BIOSTATISTICS COLLABORATION and CONSULTING CORE (BCCC)
BCCC Annual Newsletter— December 2014 New Cycle of CTSI-Sponsored KL2 Awards Applicants who are seeking biostatistics support in their application must initiate a request for support by December 18, 2014, in order to initiate development.
As part of the Miami CTSI, the Biostatistics Collaboration and Consulting Core offers support for your REDCap implementation. This includes: Going over your project and helping you to design a database that will ensure all important data has a field and is uniformly coded Setting up field validation and required fields to ensure all important items are filled out when populating Setting up reports to determine state of data population Programming branching logic to ensure that only fields relevant to an instance are displayed and filled out Teaching you how to use other features such as the data exportation tool REDCap is accessible to all UM Faculty, Staff, and Students. External users can also access REDCap if they have a CaneID. No access request form is required to log into this application REDCap is an application that allows users to build and manage online surveys and databases quickly and securely.

Support available under the Miami CTSI Biostatistics support is available to clinical and translational researchers through the Research Design and Biostatistics Program of the Miami CTSI to ensure that the appropriate statistical methodology is incorporated in research. GRANT DEVELOPMENT Biostatistical considerations in the design and analysis of proposed investigations are critical to the procurement of funding and quality of research. The Biostatistics Collaboration and Consulting Core (BCCC), as part of the Research Design and Biostatistics Component of the Miami CTSI, is available to provide support for grant proposal development. This support may be funded by service credits awarded by the Research Design and Biostatistics Component of the Miami CTSI, and would thus be free of charge to the investigator.
COLLABORATION PLANS Matching funds for commitments to collaboration plans are available through the Research Design and Biostatistics Component of the Miami CTSI. If you are interested in engaging in a collaboration plan to ensure dedicated biostatistics support for your research efforts in the coming fiscal year, please let us know.
BIOSTATISTICS WORKSHOPS The BCCC plans to develop and offer workshops on various topics available to the UM research community in the upcoming months. The format for these workshops would be a presentation on a specific topic followed by group discussion, for a specific Department, as well as one-on-one meetings with biostatistics staff to answer specific questions.
SUPPORT ACTIVITIES
Research/grant development, grant or manuscript review, (K-awards, institutional pilot grants, NIH grants etc) manuscripts, abstracts, posters, study design, protocol development, survey design, randomization, power and sample size, statistical analysis, safety committee, etc. Service credits from the Miami CTSI may be available to qualified investigators in prioritized research areas to provide the above described support activities. Other Ways to Engage in Support: Short term agreements, Ongoing collaboration plan, grant funded. Matched support may be available to research groups with dedicated collaboration plans. Initial Meetings: To determine the scope of work and provide feedback concerning design and statistical considerations. Dedicated Office Hours : Monday, Wednesday and Friday 2:00 PM to3:00 PM Tuesday, and Thursday 11:00 AM to12:00 PM Walk‐ins welcome; Appointments preferred
It would begin with a presentation, topic in agreement with Department’s needs, and then be open for a roundtable type of discussion among participants with the biostatisticians. Then attendees can ask specific questions of the statisticians regarding grants proposals they may be currently developing and engage in one-on-one consultation during this time. Fee for participation will be determined based on the preparation time, the time engaged in the workshop for the BCCC staff, and will be stated at the time the workshop is offered. Contact the BCCC if your Department is interested. Biostatistics Collaboration and Consulting Core (BCCC)

WHY CONSULT WITH THE BCCC? The mission of the Biostatistics Collaboration and Consulting Core (BCCC) is to ensure that the appropriate use of statistical methodology is incorporated in research. BCCC statisticians are available for ongoing statistical collaborations and short term support to all faculty, staff, and tudents throughout the University of Miami. BCCC statisticians are available for collaboration at all stages of research including but not limited to preparation of grants and Contracts, data analysis, abstracts, and manuscript preparation. Dedicated resources within the BCCC are available to clinical and translational researchers through the Research Design and Biostatistics Component of the Miami CTSI, with emphasis placed in the area of culturalized health research, focusing on health problems highly prevalent in ethnic-/racial-minority and medically underserved communities.
Meet the BCCC Staff
Shari Messinger, M.E., Ph.D. Associate Professor of Biostatistics Director, BCCC Hua Li, M.S. Ph.D. Assistant Scientist Biostatistician
Statistical considerations are a critical part of research investigations, and it is strongly encouraged to obtain biostatistical collaboration as early as possible. Early collaboration in development of research ideas increases the quality of research, the likelihood of meeting study objectives, and success in obtaining extramural funds. In addition to daily office hours for quick consultations and guidance, the BCCC provides free initial meetings with investigators for each project. Monthly seminars and/or workshops, in addition to weekly small group roundtable discussions, centered around a particular topic, are also provided by the BCCC. These seminar/workshops and roundtables are announced to all the UM community via the Research and Clinical listservs.
