NIH Awards Dr. Hemant Ishwaran Grant to Develop New Machine Learning Framework The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) has awarded Dr. Hemant Ishwaran, Ph.D., M.Sc., professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences, a five-year grant to develop a new super greedy trees (SGTs) framework that will enable investigators to address challenging big data problems. Dr.


Ishwaran is also the Director of Statistical Methodology and Director of Graduate Studies in the Division of Biostatistics in the department.

New Funding Will Support the Continuation of FINISHING HIV: An HIV Protection, Diagnosis and Treatment Network for Latinos Mariano Kanamori, M.A., Ph.D., assistant professor in the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s Department of Public Health Sciences, is the recipient of the 2021 Gilead Award that will support the continuation of a project titled, “FINISHING HIV: An HIV protection, diagnosis, and treatment network for Latinos”. The award— offered through the Research Scholars program of Gilead Sciences, Inc.—supports research that improves patient lives and advances scientific knowledge in areas of unmet medical needs.

World Health Organization Dashboard of COVID-19 Recommendations The recommendations of the Panel for a Global Public Health Convention (GPHC) have been included in the World Health Organization (WHO) Dashboard of COVID19 related Recommendations. The original report titled 'A global public health convention for the 21st century' outlines ten recommendations on how the world can better prevent and respond to infectious disease outbreaks and is published in the Lancet Public Health journal. NATIONAL AND LOCAL IMPACT


With Love, Grandma Survivors, experts discuss how to Dr. Sara Mijares St. George is leading the development of an app, called “Con Cariño, Abuelita” (With Love, Grandma) prevent genderfor Hispanic-American cancer-surviving based violence grandmothers and their adult daughters. The app looks to address healthy eating and physical activity, as well as familybased approaches through culturallyrelevant stories, virtual “tours” to home countries, and a time capsule feature that records survivors’ wisdom on healthy lifestyles and overcoming obstacles.

The Institute for Advanced Study of the Americas recently held a discussion to discuss strategies on how to prevent gender-based violence and implement a framework of prevention, healing and justice. Dr. Felicia Knaul, professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences and director of the Institute for Advanced Study of the Americas at the University of Miami, moderated the panel discussion.

Dr. Mariano Kanamori Presents Progreso En Salud Intervention at the

Sylvester Researchers Investigate the Risks


2021 Inter-CFAR HIV of Being a Woman and Women Firefighter Symposium Dr. Alberto Caban-Martinez in the Dr. Mariano Kanamori, assistant professor in the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s Department of Public Health Sciences, has presented an abstract and poster presentation on the Progreso En Salud public health intervention at the 2021 Inter-CFAR HIV and Women Symposium. The objective of the preliminary phase of Progreso En Salud is to examine the acceptability of the messaging and the feasibility of implementing an online social networkbased PrEP intervention during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Department of Public Health Sciences served as senior author of a new paper that outlines women firefighters’ attitudes towards their on-the-job health risks. The findings shed light on the issues that women firefighters face and could help guide future public health policy and research. The paper has been published in the December edition of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Exposure.
