GUEST POLICY Bringing guests to class is a great way to introduce OLLI to a potential student and you are encouraged to do so. However, you must clear the visit with the office at least 48 hours before arriving with the guest to ensure that there is space available in the class. Potential members are limited to two complimentary visits where there is space available. Children under the age of 15 are not permitted to attend. AUDITING PROCEDURES Many of our UM university professors welcome OLLI students in their classrooms. If you are just starting out with OLLI, you may want to audit only one course. However, you may be ready to audit multiple courses in one semester. Whether it is one course or four courses, auditing is a great benefit of OLLI membership. An auditor is a person who enrolls as an observer or listener only. The professor will indicate if s/he wants to include you in the classroom interaction. Auditing is permitted in most credit lecture courses only when there is space available in the class and OLLI has received written permission from the instructor and clearance from the OLLI Director. Auditing is not permitted in laboratory, creative writing, or performance courses (where audit status is not appropriate). Auditing is not permitted in Law or Medical School classes. All requests to audit must come through the OLLI office and be approved by the Director of OLLI. Send your auditing request to osher@miami.edu. You will be notified when you have received permission from the instructor and OLLI to audit the classes you requested.
Auditing for OLLI members is a privilege granted to us by the University of Miami. Abuse of this privilege by any person can jeopardize the benefit for all OLLI students. There is a flat fee for auditing each semester you decide to audit a course. CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICY - If a class is cancelled, we will notify you using your supplied contact information. - If a course is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire course fee will be refunded. - The OLLI membership fee is non-refundable. - If you cancel course registration 3 days prior to the first class meeting, you will receive a full refund on the class fee. - If you cancel within 3 days (72 hours) prior to the start date of class, a 75% refund will be issued to you. - If you cancel on or after the first day of class, you will not receive a refund. - All cancellations must be submitted in writing, either via email or letter. - Fees cannot be transferred or pro-rated. Six Sessions $45 Week 1: Absinthe, Symbol of Decadence and Artistic Allure. Romanticized and maligned in equal measure and sipped by Oscar Wilde, Baudelaire, van Gogh, Manet, Toulouse Lautrec, Picasso and many other prominent artists and writers, Absinthe, in nineteenth century France, became a symbol of decadence. It was soon a scapegoat for the social and political ills of the period, leading to its ultimate prohibition. Week 2: Carlos Cruz Diez, Color in Space and Time. Carlos Cruz-Diez came closer than any other artist of his generation to achieving two seminal objectives of postwar painting. First, he contributed to redefining the practice of painting away from the two-dimensional plane, casting it into space and time, and second, he contributed in a novel way to erasing the division between art and everyday life by means of a key element: a primal experience supported on the autonomy of color. Week 3: Caravaggio, Genius, Drama and Turbulence. Michelangelo Merisi, called Caravaggio, painted in an unorthodox manner with brilliant effects of light and shadow. His unconventional behavior forced him to flee Rome and journey to Naples, Malta and Sicily. This great seventeenth century Italian master painted with a naturalism unprecedented in his time. Despite his constant trouble with the law, he became one of the most important and influential figures of the Renaissance Week 4: The University City of Caracas, a Project for the Integration of the Arts. The University City of Caracas is an outstanding example of modern urban, architectural and artistic concepts of its time. The architectural spaces were designed by the Venezuelan architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva who chose some of the most outstanding artists of the twentieth century to participate in one of the best integrations of art and architecture. This outstanding cultural project was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000.
Week 5: Latin American Visions from the Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Collection. Widely praised for its fine collection of Latin American geometric abstract art, the Collection of Patricia Phelps de Cisneros of Caracas, Venezuela, contains the compelling work of such leading artists as Uruguayan Joaquin Torres-Garcia, Brazilians Lygia Clark and Helio Oiticica, Venezuelans Gego and Jesus Rafael Soto, and Argentinians Tomas Maldonado, Raul Lozza, and Alfredo Hlito. Through her collection, Patricia Phelps de Cisneros has provoked universities to include modern Latin American art in their curricula. Week 6: The Steins Collect. As American expatriates living in Paris, the writer Gertrude Stein, her brothers Leo and Michael, and Michael’s wife Sarah played a pivotal role in shaping the city’s vibrant cultural life during the early twentieth century. They actively promoted and collected emerging painters and sculptors, particularly their close friends Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. Along the way they developed unparalleled holdings in modernist work.
