LETTER FROM THE INTERIM CHAIR
Dear Students, Alumni, Faculty, and Staff, As an alumnus of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine's public health programs (M.P.H.’98 and Epidemiology Ph.D.’06), I am very pleased and proud to see the enthusiastic response that our department and community partners have had over the past few months in addressing the emerging challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Among involvement in other initiatives and programs such as U-TRACE, SPARK-C and the IDEA Exchange, students, alumni, faculty, and staff at the Department of Public Health Sciences have tirelessly helped in a myriad of ways. They have worked on projects that have included the development of a tool to track the population response to social distancing and mobility, assessing the psychosocial impacts of COVID-19 on young adults (i.e., loneliness and risk of anxiety, and depression), the use of models to analyze the impact of adaptive COVID-19 containment strategies, the application of a new pandemic stress index, the use of mobile devices to provide support to those with mental health and substance use disorders, and strategies to boost communication with the hard-of-hearing while wearing a mask. We were willing to leave our comfort zone to serve the community, particularly populations at higher risk, such as older adults, minorities, and those with comorbid conditions. Thank you. We remain resilient and committed to this public health moment together.
Hermes Florez, M.D., M.P.H., Ph.D. Interim Chair, Professor, and Director of the Division of Epidemiology and Population Health Department of Public Health Sciences, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine
