University health economist heads new commission to examine inequities in global cancer care Dr. Felicia Knaul, professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences and director of the Institute for Advanced Study of the Americas, will lead the new Lancet
Commission on Cancer and Health Systems. The commission is focused on improving access to cancer care and to novel treatments for the disease worldwide.

Dr. Jose Szapocznik Provides Family-Based Treatment Workshops on Behalf of the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime Dr. Jose Szapocznik, chair emeritus and professor of public health sciences at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, has provided capacity-building workshops on family therapy to professionals throughout Latin America on behalf of the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

Pfizer and Moderna Vaccines Found to Protect Firefighters and Frontline Workers Researchers at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine have found that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are 91% effective in preventing COVID-19 infections in fully vaccinated firefighters, health care workers and other frontline/essential workers. They also found that the vaccines are 81% effective in partially vaccinated workingage adults.

Wastewater testing provides early detection of COVID-19 University of Miami researchers have developed a novel strategy to help predict COVID-19 outbreaks up to four days before a person tests positive for the disease by sampling wastewater flowing from campus buildings. The COVID-19 wastewater surveillance project is funded by a $5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health.

Sylvester Researchers Explore Cancer Risks at Surfside Condo Collapse Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center's Firefighter Cancer Initiative (FCI), led by FCI founding director Dr. Erin Kobetz and deputy director Dr. Alberto Caban-Martinez, launched an environmental and exposure monitoring program to protect rescue workers from health hazards at the Surfside condo collapse. FCI also delivered critical cleaning and safety supplies, including respiratory masks, baby wipes and decontamination kits.

Miller School Comprehensive Diabetes Center Concludes Clinical Drug Trials
NIH Chooses Miller School to Head Project for Its Safe Return to In-person School Initiative
The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine participated in the Glycemia Reduction Approaches in Diabetes (GRADE) — A Comparative Effectiveness multi-center clinical trial, marking the end of a 10-year effort aimed at finding the most effective medications for treating Type 2 diabetes.
The Miller School’s project titled, “Maximizing Child Health and Learning Potential: How to Promote a School Culture of Safety in the Era of COVID19,” partners with the Miami-Dade County School District to develop and test feasibility of a national urban school COVID-19 testing protocol and health education and vaccine confidence initiative.

Researcher examines Face masks protect extreme heat, multiple against aerosolized sclerosis link toxins from algal blooms study finds Dr. Naresh Kumar, professor of environmental health in the Department of Public Health Sciences, found that clinical visits by multiple sclerosis patients to Veterans Affairs medical centers increased during months with warm weather and high humidity. Findings from the research study have been published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.

UM Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science researchers found that face masks and air conditioner filters with high filter performance ratings are effective at reducing exposure to toxic algae in the air. They found that face masks filtered out 90% of toxic-containing particles, while AC filters filtered out 2090%, depending on the filter performance rating.

Researchers awarded $3 million from National Institutes of Health Dr. Guillermo Prado— vice provost for faculty affairs and professor of public health sciences— and his research team have been awarded a NIH grant for an effectiveness-implementation trial of the eHealth Familias Unidas for Mental Health intervention. The parenting intervention will be implemented in 18 clinics across South Florida.

Dr. Mariano Kanamori Named Recipient of the 2021 Gilead Award Dr. Mariano Kanamori, assistant professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences, has been named recipient of the 2021 Gilead Award. The funding will support the continuation of a project titled, “FINISHING HIV: An HIV protection, diagnosis, and treatment network for Latinos”.
Dr. Alberto Caban-Martinez Named Assistant Provost for Research Integrity and Deputy Director for MD/MPH Program Dr. Alberto Caban-Martinez, associate professor of public health sciences, has been named Assistant Provost for Research Integrity at the University of Miami and Deputy Director of the MD/MPH joint degree program at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

Final Self-Study Report to the Council on Education for Public Health The Graduate Programs in Public Health will participate in a review for program accreditation by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) from October 7 to 8, 2021. The final self-study materials are posted on the Department of Public Health Sciences website. Thank you for your participation in this important activity. Accreditation by CEPH means that we have rigorously evaluated the quality and content of our instruction, research and service programs and have successfully met CEPH’s published criteria. We look forward to posting the results of this accreditation process in 2022.
