six in all) including the most-decorated libero in Bulldog history in Julie Rainey (‘14), who accounted for a program-record 2,465 digs in her four-year career and 630 last season in earning the NSIC Defensive Player of the Year award for the second consecutive season. Even still, UMD returns most of their punch on offense and have plenty of reason for optimism that the team will outperform expectations. WHO’S BACK? Hinsch leads the way for the Bulldogs, both as the mosthighly regarded returner and the leader of their offense. Earning an NSIC Player of the Year and Daktronics Central Region Player of the Year honors in 2014, the setter propelled an offense that knocked down 15.32 kills per game and hit an NSIC-best .289. Hinsch, herself, collected 12.99 assists per game while also improving her defensive game with 2.21 digs per set. With all that offense to go around, the Bulldogs produced four All-Americans on the front line in 2015: senior outside hitter Mariah Scharf, senior middle blocker Monica Turner, junior middle blocker Sydnie

Mauch, and right-side hitter Maddy Siroin (‘14). Turner collected 2.76 kills per game while hitting a UMD record .383 on the year, earning her second-straight All-America citation from the AVCA, while Scharf stepped in dutifully on the left side, coming from relative obscurity (playing behind UMD’s all-time kills leader Kate Lange in 2013) to becoming an All-American First Team pick in her first year as a starter, smacking a team-high 3.92 kills per set. Mauch, who also earned her first All-America citation as an honorable mention, scored 2.59 kills per game and was the lone Bulldog to eclipse 100.0 total blocks on the season, averaging 0.87 per game though Turner was just behind her at 99.0 which brought her into the top-10 alltime at UMD in that category. The graduation of Siroin should lead to additional playing time for junior outside hitter Taylor Wissbroecker, sophomore middle blocker Allison Olley, and sophomore outside hitter Megan Norby on the front line. Defensively, the Bulldogs have a big question to answer in the preseason as to who will win the starting libero job. The prime candidates would seem to be senior Sheenagh Caroline, junior Teal Tomaszweski, and sophomore Kelly Madison. Madison appeared in all but one match for UMD during her freshman campaign, showing steady improvement defensively while primarily being used as a serving specialist for the Bulldogs. Tomaszewski appeared in 15 matches, grabbing 1.95 digs per game. Caroline brings the most experience to the table with 63 matches played and a pair of starts a season ago. She averaged a career-best 1.06 digs in 2014. Sophomore setter Sarah Heesacker rounds out the returning line-up after a season backing up Hinsch, appearing in three games during her first go-around with the Bulldogs. WHO’S NEW? the holes left to graduation with three top-level freshmen, including a pair of Chaska High School teammates in Erin Schindler and Sarah Kelly. Kelly, a 5-foot-11-inch middle blocker, was named All-Minnesota State the past two seasons and an All-Metro West Conference honoree the past three. As a senior, she was a Ms. Baden finalist, and made the MSHSL All-Tournament Team. Schindler, a 5-foot-9-inch outside hitter, broke Chaska’s program kill and dig records while earning All-Metro West Conference honors as a freshman and sophomore, an All-Minnesota Honorable Mention as a junior, and an All-State selection as a senior in addition to leading Chaska to a MSHSL tournament championship in 2014. After their junior season, Kelly and Schindler teamed up together to win an AAU National Championship, with Kelly earning the AAU Most Valuable

Player honors as well as a USA National All-Tournament Team selection. Loretto native Emily Torve, a 5-foot-8-inch setter from Heritage Christian Academy, lettered six years for the Eagles and started the last four seasons for head coach Tom Fuglestad. She earned All-Minnesota Christian Academic Association second team honors as a freshman and first team as a sophomore and junior. She also was named Academic All-State. Additionally, Torve played two years of softball as an outfielder - her father, Kent Torve, played baseball professionally in the minor league system of the Chicago White Sox, and collegiately at San Diego State University. A 2,759-seat facility opened in 1953, Romano

Gymnasium has been a welcome home to the University of Minnesota Duluth volleyball team since the inception of the program in 1971. Winning over 86 percent of all matches in the facility since 1977 (351-56 overall), the most recent era of UMD volleyball has been lethal at Romano, posting a 118-17 record in Duluth since 2003. The Bulldogs have gone undefeated at home eight times, and have won at a clip of .750 or better on their home floor in 23 of the last 27 seasons including the last 12 straight. Named in honor of the late UMD Athletic Director Ralph Romano, the gymnasium underwent a $2 million face-lift following the 1986 season. A new hardwood floor was installed in 2010, providing the Bulldogs with one of the newer playing surfaces in the NSIC. A Romano Gymnasium record volleyball crowd of 2,441 spectators came through the gates to see the Bulldogs square off with bitter rival Concordia-St. Paul in 2012. It was the largest turnout for a UMD volleyball match since a then-record 2,312 fans showed up to witness a battle between the Bulldogs and Golden Bears at Romano on Oct. 30, 2007 — a contest UMD took down in a decisive fifth set. The Bulldogs played host to the 2007 Division II North Central Regional Tournament, advancing to the regional final before falling to eventual-champion Concordia-St. Paul before a crowd of nearly 1,800 fans. • 2006-07 NCC Coach of the Year • 2004 AVCA National Coach of the Year • 13 NCAA Tournament Apppearances

The winningest coach in the history of University of Minnesota Duluth volleyball, head coach Jim Boos took the reigns of the Bulldogs in 2002 and immediately led the team to the forefront of the NCAA Division II scene. UMD has transformed into a perennial national title contender under Boos, who has taken the Bulldogs to 13 consecutive NCAA Tournaments and surpassed his predecessor, Pati Rolf, for most career coaching victories at UMD in 2013 when his Bulldogs defeated Minnesota State Mankato on Sept. 28, his 311th career win. In 2014, UMD went 20-0 in their tough NSIC schedule as they defeated 11 ranked teams on the way to a program-best winning percentage with a 33-2 overall record. Boos wasted little time making his mark on the program, moving his inaugural UMD team into the national rankings after just two weeks. The Bulldogs have been there to stay — literally. UMD has been ranked in every American Volleyball Coaches Association national poll since Sept. 2002. The Bulldogs secured their firstever No.1 in school history a month after cracking the national top 25 under Boos on Oct. 15, 2002 — a mere two months into his tenure. Since, UMD has earned the top ranking on 11 different occasions, the last in 2013. The Bulldogs would finish 29-3 in Boos’ first go-around, romping to an 18-0 mark against Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference competition as Boos laid claim to the first of his seven conference championships to date. At the end of his debut season behind the Bulldog bench, Boos was recognized by his colleagues as the 2002 NSIC Coach of the Year. Following a shift out of the NSIC at the conclusion of the 2003 season, Boos and the Bulldogs won four consecutive North Central Conference titles from 2004-07, putting together backto-back 12-0 league records in 2006 and 2007. The NCC disbanded at the conclusion of the 2007 season, when Boos was presented with an NCC Legacy Award (He’s the only UMD representative to receive the honor). After his four-year stint in the NCC, and through eight seasons of NSIC competition (UMD once again became a member of the NSIC at the start of 2008), Boos’ career conference record surpassed 100 games over .500 at 175-26 (45-3 NCC, 128-23 NSIC) including regular season co-championships in 2011 and 2012.

HEAD COACH, 14TH SEASON

• 2007 NCC Legacy Award Winner • Three-Time NSIC Coach of the Year • 2014 AVCA Region Coach of the Year

Boos made UMD history in 2004 when the Bulldogs earned their inaugural trip to the NCAA II Elite Eight. UMD would advance as far as the national semifinals before falling to eventual champion Barry University in Miami Shores, Fla. Boos was named the 2004 AVCA National Coach of the Year on the heels of a 27-5 record and deep playoff run. Two years later, the Bulldogs made a similar postseason push, again bowing out to an eventual champion (this time the University of Tampa) in the Elite Eight semifinals. UMD has been able to rely on consistently sound recruiting and talent development since Boos took charge. As a result, his players have reaped the benefits on an individual level. So far, Boos has produced two National Players of the Year in Vicky Braegelmann (’07) and Kate Lange (’13) and shelled out 20 AVCA All-Americans including four during the 2013 season. Boos officially signed on at UMD July 24, 2002, becoming the school’s fourth head volleyball coach since 1976. He succeeded Pati Rolf (1988-2001), who resigned as head coach May 10, 2002 to take over at Division I Marquette University in the same capacity. A native of Delafield, Wis., Boos earned his Bachelor’s degree in biology from Wis.–Oshkosh in 1994 and obtained a Master’s degree in educational leadership from that same institution five years later. Boos served as an assistant coach for the Titans from 1992-98, helping guide them to four NCAA III national tournaments, including a runner-up finish in 1994. While Boos was a member of the coaching staff, Wis.-Oshkosh won two Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference crowns and produced three NCAA III All-Americans, one of whom was named National Player of the Year in 1996. Three years prior to taking over at UMD, Boos was an assistant coach at North Dakota State University, where he helped the Bison to their seventh straight NCAA Division II Tournament in 2001. In his three years at NDSU, the Bison compiled an overall record of 80-21 and captured two NCC titles. In addition to coaching at UMD, Boos serves on the AVCA Board of Directors as the Division II representative. He and his wife, Jenn, live in Duluth with their two sons, Mason and Carter.

ASSISTANT COACH, 14TH SEASON

• 2012 AVCA Assistant Coach of the Year

athlete in any sport to do so, though Lange earned the distinction of finalist in 2013. Since the arrival of head coach Jim Boos in 2002, UMD has had 19 different individuals land All-American status (first team, second team, third team or honorable mention) from either the AVCA or Daktronics. With several Bulldogs snagging multiple AllAmerica nods during the same season, those 19 players have combined to bring home 39 All-America awards—including a whopping 11 selections to the AVCA’s first team. Not only has UMD compiled a staggering amount of AllAmerica honors, but the Bulldogs have placed at least one representative on a nationally recognized All-America team each of the past 12 years. Prior to 2002, Jodi Jost was the only All-American in UMD volleyball history. The Detroit Lakes, Minn., native became the first Bulldog to take home such a prestigious honor, landing a second team nod from the AVCA as a senior in 1996. A two-time All-NSIC selection, Jost ranks in UMD’s top ten in career solo blocks (57) and block assists (291). BRAEGELMANN

The UMD volleyball program continues to exceed its own standards for individual success. After a 2013 season that saw four Bulldogs receive All-American honors from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), highlighted by unanimous National Player of the Year, outside hitter Kate Lange (’15), UMD took another step forward and saw six players earn All-America recognition: setter Ashley Hinsch for the third time in her career, libero Julie Rainey and middle blocker Monica Turner for the second, and first-timers Mariah Scharf, Sydnie Mauch, and Maddy Siroin. Hinsch’s third All-America nod in three seasons with the Bulldogs marked a first since Vicky Braegelman (’07) did so in her freshman, sophomore, and junior campaigns en route to one of the most decorated careers in UMD history. Braegelman, the only four-time AVCA All-America First Team selection (2004-07) in UMD history, added a second team nod from Daktronics in 2006 and a first team selection from that same entity in 2007. As a senior in 2007, Braegelmann ripped 449 kills while hitting .367 for the year with 76 blocks en route to claiming the Honda Division II Athlete of the Year Award — the only Bulldog YEAR PLAYER TEAM 1996 Jodi Jost AVCA Second Team 2002 Becky Hoffman AVCA First Team 2002 Becky Hoffman Daktronics First Team 2003 Callie Zwettler AVCA Second Team 2003 Crystal Nucech-Duesler AVCA Honorable Mention 2004 Vicky Braegelmann AVCA First Team 2004 Callie Zwettler AVCA First Team 2004 Allison Boddy Daktronics Second Team 2004 Greta Iisakka AVCA Third Team 2004 Allison Boddy AVCA Honorable Mention 2005 Vicky Braegelmann AVCA First Team 2005 Allison Boddy AVCA Third Team 2006 Vicky Braegelmann AVCA First Team 2006 Vicky Braegelmann Daktronics Second Team 2006 Katie Gangelhoff AVCA Second Team 2006 Kari Wolford AVCA Second Team 2006 Rachel Langseth AVCA Honorable Mention 2007 Vicky Braegelmann AVCA First Team 2007 Vicky Braegelmann Daktronics First Team 2007 Kari Wolford AVCA First Team 2007 Katie Gangelhoff AVCA Second Team 2007 Sarah Wyffels AVCA Honorable Mention 2008 Katie Gangelhoff AVCA First Team 2008 Sarah Wyffels AVCA Second Team 2008 April Hansen AVCA Honorable Mention 2009 Eleena Iisakka AVCA Honorable Mention 2009 Alyssa Nelson AVCA First Team 2010 Katie Kuffel AVCA Honorable Mention 2011 Kate Lange AVCA First Team 2011 Kate Lange Daktronics Second Team 2011 Eleena Iisaaka AVCA Second Team

avca all-central region selections While UMD has been cranking out All-Americans since 1996, the Bulldogs began producing AVCA All-Region selections 10 years earlier. Shelia Browne and Rachel Howard were the first to earn AllRegion honors. Each landed a first team selection in 1986 while leading the Bulldogs to a mark of 45-19. Browne, Howard and the rest of the UMD squad ran the table (12-0) in the NSIC to claim the seventh of the Bulldogs’ 22 NSIC titles. Howard banged home 600 kills on 1,556 swings for the 1986 season. It’s safe to assume Browne, the team’s primary setter, was in on the vast majority of those kills. Browne finished the season with 897 assists and 126 total blocks. A quarter-century has come and gone since that dynamic duo got the ball rolling on UMD All-Region selections. All the Bulldogs have done over that stretch of time is come up with 34 more allregion caliber players and placed at least one individual on an all-region team in 25 of the last 27 seasons from 1987-2013. In addition, the Bulldogs have also produced a pair of fourtime all-region picks with Vicky Braegelmann (2004-07) and Katie Gangelhoff (2005-08). Hinsch, selected the Region’s Player of the Year by Daktronics, was joined by Rainey, Scharf and Turner on the Daktronics All-Region teams.
