UNIVERSITY OF MARY
H A R D I N - B AY L O R OFFICE
OF THE
PRESIDENT
The university has provided a strong foundation for thousands of young people for the past 159 years. This is primarily because of God’s grace and our obedience to His calling. We will continue to be a beacon of light in a world looking for truth as long as we continue being faithful to Him and to our university mission. When I am asked to speak about what makes the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor different, I share that we offer quality higher education in a friendly, Christian environment, with highly qualified faculty and caring staff, utilizing smaller classes and personal attention. These aren’t simply my words, but they are what were described to me by the trustees who hired me, the faculty and staff with whom I have worked almost 14 years, the alumni whom I have met, the church and convention leaders who support us, and the parents who find us worthy of their trust in educating and caring for their sons and daughters. I am pleased to announce that we set an all-time record enrollment this fall with 2,706 students. Not only did we have another large freshmen class, but our retention rate also increased from 65% a year ago to 71% this year. There is a growing demand for the faithbased education offered at UMHB. Seventy-five new students had to find alternative housing off campus this fall. Therefore, the university is already preparing for continued enrollment growth, as the Board of Trustees unanimously approved the construction of three new apartment buildings, which together will provide an additional 144 beds for fall 2005. Finally, the largest construction project in the history of the university, the Mayborn Campus Center, is nearing completion! This grand $16 million, 122,500-sq.-ft. special events center will be dedicated on February 4, 2005. We hope you will make every effort to be in attendance for this exciting celebration.

This grand $16 million Mayborn Campus Center special events center will be officially dedicated at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, February 4, 2005. It includes a 2,500-seat arena, academic classrooms and offices, large amenity-filled health and wellness areas, and the indoor Barbara Chaney Swim Center. All Beds Filled as Enrollment Hits New Heights Board approves additional housing Fall enrollment at the university set another record, shattering the previous all-time enrollment figures both in total number of students and in total number of credit hours.
Future Apartments
Total enrollment numbered 2,706 students enrolled in 34,074 credit hours university-wide. These figures represent a three percent increase in both enrollment and credit hours over last year’s figures. The entering freshman class of 477 students was slightly down from 508 last fall, but an estimated 30 students did not come to school due to a lack of housing. With housing at 105 percent capacity, the Board unanimously approved the immediate construction of three apartment buildings and a “commons” facility close to Tryon. The apartments will be three stories high, with eight apartments per floor, housing two students per suite. The additional 144 beds are scheduled to be available for fall 2005. UMHB LIFE

Campus Life Psychology and Counseling Department Receives National Accreditation The Community Counseling Program recently received accreditation by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). The Community Counseling Program is part of the Graduate Psychology and Counseling Department. According to Dr. Raylene Statz, chair of the department, this is an important announcement for anyone wanting to become a Licensed Professional Counselor. “Our program follows the accepted standards of practice set forth by this national accrediting agency. This gives the public assurance that a graduate of the program is following national standards in counseling practices,” said Statz. Students who attend UMHB under this CACREP accredited counseling program can be assured that
appropriate knowledge and skills areas are included in the course of study that are necessary for entering the counseling field. CACREP accreditation is also important when a graduate seeks national counselor certification and state licensure as a professional counselor. Texas requires that a person who wants to practice counseling be licensed by the State. Students graduating from the Community Counseling Program will be qualified to counsel individuals with personal problems, career concerns or psychological disorders, as well as counsel couples and families. Graduates will be qualified to conduct psycho-educational workshops, like stress management, anger management and career development. They will have training to lead therapy groups for persons with specific types of problems like
substance abuse, eating disorders or depression. They will be trained to run a group home, administer prevention programs for at-risk teens, train volunteers for community services and respond to crises and emergency situations. “Being accredited provides a credential to the public-at-large that attests to the fact that a program has accepted and is fulfilling its commitment to educational quality.” (CACREP Accreditation Manual, 2001 Standards). According to Dr. Statz, the next step in the program is to open a counseling center on campus to provide cost-effective counseling services to the general public. “As part of our vision, a counseling center for the public will be opened on campus sometime during late 2005,” said Statz.
Convocation Address Challenges Students to Servant Leadership Dr. Marlene Zipperlen, dean of the College of Education, spoke to a full house in W. W. Walton Chapel on September 24 during the annual Convocation service. She spoke of the core values of honesty, integrity and treating others with dignity and respect, the essence of the university. “Over the 159 years of existence, the faces of the students, faculty, staff and administration may have changed, but the core values remain the same. If you accept the premise

that the process of serving activates a phenomenon where you have influence over others through modeling your thoughts, actions and feelings, then you understand servant leadership,” said Dean Zipperlen. “May the love and light of this place called the University of Mary HardinBaylor prepare you well for your journeys, bring joy to your dark nights, be a beacon through the years and illuminate your pathways all the days of your lives,” she concluded.

Broadway Spectacular Showcases Musical Talent The musical performance of Broadway Spectacular from the College of Fine Arts brought the house down with three nights of outstanding performances. This year’s show included numbers from West Side Story, Peter Pan, Cinderella, The Music Man and many other musicals. “The great thing about Broadway Spectacular is that the student director picks the very best numbers (and their favorites) from many different shows, so every act is a highlight from that particular musical,” says David Guess, Director of Choral Activities. This year’s student director was Danielle King from Woodway. Ensemble directors were Amanda Cantu, junior music education major from Rowlett; Thomas Wright, senior music education major from Georgetown; Amber Wilson, senior music education major Matt Klepac as “Mr. Cellophane.”
from Fort Worth (who also served as student director of Broadway Spectacular in 2003); Aleisha Kelly, senior music education major from Hillsboro; and Jacqueline Bush, sophomore music education major from Temple.

The new statue, which depicts Christ’s second-coming on a white stallion as described in the Book of Revelation, is in honor of all faculty, staff, students, and graduates who have served or are currently serving on the mission field.
Missionaries from 28 countries and organizations spent a week on campus for the traditional Mission Emphasis Week coordinated by the Baptist Student Ministries. They came from a variety of backgrounds and specializations. One of the most well-known in the group this year is Heather Mercer, who served in Afghanistan where she and several other missionaries were captured by the Taliban and then later released as American military forces started the war on terrorism. All of the missionaries worked with students to inform them about and encourage them to consider missions.

Nearly 300 students have been involved in recent activities for the community, including “House Cru” and “Reaching Out.” In October, students from the residence halls built playhouses for disadvantaged children as part of a new “House Cru” project. Students were also involved in the traditional “Reaching Out” to provide a day of work at various organizations such as Helping Hands, Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House and many others. Noelle Connel and Tori Glasco paint doors at Habitat for Humanity during Reaching Out.
Philanthropy Presidential Endowed Scholarship Honors Educator Dolores Kinnaird Hinton Friends and family of the late Dr. Dolores Hinton gathered at the President’s home for the unveiling of the Dolores Kinnaird Hinton Presidential Endowed Scholarship in October. The scholarship was established by her husband, Rev. James M. Hinton of Temple, and by many gifts given in her memory following her death in 2003. Mrs. Hinton was a member of Memorial Baptist Church in Temple. In February 2003, she was killed when the bus she and several church members were traveling on collided with another vehicle on Interstate 35, causing the death of seven people, five on the bus and two in the oncoming SUV. Mrs. Hinton devoted 20 years to public schools as teacher, counselor and administrator. She spent ten years as a professor of education and director of the midmanagement graduate program at the university. Hinton retired from Mary Hardin-Baylor in 1991.

Athletic Life Crusaders Earn Kudos in Fall Faceoffs
W
ith fall 2004 winding down, the athletic department had three programs ranked in the top 25 nationally. The Crusader football team was ranked as high as third in the nation before a loss to HardinSimmons. They climbed back into the top ten following that loss and received a bid to the playoffs in the NCAA Division III National Championships. The Lady Crusaders golf team won the Division III bracket in each of its four tournaments this fall. The women will enter the spring tournament season ranked second in the country in both the Coaches’ Poll and the Golfstat.com rankings. The men’s golf team also played well this fall and closed out the schedule with a team victory at the Southwestern University Fall Foursome. The Crusaders have

been ranked in the top 20 all season in the Coaches’ Poll and finished 21st in the nation in the Golstat.com rankings. The Lady Crusader soccer team narrowly missed qualifying for the American Southwest Conference Postseason Tournament. The women posted the second-best single season win total in the program’s history. Crusader men’s soccer and volleyball teams also closed the season with strong finishes. The two programs will take some momentum into the off-season as they start to prepare for the 2005 campaign. The men’s and women’s basketball teams also have high hopes for the 2004-2005 season. Both the Crusaders and Lady Crusaders were picked to finish third in the ASC West Division in the league’s annual Preseason Coaches’ Poll.

and grants. On the following pages, we gratefully acknowledge those who may be first-time contributors or who have faithfully given through the years. We are also grateful for those who have provided for the university through their wills or other methods of deferred giving. Each one listed is a partner in our success! Thank you for your continued support. Jerry G. Bawcom, Ph.D. President

“So why do you give?” Loyalty Fund — for life. In thinking about what attracted me to UMHB — it might have been the 7:1 girl-to-guy student ratio, the opportunity to play college baseball, the university’s catchy slogan of “the small university that’s big on you” or maybe the school’s location was just the right distance from my home in Midland, TX. Whatever the case, my plan was to attend UMHB for two years, and then transfer so I could graduate with a degree from a major university. However, after two years, my thinking changed. The relationships with my coach and teachers, members of the administration and students were too strong to leave. During my days at UMHB, many people invested in me, helping me to grow and mature spiritually and learn how to care about others. I can’t tell you how much I needed to be in this unique environment during these pivotal and formative years of my life. Now at 41 and saving to put my three children through college, why do I give to the Loyalty Fund each year? UMHB helped lay a foundation for my life, and I want to acknowledge my appreciation in a tangible way. And I believe it pleases God for me to give back to this Christian university that remains focused on helping to develop young people.

Students and Community Celebrate Opening of the “Daily Grind” Students, trustees, faculty, staff and members of the community gathered on September 24 to dedicate the newest student hangout on campus, the Daily Grind. The ribbon-cutting and grand opening of the university’s new coffee house was a long-awaited event. According to Dr. George Loutherback, assistant vice president for spiritual life, adding a coffee house to the university campus had been planned for several years. “The students finally have a comfortable place to come
to study and hang out after several students worked diligently to make this coffee house a reality on campus,” said Loutherback. The coffee house is located in a converted house at the corner of 8th and Pearl streets across from the BSM Cornerstone. The coffee fare includes latte, mocha latte, cappuccino, hot chocolate, all kinds of flavored coffees, Breve, American cream, smoothies and cold coffees like Frappacinos, muffins, cookies and all kinds of soft drinks.
Belton Chamber of Commerce assists with the official ribbon-cutting at the Daily Grind.
