Foreword from Director of Global Affairs and Special Advisor to Rector As Director of Global Affairs, let me welcome you to the University of Macau (UM) In September of 2014, the University of Macau moved into a new campus and entered a new era. This new era is not merely measured by its magnificent and expanded campus, not merely measured by many of its world class intellectual programs, not by its palpably warm and inviting Residential Colleges’ ambiance, not by the strong support it received, and continues to receive, from China’s Central Government, Zhuhai Prefecture and of course the Macao SAR, but also measured by the change in mindset of the staff, faculty, and of course the students associated with this university.
Prof. Da Hsuan FENG Director of Global Affairs and Special Advisor to Rector Fellow of the American Physical Society
Although geographically the UM campus expanded 20 fold, what is truly breathtaking is that the people associated with UM also have their minds expanded so significantly that they display vividly the propensity of accepting new ideas, new cultures, and new friends from all corners of the Earth. This is why UM is such an exciting place to learn and grow socially, culturally and intellectually! Let me warmly welcome you to come and explore UM, not just its campus, but the people who make this university a rising star in Asia. I think you will find that our people are generous in giving what they know, and have open minds and hearts to welcome new ideas and challenges. Happy hunting, my friends.

Founded in 1981 as the University of East Asia, the University of Macau (UM) is a leading comprehensive public university in Macao. It offers more than 130 bachelor’s, master’s, PhD, and other programmes, through its Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, Honours College, and Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences. English is the main medium of instruction at UM, with some programmes being taught in Chinese, Portuguese or Japanese. UM adopts a governance and management system in line with international standards and practices. It internationally recruits outstanding scholars to create a multilingual and multicultural learning environment. UM has an academic faculty team comprised of more than 560 scholars, and many of them hold a PhD degree awarded by renowned universities. In recent years UM has stepped up efforts in recruiting seniorlevel faculty members in an attempt to continuously enhance its teaching and research. So far it has obtained more than 20 chair professors and distinguished professors, all of whom are leaders in their respective areas of expertise.

In August 2014, UM relocated to the new campus on Hengqin island, Guangdong province. The new campus is under the jurisdiction of the Macao SAR. It covers approximately 1.09 square kilometres, is 20 times larger than the old campus, and can accommodate at least 15, 000 students. On the new campus UM implements a complete residential college (RC) system modelled upon the successful experience of top universities like Oxford, Cambridge, and Yale. Currently there are eight RCs on the new campus. Undergraduates of different majors and in different years of study are arranged to live in the same RCs, with ample opportunities to participate in various competitions and activities organised by the RCs. It is hoped that through such frequent peer interaction, students will improve their interpersonal skills, acquire self-discipline, learn self-management, and achieve well-rounded development. Our focus at UM is “Whole Person Education,” and we strive to develop our students capabilities as future leaders in China and the world. To deepen cooperation in the international arena, UM actively establishes connections with international university associations and consortia, including the UMAP (University of Mobility in Asia and the Pacific), IAU (International Association of Universities), IAUP (International Association of University Presidents), CRUP (Conselho de Reitores das Universidades Portuguesas), AULP (The Association of Portuguese Speaking Universities), and Eurasia Pacific Uninet.
