Check

Reality

There is a lot ahead in the new year. We are faced with the challenges of an eroding healthcare, demoralizing economy and shaky foreign relations. A new year is not guaranteed to bring us all we want. The same as a Black president will not guarantee that the high hopes of a people are fulfilled. Our possibilities in life are greatly determined by our willingness to succumb to the pain, agony and difficulties in life. A great deal of us fall victim to the grand promises of others who really don’t care about our ambitions but rather their own self interests.

Shinobi Muhammad Editor-in-Chief

The reality of all things promised and hoped for, is that, it will take our own individual efforts to make things happen. No one person, no matter how smart, rich or connected can guarantee our outcome in life. The final load of responsibility for fulfilling our hopes, aspirations and endless possibilities falls on the individual who seeks to benefit. We have to believe that greatness can be accomplished and that we can do it individually for the benefit of the whole. Um...

Unavoidable... Someone is bound to rule and someone is bound to follow. Throughout the course of human existence this has and will continue to be the case. The perfection of society requires it and we who seek balance and perpetuity must come to accept it. Men will form groups and conclaves to fashion out the balance between the ruler and follower. Men will devise schemes and policies to enforce their will of idealism which carry out their objectives. Men who are neither leader nor followers will use words in a crafty manner to influence the both. In all strategy and in some cases divinity, their words will become the very thing in which inspires the will of leaders and the humbleness of followers. The contradictions of life set the tone for question and doubt, which is the dynamics required for leaders and followers to exist. The grandeur of realities is that one is not greater than the other. For the leader to succeed they must have followers. For the leader to succeed they too must submit in humility to the words of wisdom of those who came before them. Um...

It always strikes me as odd when someone doesn’t take a person seriously...after all, you never know who you’re talking to! What do real paying clients look for when booking talent? Above all else, they are looking for someone who fits the mold of the project they’re casting for. More often than not, a director or casting agent already has a pretty good idea of exactly what they are looking for. If the project requires a 5’9” brunette female, that’s what they ask me for. Joe Six-Pack:

What Does He Really Know? By Amanda Alisca Moderator: Welcome everyone to the 2008 Urban Mainstream debate live from Atlanta, GA. I am Plumas Lapis, and I will be the moderator for today’s event. Let me begin by stating that the 2008 Presidential elections have been responsible for subjecting the American public to an assortment of story book characters. Throughout the past couple of months, we have witnessed “the McCain lady,” (the misinformed elderly woman from the John McCain rally). Joe the Plumber, (a plumber who isn’t even a real licensed plumber), a hockey mom (who bears a slight resemblance to a pit bull when not wearing lipstick), and the proverbial Joe Six-Pack championed numerously by Gov. Sarah Palin. All of the individuals above have been mainstays in the public eye, except for Joe Six-Pack. Who is he? And what does he really know? Today’s discussion has been designed to enlighten us all on Joe SixPack, as well as his knowledge on a range of topics including health care, education, and foreign relations. PL: Please help me welcome today’s participants Avery Nash, a regular Joe-Six Pack from Melbourne, FL, and Desmona Sharp, Mr. Nash’s opponent from New Haven, CT. Each debater has 30 seconds o respond to each question. A coin toss has been mandated to determine the order, Mr. Nash you will go first. Good luck to both of you. PL: What is a Joe Six-Pack? Nash: Gee...a Joe Six-Pack is an everyday working class individual. Like Billy the truck driver, Jenny the bar maid, or Garth the wood chopper. We

may not talk with big words or wear fancy shoes, but we know two things; 1) we gotta work hard to take care of our families, and 2) we gotta protect America from terrorists! Sharp: The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines Joe Six-Pack as an “ordinary man or blue collar worker.” I’ll venture to say it’s someone who probably lives in a rural area, who doesn’t know much about anything relevant in society. Someone who is certainly not well versed on the topics we will be discussing tonight. PL: Well then, we’ll see about that. Based on your basic knowledge of educational legislation, what are your views on educational reform efforts in America? Nash: Hmm...I don’t know about reforms, but I don’t know about the importance of getting and education. I know that without one, children can’t attend colleges or get good paying jobs in the future. Sharp: Perhaps you should learn the importance of paying attention to various educational legislation bills; like No Child Left Behind. A bill passed in 2001 designed to give federal money t schools that passed standardized tests. On paper it sounds nice, but it doesn’t apply to schools that don’t pass the standardized tests. These are the schools that need the funding to keep their doors open. We must--PL: Sorry to interrupt you, but we must move on. How do you feel about health care? Nash: like everyone else, that it is necessary to the well being of people. It’s extremely

important to have; and it isn’t cheap. Sharp: No kidding, nearly 47 million Americans are uninsured. According to the national coalition on health care, the U.S. outspends every other nation on healthcare, yet the other nations manage to provide health care to all of their citizens. I bet Joe SixPack over there doesn’t have a plan to fix that problem. Fortunately for you all I do. If we--PL: I’m sorry Ms. Sharp you’ve ran out of time. The next question is about your opinion on U.S. Foreign relations policies, specifically with a country like Iran. Nash: Well...I’m not too familiar with Iran, or any other country I can’t see from my backyard so...I guess we should keep it simple. If we don’t bother them, they shouldn’t bother us. Quite frankly, I think it’s silly to concentrate on foreign countries so far away. We have enough problems to solve right here in America.

you. Consequently, this has turned into the opposite. Ms. Sharp you’ve been discourteous to Mr. Nash since the first question was asked. By comparison the two of you share the same basic sentiments and ideas. Furthermore, the two of you have given slightly similar responses to the questions asked. Therefore, it’s unfair for you Ms. Sharp to refer to Mr. Nash’s ideas as mindless. Just because he doesn’t possess the same oratory prowess that you Ms. Sharp pride yourself upon, doesn’t mean by any chance that Mr. Nash is less intelligent than you are. If one took away your thesaurus you would sound exactly like what you consider a Joe Six-Pack to be...mindless. I challenge you Ms. Sharp and anyone else who may read tonight’s transcript; to rid yourself of preconceived notions. They always make you seem more ignorant than the person you’re attempting to criticize. I am Plumas Lapis, and thank you for watching.

Sharp: Is he serious? It is imperative that we pay close attention to what is taking place around us. By applying a diplomatic approach to Iran, we should sit down, and speak with them, not necessarily at them. In doing so we can hopefully agree on an alternative option to their uranium enrichment program. If we stick to Nash’s mindless idea of leaving them alone, we’ll all end up--PL: I apologize. I can no longer allow this engagement to continue any further. The main objective of this discussion was to have an open unbiased dialogue amongst the two of 2008 nov URBANMAINSTREAM.com

Is President-elect Barack Obama the ‘Black JFK’?

W

ith an athletic build and a cool, collected demeanor, President-elect Obama certainly mirrors John F. Kennedy in many ways. Obama reflects Kennedy's quiet confidence, his youthful exuberance and, like Kennedy, is an exceptional orator. Barack Obama is the first African-American to capture the White House, as Kennedy was the first Irish-Catholic to win election. While both overcame prejudices facing their religion or race, neither used the issue as a basis for winning election. Speaking of Kennedy, David Greenberg of Slate Magazine noted in 2007, "he had needed to dispel their biases against Catholics simply to gain a hearing." While Obama did not single-handedly overcome prejudices against blacks (he owes much to Martin Luther King, Jr. and other black rights activists), he, like Kennedy with religion, made race almost a non-issue throughout his campaign.

his beliefs and values in the face of adversity. In much the same way that Kennedy engaged in secret talks with Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev in 1961, Obama has expressed a willingness to meet with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadineja despite invoking outrage from many critics.

W

hile drawing comparisons to Kennedy is certainly a compliment, it will not define Obama. His policies, the manner in which he handles global conflict and the way he conducts his administration will become uniquely his own. History will not remember Barack Obama as the 'Black JFK'. He will be remembered only as: President Barack Obama.

m...

U

P

erhaps the biggest similarity between the two is the issue of change. John F. Kennedy came to lead a nation in the midst of the Civil Rights Movement and growing weary of a Cold War with the Soviet Union. In his own words, Kennedy said of the American people, "they are disturbed by the present drift in our national course… they have the will and the strength to start the United States moving again." As anybody who has followed the 2008 campaign trail knows, Presidentelect Obama had based a great deal of his campaign on making changes to the U.S. economic, foreign and domestic policies. His campaign slogan was simply, 'Change'.

W

hat is certainly true of Barack Obama, however, is that throughout his campaign he has proved to the world that he is his own man; capable of thinking for himself and willing to stick to

Election Day Feedback:

By Rob Kershaw In this day and time it is time for a change, and on Nov. 4 we as Americans got that change. History was made, and Barack Obama’s has become our 44th president. In my state of South Carolina, faces sadden over the fact that Obama did not take the state. I feel that voting no matter the candidate is the best thing. I watched my friends and family wait in long lines on Election Day, and it felt so good that they did vote and used their right to make a change. It seems no matter who voted for who everyone smiled and acted as one. Then we all got hit with a reality check, Obama took the most Electoral Votes and was crown winner. During John McCain’s speech his crowd was negative towards Obama anyway you put it but when Obama stood to speak his crowd stood and listened to every word he spoke. When talking with others about what they thought about this whole election, I got mixed reactions, something that shocked me. People really gave me some negative answers towards Obama and it really made me think is this someone I could call a friend, someone speaking like this. This is history and change is here and it is time for everyone to see that it is not about race but it is about us as Americans. U

“We Voted We Made

SEPARATE PARTIES, SAME AMERICA By Stephanie Moore

Party affiliations are like zodiac signs. When someone says, “I’m a Pisces,” they mean to let you know who they are and what they are about. In the same way, an announcement that you are a conservative or liberal is an announcement about morality, religion, race, and class. However, the line between the two parties was not always so clear. Once upon a time, the Republican Party was the party of African-American liberation and the Democrats used to be Republican. The two-party system as we know it began in 1792, when Thomas Jefferson formed the Democrat-Republican Party against Alexander Hamilton, a Federalist. The battle between the Federalists and the Jeffersonians was so bitter; it left a legacy of divisiveness. The fight was so hot that Jefferson’s V.P, Aaron Burr, later shot, and killed Hamilton in a duel. The Jeffersonian Party (Democrats) is today is the one of the oldest political parties in the world. It was around to witness the 1854 formation of the anti-slavery party called the Republicans, who chose their name to invoke Jeffersonian ideals of equality. In the 1890s, the parties got their modern designations- the Republicans as pro-business and the Democrats as economic populists fighting for the poor and middle class. Evangelicals became the face of Republicanism in the seventies. Many white males defected from the Democrats in reaction to social changes of the time. The rise of mega-churches, the greater importance of the evangelical vote- all of this germinated in the sixties, when the pro-business party met conservative, tongue-talking biblical literalists.

16 URBANMAINSTREAM.com nov 2008

In thirty years, hippies and civil rights workers became mainstream political leaders; Jesus became Republican, and masses of people changed loyalties. This is the story behind this year’s election but there is more to it. The founding fathers never intended two parties to exist. Were it not for Jefferson and Hamilton squabbling, we probably wouldn’t have them. Were they bad men, Jefferson and Hamilton? Of course not. They just had opposing views. I don’t believe that John McCain is a racist or that Barak Obama hates babies. I believe that John McCain deserves honor and that Barak Obama has a brilliant mind. They are two men in love with the same country. These past few months were wasted on partisanship. We won’t admit it, but there are dedicated politicians on both sides of the aisle, making sure we live up to the ideals of a bunch of dreamers. These dreamers were the rich old white men in New England, but also they were “Mammies” (who never dreamed of Oprah), the huddled masses (who never assimilated, but contributed), and the native people of this land (who yet hold us accountable for the American promise). Forget Watergate, Monicagate, and the oiliness of Bush-Cheney politics. There are two Americas: the physical America and the one we dream about. Let’s have faith in the latter America. Thank God, two people can oppose each other in this nation without being killed. Here’s to hoping that the one who isn’t chosen can be a big man. Let us hope the best man won because that is what America deserves.

Too Conservative to SEE Okay it has happened, now what? If one were to listen to talking heads the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity you’d be led to believe the very fabric of our great nation is in jeopardy of crumbling beneath our feet. On the Wednesday edition of his weekly radio show Limbaugh while dissecting President elect Barack Obama’s victory speech, referred to the man as, bro! Limbaugh wasted little time revealing his true colors and the true content of his empty heart. Instead of admitting Republicans refusal to denounce the choice of Sara Palin as running mate for John Mc Cain contributed to Mc Cain’s down fall and eventual loss on election night, Limbaugh instead took to the air waves and immediately began to fan the flames of white resentment of all things exotic and unique. Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity represent that small minority of whites, mainly men, who cannot fathom the idea of black men as equals and certainly not superiors. Sean Hannity seems physically sicken by Obama’s victory on Tuesday November 4th 2008. I think that the time has long past for progressive Americans to ignore the fragile sensibilities of white racists and move forward into the 21st Century; if men the likes of Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh cannot understand the idea of change then that’s too damn bad.

of our country. Where the hell has this man been for the past eight years of the Bush administration? Did torture not spark fear in Mr. Hannity? What about the fact our foreign policy abroad led terrorists to become so brash that they actually brought the fight to the shores of the United States on September 11th 2001, on the watch of George W. Bush. An administration cloaked in secrecy and bent on world domination has yet to spark fear in Mr. Hannity or Mr. Limbaugh yet an Obama presidency, which at this juncture is essentially guess work, scares the life out of conservative leadership. Over the past 230 plus years our nation has been led by forty three different administrations all with a white male at the helm. During that time we have endured genocide of Native Americans, enslavement of African Americans, denial of full rights and citizenship to all minority groups at some point, lynching, Jim Crow Laws, government counter intelligence programs against its own citizens etc. yet the nation stands. I do not believe four years of Barack Obama will bring our nation closer to Armageddon than any of those previous administrations. The rational and open minded amongst us can plainly see the big picture and know that America upon electing Mr. Obama her next president appears to be living up to all the things promised by our forefathers. Any person too blind to see the big picture is not really a person worthy of intelligent dialog. U

THE YEAR POLITICS GOT XX’D OUT

by PAM MORALES-WORSHAM

The last time women in politics saw anything like this past year was probably 1984, the year Geraldine Ferraro was put on the ballot as the Democratic Vice Presidential nominee. If I hadn’t been so preoccupied with goomie bracelets and Miami Vice I would have realized this was just the beginning of us really cutting our teeth into the political beast. Unfortunately, the importance of this monumental happening would remain in Washington’s time capsule for over two decades. I think they now refer to this as the Michael Phelps syndrome, when you’re big news today and pretty much obscure the day after tomorrow. See, women for the most part have remained behind the national curtain this whole time–until 2008, that is. This is the year XX chromosomes catapulted onto center stage and announced to the world we are a force to be reckoned with. You have the brilliant Hillary Rodham

Clinton, matriarch of America’s most popular political dynasty. She ran a poorly-oiled presidential campaign and at the end of the day was defeated by a younger, black version of herself. But she sure did put up a good fight. In the face of the constant “Yes we can” chants, she stood proudly, allowing her presence and ideology to shout back “I can, too!” And though many neocons would love to claim that Governor Sarah Palin is the Republican counterpart to Senator Clinton, I politely beg to differ. I will meet them halfway, however, and say that the Vice Presidential candidate has shown some true grit since being sprung into super stardom two months ago. I would also like to remind you that Palin is mother of five, wife of one, and governor to 683,000. That’s a lot of multitasking folks, all in all while trying to land the second biggest job in the country. With a little brush up on civics and political 2008 nov URBANMAINSTREAM.com

How about the actual women that bring us our daily doses of political updates and dissection of partisan sound bites? We can’t forget them. They are also part of this XX revolution and make me feel like I too can be a part of their roundtable. Rachel Maddow, from her self-entitled show on MSNBC, is one of my favorite on-air personalities. This brilliant Rhode scholar has a smile as big as her brain, and that’s huge. Every night she serves us up a cocktail of political nouvelle (that’s French for news), shaken not stirred with pop culture. Always gracious to her guests, she blurs at times which side of the court she’s playing on. But don’t underestimate Rachel’s kindness for anything more than that. Just ask Pat Buchanan. I’ve witnessed times when she’s hatchet him to pieces with canny, factual arguments. I dare him to bring up socialism again.

She also brought the audience to their feet during last month’s New Yorker Festival when she declared she would “never go to the back of the bus again” and invited us to go forward with her. And now as I reflect on this inspiring XX phenomenon that took place in 2008, how these strong-minded women evened out the playing field in the world of politics, I think to myself, I sure am glad we burned those bras. It is not everyday that something this historic occurs. For years some African Americans had been living in the past, and not holding onto hope for change. African American men especially have been receiving the brunt of racial stereotypes. Many African American men have been living by the ideology that the only way to get out of their hardships is to sell drugs, playing a professional sport, or by becoming an entertainer. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because David’s sister Amy Sedaris is an actress and comedienne who has appeared on film, television, and stage, with her own bestselling book called I Like You. One of six children from a Greek American family, Sedaris writes about subjects like death and prejudice in a way that makes the reader both cringe and laugh aloud. By being brutally honest about his own humanity, Sedaris makes his readers feel at ease. He is known for causing inappropriate chuckles. This latest collection is less about the Sedaris family and more about Sedaris and his longtime partner, Hugh Hamrick who divide their time between France and London. It also recounts Sedaris’ attempt to quit smoking. As much as we love reading his essays, most of his readers agree that you have to hear him read his work aloud (live, preferably) to appreciate it. THE RUM DIARY

BY HUNTER S. THOMPSON

Jonathan Yardley of the Washington Post once called Hunter S. Thompson, “a genuinely unique figure in American journalism.” As descriptive as this seems to be, it does not do justice to the true brilliance that the late Thompson brought to his readers. His unique style of self-described ‘gonzo journalism’ created a stir in the literary world, even among those who considered themselves practitioners of the ‘new journalism’ of the 1960’s and 70’s. ‘The Rum Diary’, however, veers from his usual quirky, gonzo style of writing. Left unpublished until 1998, ‘The Rum Diary’ was written in the early 60’s and takes place in a changing 1950’s Puerto Rico. Following the adventures of Paul Kemp, an American journalist who has just moved to Puerto Rico to work for a local newspaper, Kemp seems to mirror Thompson in many ways, or perhaps what Thompson at that time envisioned his life would become. Kemp finds himself on a rocky road that leads him through trying times of love, hostility and, as is true of all Thompson creations, the bizarre. Renowned for his work covering the political drama of the 1960’s and 70’s, Thompson is actually best known for another novel, ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas’. While ‘The Rum Diary’ offers something a tad different than what Thompson fans are used to, it is nonetheless a truly enjoyable read that maintains a Thompson-esque persona. The book may even be made into a feature film starring the late Thompson’s personal friend, Johnny Depp. U

f a sh i o n forecasting Oscar de la RENTA SPRING 2009 NEW YORK

Oscar de la Renta show during Spring 2009 Fashion Week in New York on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008. (Fashion Wire Daily/Grant Lamos IV)

There are many designers on the rise in this industry but out of that many only a few will ever rise to the level of Oscas de la Renta. A phenomenal and ever proving genius in the industry. One of the reasons we chose to feature this icon in fashion is to give new designers a true look into what fashion is all about. So many new designers have the ego but lack the creative eye and skill to create garments that command the respect of journalist, investors, celebrities and others ho dream of wearing these fine pieces. At first glance of Oscar de la Renta’s spring 2009 collection you are awed by the craftmanship and combination of simple colors and flowing patterns. A classy, hip yet mature and sophiscated display that will capture the eye of any luxury consumer who wants to look like they truly are dressing in style. One often wonders what inspires creativity at this level and if it is any different from those early years where one was just experimenting with the idea of fashion designing. I speak to a lot of designers, some I would say, really need to just give up. What many of them fail to realize is that designing clothes is more than just having scissors, a pattern and a desire. What many of them fail to realise that in order for them to get to the level of the greats in fashion there must be an emphasis on the quality of your work. Often I inspect clothes with worn looks, poor structure, and cheap materials. Many of these designers often spending years in their trade never realize that “high fashion” or true “couture” design is about respecting the fashion examples that came before them. Honestly, attempting to create fashions with quality in mind. The best designers consider their love for the craft, their con-

sumer and the public who will see those wearing their work. It’s not just about getting paid. Um...

f a sh i o n forecasting Royal Chie Fur Design Collection, NY

2008-2009 Royal Chie Collection of fur designs in New York on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008. (Fashion Wire Daily/renata espinosa)

Renata Espinosa October 29th, 2008 @ 11:12 AM - New York Eco-friendly fur coats? It may sound like an oxymoron, but Japanese designer Chie Imai insisted it could be done with her 2008-2009 Royal Chie Collection of fur designs, which Imai and her daughter Chiaki presented on Tuesday, Oct. 28 to a group of New Yorkers that included Spike Lee and Tonya Lee Lewis, Ivanka Trump and her brother Donald Trump with his wife Vanessa and daughter Kai Madison and model Irina Pantaeva. Chie’s coats - she’s been designing fur since 1982 - combine the highest grade of chinchilla fur from Finland with a recycled fabric made from used polyester by Japanese chemical company Teijin Limited. In 2005, Teijin partnered with Patagonia to take used polyester linings of their coats to create a recycled fabric for the sporting company’s line. Chie said it marks the first time the fabric has been used to create a luxury product. “I had heard about this advanced technology, and I wanted to see it for myself,” said Imai. “Then I saw that it was something that was very interesting and new.” Imai wanted to create a luxury product that was both innovative, and something that could be worn by her customers wanting to participate in the “green” movement. She also wanted to highlight the beauty of the fabric, which is both waterproof and breathable. The end result are furs that showcase Imai’s spirit of experimentation, both aesthetically and technologically. With Teijin’s fabric, Imai opted for bold jewel tones - rich teal, crimson and mustard mixed in with fur trims and embellishments. If fur coats still seem at odds with an eco-conscious mindset, Imai points out that investment pieces like fur are passed down from generation to generation, and get plenty of use. Um...

f a sh i o n forecasting VPL Takes Flight For Spring by Renata Espinosa

November 26th, 2008 - New York (Fashion Wire Daily/Courtesy of VPL/Dan and Corina Lecca/HO)

The idea of clothing highlighting the absence of something might seem like a strange notion. After all, clothing is an additive to our natural, unadorned selves. But when that “nothing” is air, an invisible element, the way clothing interacts with the in-between spaces that surround our bodies is a highly plausible exploration for a fashion designer to undertake. Victoria Bartlett did just that with her Spring 2009 VPL collection, “Velocity,” which looks to the structure of kites and parachutes, both in the way they are affected by wind and air and the way that they use it.

There is a literal application of the concept, with pieces that float or drop away from the body, like the ballooning “harem” pants; there are also kite-like “drag tip” details on a skirt that harness wind when the body moves and graphic elements like tetrahedral-shapes on a tank top. Oversized grommets, parachute pulls that can be used to re-fashion the shape of the garment, suspension cords and canvas straps that mimic those found on a parachute pack - all the kind of industrial elements that Bartlett has used in previous collections - found their way in this collection as well, this time as a reference to flight. The feeling of air, said Bartlett in her studio in New York on Friday, Nov. 21, “is liberating, and dressing should be liberating as well.” VPL collections emphasize easy styling with made-forlayering pieces and comfort, and this collection likewise carries a message of emancipation, both in the freedom it allows to mix-and-match between the VPL collection and its

36 URBANMAINSTREAM.com nov 2008

lower-priced basics collection, VPL 2, as well as the feeling of lightness VPL’s cashmere-soft, paper-thin cotton knits impart. For her runway show this past September, Bartlett created spectacular finale pieces consisting of a signature VPL bodysuit attached to a dramatic, billowy “deployed” parachute strung with rope, worn as though it were a cape. Bartlett doesn’t usually expect to sell pieces like this one, used mainly to illustrate the fullest expression of her collection’s theme, but now that sales are in full swing, Bartlett said that buyers have been keen to purchase some of her more forward-thinking items from the runway. “It’s interesting, some of the things I did for press-only, sold,” said Bartlett, motioning to a flight-style jumpsuit, the harem pants and a tunic with a plunging back and tubular rolled short sleeves. “It’s the opposite of what you would anticipate,” continued Bartlett, commenting on the current retail market downturn, “but sometimes people just want to add more spice.” Each VPL collection also includes a range of accessories designed by different collaborators. This season, Bartlett partnered with Lizzie Fortunato, who created delicate origami paper crane necklaces and fabric collars that resembled feathers, hollowed and laquered wooden bangles by Brian Crumley, string-covered bangles by Alyssa Norton, whimsical headbands by Arden Wohl and shoes by LD Tuttle. But no air and flight-themed collection would be complete with out a take-flight bag: VPL’s latest handbags, oversized cloth bags, are light, so packing up one’s house and jetting to a new locale with all your belongings on your shoulder should pose no difficulties - but keep the masseuse’s number on file just in case. fashion PURPOSE Rihanna and Gucci Team Up for UNICEF Renata Espinosa November 20th, 2008 @ 11:35 AM - New York

“Our relationship with UNICEF is a partnership that I hold very dearly,” said Giannini. “It is an exceptional organization that is able to do so much good in the world. Dedicating a campaign to this partnership is very important to me, and I think Rihanna is perfect for this campaign. Her talent, beauty and optimism perfectly represent the positive attitude that I hope will show in the campaign, which supports a cause we both truly believe in – children.” After Giannini and Rihanna lit the holiday snowflake at Grand Army Plaza in front of the Plaza hotel on Wednesday night, Nov. 19, they headed to the Gucci flagship on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan to co-host a cocktail reception - just a little added incentive for guests, who included Becki Newton and Kelly Rutherford, to consider buying one of the items from the collection. For UNICEF, Giannini designed a special white version that combines a heart tattoo image with Gucci logos and colors. Gucci will donated 25 percent of sales of this collection, which is available online and in stores through Jan. 31, 2009, to UNICEF. “I love the idea of a heart being tattooed onto the handbags,” said Giannini. “It’s a permanent mark that you can wear with pride and that stays with you. I think that represents very well what we are doing here. This is not a one-off program, but rather an ongoing commitment to the incredible work that UNICEF is able to achieve.” Afterwards, Rihanna, dressed head-to-toe in Gucci and sporting her new Prince-like haircut, was swept away to a private dinner at the Plaza hotel where she partied with Madonna, another UNICEF supporter. While there are some people in the world who profess to hate chocolate, there’s still very little arguing with the New York Chocolate Show, now in its 11th year, and the sheer joy a show-goer gets from its feats of chocolate engineering both edible and otherwise - “otherwise” being the all-chocolate fashion show, featuring several former “Project Runway” designers, that kicked off the three-day chocolate trade show in New York on Thursday, Nov. 6. Pastry chefs and fashion designers paired up to create a “Superhero” themed collection of one-of-a-kind chocolate ensembles, showcasing some of the most elaborate and delicate uses imaginable for the beloved cocoa confection. Ironman, Barbarella, Wonder Woman and Lara Croft Tomb Raider were just some of the impressive creations. Chocolate was shaped in daring bustiers, gladiator-like skirts and fashioned into superhero capes one cape, emcee Chris Wragge of CBS evening news told the audience, featured 38 pounds of chocolate. Backstage, the scene was a chaotic and heady blend of models and pastry chefs dashing around trying to carefully apply various chocolate details to the costumes. “Put it on at the last minute,” was one assistant chef’s summary of how to keep the chocolate from melting as she applied bits of a fabric fastener to one side of a chocolate panel intended for the “Ironman” costume suit, designed by Faith Drobin and Michelle Tampakis. “Project Runway” Season 4 alum Kit Scarbo designed a chocolate costume with Knipschildt Chocolatier. Her superhero character, Black Phoenix from “X-Men,” combined wings of “fire” made from unusual items sprayed with liquid chocolate: pheasant feathers, a Christmas garland and even drinking straws. But it wasn’t easy, said Scarbo, who said working with the chocolate had been challenging. “The chocolate stuck to everything except for the silver bits,” Scarbo said. “So we had to paint the silver and then spray the chocolate over that.” In other words, don’t eat that one. Artist Laurance Rassin invented his own superhero, which he called “Bittersweet Black Widow.” “She’s killing her prey with her bittersweet chocolate,” Rassin quipped. He combined silk fabric printed with his images from his paintings with chocolate details designed by chef Jansen Chan like chopsticks in her hair and a white and dark chocolate “paillette” bikini. Post-show, guests milled about the trade show floor at Pier 94 where the Chocolate Show runs through Sunday, Nov. 9, sampling wares of top chocolatiers, including Jacques Torres, Eclat Chocolate and Green and Black. Chocolate haters - and lovers - consider yourselves warned. Um...

For all of you dedicated readers, especially those from UM’s conception, you might recall that VSG thrives to bring the truth of the business in all that is Style and Fashion while offering Up news that all Girls can use. So with so much good stuff to share some things just can’t wait and with the chill officially on and in the shadow of the fifth season of Project Runway (Bravo’s Hit reality fashion contest) results in this month’s interview is a must. The fabulous African Hottie Kotro missed the Winner circles by a mere bigger dress or a twisted ankle (absents of La Dolce Diva Jennifer Lopez) which is still a huge success. Stay hooked up, connected online and look out for UM’s up close and very personal interviews with the Winner real soon. As we segue into the winter months I want to heat you up just a bit with my Spring teaser with another Sista and Alumni of Project Runway Zulema, who talks to UM about what life is like after the cameras get turned off. After training at Parson’s School of Design, fashion designer Zulema Griffin began her career in the industry on the other side of the runway, modeling. Although she enjoyed a successful run as a Ford model, appearing in such publications as Bazaar, The Face, I.D., Essence, Interview and Paper, Zulema soon opted for life back behind the runway. One evening while working as a restaurant hostess in New York to support her modeling career, a film director took note of a dress Zulema was wearing. After discovering Zulema herself was the designer, the director offered her a job as a costume designer on the set of his film. In the years that followed Zulema worked on multiple films, costuming talent such as Adrian Grenier, Rhea Perlman, Barbara Hershey, Emily Deschanel, and Douglas Smith. Zulema yearned for more, however, and decided to take her fashion background a step further into the world of design. In May 2006 Zulema presented her first fashion show, the Matador-themed Pre-Spring ‘07 Collection, at Brooklyn Fashion Week. Met by rave reviews, Zulema followed up with a strong showing of her Spring 07’ Collection during New York Fashion Week in September 2006. Since then Zulema has continued to show standout collections during each New York Fashion Week, landing her press mentions in media outlets like 46 URBANMAINSTREAM.com nov 2008

Americans' Food Stamp Use Nears All-Time High!!! By Jane Black - November 26, 2008 - The Washington Post

Fueled by rising unemployment and food prices, the number of Americans on food stamps is poised to exceed 30 million for the first time this month, surpassing the historic high set in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina. The figures will put the spotlight on hunger when Congress begins deliberations on a new economic stimulus package, said legislators and anti-hunger advocates, predicting that any stimulus bill will include a boost in food stamp benefits. Advocates are also optimistic that President-elect Barack Obama, who made campaign promises to end childhood hunger and whose mother once briefly received food stamps, will make the issue a priority next year. “We soon will have the most food stamps recipients in the history of our country,” said Jim Weill, president of the Food Research and Action Center, a D.C.-based anti-hunger policy organization. “If the economic forecasts come true, we’re likely to see the most hunger that we’ve seen since the 1981 recession and maybe since the 1960s, when these programs were established.” The Agriculture Department is set to release the new numbers as early as this week. Agency officials declined to confirm the figures but outlined them in a briefing last month for advocates and administrators of state food stamp programs. Breaking the symbolically important 30 million mark comes on the heels of government data showing that 11.9 million people went hungry in the United States at some point last year. That included nearly 700,000 children, up more than 50 percent from the year before. Food pantries and other charitable organizations are also reporting an increase in demand from those in need. Visits to local pantries are up by 20 to 100 percent over the past six months, and calls to the Capital Area Food Bank’s hunger hotline have jumped 248 percent. Most are from people who have never used food stamps or a pantry before, said Lynn Brantley, the organization’s president and chief executive. Analysts attribute the jump primarily to rising unemployment, which hit 6.5 percent in October and is predicted to increase to 8 percent by the end of 2009, but rising food costs are also a factor. Although prices have fallen from the levels of this past spring, they remain high. In October, the consumer price index for food and beverages had jumped 6.1 percent over last year. Staples such as eggs and bread rose even faster.

For low-income families, who spend a higher percentage of their monthly budget on food, that rise has been particularly painful. Food stamp benefits are adjusted for inflation only once a year, and as of September, the maximum benefit fell $64 a month short of the cost of the thriftiest, USDA-established diet for a family of four. The annual adjustment in October of 8.5 percent largely brought the benefit in line with food costs again, but the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a nonpartisan policy group, estimates that if current inflation persists, by December benefits will again fail to match the cost of the thrifty food plan. “At a time when we have more people turning to the food stamp program, it is less and less able to meet their basic food needs,” said Stacy Dean, the research center’s director of food assistance policy. To qualify for the food stamp program, whose name was officially changed last month to the Simplified Nutrition Assistance Program, recipients must have an income below 130 percent of the federal poverty level, or less than $27,564 for a family of four. The benefits, which average $109.93 a month per person, are based on a plan set by the government to represent a low-cost but nutritionally adequate diet. Participants apply locally to receive an electronic card that is used like an ATM card to buy food at most grocery stores and some farmers markets. The maximum benefit for a household of four is $588 a month. At the Department of Human Services on H Street NE yesterday, the benefits office was busy. D.C. resident Harry Washington, 54, had come to apply for food stamps after losing his job at a Dupont Circle restaurant that closed for renovations last month. Over the past three years, he has received food stamps several times to tide him over between jobs. “This all has been going on awhile. It just depends where you are on the totem pole whether or not you have felt it,” Washington said. Jaqueline Hawkins was also there to sign up. The 47-year-old broke her hip last November, forcing her to leave her job at a Whole Foods Market. Hawkins received short-term disability, then unemployment benefits. Both have run out. “I came for food stamps because my other options have expired,” she said. Hawkins plans to begin looking for work after Jan. 1. Benefit applications are up around the Washington area. In the District, the number of applicants in October was 7.5 percent higher than last year’s. In

Arlington County, the average number of food stamp applications in the past six months is up 17 percent over applications during the same period last year. At the Arlington Food Assistance Center, meanwhile, the number of clients has jumped by 25 to 35 percent over last year, said Executive Director Christine Lucas. Lines for food, sometimes with as many as 95 people, begin forming around 7:30 a.m., even though the food pantry does not open until 10. On a recent morning, one of the early arrivers was Alvaro Ascencio. The 45-year-old, who lost his construction job after 12 years, was hopeful he would find work soon and had turned to the pantry as a stopgap. “If I didn’t know about this, I wouldn’t know what to do,” Ascencio said through an interpreter. To tackle the problem, supportive lawmakers are pressing to include a temporary bump in food stamp benefits in the next stimulus package. Similar proposals failed to pass twice this year, but there appears to be broad support now for an increase of 10 to 20 percent, advocates and lawmakers said. Economists say an increase in food stamp benefits would help the economy overall by concentrating relief on those most likely to spend the money quickly, pumping dollars into an economy desperate for demand. According to Mark Zandi, chief economist of the rating agency Moody’s Economy.com, every $1 spent on food stamp benefits generates $1.73 of economic activity, more than extending unemployment benefits or offering state fiscal relief. “Congress has been focusing on the impact on the financial markets,” said Dean at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. “We want them to focus on the supermarkets and help 30 million people.” In 2009, the new Congress will also have to deal with renewing the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act, which includes school breakfast and lunch programs and the Women, Infants and Children program that provides money for specific foods such as milk and infant formula. The act is due to expire in September 2009, and Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), who chairs the Agriculture Committee, has long been keen to expand eligibility and strengthen mandates for nutritious food in these government-funded programs.

Tkandy it would be a good idea for someone like you, with your size, to work on your posing. Even full figured women, like your self, should know when to “suck in” appropriately for the shot. It’s distasteful. It is not necessary, to charge a $200 fee when you’re posing is not up to par. It would be advisable for you to take modeling and posing classes. Also remember, before posting any professional pictures on any website with the intentions of looking for paid assignments, make sure that your photos are retouched and within professional standards.

Scheduled an appointment with a photographer and was a “No show”. When Janelle was called, she rescheduled her appointment for later in the afternoon and confirmed that the appointment would be a good time for her. When called later to confirm how far Janelle was from the photo shoot, Janelle had an excuse to why she wasn’t on her way. It is never okay to stand up a photographer. Especially one that is willing to help your much needed portfolio. Janelle, apparently, you are very new to the game and standing up people that are trying to help you further your career is never a good idea.

No fashion, no fitness, no beauty just booty. After showing your tail on the internet for some time, that’s all people want to see from you. The fashion industry has an image that they prefer to work with and any women showing their tail on the internet are usually “damaged goods”. Having skimpy underwear on and passing it off as implied, is just the same as being naked. You have a nice body but that body has a fine line between sexy and sleazy. Figure out what you really want or someone else will decide for you.

Keyana, you have an agent but yet your agent finds it okay for you to expose your privates over the internet for perverse people to look at for free. How smart is that agent or how much does he know? If he knew any better, he would save the goodies for a paid site. As the saying goes “why buy the cow, when you can get the milk is free”.

KittyKat ID:9800 blackcuties.com

KittyKat, although you are a very attractive woman, you are misrepresenting yourself. Besides choosing to represent yourself with a name like a porn star, for a woman that is interested in doing fashion, print, glamour, runway, swimwear and no nudes; your portfolio says only one thing. You choose to show your half covered tail in every photo. People in the fashion industry do not hire women because they have a nice tail. You are hired on what you can do. You’re not showing what you have to offer; maybe, that’s exactly what you’re doing. You need versatility in your portfolio or figure out what you want to do because your pictures say that you are more interested in being a booty model.

LSha, is guilty of scheduling an appointment for a big shoot, confirming around 7pm, the night before and not showing up for the shoot the next morning at 10am. The make-up artist is an important aspect in a shoot. LSha, you can’t be trusted for any future events because you have become very unreliable. Your commitment to your job should be just as important as the work you put into it. It doesn’t matter how beautiful your work looks on a website, if you can’t commit your time and effort to future events then your work means nothing and will be nothing.

Your work is great and the photography is beautiful but don’t be afraid to express yourself. You’re too safe. Your portfolio says that you are creative but all it shows is simple and basic. Being in the safe zone never got anyone very far. If you prefer to stay in the safe zone, it is best that you stick with proms and weddings. Although your photos are beautiful you may have plenty more to learn if you are too afraid to step outside the box.

The Powda Room MM# 873834 ModelMayhem.com

The Powda Room, 11 years of experience and none if it shows in your portfolio. Your work has shown to be very plain and not even average for a MUA. Your years of work do not show and many of the models appear to not have on any make-up at all. The purpose of posting a portfolio of your work was to draw customer’s attention when in reality; many models wouldn’t allow you to do their make-up for free without risking their reputation. Your portfolio is your resume and if this is the best you have, you may have to evaluate your 11 years experience.

The difference between everyday make-up wear and makeup done by a professional is that the professional pays more attention to detail. Without this, there would be no need for people like your self. This is why we call your profession “Make-up Artist” and not “Make-up doer”. Anyone can do make-up, but when you can turn your work into an art, than it becomes more than just a task. Take the time to express yourself and your skill more. The face is your canvas. Learn how to use it.

E P, your photos are ok but the trouble that many make-up artist have is that, your work is not being shown very well due to lighting or simply just not applying enough make-up. As a MUA, you should be experienced enough to know how to apply make-up correctly for a professional shoot. Your makeup seems boring and you are not expressing yourself. Either your portfolio needs a change or you may need a few more classes.

The Traveling Stylist MM#878251 ModelMayhem.com

Mary Lou, when working with photographers you have to take into consideration the work that is about to be done and how you as a hairstylist benefit from it. Although your work looks beautiful, it’s barely visible. How would someone know to hire you if they can’t see the work in your portfolio? When doing TF’s or any photo shoots, it would be within your best interest to review the concept of the shoot with the photographer before going forward because when you don’t, it’s just a waste of time.

KANAKO, the same model, same hair texture, and most of the same styles does not help your portfolio at all. In fact, I thought it was the model’s portfolio! I see more of the model than the hairstyling work. Your portfolio made me very interested in the model and the photographer and less interested in you. It’s all about presentation and versatility. You need to have both in order to make your work pop! Next time you shoot with a photographer, make sure he has at least a little interest in showing your work instead of making another portfolio for Geisha.

photographers mwh Photograghy MM# 761760 ModelMayhem.com

MWH, your photography work has shown to be poorly done. This is because models are badly posed, with too much light exposed on some photographs and not enough exposed on others. A photographer should have some idea of what a good pose should look like, in your portfolio it appears no one had a clue. Also do you know how to touch-up a photograph? Models are being negatively represented in your photographs. The work done in your portfolio appears as if an amateur had taken them. It would be greatly appreciated if you worked on your photography skills better or just put down the camera.

52 URBANMAINSTREAM.com nov 2008

Sweetp Hair, when entering in the entertainment industry as a hairstylist, it is imperative that you show versatility or else this will be a downfall. It’s understood that the photos of your models may not be the best due to the fact that you are new to the industry but the goal is to intrigue the audience that you are attempting to work with and limit yourself to one race or ethnicity.

Traveling Stylist, your work is beautiful but it is a shame that the models are in the dark and the styles are barely visible. How is this benefiting you? When working with photographers, take into consideration how his/her work can add to your portfolio. Ask the photographer to also take headshots of the models. This would help your portfolio and not just theirs

Donald E. Photography MM#506223 ModelMayhem.com

Donald, as a photographer, your work looks so amateur. The photography of the women looks so sub-par. The posing, styling, hair, and makeup of the models are ridiculously low budget. Many of these women believe they are so close to making it as a model because some photographers fill their heads with high hopes. In most cases it is always “Guys with Cameras” who just take pictures for sport and play while showing themselves off as knowledgeable professionals. It would be wise to learn from other experienced photographers. Your current presentation shows you need advice and better instructions on how to be a more skillful practitioner of photography.

ON BLAST YA HEARD By: ROUGE STYLIST

Welcome to my first article ONBLAST! Ya Heard, there will be some frankness and truth thrown around like monkey in sh*t so hold on tight and prepare yourself for the honest criticism. To all the infamous photographers who think they are the beginning and the end of the creative world, stop asking for the other three people for whom you collaborate (hair, make-up, and fashion stylist) to work 8 hours for free and to be grateful for the untouched images you send to their email. At least provide two meals and coffee, especially if you want the fashion stylist to do their job and the make-up artist to bring lashes and the hairdresser to bring a wig. We invest so should you and yes time is money but their time is worth the same amount as yours. Without the other Creatives involved you don’t have the polished image you are seeking. Also like everyone else on the team please make sure that you are current with your shooting schedule (especially if you say you’re a fashion photographer) there are 2 seasons, in the world of fashion 2 main seasons Spring /Summer and Fall/ Winter. If you shoot enough you will know when to shoot what. Be honest with the other creatives, if it is a test say that don’t tell them it’s a submission and you don’t put the energy in to submit it, or it’s not good enough to submit. Honesty is always best. If the make-up, hair, and fashion are not up to par then tell them to leave. Push for excellence. When doing a test shoot, it is not mandatory to have a fashion stylist to pull or buy clothes and accessories for the shoot. A test is to do just that test the models ability to perform as well as the cohesiveness of the team to create either a story or selective shots and looks that would benefit everyone involved. Now I can go on and on about the character defects of some if not most of the photographers. Nevertheless, let’s not just focus on the photographer, (as I said before it’s not just about them). Let’s talk about the models, too. Although I am not a fan of ANTM (America’s Next Top Model) you could educate yourself about some things about the industry. Tyra teaches you to trust your instincts, and to wear a thong, or g-string in the colors of nude or black. Carry your shoes when you are testing and for castings as well. A nude bra or a black bra will do fine, nothing witty or cute. Manicures and pedicures should be clean nothing fancy this is not the prom or the mall. Know your job, when you hear the camera click, move and pose, and follow the directions of the photographer and team on hand to make the shoot work. It’s not about you it’s about what is created for you, so your opinion does not matter. Please allow for everyone to do their job and when you need to become self sufficient then step up, like Tyra says one should always be prepared to know each job so when necessary you can apply your own make-up and do your own hair. Please understand there are more than just high-end models, there are commercial models, hair models, hand models, and foot models. Not everyone can walk the runway, you have to be at least 5’9 and 110 pounds 34 bust and a 28 waist. Swimsuit models are similar, but in this new wave of Victoria Secrets, and thanks to Tyra Banks you can be a 36 D with some bootie. A model should read magazines, practice poses, and know how to show the garment or the prop that is given to you. Do not worry ladies and gentlemen next issue we will discuss Fashion Styling Make –up and Hair. I am going to put them OnBlast! as well. Let’s Create and make great images. Put 100% into your craft, understand, and respect others’ creative process. Maintain your commitment; do not fail your team. Without one another, there is no complete team. Um...

Ask My Angels

ask my angels

My Angels Hey Angels! What can I do if some nude pictures I took but later regretted were put up by a photographer. Keep in mind I never signed a model release. Sally Walker North Carolina MA’s: First and foremost you should never take pictures that you may later feel you’ll regret taking. Now, as you may not know, a photographer can take a picture and put it in his/her portfolio for demonstration of work. However, they cannot sell or trade out your images without a release. Now, if an editorial piece is being done on the photographer, then, the images can be used. You have to remember that once images are taken by a professional photographer it automatically becomes their property and copyright is theirs. A model release can offer shared rights, limited use, or an array of things. In your case, you can possibly sue if the images are used in any commercial and or marketing manner, especially if you don’t have a model release. But, again if it is for their portfolio then you have little or no recourse. You can always offer to buy the negatives or originals and then have paperwork to give all rights to you while preventing the photographer from using images.

Hey Angels, What should I have in my portfolio to be successful? Cory-Anne, Los Angeles, Ca. MA’s: It really depends on the market you are trying to focus. You definitely need a clean untouched up head shot. Your head shot should not have displays of jewelry, loud makeup, or hair in your face which would block your facial features. A head shot should be clear with a solid background, preferably, a white one. However, black can be used. Some people nowadays have found using head shots with simple surroundings can work. A head shot is typically just that, a head shot which could include top shoulders and head. But, many well established photographers are including the waiste to head area of the body as part of the head shots. Now inclusive of this for your portfolio, you should have a full body, straight on shot. Technically, a head shot, waiste to head and full body are typically what’s needed. The simpler the better. Depending on casting call requirements a full body shot may include a full frontal, side and back shot ith more fitting clothes or a swimsuit. So, in all actuality it is best to have a simple portfolio for casting calls and then another which shows off your posing, personality and model experience.

Thinkaboutit

FemaleSexuality in the Workplace:

Celebutantes, Politicians, and Everyday Women In late September 2008, British newspaper The Telegraph reported that legendary Playboy mogul Hugh Hefner considers himself to be a women’s advocate: “Because, obviously, the major beneficiary of sexual freedom is women. It's women who historically, for centuries, were chattels.”1 Nonetheless, many feminists would argue, such is the logic against pornography. Porn, has successfully launched several women’s careers outside the realm of the sex industry—the most notable being Paris Hilton. Paris Hilton’s sex tape hit the internet (and later stores), despite her fruitless attempt to prevent its sale. 1 Night in Paris debuted one week prior to the airing of The Simple Life—effectively thrusting Hilton into national spotlight beyond the familiar New York gossip circles, and enabling her to create an empire out of her name.

Kim Kardashian, friend of Paris and recent sex tape

star, experienced a similar rise to fame. However, says Kardashian of the sex tape, “I’m not poor, I’m not desperate, I would never try to sell a sex tape. It would humiliate me and my family. [sic]” 2 Nowadays, she is the co-owner of two fashion stores and is a model with more visibility than before. Neither Kardashian nor Hilton authorized the tapes, saw any direct profit from them, or condone their release. Often, sex tapes starring male celebrities merely pervert the male’s reputation, rather than sexualize him. Male tapes that garner attention comparable to the aforementioned usually involve some degree of fetish or scandal. Paris Hilton engaged in consensual, adult sex, whereas R. Kelly’s cohorts with a minor (and the most infamous golden shower on video of all time) resulted in mockery, pedophilia branding, and a court trial. Modern business attire increasingly allows for women to combine sexuality with success. For instance, much of Sex and the City was wrought with Manolo Blahnik, and Vera Wang-type references for the fiercely successful (but decidedly not middle-class) four-some. Sarah Palin has recently come under attack for her extravagant wardrobe and lavish styling services (her make-up artist is the highest paid member of the McCain campaign). Palin and others argue that such alleged extremes are necessary, and, furthermore, that criticism stems from sexism3. In essence, many would argue, successful women are expected to be attractive—and are, in a bewildering double

standard, intellectually undermined when they manage to be both pretty and successful. Although expressing oneself sexually can ultimately be empowering, the danger lies in equating female sexuality with success. Especially problematic is the severe threat of sexual harassment in the workplace—something that many women endure, overcome, and lament. Although men can and occasionally do suffer from sexual harassment in the workforce, the majority of cases brought to suit are by women. In Meritor Savings Bank v. Vinson (1986), the Court deemed a victim’s dress and behavior admissible evidence at trial if the defendant wishes to argue his advances were welcome. Additionally, the Court found that the business must have notification of the harassment in order to induce liability on their behalf—although this was to be applied on a case-by-case basis4. Legal attempts to protect women from sexual harassment can chiefly conflict with de facto workplace standards of beauty. Celebrities, politicians, and blue-collar workers alike often benefit—sometimes against their wishes, preferences or consent—from sexual exploitation. Feminist theorists may cite the male gaze as one of the principal reasons women’s achievements are frequently saturated with sexuality. Although usually applied to film and media critique, the everlasting presence of the male gaze is part of our daily lives. As Wykes and Gunter stated, “… images… reassure men of their sexual power and at the same moment deny any sexuality of women other than the male construction.”5 Sexual harassment, then, is habitually in exercise in maintaining the sexual status quo in which men are in control, possess the chief elements of power, and subordinate women aim to please them. Although in many ways a gross over-generalization, it is indubitably important to analyze the influence of male power to women achieving success—and how sexuality often plays a key role in launching or, in cases of refusal, annihilating her career. However, it is just as imperative that women own their sexuality, and are able to express it with free agency. The fine line, then, becomes choice. If nudity and sexual expression are free of coercion (including an absence of choice) then sexuality and success can become vestiges of empowerment for women.

Christine Szeredy PHOTOGRAPHER PROFILE

What got you started in the business? ( tell us about you) My first memory of photography was when my dad gave me a Polaroid camera when I was seven. At first it was more about the fact that I hated having my pictures taken. So, I started to take pictures like crazy, but then I began to really enjoy it. Over the years, I got more and more into it; after art school, it became my profession. What are the most motivating items in photography? For me, the most motivating facet in photography are the people that I work with. I always have fun while working. I know it is a job, but it also is a passion, so I want everybody to have fun and enjoy their time; I believe that happy people photograph better. I think that positive energy reflects in a picture. Describe the types of models and subjects you like to shoot? I am not a landscape photographer. I like to work with people. I do enjoy advertising and shooting stilllife, but my favorite subjects are human beings. What makes for a strong model portfolio? I've heard a lot of different opinions about this, but most people agree that a cohesive body of work is the key to success. I've deteremined that showing different angles earns me more jobs. I really don't know the right or wrong answer to this; I guess it's trial and error. Advice to new photographers in the game? Shoot, shoot, shoot, and shoot as much you possibly can. The more you shoot, the more experienced you become. If you don't have a job or assignment- create one! I used to try to shoot every single day when I first started. Also, don't be afraid to try new things such as different light positions, angles, and so on. You will find that sometimes it works and sometimes it just doesn't, but there is always something new to learn. It also keeps your mind fresh and creative. Set time aside for personal projects and look towards other peoples; work for inspiration. Collect pictures you like and figure out why you like them or why you don't like them. It helped me to improve my own style. What are some of your photography strong points? I think my strongest point in my photography is the personal connection with the model. What new projects do you have coming up in 2009? 2009: There a couple of events, some fashion shows. I am still working on projects from 2008- there has been so much going on this year. Why do you think we chose you to be featured in UM magazine? I am not sure, but I certainly do appreciate it! What are some issues in dealing with models and other service providers ( muas, hairstylists and or designers)? I generally never have had any problems; there are people with whom I have a better connection than others. I believe this is mostly because it is easier for me to connect with them then others. Working with people requires patience and accepting them for who they are. When you can accomplish those simple tasks it becomes fun. Are there any points or things you wanted to cover in your interview (i.e. politics, business, entertainment etc)? I really like being my own boss. It is scary at times, but very rewarding. A big part of my job is re-touching images and sitting in front of the computer, which I enjoy as well as the shooting part. Um...

yeng moua/ YM Dezigns PHOTOGRAPHER PROFILE

What got you started in the business? (tell us about you) Unlike some people, I didn’t know that I wanted to become a photographer until seven years ago. I was always interested in art and fashion design but never thought about photography. I pursued a career in Graphic Design and graduated in 2001. A basic photography class was required for that particular degree. When I took that class, I realized how much I love photography, to be able to capture a beautiful image. I love shooting people. When I shoot landscapes as a class project, I would always imagine a person in the photo somewhere. After obtaining a degree in Advertising and Graphic Design, I was doing some freelance work as a Graphic Designer until I found a job at Herff Jones as a Graphic Artist designing yearbook covers. At Herff Jones, I also worked in different department preflighting, doing corrections and page makeup. Basically, checking everything before it goes to print. With this knowledge of print production, I decided to start a Hmong magazine called “Hmong Is You”, grammatically worded wrong to make fun of my nationality in a harmless way. The magazine helps promote Hmong talents across the United States. Graphic design, photography, and pint knowledge was a great combination to start a magazine. For more information go to www.myspace.com/hmongisu. I am currently working on the fifth issue. I do most of the photography in the magazine and the others are submitted by photographers all over the United States. I am married and a full time mother of a one year old, 12 year old, and 16 year old. I shoot weddings, modeling portfolios, headshots, couples, and families. What are the most motivating items in photography? The beauty of the outcome, to be able to produce an amazing image. Describe the types of models and subjects you like to shoot? I like to shoot models who need little direction in a high fashion shoot. I think it’s important as a model to be able to pose, know their good side and what angles work for them. It makes the whole shoot flow and be more productive. It gets frustrating when I have to tell a model how to pose in every frame. To get a great picture, it takes a whole team, the photographer, model, stylist, hair stylist, and makeup artist. What makes for a strong model portfolio? A strong portfolio to me is being versatile. A model should have different looks to attract different clients. The photos should be done by a professional photographer. It’s worth it to get your photos done professionally. Pick your strongest photos to be in your portfolio and don’t over retouch your photos because it would be false advertising to the clients. What they see is what they should get. Advice to new photographers in the game? Learn as much as you can, research and practice makes perfect. If you’re a digital photographer, Photoshop is a must. Adjusting light, contrast, hue, and retouching in Photoshop can turn a good photo to a great photo. What are some of your photography strong points? Great lighting makes a world of a difference in photography. Over the years, I’ve learned to work with lighting in different and difficult situations. new projects do you have coming up in 2009? I would like to convert into a couture, high fashion photographer so models who are looking for high fashion photos for their portfolio should contact me about this at yeng_moua@yahoo.com, myspace.com/ymdezign or www.modelmayhem.com/ ymdezign Why do you think we chose you to be featured in UM magazine? Every photographer has a different style. Mine is vibrant and creative. I love shooting funky, bright colored photos.

66 URBANMAINSTREAM.com NOV 2008

What are some issues in dealing with models and other service providers ( muas, hairstylists and or designers)? One of the issues with some of the models is they come unprepared. Sometimes, they show up with wrinkled clothes, no shoes or accessories. I always buy accesories and sometimes clothes just in case to get unique looks. How do you define yourself? Genuine, honest, and trustworthy. My word is bond. I treat other people how I want to be treated.

Why did you decide to be featured in Urban Mainstream magazine? I’m ready to expand my horizon and network with other people. Everything I’ve done up to now has been through word of mouth so I think this is a good chance for people to get to know me better.

Behind the Scenes on the Set of Real Atlanta Housewives By Holly Grande

Ken had the unique experience of working with the Real Housewives of Atlanta this summer during the production of their premiere season. The show has since been picked up for a second season, and we will see plenty of Ken on the show as Sheree’s artistic director. Although he couldn’t give us any spoilers, Ken did offer us a glimpse into what it was like to be on camera. “You can really lose yourself and forget that the camera’s there because you’re so into what’s going on,” Ken said. He told us how he needed to always remember that he was on camera, and everything he said could be played back for millions to see. At the same time, Ken said that it was surprisingly easy to get comfortable with having a camera around 24/7, and talking to the camera as though it were a real person became second nature. Overall, Ken said that being a part of the Real Housewives of Atlanta was a great opportunity. He told us it was a huge learning experience, and he is looking forward to seeing the show air. “The party is going to look fabulous,” he said, referring to a future episode. We couldn’t get any more details out of him than that! Um...

Ivy League MBA Leaves Corporate

World to Build New Type of Beauty Salon IRVINE, Calif., March 3, 2008 — Beauty Heaven, Orange County’s newest luxury salon specializing in hair color, hair cutting, and Great Lengths hair extensions, has employed a unique program, created by Columbia Business School graduate and owner, Ann Merin, to ensure the best possible quality for its elite clientele. "When I moved to the West Coast 10 years ago I spent about a year trying to find a new stylist," said Ann Merin, Owner of Beauty Heaven. "I went to many of the top colorists and salons in Los Angeles and had mediocre results despite the astronomical prices. Eventually, I left my lucrative career and applied my Ivy League MBA and consulting background to find out why the quality of service, even from trained stylists at well known salons, was so unpredictable. I even went to cosmetology school and obtained my license so I could really understand how the industry works at every level. The result of my odyssey was the creation of a salon that specifically addresses the issues I uncovered." Ann discovered several factors that were critical to ensuring consistent, successful outcome at a Beauty Salon. "Of course training and talent are essential but I found that the most important determining factor for success is communication between the stylist and the client," said Ann. "This may sound simple, but I found that many of the most experienced stylists don’t do this very well. In fact, they sometimes let their own expertise bias their understanding of what a client is asking for. To address this, we created a specific communications protocol that ensures our understanding of a client’s goals and needs." Beauty Heaven’s approach also includes educating the client. "There are many people in the salon industry who will tell you that you should withhold information such formulation and placement technique from the client," said Ann. "I found, however, that informing the client and explaining their options creates a better outcome." Another critical factor that Ann identified is collaboration. "Usually, stylists at the same salon work very independently, do not share knowledge, and may even compete against each other. In this type of environment, a mistake has to happen to each individual stylist before everyone in the salon can learn from it. Our unique business model encourages our stylist to collaborate - to share ideas on how something might be achieved more easily or how something else might be avoided." Beauty Heaven is a full service salon specializing in hair color, hair cutting, Great Lengths hair extensions, NovaLash eyelash extensions and makeup application. It is located at 2626 Dupont Drive, Suite A-30, Irvine, CA 92612. More information about Beauty Heaven can be found on the salon’s web site at http://www.beauty-heaven.net or you may contact Ann Merin, owner, at 949-309-2462 ext. 701 or via email at ann@beauty-heaven.net. by dramatic expressions. Her love for fashion, combined with life’s dramatizations, have always been obvious inspirations encouraging her to seek out all that flares. Julianna’s style is a collaboration of raw reality which creates an allegory of unyielding beauty that seems to stimulate her vision as a wearable work of art. Her collections are greatly inspired by the past. Vintage fabrics and various eras have great influence over each season. Julianna is also inspired by many aspects of present day life. She believes that small moments have the ability to subtly inspire, and taking the time to notice is one of the most important aspect of receiving that inspiration. UM Introducing

UM introducing JenniferLopez,PrinceSalute Donatella Versace Jennifer Lopez, left, and Donatella Versace Bobbi Brown, CEO of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics 80 URBANMAINSTREAM.com nov 2008

Renata Espinosa October 24th, 2008 @ 12:06 AM - New York Prince didn't say a word - nor did he sing - at Fashion Group International's annual Night of Stars on Thursday, Oct. 23, but he did function as arm candy for Jennifer Lopez on stage as she introduced the evening's big honoree, Donatella Versace, who took home the "Superstar" award. Lopez may have done all the talking, but when Versace came out to accept her award (a few seconds too early - the Prince song that was supposed to play as she made her entrance started late), she made sure to thank Prince for "being a superstar." But Versace's timing gaffe wasn't an isolated incident - after a lengthy back and forth between friends Philippe Starck and Christian Louboutin, who both picked up awards (Starck for architecture and Louboutin as a "Star Honoree") - the announcer accidentally introduced presenter Ashley Olsen (there to salute Francisco Costa) in the midst of Louboutin's acceptance speech. Call it "Night of False Starts." Hosted by Barneys New York's Simon Doonan, he opened the night by humorously urging honorees and presenters to keep the speeches short, "Donatella has to get to Katz's deli in the Lower East Side by 11, she's judging a pickle-eating competition," he quipped. Karl Lagerfeld eschewed the unofficial time limit rule with his introduction of Harold Koda, the curator of the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and recipient of the "Fashion Oracle" award, with a speech that elaborated on fashion's relevance to the history books. "He is the future of fashion," said Lagerfeld about Koda. "He will decide what will be remembered from today," to which Koda responded, "I feel I should be handing Karl the award." Night of Stars also honored fashion designers Francisco Costa of Calvin Klein and Christopher Bailey of Burberry, Italian Vogue's Franca Sozzani and her sister Carla Sozzani, Net-a-Porter's Natalie Massenet and Harvey Weinstein. John Paul Dejoria of Paul Mitchell was given the "Sustainability" award and Bill McComb of the Liz Clairborne Foundation received the "Humanitarian" honors. FGI's theme this year was "The Alchemists." Alchemists, of course, were historically concerned with turning ordinary substances into precious metals like gold and silver. (next page)

"I think there is a really a profound alchemist aspect to fashion designers," said Tim Gunn. "They take materials that could be unexpected and elements that could be unexpected and make them into magic." The evening's proceedings took place at Cipriani on Wall Street, just doors down from the New York Stock Exchange where retail stocks have steadily plummeted for the past few days. "These are such desperate times that I think it's time to really celebrate beauty and quality and style," said Gunn. "Yes, it seems somewhat ironic that we have all these high-end designers and that we're celebrating the high-end of the industry, but we need to do that. It's not a time to bring things down to a lower level or to lower the bar. If anything, the bar needs to be raised." Um...

indie mus i c Review Wolfmother Rock Sydney, Australia by Danny Hobrock

Xavier Rudd

World Victoria, Australia by Danny Hobrock With a didgeridoo as a chief part of his repertoire, American fans may see Xavier Rudd as a uniquely Australian version of Jack Johnson. Soothing melodies and distinctive instruments, such as the didgeridoo, harmonica, guitar, Aztec drums and even ankle bells, describe his music. Rudd has become as recognizable for his many performances at music festivals around the world as he is for the five albums he has released. A selfdescribed "full-time barefooter", Rudd's lifestyle certainly comes out in his music. Much of his music speaks to the rights of Australia's Aboriginal people, environmental issues and other socially responsible themes that he holds to be important. Um...

Heavy guitar defines many of their tracks, making Wolfmother reminiscent of guitar bands of the 60's and 70's. Vocalist and guitarist Andrew Stockdale's brings fans back to a time when guitars ruled the music world. They have released one album, the self-titled Wolfmother, which received some success in the U.S., climbing to #25 on the charts. Still, many rock enthusiasts are not aware of the Australian band. The band is currently going through a restructuring phase, with a lineup change imminent. Stockdale is now in the process of recruiting new members so that the band can, as their Myspace page puts it, "let the good times roll!" Um... http://www.myspace.com/wolfmother

The Arctic Monkeys Punk/Rock Sheffield, UK by Danny Hobrock

The Arctic Monkeys have developed quite a following in England in a relatively short period of time, coming to stardom via Internet file sharing. Their single, ‘I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor’ reached #1 on the UK charts after its release, but they have yet to make a noticeable dent in the U.S. market. Alex Turner’s vocals are face paced and carry a heavy English accent. A punk rock/hard rock mix, some of their tracks deal with harsh social issues, as the single ‘When the Sun Goes Down’ features a theme of prostitution. The band has released two albums and plans to release a third album soon.

The Frames

Indie/Punk/Rock Dublin, Ireland by Danny Hobrock Formed in 1990, The Frames have become a staple in the Irish rock scene. The band has released six studio albums, the latest, The Cost, featured the song ‘Falling Slowly’, which won an Academy Award in 2008 for best original song in the movie Once. Their music might fall into the indie, folk or punk genres, with some rock ‘n roll and violin thrown in. As their Myspace page states, the music features “bi-polar swings, violently loud on one song, violently quiet the next.” The Frames have been influential in the Irish rock scene, with many former members going on to form other Irish bands. E Philz

Hip-Hop Austin, TX by Jackie Stein E Philz (born: Ian Philip Roberson a/k/a Ian Philip DeHorney) was born in July 1980 in Passaic, New Jersey. E loved music and listened to WBLS Hip-Hop on Saturday night and HOT 97 when it was HOT 103 as early as 1986. After moving to Texas in 1992, E became more invovled in writing music and poetry as a way to connect with life and friends back home. Living in Texas and visiting Jersey every summer made E’s style form into something unique. E formed close friendships with JayBee (beatmaker/producer), and Big Slugga (rapper). E wrote an essay and received a partial scholarship to the University of North Texas. While studying music, E linked up with a local band and began performing his lyrics to rock music in the dorms. This is when his love for music grew into something that couldn’t be ignored. Here he linked up with producer Terrance Hilton (Epiphany), and artists like Mike Corleone, Bigz Jarrell, Dre, J Jr, Kemp a/k/a K-Matic and END. dubbs lane Hip-Hop New York by Jackie Stein

Dubbs Lane was born C. Lanehart in one of the poverty stricken neighborhoods on the North Side of Baton Rouge, Louisiana on September 16th, 1983. The efforts of his mother and father made it possible for him to rise above the crime on the streets and focus on music. By the time he was nine years old he listened to Rob Bass’ “It Takes Two”, which he memorized verbatim. Initially, rap was a form of entertainment for Dubbs, but when he started writing his own lyrics at the age of ten, rap became his secret passion. Possessing a “Do it yourself attitude”, Dubbs recorded, mixed, and produced his latest project “Welcome to Myspace Vol. 1”. Keeping in mind that at the time of completion he was still an unknown underground artist, he decided to make it a free download available through his myspace music page. Through heavy promotion and dedication, Welcome to Myspace Vol. 1 has been downloaded well over 2,500 times from September 2007-March 2008. Welcome to Myspace Vol. 1 served as a platform for Dubbs Lane to increase his visibility in order to build the necessary buzz he needed to have his name mentioned as of one the “Fresh Faces” of the industry. With the strong will instilled in Dubbs Lane from his parents, he is no stranger to “paying

86 URBANMAINSTREAM.com nov 2008

dues”. Without any representation to book shows for him, he personally sought out promoters with his demo and performed on spot auditions, in hopes of being put on the performance bills of future shows. As a result of his tenacity he can be seen constantly performing at various open mic nights and underground shows around the DMV (Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia) area. Through his dedication, he has become a frequent performer at The Turntable Hip Hop Club, The Black Hole Club, The Sonar, and The Penguins just to name a few. His most notable performances to date were Spotlight Live in Time Square New York for the 50 Mics Tournament Challenge. Most recently he became an East Coast finalist on The Source Magazine Unsigned Hype Tour. Dubbs Lane has evolved from humble beginnings, making song parodies and mix-tapes, to starting a record label with the help of a childhood friend. As a partner of Fresh Air Ent., C. “Dubbs Lane” Lanehart thrives on overseeing the completion of albums that can be listened to from start to finish without ever desiring to skip a song. With the state of instability that the Hip Hop industry is in, Dubbs Lane is eagerly waiting to tackle the task at hand. Dubbs Lane has been profoundly influenced by Russell Simmons, Jay-Z, Master P, Ice Cube, and Cash Money. He often uses their success and business savvy as a blueprint for starting his own corporation from the ground up and turning his brand into a household name someday. He is a driven perfectionist and it shows in his various music endeavors. Um...

chero michel Urban Milwaukee, WS by Jackie Stein

As expressed by the title of her debut CD, Chero Michel has teamed up with a superstar lineup of producers to create her infectious LP, Learned From the Best. Chero has created an album that is dynamic as life itself, mixing smooth, exotic, and energetic tracks with inspiring, evocative, and poignant lyrics. A Milwaukee native, this chanteuse has a wealth of experiences to draw from to create her music. Like many of the legends of R&B, as a child, she began her career as a performer with vocal training rooted in the sensibilities of the gospel choir. And she would later grow into a dynamic entertainer with formal dance instruction in Las Vegas and New York. This combination of music and performance gave her the tools that she needed to become the ultimate artist. In November of 2006, Chero Michel would lose her mother to cancer. After taking a brief hiatus from the music business, Chero would regain her strength and her dream, and reemerged on the music scene with a perspective and love for life that permeates

88 URBANMAINSTREAM.com nov 2008

every beat of her music. Passion is the energy that drives Learned From the Best. From the outset of the album, Chero Michel captivates the listener with vivid snapshots of life, love, joy, and heartbreak, as she effortlessly glides from track to track. On tracks like Irresistible and the title track, Learned From the Best, Michel sings with an energy that would ignite any party. Songs like Love Song and Everything illustrate what love is supposed to sound like. And power ballads like Only 16 and Motherless Child demonstrate Michel’s strong yet gentle consciousness. Present throughout is Chero’s bright voice, which reflects a source of inner strength that transcends all of the different emotions that she explores. Chero Michel’s Learned From the Best is “feel good” music. Her bright voice shines through her powerful compositions, creating a pleasant blend of classic, yet fresh R&B that moves you to dance as well as think about the albums’ gentle message. Chero Michel’s ability to accomplish such a balance puts her in a league of her own, positioning her to be a leader of a new and refreshing direction in R&B. Um...
