Garry W. Jenkins DEAN and WILLIAM S. PATTEE PROFESSOR OF LAW
“In this rapidly-shifting legal, political, and social landscape, we believe that the world needs Minnesota-trained lawyers—now more than ever.” Dear Friend of Minnesota Law: It has been a great year at the University of Minnesota Law School, and it is a genuine joy to thank you for your leadership and generosity in supporting the Law School. Together, nearly 2,000 of us—including 275 new donors—helped make Minnesota Law stronger and more vibrant. We celebrated a record-breaking year for alumni engagement and philanthropy, touching the daily lives of the nearly 675 extraordinary students across our degree programs and all who teach at the Law School. This includes $1.07 million in support of the annual fund—the highest annual fund total in the Law School’s history. Our success was fueled in part by our new Reunion Giving Program, which increased attendance by 30% for Spring Alumni Weekend, drawing alumni and friends from across the globe, our highest reunion attendance ever. The 3L Class Gift campaign likewise broke both participation and giving records, underscoring the importance of philanthropy to the newest members of our alumni community. And, finally, our endowment hit a new milestone this year, surpassing $149 million for the first time. Last spring, we launched an ambitious $80 million campaign for the Law School, called Driven to Lead. We enter into this effort with tremendous momentum and a bold vision for our future. In this rapidly-shifting legal, political, and social landscape, we believe that the world needs Minnesota-trained lawyers—now more than ever. If your name appears in this report, you have our sincerest thanks. If you are not included this year, I hope you will consider changing that next year. Every gift matters. I look forward to seeing what more we can accomplish together. Sincerely,
Garry W. Jenkins Dean William S. Pattee Professor of Law

Dean Garry W. Jenkins at the launch of the Driven to Lead campaign.
The University of Minnesota Law School has launched an $80 million campaign, Driven to Lead. The campaign builds upon our distinguished legacy to advance the innovation, excellence, and access required to produce a new generation of wise counselors and visionaries. This campaign comes at a critical time for the profession and our institution. The ever-changing legal landscape demands that we strengthen our competitive edge as an elite public law school. We must remain at the forefront in reshaping legal education and ensuring our graduates become the great lawyer-leaders of their time. Historically, tuition has never fully covered the costs of education, and nearly every graduate—whether from the 1960s, 1980s, or 2000s—has benefitted from a silent scholarship made possible through substantial state funding and generous annual support from the alumni community. Together, with our world-class faculty, we will prepare students to become lawyer-leaders who are poised to solve the complex social, economic and business issues of our time.

Changing Lives
An Unprecedented Gift Supports Work that is Changing Lives In 2017, the Law School received a $25 million gift from the Robina Foundation—the largest gift in the Law School’s history—to permanently establish the James H. Binger Center for New Americans. Binger Center students and faculty provide urgently needed legal services to noncitizens, pursue litigation that will improve our nation’s immigration laws, and educate noncitizens about their rights. The Binger Center works with its nonprofit and law firm partners to expand the availability and impact of pro bono representation, while offering students an unparalleled opportunity to work on critical cases. In the last year alone, the Binger Center impacted the lives of 1,977 individuals

being a community that supports one another to help everyone succeed. —BRANDON BLAKELY, 3L MCCANTS STEWART SCHOLAR NOW: ASSOCIATE, BRIGGS AND MORGAN
For years,
Brandon Blakely, 3L, has
made it his job to be there for others. As an undergraduate at Arizona State University, where he majored in psychology, he worked as a resident assistant in a dormitory. After graduation, he worked as a child services specialist in Phoenix for two years, departing to attend graduate school at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, where he earned a master’s degree in education. Blakely says Professor Benjamin Casper Sanchez ’97 with students from the Federal Immigration Litigation Clinic.

The best thing about receiving a scholarship from Minnesota Law is the financial security that allows me to focus on how my law degree can have the biggest impact. I don’t need to make a decision based on the debt burden; I can do what will be best for my goals. —EDUARDO CASTRO, 2L
I M PAC T OF GIVING
Eduardo Castro decided to study law after he spent two years in AmeriCorps helping low-income Milwaukee residents access legal services in a community health center. “It was an illuminating experience because I saw how law was manifesting in a real way for people, and I witnessed the visceral impact of

the law based on the ability or inability to navigate it,” says Castro, who grew up in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. Scholarships and tuition reciprocity made Minnesota Law an attractive choice, as did the Robina Public Interest Scholars program, which funded Castro’s summer internship with Legal Action of Wisconsin.
As a 1L, he explored litigation through a civil procedure class with Professor Brad Clary ’75 and reached the finals in an oral advocacy tournament, where he argued in front of a Minnesota Supreme Court Justice. Castro will apply those skills at Milwaukee firm Husch Blackwell this summer and is keeping an open mind about his future career path. He credits financial aid for that privilege.

Martha and David Kadue CLASS OF 1978
“The University of Minnesota opened a lot of doors for us. We realize how lucky we’ve been and we want to give back.” Martha and David Kadue met their first day at the University of Minnesota Law School. Both were assigned to Section B, a group that became the center of their academic and social life. Four decades later, they launched the Section B Scholarship Fund. “When we went to law school, the state picked up the largest share of our education,” Martha says. “We were able to get help from our parents and graduate with zero debt,” she says. “But I didn’t know anyone who had debt that affected the job they were going to take. Now, if you have $120,000 in debt and want to work for a nonprofit or government agency or as a public defender, you can’t.” The Kadues converged at Minnesota Law from two different paths. Martha grew up in Beatrice, Nebraska, with a father who was a lawyer and state district court judge. David was raised in Minneapolis in a family of engineers, doctors, and teachers. Both majored in history as undergraduates. After receiving law degrees in 1978, Martha worked for the office of chief counsel of the IRS in St. Paul, while David moved to Florida for a one-year teaching position, then to Washington, DC. He started an LL.M. program but then interviewed for a clerkship with Judge Roy Stephenson of the Eighth Circuit. Because Stephenson was in Des Moines, his friend Judge George MacKinnon of the D.C. Circuit interviewed David in Washington. He got the job. And then MacKinnon called to see if David was available the next year.
“I applied for one clerkship on the court of appeals and got two,” he says, after Martha prods him to tell the story. David and Martha reconnected in the Midwest. Jobs took the couple to Washington and then to Los Angeles, where David built a career as an employment lawyer with Seyfarth Shaw. Martha worked as a tax attorney with Security Pacific Corp., spent time at home with their daughter, and then finished a Ph.D. in history. That degree led to a job teaching constitutional history and law courses at California State University-Long Beach. And it was there that Martha observed the consequences of the high cost of a legal education. “Most of my students don’t have the luxury of living in a dorm and just going to school,” she says. “Many of them work 20 to 40 hours a week. Then they want to go to law school and I have to ask them how they will pay for it.” “They would be good lawyers who would serve the community,” she says. “It hurts to have to discourage some of them from going to law school. I help them figure out ways to pay for it but we also have to focus on reality.” The Kadues hope the Section B Scholarship will give Minnesota Law students the same opportunities they had. “The University of Minnesota opened a lot of doors for us,” David says. “We realize how lucky we’ve been and we want to give back.”

Heidi Kitrosser ROBINS, KAPLAN, MILLER AND CIRESI PROFESSOR OF LAW 2017–18 GUGGENHEIM FELLOW
“Our faculty are engaged in some of the most pressing issues of the day.” Professor Heidi Kitrosser dedicates her research to questions at the root of American consciousness. “I am most interested in the importance of the free flow of information about our government to enable the people of the United States to better oversee that government,” she says. “I’ve been fortunate to be able to explore these questions from many angles.” Kitrosser joined the faculty in 2006 and is an expert on the constitutional law of federal government secrecy, free speech, and separation of powers. She teaches a number of related courses, including Constitutional Law and Freedom of Speech, and serves as the Robins, Kaplan, Miller and Ciresi Professor of Law. During the 2017-18 school year, Kitrosser received a Guggenheim Fellowship to research a book about law and the policy of whistleblowing among federal government employees and contractors. Her first book, Reclaiming Accountability: Transparency, Executive Power, and the U.S. Constitution, was published in 2015 by the University of Chicago Press. “Our faculty are engaged in some of the most pressing issues of the day, ranging from international human rights to immigration to corporate and government ethics to press freedoms,” she says. Professors then transfer that engagement and enthusiasm to the classroom by connecting their assignments to real-world events and working with students in clinics and practicums. “Our generous donors make all of this possible, helping to keep our law school the flagship law school in the state, and a leading voice in local, state, national, and international arenas,” Kitrosser continues.
She views Minnesota Law’s culture of giving as a reflection of that flagship status and the school’s history and mission. She especially enjoys her interactions with perhaps the most famous alumnus, Vice President Walter Mondale ’56. They share an interest in congressional oversight. “He is a real part of the law school and contributes a lot,” she says. “He embodies all of the qualities you’d want in a citizen, let alone a leader in the United States, and the fact that he attributes that to the Law School is an inspiration.” Kitrosser’s research enables her to travel the country to speak and consult on first amendment and Constitution topics. When she has time to herself, she enjoys reading, paddleboarding, Twitter, spending time with her husband, and playing with her cat and dog. She is continually impressed with the Minnesota Law students and their commitment not only to their studies but also to the larger community. Like many faculty members, Kitrosser donates to the Law School and views that as another way to contribute to the community and provide resources for students from all backgrounds. “I see an unusually high level of camaraderie and a sense of treating one another decently while going about their professional and educational responsibilities,” she says. “Many of our students want to be able to choose a career based on their passion and desire to make an impact in the world. The more we can help them be unconstrained by financial burdens, the more they can make career decisions not based on those financial burdens.”

Timothy Sanders Szabo “I had exposure to immigration clients through a summer job, clinic work, and class work, and I was able to see how I could really help people.” Tim Sanders Szabo merged his interest in law and passion for international studies into a career in immigration law. A 2018 graduate of Minnesota Law, he recently began a two-year Equal Justice Works fellowship with the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota in St. Paul. In 2008, while Sanders Szabo was a student at University of Northern Iowa, U.S. Immigration and Customs raided the Agriprocessors Inc. meatpacking plant and arrested almost 400 workers in Postville, about 80 miles from campus. “They had a mass hearing with all the individuals they detained at the National Cattle Congress near us. That was my first exposure to [our immigration system] and it was crazy.” Sanders Szabo recalls. He spent his last term studying in Oviedo, Asturias, Spain, then moved to Jaen, Andalucia, to teach English for two years. He completed a research project on northern African immigrants in Spain and that further piqued his interest in immigration. The combination of a scholarship and a dynamic human rights program brought Sanders Szabo to Minnesota Law. As a 1L, he worked in the James H. Binger Center for New Americans as an interpreter and translator. He worked for Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services that first summer and served in the immigration division. When Sanders Szabo started his second year, he took Professor Steve Meili’s immigration law class and enrolled in the Federal Immigration Litigation Clinic. “By the end of that fall semester, I’d had exposure to immigration clients through my summer job, clinic
work, and class work, and I was able to see how the work I put in could really help people,” Sanders Szabo says. “(Sanders Szabo) was a leader for the cause of immigrant justice at Minnesota Law from the moment he arrived as a 1L and organized volunteer efforts for asylum seekers,” says Professor Benjamin Casper Sanchez ’97. “As a 2L student with the Binger Center’s Federal Immigration Litigation Clinic, he represented a Central American child fleeing persecution. In his 3L year he returned to the clinic, co-argued the same child’s case before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, and also co-argued and won a habeas corpus action in U.S. District Court that secured the release of the father of two U.S. citizen children after nearly two years of immigration detention that had unlawfully separated the family.” Sanders Szabo’s Equal Justice Works fellowship entails expanding immigration legal aid to North Dakota and South Dakota through partnerships with medical clinics and other service providers that work with the immigrant community. The Immigrant Law Center runs similar projects in Red Wing and Moorhead. When he takes a break from law, Sanders Szabo spends time with his wife, Lisa, and their dog and cat. He also plays saxophone and records with his soul group, The Maytags. His new job began only a week before he was interviewed for this article. “The past five or six days have only reinforced that I want to work continue to in immigration,” Sanders Szabo says. “This is kind of like a dream right now.”

Engaging Students and Alumni
Caroline Schmitz, 2L, Professor Robert A. Stein ’61, and Brandon Blakley, 3L, at the 2018 Spring Alumni Brunch.
I thoroughly enjoyed interviewing Professor Stein at the 2018 Spring Alumni Weekend Brunch. The “Reverse Stein Lecture” was a unique opportunity to learn more about the vivid life and impressive accomplishments of the beloved professor and former Dean of our Law School. Further, it was powerful to hear stories from other attendees about the influence that Professor Stein has had on the lives of his students and colleagues. Professor Stein has left an indelible mark on our Law School and legal community, and this insightful interview brought that to life. —CAROLINE SCHMITZ, 2L

The Saeks Public Interest Residency Program allowed me to forge my own way in law. I feel fortunate that I can now fight for the causes that brought me to law school in the first place. —ABIGAIL HENCHECK, 3L SAEKS PUBLIC INTEREST FELLOW, GENDER JUSTICE
I M PAC T OF GIVING
The Saeks Public Interest Residency Program, established by Allen ’56 and Linda Saeks, connects leading public interest and government organizations with high-achieving 3L students. Students work full-time during their third year of law school for a nonprofit or government agency and have a guaranteed, full-time, paid legal position with the same organization the year following graduation. This innovative
2017–18
model provides students with valuable legal training and a pipeline to employment, while providing the organizations with much-needed legal assistance. The Residency Program, now in its third year, has partnered with 12 local agencies to host 19 Saeks Fellows, providing strong opportunities for students to jump start their careers in public service. Along with Minnesota Law’s experiential, career development, and resource
19 law students have served as Saeks Fellows since 2016.
support for public interest careers, the Residency Program is attracting those committed to service to Minnesota Law. Due to the success of the program, the National Jurist recognized Minnesota Law as an
Innovative Law School.

I M PAC T OF GIVING
“Our collective support means the Law School can continue to attract top students from around the country and the world with scholarships.”
2017-18
Danyll Foix ’98 ANNUAL FUND CHAIR
Dear Law School Community, I am proud of my connection to the University of Minnesota Law School and am deeply grateful to serve as chair of the 2017–18 Annual Fund. Like you, I have made a commitment to this great institution, to pay it forward to the next generation of lawyer-leaders. As annual contributors to the Law School, we have an important role. The Law School relies on the gifts from alumni and friends to pick up where endowment income, tuition revenue, and state funding leave off. Our collective support means the Law School can continue to attract top students from around the country and the world with scholarships. It means continued support for one of the most distinguished clinical legal education programs in the country. And importantly, our support expands experiential opportunities that equip our students to be leaders in solving the complex social, economic, and business problems of our time. I am asking you to join me in giving because––quite frankly––we cannot achieve this goal without you. I have made a commitment to personally reach out to fellow alumni asking them to join me in supporting the Law School this year. If everyone who gave last year renews their support and finds another alumnus/a to also make a gift, we would literally double our participation in the Annual Fund this year. Our participation as alumni not only provides much needed support, but is also a signal to our current and future students (and our greater community) that we believe in this institution, and in what we can achieve together. I hope you will join me by renewing or increasing your gift to the Law School today. Sincerely, Danyll Foix ’98 P.S. To renew your gift before December 31 online, give.umn.edu/law. 44

Ways to Give The Annual Fund The Law School Annual Fund leverages thousands of gifts of all sizes and the support of our alumni to make a real impact on our students and the communities we serve. Between 2000 and 2015, the gap between state support and the Law School budget has increased by 250%.
Major Gifts Major gifts are vital to the Law School’s ability to maintain its position as a top-tier school by attracting and retaining the highest quality faculty, developing innovative programs and experiential learning opportunities, and providing the scholarship funds to attract the best and brightest students who will continue Minnesota Law’s tradition of excellence.
Planned Gifts Including a gift for the Law School through your estate planning allows you to have a lasting legacy by giving more than you ever thought possible.
