Department of Public Health Sciences Hosts Open House for Prospective Students The Miller School of Medicine's Department of Public Health Sciences held an open house at the Shalala Student Center, where prospective students learned more about the opportunities that are available in the department, as well as in the Miller School. Faculty, staff, current students, and alumni presented information on the department's five divisions, gave an overview of the degree programs that are available, as well as engaged in Q&A sessions with attendees.
Dr. Roderick King Named Senior Associate Dean for Diversity, Inclusion and Community Engagement Roderick King, M.D., M.P.H., assistant dean of public health education and director of the M.D./M.P.H. program, was appointed as senior associate dean for diversity, inclusion and community engagement. Dr. King will introduce innovative strategic initiatives to advance the diversity and inclusion programs and goals at the Miller School of Medicine, which has a strong commitment to addressing health disparities and health inequalities.
UHealth Primary Care Clinics Treating Opiate Use Disorders as a Chronic Health Condition UHealth — the University of Miami Health System — is one of six health systems in the United States to house an office-based addiction treatment (OBAT) program. In the UHealth OBAT clinic, opiate use disorder is managed in the same way other chronic health conditions are — with confidential, medication-assisted treatment, counseling, appointments with specialty providers, and linkage to other vital health and social service resources.
Public Health Researchers Present at the 19th Annual National Hispanic Science Network International Conference Several graduate students, faculty, and staff from the Miller School of Medicine's Department of Public Health Sciences and the University of Miami's School of Nursing and Health Studies attended and presented at the National Hispanic Science Network's 19th Annual International Conference this year. The three-day conference, held from Oct. 9-11, 2019, focused on exploring life adversities and their impact on the development of chronic diseases among underrepresented minorities.

David J. Lee and Dr. Nicole L. Marrone Approved for a PCORI Engagement Award for Project on Building Research Capacity on Hearing Loss Interventions in Hispanic/Latinx Communities David J. Lee, Ph.D., professor at the Miller School of Medicine's Department of Public Health Sciences, and Nicole L. Marrone, Ph.D., CCC-A, associate professor at the University of Arizona, will serve as co-principal investigators on efforts to build capacity on hearing loss interventions among the Hispanic/Latinx community and provide evidence to address the decision-making challenges they face when seeking interventions.
The Florida Education Fund Awards Dr. Guillermo "Willy" Prado with Presidential Award The Florida Education Fund (FEF), an organization that provides an avenue to ensure that educational advancement is possible for minorities, honored Guillermo "Willy" Prado, Ph.D., dean of the University of Miami Graduate School and professor of public health at the Miller School of Medicine, with a presidential award. FEF annually honors a scholar who has shown commitment and outstanding support to students in the McKnight Doctoral Fellowship program with the award.
Dr. Olveen Carrasquillo Honored as a ‘History Maker’ for Hispanic Heritage Month The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities honored Olveen Carrasquillo, M.D., M.P.H., professor of medicine and public health sciences and chief of the Miller School of Medicine's Division of General Internal Medicine, as a "History Maker" in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month. The social media campaign highlights Hispanic researchers who have made important contributions to the Hispanic community and aims to build awareness of minority health and health disparities research in the United States.

The All of Us Research Program — a National Institutes of Health initiative — was one of the 70 public health organizations that participated in a Capstone Career Meet and Greet that was held by the Department of Public Health Sciences. The event gave graduate students the opportunity to engage with public health leaders, as well as to learn more about the job and volunteer opportunities that are currently available within each organization.
