CONGRATULATORY FACULTY ANNOUNCEMENTS Miller School Shares Highlights of Report of the Task Force on Racial Justice The purpose of the Task Force on Racial Justice was to develop strategies and actions to address issues of systemic racism at the Miller School to create a sustainable culture of inclusion and diversity that supports racial justice. Roderick K. King, M.D., M.P.H., senior associate dean for diversity, inclusion, and community engagement, has overseen the task force along with Nanette Vega, Ed.D., assistant dean for the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement.

Miller School’s Dr. Tatiana Perrino Appointed as University of Miami’s Associate Provost for Faculty Development Tatiana Perrino, Psy.D., a professor in the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s Department of Public Health Sciences, will be responsible for supporting faculty development at the University of Miami’s 11 schools and colleges, as well as other important units, such as the University’s libraries. Together with the University of Miami's faculty affairs team, Dr. Perrino will be using faculty feedback to enrich and guide development initiatives.


The International NeuroHIV Cure Consortium Names Dr. Adam Carrico as a Distinguished Collaborator The International NeuroHIV Cure Consortium (INHCC) facilitates scientific exchange among investigators in a diverse array of fields and leverages all aspects of the research portfolio through multidisciplinary studies that focus on acute and chronic HIV infections and HIV remission studies. Adam Carrico, Ph.D., professor and director of the Division of Prevention Science and Community Health in the Department of Public Health Sciences, is working closely with the INHCC team to test for methamphetamine metabolites on stored urine samples to validate self-report measures.

COVID-19 Infection is Associated with Economic Disadvantage in a Particular Geographic Area, Study Finds According to a new ecological study led by the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, understanding how social determinants of health play a role in COVID-19


infections could help with the development of strategies to prevent the spread of the virus. The cross-sectional study—published in the November issue of the Journal of General Internal Medicine—was led by Ana Palacio, M.D., M.P.H., professor of clinical medicine in the Miller School’s Department of Public Health Sciences, and Leonardo Tamariz, M.D., M.P.H., professor of medicine in the Miller School’s Department of Medicine.

New Study Examines Loneliness, Mental Health, and Substance Use among U.S. Young Adults during COVID-19 In a new study led by the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, public health experts found that there have been elevated levels of loneliness, depression, anxiety, alcohol use, and drug use among young adults during COVID-19. The findings— published in the November issue of the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs—underscore the importance of prevention and intervention to address these public health challenges. The study was led by Viviana E. Horigian, M.D., M.H.A., professor, Renae D. Schmidt, research associate, and Daniel J. Feaster, Ph.D., professor, all from the Department of Public Health Sciences.


Miller School’s Public Health Graduate Students Play Key Role in Uniting for Action’s New Vaccine Considerations Project During the Fall 2020 semester, Uniting for Action virtually visited a course filled with eager public health graduate students at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The organization—founded in 2017—is facilitating the strategic and collective actions required to effectively address current and future health challenges faced in local, national, and global communities. Now, students are involved in the organization's new Vaccine Considerations Project, which will help gather and share information to address health concerns and considerations regarding the new COVID19 vaccines.

GLOBAL HEALTH IMPACT


Caribbean Nations Explore New Ideas, Directions to Recover from Pandemic Owing in part to its geographic terrain, the Caribbean has fared relatively well from a health standpoint in managing the COVID-19 virus, yet the region has suffered economic devastation due to its historic dependence on trade and tourism, according to experts from the University of the West Indies, one of 14 member colleges of the Hemispheric University Consortium.


Public Health Experts Asses the Pediatric Anemia Care Experience of Mothers from Arequipa, Peru Public health experts with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, University of California San Francisco, and Catholic University of Santa Maria in Peru, led a Frontiers study to assess the pediatric anemia care experience of mothers from Arequipa, Peru. They interviewed 14 mothers in Arequipa to understand their perspective on pediatric anemia, as well as to understand how they perceive its prevention and treatment measures.

Miller School Leadership Role in Global Climate Symposium The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, in partnership with the CLEO Institute, led the 10th annual Empowering Capable Climate Communicators Symposium. The virtual event, held from November 19 to 21, attracted approximately 600 attendees from around the world.

ASPPH’s Anthony (Tony) Mazzaschi Engages in Q and A with Public Health Faculty and Students The Office of Graduate Programs at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s Department of Public Health Sciences featured Anthony “Tony” Mazzaschi, Chief Advocacy Officer at the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH), for its fourth virtual Emerging Public Health Topics Seminar of the fall semester.
