The University of Mindanao officially begins blended limited face-to-face classes for Academic
Year 2022-2023
After two years of being in a flexible modality, in which students must meet their classes virtually, The University of Mindanao Matina Campus officially launched its blended restricted face-to-face classes for the academic year 2022-2023, last August 8, 2022.
University of Mindanao students
have their schedules of face-to-face and online classes through BB Learn; where face-toface classes are divided into two particular schedules, which are M-Sat1 and M-Sat2, the M-Sat1 students will have on-site classes on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday while the M-Sat2 will be on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. More than
half of the students arrived on campus on the first day, prompting a queue to build up from the Matina-Gravahan gate up to the S&R Matina highway, where health protocols were strictly observed, and students' vaccination and identification cards were checked before entering the University.
In an interview, Steve Shim Maghalin, a

Third-Year student of BSCE- Structural Engineering, stated that despite the long line and exhaustion he felt on the first day, he is excited to get to school because this is his first time attending faceto-face classes and meeting new people at the institution.
"Eagerness has been present from the beginning of blended
learning and continues to be present now that I am attending face-toface classes," he noted.
As the University welcomes back its students, the different colleges and departments had their unique way of welcoming them back in the form of booths which gave returning students and freshmen a glimpse of what UM has in store.

ficer: Justin Banguis of Empowered Language and Literature Teachers Society (ELLiTeS) President Andrada discussed the goals of the council for this academic year.
"CSO, for this academic year, aims to continue the vision it established in the previous year — to advocate for unity and peer collaboration among the forty-eight diverse student organizations in the university. We advocate for social awareness and environmental protection as the main drivers of this vision," he stated.
Andrada invites students to take part in their future activities. These include environmental conservation promotion, advocacy week allocated for various student campaigns, and the resurgence of UMyong Festival.
"The UMyong Festival, where student organizations will exhibit the skills and talents of their members through friendly competitions, will be revived after two years of postponement due to the pandemic," he added.
The Vice President also shared about the
shifting of the council from purely online to a hybrid setup in their deliverables to students.
"The transition from online to face-to-face events is indeed challenging. Yet, the CSO believes that despite these adjustments, we can make great things happen as we align to this year’s branding, CSO Connect, "she said.
The election proper commences last September 30, 2022, through Zoom Meeting Conference led by Student Engagement Coordinator Vaughn Albert Maxey.

During administrationmy this year, I plan to have a memorable journey as a President by implementing programs and activities that will help students bring out the best in them. I am a leader who champions others. This fire burning inside me is inspired by the call of need by my people. That is why I want to elucidate one’s strength and galvanize this to make it an opportunity for them in the future, leading to various activities that are not only centered within the college but also very helpful in achieving holistic development and growth— transformative. I want them to reach greater heights and use different lenses to view various life perspectives. Furthermore, I want
my leadership to be centered on excellence with compassion. I want to create a safe space for everybody to collaborate, express, and share their emotions freely, as the world is already cruel. I want this to be the governing principle during this time that hopefully will be ubiquitous in no time— compassion.
How will you encourage your constituents amidst the challenges of shifting from online to face-to-face setup?
Leading by example is our mightiest armor in facing this pandemic-circulated learning style. What I mean by that is that as a leader, I will be active and enthusiastic enough to plan and participate in various activities laid upon our college and outside of
it because if they see your eagerness to perform, it radiates to them that you are enjoying what you are doing and that is what I want them to do, enjoy whatever activities you are executing. Moreso, I want them to not think outside the box but believe that no box hinders them from fulfilling their desires. I want them to realize that they are more than what others boxed them up. Also, encourage them by giving help through peer tutoring as we have a branch organization under our college that opens its arms to them. To add, have the organization a sense of compassion for one another. Starting it within yourself will have ripple effects that create macro effects on many's lives.
students across the campus. Furthermore, I plan to extend our service and help to the communities needing help, especially those students whose parents cannot provide basic school supplies. Thus, we will have a community extension for them. Additionally, I promise to cater their concerns as much as possible to address the students' problems and bridge them to the management. What is your
leadership style in this face-toface setup?
I will be a leader who will lead my constit- uents by example and will always listen to their suggestions and ideas. I will not decide on my own but instead, ask their opin- ions first before coming up with a conclusion or decision. Moreover, I will delegate certain tasks properly and equally divide it with my co-officers to studentencourage organiza-

What are your plans as President of your College?
I have firm faith in my capacity to bring about transformation. Even though I have just a limited amount of formal experience in the role of "leader," I am certain that I have practical plans that may be of greater use to both my college and the institution as a whole
Seeing as how I would be stepping in a new position, I will consult the other individuals I will be working with to get insight into how I may improve my service to the student entirety. When working toward making the CEE a more welcoming and supportive community, my plan is to examine all the potential avenues; this includes fostering constructive relationships between the students and the instructors and cultivating the holistic aspects of everyone. In a nutshell, as a leader, I will contribute to
the development of my fellow engineering students who are stationed around me by assisting them in coalescing into a powerful force and boldly guiding them toward accomplishing their objectives. What is your leadership style in this face-to-face setup?
I would describe my leadership style as direct and leading by example. I lead from the vanguard by acting, manifesting what needs to be done, and supervising my team organized to ensure we’re all on the same page
and contributing coequally. Though I am confident in taking leadership roles and delegating responsibilities, I also value being actively engaged in projects and providing tangible assistance to my team to maintain morale and motivate my peers. How will you encourage your constituents amidst the challenges of shifting from an online to a faceto-face setup? This pandemic has starkly exposed the vulnerability of our education systems. Now that we are back to the
in-person learning process, some of us aren't yet physically, psychologically, or financially ready to step into a new historic abode. Despite difficulties, be confident in yourself despite the difficulty of the situation. Realize that you already possess strength superior to everything standing in your way. Rest assured that as your leader, I shall use the authority given to me to instigate activities that will encourage you to continue going forward no matter what. Laban lang ta, Ga!
What are your plans as President of your College?
As a CCJE President, I would like to organize interactive activities for the students since most students are “online babies” due to the pandemic. And I will also organize
activities that will enhance their skills and talents. What is your leadership style in this face-toface setup? Transformational and Participative Leadership. Transformational Leadership emphasizes change and
transformation, and Participative Leadership creates unity, develops bonds, creates energy, and instills passion. How will you encourage your constituents amidst the challenges of shifting from an online to a face-to-face
setup?
Most of the students enrolled this year are coming from an online setup. It is very new for them to participate in different activities. The best way to encourage them is by giving an activity such as sports to promote interac -
tion between students and various seminars and workshops to refresh their minds.

The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly impacted students’ opportunities to learn worldwide. Students and teachers have been forced to shift from traditional classrooms to emergency online/remote learning. They face key challenges in
excellence in any way possible within the student body. What is your leadership style in this face-to-face setup?
My leadership style is situational leadership. I really want to emphasize this kind of leadership because it means that you must determine and understand situations. We have to analyze and assess where we could put something; what problems we want to solve; who we want to help; and how we can add value to people’s lives, causes, and organizations. With that being said, as a leader, you have to determine the strengths and weaknesses of your co-student leaders and your constituents in order for you to know when to delegate, support, coach,

to determine what drives them in this kind of setup. Because in determining what drives you, you will have a passion for certain things, and when we can connect with what those passions are, the more powerful we will be. We should be constantly trying to determine what we are passionate about; what problems you want to solve; who you want to help; and how you can add value to people’s lives, causes, and organizations around you. And we are all far stronger leaders when we do what motivates us, because we work harder and more productively when we are involved in things we care about. Krezyl Joy Ungab was crowned as Hiyas sa Kalambuan 2022 representing the Bagobo-Klata tribe last August 17, 2022. The award is one of the three crowns sought after by the 11 ethnolinguistic groups in Davao City for the Hiyas sa Kadayawan celebration.
Ungab is a 4th-year Bachelor of Physical Education student of the University of Mindanao. As a student
entering her last year in the program, she admitted that the journey towards the crown was tough. But she managed to comply with her responsibilities as a student and as a Hiyas with the support she got from the people around her.
Fueled by her advocacy to inspire the IP youth to embrace their respective tribes, winning the crown was a great thing for Ungab as it has opened doors
for her to realize this purpose. “For the young people of the tribe, not just in Bago bo-Klata, but for the 11 ethno linguistic tribes, do not be ashamed of your own tribe. Stand firm and strong and be a war rior of your tribe."
