“One of the best parts of my 1L year was how engaging and accessible the career center was! I could always speak with my career counselor (shout out to Claudia Melo), and having her guidance and support made the job search seamless . She helped me become comfortable networking and putting myself out there, which made all the difference when I began interviewing . ”
ISABELLA JURISCIN ’25“My favorite part of the 1L year was spending time with my study group . We would help each other work through tricky concepts from class, but we also made each other laugh along the way . After a long day of studying, we would treat ourselves to a nice dinner at one of the Twin Cities’ many amazing restaurants Building those relationships has been one of the best parts of law school . ”
—PHILIP DE SA E SILVA ’24“A major highlight of my 1L year was writing & arguing the spring brief assignment for Legal Research and Writing . The writing process provided wonderful opportunities for reflection on how far I had come thanks to a year surrounded by bright peers and engaging professors, while the oral arguments offered a first glimpse into effective courtroom advocacy . This experience deepened my gratitude for the lifetime of interesting career paths that await me after graduation . ”
—CHAD BERRYMAN ’25“The best part of my 1L year was our Law in Practice course . I came to law school completely unsure of what being a lawyer actually meant Throughout Law in Practice I was able to meet with pretend clients, write memos, participate in negotiations, and even argue before a judge . I had the chance to experience what it would really be like to be a lawyer and it made me so much more confident in my decision to go to law school . ”

“One of my favorite experiences of law school so far has been working with the Racial Justice Law Clinic with Professor Zaragoza . Having the chance to work directly on powerful and impactful litigation cases is an experience I am incredibly grateful for Additionally, the clinic has taught me to expand my horizons on what it means to be a lawyer I’ve learned that the law has as much power to help as it does harm, and how we choose to practice it plays a large role in the preservation of justice .
Over the course of this clinic, I’ve strengthened my legal research abilities and gained confidence in what type of lawyer I hope to become . ”

“Minnesota stood out as a unique school that was academically rigorous, with excellent career outcomes where students could work in the legal market of their choosing, all while fostering a community of collaboration and support that was entirely different from other schools I was considering . I was impressed with how the alumni described this emphasis on collegiality as the building blocks for personal and professional relationships upon which they built their legal careers . In my time at Minnesota I have felt that the support of my classmates, faculty, and staff enables me to be the best version of myself and encourages me to reach new academic and professional heights .”

Uptown is south west of downtown Minneapolis and 2.4 miles from the Law School. Metro Transit offers numerous buses that directly connect Uptown to the University.
Many law students choose to live in Uptown, which offers a plentiful mix of apartment/condo-style living as well as rental home and four-plex options. The great thing about housing in Uptown is that with many different rent levels, you’re likely to find a housing option that suits your needs and stays within your budget. While not within walking distance to campus, Metro Transit offers numerous buses that directly connect Uptown to the University.
Uptown is a bustling and artsy area of Minneapolis, featuring the 11-acre Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, the Art Car Show, the Uptown Art Fair, and the Walker Art Museum. Uptown is also home to the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes where you can enjoy more than 13 miles of lakeside paths for exercise and relaxation. Uptown is also known for an eclectic mix of dining choices, such as Thai, Japanese, Chinese/ Latin fusion, and Italian, as well as outdoor and rooftop options.
We have provided this guide for your convenience as you consider housing options in Minneapolis. For additional housing information, we encourage you to visit the Admitted Student Website under the Housing & Transportation tab.
Another popular neighborhood is Northeast (aka “Nordeast”). The most common types of rental property in NE are homes and duplexes, though a few high-rise apartments have been built recently. Northeast is a great option for students who are looking to live in a more residential area with a community feel plus easy access to great restaurants, shops, Downtown and the Law School. The bus lines running from NE to Downtown and the Law School are very efficient, including a number of express buses which run directly to the University. Although Northeast does feel more residential than Uptown or Downtown, the community has commercial districts stretching along the major corridors of University Avenue, Central Avenue, East Hennepin Avenue, Broadway Avenue, and Stinson and New Brighton Boulevards towards the city limits. Additionally, many rental homes have yards, which can be a big draw for those with dogs or children.
Students live in a number of apartment buildings that are literally across the street from the Law School. Convenience and accessibility are top priorities for those that select to live in this area.
Downtown is adjacent to the Seven Corners neighborhood (where the Law School is located). Although parts of Downtown are within walking distance to the Law School, there are many buses that connect Downtown to campus in as little as five minutes. Home to many Fortune 500 companies such as Target, U.S. Bancorp, and Xcel Energy, the Downtown neighborhood offers many places to unwind. Here you can find an array of restaurants and bars, anything from award-winning chili and burgers to Thai, vegetarian to pizza, fine-dining to casual.
To beat the winter cold, Downtown features nearly 8 miles of skyway systems to connect almost every building in Downtown. You can leave your apartment, head to the downtown Target, catch a bite to eat at the newest restaurant, and take in a movie without ever stepping foot outside! There are many communities offering affordably priced one and two bedrooms. Downtown also has many condos for rent by owner, which can be great for students looking to live in this vibrant area.
Northeast has a unique and quirky urban culture with a plethora of art galleries, farmers markets, brew pubs, ethnic restaurants, and family-run businesses.
Several apartment buildings are located across the street from the Law School.
15
The Twin Cities is home to 15 Fortune 500 companies, many which are located in downtown Minneapolis.
Several bus lines as well as the Green Line light rail run from the North Loop to campus, making it easy for students to get to the law school in 15-20 minutes.
The Loring Park neighborhood is on the southwest corner of downtown Minneapolis. It houses a park of the same name which hosts various cultural, social, and political events. The park is surrounded by apartment buildings, many dating from the early 1900s. Recent construction in the area has brought many new town homes and condominiums to the area. Loring Park is locally known for its diverse social environment and as a nexus for many arts and cultural events. Notable buildings in the area include the Walker Art Center, Basilica of St. Mary, Minneapolis Convention Center, and the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden.
Dinkytown is located immediately north of the University’s East Bank campus. It is a very popular housing option for both undergraduate and graduate students. Traditional student housing options are plentiful. The Washington Avenue Bridge Bus Circulator provides easy access from the East Bank campus to the Law School’s front door.
The North Loop neighborhood is located west of Hennepin Avenue, near downtown Minneapolis. The area has experienced tremendous growth since the construction of nearby Target Field. Many bars, restaurants, and small retail shops contribute to the vibrancy of the North Loop. The North Loop is popular among young professionals. Accordingly higher-end apartments with many amenities are the most common housing found in the North Loop. Several bus lines as well as the Green Line light rail run from the North Loop to campus, making it easy for students to get to the Law School in 15-20 minutes.

“I wanted to attend law school where I could expand my legal education outside of the classrooms, and Minnesota Law’s strong commitment to experiential learning programs caught my eye . Law in Practice was one of my favorite courses during 1L year and helped me tremendously during my summer job . I’ve been enrolled in the law school’s bankruptcy clinic as a student attorney during my 2L year and as a student director my 3L year . Interacting with real clients and working together with them to find an opportunity for a fresh start has been extremely fulfilling and motivating for me . I studied abroad at Bocconi University in Milan, Italy, this fall . This was an amazing opportunity to further my knowledge in business law while gaining an international perspective in business .”
