COMMUNICATION DPHS STUDENTS — FALL 2021
To all DPHS students: Hope you are doing well this semester. Here is important information for wrapping up Fall and planning for Spring semesters.
DPHS Holiday Hours – FALL 2021 •

Thanksgiving break – The Department of Public Health Sciences will be closed Thursday, November 25 and Friday, November 26, 2021 in observance of Thanksgiving Day and of Native American Heritage Day. Please note, that some staff may be out of their offices sporadically that week. Winter Holidays – The Department will also be closed the week of December 24 – 31. Please plan ahead. There will be limited staff and faculty as many will be on vacation before and after this closure.
Deadlines & Grades – FALL 2021 •

Plan ahead – Please submit your work as soon as possible, do not wait to the last minute as professors may not be able to review your work on a last-minute basis. Capstone & Thesis – All deadlines are firm. You are responsible to know and adhere to the deadlines and monitor your document submissions and approvals. Review the corresponding Capstone Handbook and documents or the MSPH Handbook and documents to ensure all requirements are met. We will miss Megan Garber as she was phenomenal in her role supporting, training, and advising students and leading the capstone and thesis programs so well. Please, refer to her letter for contacts. Final Grades – Faculty is required to submit all final grades by Monday, Dec 20 at 12 noon. This means they need time to review and grade your work ahead of time.
DPHS Courses Schedule – SPRING 2022 • • •
The DPHS Course Schedule – Spring 2022 latest version is in the “One-StopShop.” For registration purposes Winter, Spring, and Spring Break courses are all part of the “Spring” term. IMPORTANT: o DPHS Winter courses – You must be enrolled prior to the course start date (EPH 612-Global Health starts Monday January 3 at 9:00 AM, and EPH 653 – Occupational Health starts Monday January 10 at 9:00 AM). Professors typically send emails the week prior to course start via Blackboard and only registered students will receive it. These are compressed courses that require work ahead of time and after the end of class. o DPHS Spring Break courses – These courses (EPH 639-Vector Borne Disease, and EPH 684-16 – Epidemiology of Aging) are scheduled during UM Spring Break from March 14 – 18, 2022. However, the last

day to drop these courses is Feb 2. Note that these are compressed courses that require work ahead of time and after the end of class. Keep this in mind as you plan your course load for spring term. There are two new “Special Topics” (EPH 684) courses this semester – do not confuse them: o EPH 684-15 – Special Topics: Epidemiology of Aging (Spring break week) o EPH 684-16 – Special Topics: Disaster and Emergency Public Health (Full spring term)
Meeting your Academic Faculty Advisor •

It is important you meet with your academic faculty advisor to ensure you are on the right track with your program plan and courses and with your Capstone or Thesis requirements. This meeting is required to release the advising hold in your CaneLink account.
CaneLink Enrollment and Holds • • • •
Registration for Spring 2022 is open in CaneLink. You must pay attention to the HOLDs in your account. All students have an “Advising Hold.” After meeting with you, your advisor will contact Ms. Carlen Duncombe to release the advising hold so you can enroll in the selected courses. All other holds – financial, international, health, social security, missing documents, etc. – are the student’s responsibility to resolve. You may visit ‘Canes Central website for information on holds, registration, financial aid, inquiries, forms, etc.

Department of Public Health Sciences Names Diana Hernández Payano Inaugural Recipient of the Resiliency Scholarship Award Program Diana Hernández Payano, a first-year M.S.P.H. candidate in the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s Department of Public Health Sciences (DPHS), is the inaugural recipient of the DPHS Resiliency Scholarship Program. The scholarship program’s aim is to support a resilient MPH or MSPH student in their effort to address community or global public health issues through their graduate studies.

UM Spring 2022 Academic Calendar The Department of Public Health Sciences follows the University of Miami Academic Calendar. Students must adhere to all deadlines and important dates specified in the academic calendar. EASTERN-ATLANTIC STUDENT RESEARCH FORUM
The Eastern-Atlantic Student Research Forum (ESRF) is an international symposium held at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine (UMMSM) in Miami, Florida. In addition to formal presentations, the forum includes the informal exchange of scientific ideas among students and faculty preceptors, the encouragement of student-initiated research, and the professional development of future leaders in biomedical research. Virtual Conference Dates: February 12-13, 2022. Public Health Sciences Master's Students will have their own section at the 2022 ESRF Conference. HOOKAH RESEARCH STUDY Are you a hookah smoker interested in paid research? If you are a hookah smoker at age > 21 years, you may qualify for this confidential study that aims to develop hookah-specific pictorial health warning labels.
