BIOSTATISTICS Biostatistics is the branch of statistics responsible for interpreting data to solve problems in biology, medicine, and public health. Biostatisticians are interested in how data, population studies, and health intersect.
ENVIRONMENTAL & PUBLIC HEALTH Environmental health examines the role the environment plays in the health of individuals and populations. Environmental scientists address the health implications that environmental risk factors (e.g., water and air pollutants) pose to population health.
EPIDEMIOLOGY Epidemiology is the study of trends, patterns, and determinants related to disease in populations. Epidemiologists design and implement studies which provide evidence to help understand the causality and solutions to preventing disease.
HEALTH SERVICES & POLICY Health services and policy is a multidisciplinary field concerned with the delivery, quality, and cost of health care. Experts in this field are interested in the complex structures of health care delivery, legality and ethics, and policy processes designed to improve health care access among populations.
PREVENTION SCIENCE & COMMUNITY HEALTH Prevention professionals work in partnership with communities to understand the risk and protective factors that must be targeted to improve health and prevent disease. They then use that understanding to develop, adapt, evaluate, and disseminate preventive interventions.
MPH
MSPH

BroaDEN horizons THE CAPSTONE EXPERIENCE
As students complete their coursework, they are trained to apply evidence-based public health practices to transform the health of communities — next door and across the world. The capstone program is a vital component of our MPH that allows you to apply your knowledge and solve realworld public health challenges. It provides a dynamic and fulfilling opportunity for you to immerse yourself into communities with complex health issues in Miami or throughout the world. Students are encouraged to build their capstone program to support their academic and professional interests as they transition into their careers as public health professionals. We have the partnerships and connections to facilitate your placement into a field organization that matches your passion and career aspirations. You will have a capstone manager, faculty advisor, and field preceptor to ensure that your experience is a meaningful contribution to public health. At the University of Miami, your capstone opportunities are only limited by your imagination.

Julia Amundson Assessed the emergency preparedness for global sporting events Julia examined the readiness and capacity of local hospitals for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brasil. She worked with Hospital Estadual Adão Pereira Nunes’ emergency department and the Hospital Estadual Alberto Torres’ trauma center. She assisted with the training of the hospital staff and analyzed emergency preparedness plans.

Larissa Lester and Bryanna Schwartz Implemented HIV testing and education at a local shelter Homeless and unstably housed women are disproportionately at risk for HIV infection. Homeless shelters represent a unique opportunity to administer testing and prevention programs. Larissa and Bryanna developed an intervention that provides a valuable model for future prevention programs tailored to homeless women.
sudan & uganda Haiti Alison Moody Assessed the viability of applied community health worker programs
Ian Bishop Assessed cellular phone health interventions among rural women
Alison explored existing community health worker programs in rural areas of Africa and examined the feasibility of adapting different models to new areas. She engaged in problem solving during a polio outbreak and worked with tribal leaders to solve serious health issues caused by trash disposal and flooding problems.
Ian completed his capstone with the University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, where he assessed if the growing availability and increased use of mobile telephones in rural settings provided an innovative mechanism for health information delivery.

The PhD + MD career is challenging and rewarding. It offers opportunities to apply medical knowledge at Joint degree applicants must separately a population level by advancing knowledge through apply to and be accepted by both programs. research and developing new treatments for diseases.
JURIS DOCTORATE (JD) Students in this program are passionate about improving public health through legal and policy changes in order to reduce health disparities, increase access to healthcare, and improve public health policy.
PHD PROGRAMS PhD in Prevention Science & Community Health The PhD in Prevention Science and Community Health gives individuals the necessary expertise and interdisciplinary background to contribute to 21st century prevention and community health research. Students are trained in both traditional and innovative areas of prevention science. These include etiology, intervention design and evaluation, innovative data collection and analyses, community-based participatory research, and implementation science. Our faculty are experts in cultural diversity and health disparities. They are focused on acculturation; cultural predictors of health disparities; and efficacious methods, strategies, and programs for reducing health disparities locally, nationally, and internationally. The research of the faculty span multiple disease outcomes and populations. Outcomes include substance use, HIV, cancer, diabetes, obesity, and depression. Populations of interest include Hispanic families, Haitian American women, men who have sex with men, and male couples.
PhD in Biostatistics
PhD in Epidemiology
Data pervades nearly everything we do, including the way we evaluate disease prevention and health promotion.
The PhD in Epidemiology trains individuals in epidemiological research methods and its applications to public health. It prepares individuals to become independent researchers and to obtain skills for successful careers as epidemiologists.
We have developed pioneering, cuttingedge methodologies for analyzing genomic data which allow researchers to separate true biological signals from the unrelated information. The PhD in Biostatistics prepares you with innovative theory and methods that enable students to provide solutions to complex scientific issues in public health, medicine, and sciences. Our graduates are expert biostatisticians who lead collaborative teams of investigators addressing key public health questions in academia, industry, and government. Our program is unique in its emphasis on the integration of statistical reasoning to real world applications. We work closely with scientists in other medical and public health settings to solve statistical challenges. We train students to conduct and publish original research on the theory and methodology of biostatistics.
As a research-focused degree, students are given the skills necessary to approach health problems to generate consequential research questions and use the most appropriate epidemiological methods to address them. The methodologically rigorous training comprises classroom education and guided research. Students have unique opportunities to conduct collaborative research with clinical departments and research centers within UM’s Miller School of Medicine. Interdisciplinary research opportunities also exist with nearby health care settings such as the Miami Veterans Affairs Healthcare System, Jackson Memorial Hospital, and UM’s Sylvester Cancer Center. Our key research areas include: chronic disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS, occupational disease, and health disparities.

“I was inspired to study public health in order to find a way to impact people on a grander scale. This means affecting not just the individual, but also the family, community, and society.”
“The support of the faculty and staff helped me redirect my future academic plans, expand my perspectives, and introduced me to a wide range of inspiring people. Through the MPH program, I obtained an internship at the World Health Organization and a position at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention upon graduation.”
“I grew up in a country where access to adequate health care is a luxury. As a child, I witnessed the loss of life in Haiti due to the lack of proper medical care and limited access to medical facilities. I have a strong desire to improve the health of individuals through medicine and also participate in the development of healthier communities.”
