2014 SEASON

Head coach Jim Boos returns to the helm of the defending NSIC Tournament champions for the 13th season after leading UMD to a 33-3 record and a 12th-straight berth into the NCAA Tournament. While the Bulldogs did say goodbye to the unanimous NCAA II Player of the Year in Kate Lange (’13), the team returns returns three All-Americans and finds itself ranked No. 3 in the nation by the AVCA.

WHO’S BACK? Senior libero Julie Rainey will continue to serve as the team’s emotional leader while also taking the reins as the UMD captain after capturing the title of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Libero of the Year in 2013. Rainey heads a five-member senior class, also including 2013 NSIC Second Team selection right-side hitter Maddy Siroin, as well as outside hitters Katie Ledwell and Aly Kujawa, and middle blocker Jessica Zieman. The other four will help make up the offense lost due to the graduation of Lange, who finished her four-year career as the all-time kills leader at UMD at 2,078 and accounted for 35.5 percent of the Bulldogs’ kills last season with 655. UMD also returns a pair of junior All-Americans in setter Ashley Hinsch and middle blocker Monica Turner. Hinsch, too, has found her way into the Bulldog record books and currently sits eighth all-time with 2,687 assists in her two seasons. Turner averaged 2.83 kills and 0.73 blocks per set as she asserted herself as a dominant force on the offensive and defensive end. Classmates Mariah Scharf, an outside hitter, and Sheenagh Caroline, a defensive specialist, will also contribute as top reserves in 2014. Sophomore middle blocker Sydnie Mauch returns after coming alive in the postseason, earning All-Tournament Team selections in the NSIC/U.S. Bank Postseason as well as the NCAA II Central Regional. She averaged a team-high 0.84 blocks and 2.53 kills per set. Fellow sophomores

Teal Tomaszewski and Taylor Wissbroecker return after seeing limited time in 2014.

WHO’S NEW? The Bulldogs add a pair of Minnesota natives and a Wisconsin setter to the defending NSIC Tournament Championship squad, joining redshirt freshman Allison Olley who trained with UMD last season. Kelly Madison, a libero from Edina, Minn., comes to Duluth with a bevy of accolades during her career with at Eagan High School. The Wildcats won the Minnesota State title in 2013 in part due to Madison’s defensive efforts, as she received an MSHSL All-Tournament Team selection. Madison was also a member of the prestigious Northern Lights junior club team in Burnsville, Minn. Her teams earned back-toback Sports Performance National Championship victories and she was named to the all-tournament team. Joining Madison in next year’s class is outside hitter Megan Norby, a native of Windom, Minn. Norby started each of the past five seasons for Nevis High School and head coach Heidi Wormley. She received All-Northwoods Conference honors in all five seasons with the Tigers as well as All-Minnesota State selections in her junior and senior campaigns. Green Bay, Wisconsin native Sarah Heesacker rounds out the freshman class. She joins the UMD after a pair of All-Fox River Classic Conference seasons as a setter and right-side hitter for the Hornets. Heesacker’s stepbrother, Reece Zoelle, is a senior on the Bulldog basketball team.

THE SCHEDULE UMD was a perfect 10-0 in nonconference play last year, but will have their work cut out for them in seeking a repeat of that feat. The season opens on the road with the team’s annual meeting with Northern Michigan, a team the Bulldogs defeated in straight sets at home last season. From there, the team remains in Michigan over the weekend of Sept. 5-6

to compete at the Keewenaw Classic, hosted by Michigan Tech. In addition to the host Huskies, UMD will take on Lake Superior State and the Wisconsin-Parkside, another team the Bulldogs swept during last season’s nonconference schedule. The competition gets even stiffer as the Bulldogs return to the Colorado Premier Tournament, hosted by Metro State University of Denver. UMD opens tournament play with Regis (Colo.) before taking on preseason-No. 2 Tampa and No. 4 BYU-Hawaii. UMD closes out non-conference play against the host Roadrunners. In a twist to the NSIC schedule, the Bulldogs will play five Tuesday night games, including the conference opener at St. Cloud State. Just a few days later, UMD takes on No. 7 Southwest

Minnesota State with a return match against the Mustangs in Marshall closing out the NSIC regular season. The Bulldogs take on No. 20 Wayne State (Neb.) and on the road and in Duluth. UMD will look to avenge its lone home loss of the 2013 regular season when it meets No. 21 Northern State in Aberdeen on Oct. 25. The Bulldogs will meet their fiercest rival, the defending NCAA II Tournament Champions and No. 1-ranked Concordia-St. Paul in Duluth on Oct. 11 and in St. Paul on Nov. 4. The two teams finished 2013 in a dead-lock, splitting four games against each other between the regular and postseasons.

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA DULUTH VOLLEYBALL

ROMANO GYMNASIUM A 2,759-seat facility opened in 1953, Romano Gymnasium has been a welcome home to the University of Minnesota Duluth volleyball team since the inception of the program in 1971. Winning over 86 percent of all matches in the facility since 1977 (351-56 overall), the most recent era of UMD volleyball has been lethal at Romano, posting a 118-17 record in Duluth since 2003. The Bulldogs have gone undefeated at home eight times, and have won at a clip of .750 or better on their home floor in 23 of the last 27 seasons including the last 12 straight. Named in honor of the late UMD Athletic Director Ralph Romano, the gymnasium underwent a $2 million face-lift following the 1986 season. A new hardwood floor was

installed in 2010, providing the Bulldogs with one of the newer playing surfaces in the NSIC. A Romano Gymnasium record volleyball crowd of 2,441 spectators came through the gates to see the Bulldogs square off with bitter rival Concordia-St. Paul in 2012. It was the largest turnout for a UMD volleyball match since a then-record 2,312 fans showed up to witness a battle between the Bulldogs and Golden Bears at Romano on Oct. 30, 2007 — a contest UMD took down in a decisive fifth set. The Bulldogs played host to the 2007 Division II North Central Regional Tournament, advancing to the regional final before falling to eventualchampion Concordia-St. Paul before a crowd of nearly 1,800 fans.

2014 SEASON

JIM BOOS Head Coach, 13th Season

• 2006-07 NCC Coach of the Year • 2004 AVCA Coach of the Year • 12 NCAA Tournament Apppearances

The winningest coach in the history of University of Minnesota Duluth volleyball, head coach Jim Boos took the reins of the Bulldogs in 2002 and immediately led the team to the forefront of the NCAA Division II scene. UMD has transformed into a perennial national title contender under Boos, who has taken the Bulldogs to 12 consecutive NCAA Tournaments and surpassed his predecessor, Pati Rolf, for most career coaching victories at UMD in 2013 when his Bulldogs defeated Minnesota State Mankato on Sept. 28, his 311th career win. Boos wasted little time making his mark on the program, moving his inaugural UMD team into the national rankings after just two weeks. The Bulldogs have been there to stay — literally. UMD has been ranked in every American Volleyball Coaches Association national poll since Sept. 2002. The Bulldogs secured their first-ever No.1 in school history a month after cracking the national top 25 under Boos on Oct. 15, 2002 — a mere two months into his tenure. Since, UMD has earned the top ranking on 11 different occasions, including in 2013. The Bulldogs would finish 29-3 in Boos’ first go-around, romping to an 18-0 mark against Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference competition as Boos laid claim to the first of his seven conference championships to date. At the end of his debut season behind the Bulldog bench, Boos was recognized by his colleagues as the 2002 NSIC Coach of the Year. Following a shift out of the NSIC at the conclusion of the 2003 season, Boos and the Bulldogs won four consecutive North Central Conference titles from 2004-07, putting together back-to-back 12-0 league records in 2006 and 2007. The NCC disbanded at the conclusion of the 2007 season, when Boos was presented with an NCC Legacy Award (He’s the only UMD representative to receive the honor). After his four-year stint in the NCC, and through eight seasons of NSIC competition (UMD once again became a member of the NSIC at the start of 2008), Boos’ career conference record surpassed 100 games over .500 at 175-26 (45-3 NCC, 128-23 NSIC) including regular

season co-championships in 2011 and 2012. Boos made UMD history in 2004 when the Bulldogs earned their inaugural trip to the NCAA II Elite Eight. UMD would advance as far as the national semifinals before falling to eventual champion Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida. Boos was named the 2004 AVCA National Coach of the Year on the heels of a 27-5 record and deep playoff run. Two years later, the Bulldogs made a similar postseason push, again bowing out to an eventual champion (this time the University of Tampa) in the Elite Eight semifinals. UMD has been able to rely on consistently sound recruiting and talent development since Boos took charge. As a result, his players have reaped the benefits on an individual level. So far, Boos has produced two National Players of the Year in Vicky Braegelmann (’07) and Kate Lange (’13) and shelled out 19 AVCA All-Americans including four during the 2013 season. Boos officially signed on at UMD July 24, 2002, becoming the school’s fourth head volleyball coach since 1976. He succeeded Pati Rolf (1988-2001), who resigned as head coach May 10, 2002 to take over at Division I Marquette University in the same capacity. A native of Delafield, Wisconsin, Boos earned his Bachelor’s degree in biology from Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 1994 and obtained a Master’s degree in educational leadership from that same institution five years later. Boos served as an assistant coach for the Titans from 1992-98, helping guide them to four NCAA III national tournaments, including a runner-up finish in 1994. While Boos was a member of the coaching staff, Wis.-Oshkosh won two Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference crowns and produced three NCAA III All-Americans, one of whom was named National Player of the Year in 1996. Three years prior to taking over at UMD, Boos was an assistant coach at North Dakota State University, where he helped the Bison to their seventh straight NCAA Division II Tournament in 2001. In his three years at NDSU, the Bison compiled an overall record of 80-21 and captured two NCC titles. In addition to coaching at UMD, Boos serves on the AVCA Board of Directors as the Division II representative. He and his wife, Jenn, live in Duluth with their two sons, Mason and Carter.

The UMD volleyball program set a new standard for individual success after the 2013 season when four Bulldogs received AllAmerican honors from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and Daktronics, highlighted by the unanimous National Player of the Year, outside hitter Kate Lange. Lange was joined by teammates setter Ashley Hinsch, libero Julie Rainey, and middle blocker Monica Turner. Hinsch’s second All-America nod in her two seasons with the Bulldogs marked a first since Vicky Braegelman (’07) did so in her freshman and sophomore campaigns en route to one of the most decorated careers in UMD history. Braegelman, the only four-time AVCA All-America First Team selection (2004-07) in UMD history, added a second team nod from Daktronics in 2006 and a first team selection from that same entity in 2007. As a senior in 2007, Braegelmann ripped 449 kills while hitting .367 for the year with 76 blocks en route to claiming the Honda Division II Athlete of the Year Award — the only Bulldog athlete in any sport to do so, though Lange earned the distinction of finalist in 2013. Since the arrival of head coach Jim Boos in 2002, UMD has had 19 different individuals land All-American status (first team, second team, third team or honorable mention) from either the AVCA or Daktronics. With several Bulldogs snagging multiple All-America nods during the same season, those 19 players have combined to bring home 39 AllAmerica awards—including a whopping 11 selections to the AVCA’s first team.

Not only has UMD compiled a staggering amount of All-America honors, but the Bulldogs have placed at least one representative on a nationally recognized All-America team each of the past 12 years. Prior to 2002, Jodi Jost was the only All-American in UMD volleyball history. The Detroit Lakes, Minn., native became the first Bulldog to take home such a prestigious honor, landing a second team nod from the AVCA as a senior in 1996. A two-time All-NSIC selection, Jost ranks in UMD’s top ten in career solo blocks (57) and block assists (291).
