Public Health’s Dr. Audrey Harkness Receives Grant to Expand HIV Community Outreach Program The National Institute of Health has awarded Dr. Audrey Harkness, research assistant professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s
Department of Public Health Sciences, a new grant that will add a new component of research to her ongoing study to develop and pilot test and evaluate new strategies to increase the reach of HIV-prevention and behavioral health services to Latino gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM).

New Funding Will Support Research on the Relationship between Neighborhood Greenness and Brain and Vascular Health The National Institute on Aging of the National Institutes of Health have awarded Scott Brown, Ph.D., research associate professor, and José Szapocznik, Ph.D., professor and chair emeritus, of the Department of Public Health Sciences and Tatjana Rundek, M.D., Professor and Vice Chair of Clinical Research in the Department of Neurology a four-year, $3 million study to investigate the relationship between block-level greenness, cognitive decline and vascular outcomes.

New Grant Will Support Patient Empowerment and Early Integration of Palliative Care for Hispanic/Latino Patients with Metastatic Cancer The National Institutes of Health has awarded Patricia Moreno, Ph.D., Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Lead of Evidence-Based Survivorship Supportive Care at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, a new K01 grant to improve early integration of palliative care among English- and Spanish-speaking Hispanic/Latino patients with metastatic cancer.

DPHS INSIGHT ON THE COP26 SUMMIT
University of Miami faculty and staff members provide their insight on the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of Parties — also known as the COP26 Summit — which took place in Glasgow, Scotland from October 31st to November 13th, 2021. Professors Naresh Kumar and Joanna Lombard in the Department of Public Health Sciences share their perspectives on climate change and the resolutions of the COP26 Summit.

HOOKAH RESEARCH STUDY
The Department of Public Health Sciences is working on a study to develop pictorial health warning labels to communicate the health risks of waterpipe smoking to users, particularly youth. Participants will be asked to complete a brief, confidential survey and attend one focus group session via Zoom. Eligible participants who complete the study will receive compensation for their time and effort.
