Every performance tells a story through language, movement, sound, or images. As we move through the UMS K-12 Education season, we invite educators and students to think about how the stories of live performance have an impact on our lives, and how different narratives resonate with each individual. During the 2016-17 season, UMS K-12 programs will explore storytelling through School Day Performances, pre- and postshow in-class workshops, and educator professional development workshops. Get ready for an electrifying year!
UMS (also known as the University Musical Society) is one of the oldest performing arts presenters in the country, committed to connecting audiences with performing artists from around the world in uncommon and engaging experiences. With a program steeped in music, dance, and theater, we believe in the power of world-class performing arts to inspire, transform, and connect individuals with transcendent experiences. UMS was selected as one of the 2014 recipients of the National Medal of Arts, the nation’s highest public artistic honor. The National Medal of Arts is awarded annually by the president of the United States “to those who have demonstrated a lifetime of creative excellence.”
UMS School Day Performances School Day Performances are music, theater, and dance presentations carefully chosen from the complete season of UMS performances. Structured in an unaltered, but condensed, format (60 minutes), School Day Performances allow students to experience the same artistic material that is performed for the general public. Through pre- and post-show workshops, learning guides, and in-classroom consultation, UMS works with teachers to help prepare students to attend School Day Performances. Through live performances, students develop creativity and critical thinking skills, which reinforce a variety of curricular connections and spark curiosity in new ideas. Bringing your class to a UMS School Day Performance supports classroom content, opens new pathways for intellectual and artistic exploration, and develops life skills that only arts education can provide for our children. We hope UMS lives beyond the walls of our venues and becomes part of your thinking, your memories, and your lives.

Former STOMP member and 2015 MacArthur “Genius” Grant awardee Michelle OCT Dorrance honors tap dance’s uniquely beautiful history by pushing the form rhythmically, aesthetically, and conceptually. The innovative choreographer creates an imaginative world of sound, movement, and the forces that join them. Returning to UMS after his wildly popular 2014 School Day Performance, Jake Shimabukuro NOV combines the qualities of a long line of virtuoso ukulele players with modern rock to create a sound that’s uniquely his own but still firmly grounded in Hawaiian tradition. He has redefined the ukulele, incorporating elements of thoughtful, sophisticated arrangements with spontaneous improvised passages. In addition to traditional ukulele material, his singular approach combines elements of jazz, blues, funk, rock, bluegrass, classical, swing, and flamenco.

A Far Cry is a self-conducted chamber orchestra that brings together 17 young professional musicians. In APR this concert specially designed for K-12 students, A Far Cry joins forces with the nine-member Grammy Award-winning virtuosic vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth to create a thrilling sonic experience that stirs the imagination and inspires musical curiosity. This School Day Performance will explore how music can evoke characters and narratives even when there is no storyline. The concert features music by Prokofiev, Ted Hearne, and Caroline Shaw. Selected students will be invited on stage to participate in this interactive experience, collaborating with the artists to improvise stories as expressed by the music.
Ping Chong + Company creates theater that crosses boundaries of identity, community, and form. FEB Beyond Sacred is an interviewbased theater production that explores the diverse experiences of young Muslim New Yorkers. The five participants are different in many ways and come from a range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds, but they share the common experience of coming of age in a post-9/11 New York City, at a time of increasing Islamophobia. The goal of this performance is to use theater and personal testimony to foster greater understanding among Muslim and non-Muslim communities throughout the United States. This production contains strong language.

This hit Ukrainian folk-punk quartet stirs up a mesmerizing sound that melds traditional Ukrainian folk music, MAR African grooves, Eastern colors, and a contemporary, trans-national sensibility that the band calls “ethno-chaos.” The name DakhaBrakha is authentic, traditional, and original all at the same time. In “old” Ukrainian it means “give/take.” Accompanied by Indian, African, Arabic, and Russian traditional instrumentation and unique vocal arrangements, DakhaBrakha creates a powerful, refreshing vision of Eastern European roots music, fulfilling their mission of bringing Ukrainian melodies to the hearts and consciousness of younger generations worldwide.

Bringing your students to a School Day Performance is not only a fun field trip, but a way to make classroom curricula come to life. And why stop there? For select School Day Performances, and at no additional charge to your school, a UMS teaching artist will visit your classroom and facilitate a 30-45 minute artsintegrated experience that is directly connected to school curricula and the performance. Including music, theater, puppetry, video, or dance, your students can actively explore the art form and themes they will encounter during the performance right in your classroom. After the performance, the UMS teaching artist returns to your classroom to lead students in reflection and discussion. Through these workshops, your students will deepen their experience as audience members and critical thinkers, while collaborating and connecting with each other, growing artistically and academically, and embracing their creativity in the classroom.
“Thank you for making these workshops possible for my students, it makes me happy to give my students the experience that I would want my own children to have and this program allows us to do that. My students have had little experience with the performing arts, and by having these workshops they were mentally prepared to meet the characters of the story. Beacon Day Treatment
All in-class workshop scheduling will be arranged with UMS by email within the month prior to the scheduled performance date. Ticket orders must be confirmed and the 50% deposit paid prior to the date of the workshop. All classroom workshops are subject to availability. All teachers receive a copy of lesson plans once workshop dates are confirmed. 8

• Tickets may be requested at any time! • School Day Performance tickets are $7 for each student, teacher, or chaperone, unless otherwise noted (allow at least one chaperone per 15 students). Additional discounts may be available for schools where at least 50% of students qualify for Free or Reduced Lunch.
