WELCOME TO THE FALL 2021 SEMESTER
Dear Students, We are looking forward to seeing you as you join or resume Graduate Programs in Public Health in Fall 2021! At the Department of Public Health Sciences, we had planned for an in- person semester, while allowing students that are not local or are challenged by personal
circumstances to join remotely into our course sessions. However, we are actively monitoring the current COVID 19 pandemic in Miami Dade. New cases are on the rise in South Florida, with new variants gaining strength. Our faculty are assessing planned attendance of students for their courses, as they gather information and collate it with class size, occupancy, and current infection rates, to determine modality of their course offering. Modality of their course offerings could span from in- person allowing students to join remotely, to hybrid -some sessions in person and some remote, to remote. Faculty will communicate via their course syllabus, which will be released no later than August 16th, on specifics on modality of their course offering. The University of Miami is requiring Faculty and Staff to get vaccinated, allowing some exceptions. While we are not requiring vaccinations for students, I want to strongly encourage you to get vaccinated to help us contain the public health crisis. Vaccination is available for students at the Coral Gables Campus. If you have gotten your COVID 19 vaccination, please don’t forget to upload proof in MyUHealthChart. This is important, as those who choose not to be vaccinated or do not upload proof of vaccination are required to undergo COVID 19 surveillance, with regular testing. Please note that as of today, face coverings are required for all indoor activities. The COVID 19 pandemic has challenged us to adapt and to be flexible. Returning students can attest to this as they successfully navigated their public health coursework and community- based experiences in prior semesters. Please continue to monitor communications from Graduate Programs in Public Health and from your course instructors. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions. Looking forward to seeing you soon! Stay safe,
Viviana Horigian, M.D., MHA Professor, Educator Track Director of Public Health Education Department of Public Health Sciences University of Miami

Narrative Review Examines Use of Fitbit Devices in Physical Activity Intervention Studies, Provides Key Insights Fitbit devices allow users to self-monitor their daily physical activity, including number of steps, types of physical activity conducted, amount of sleep, as well as other key details. In intervention studies, the devices have been used as both a measurement and intervention tool, but it is not clear how the devices are being utilized across studies, which is critical information for researchers. The use of Fitbit devices in specific age groups is also not well understood.
