Everyone Has A Story!

Why Tell Stories?

We experience life as a narrative. Every time we speak about ourselves, our past experiences, our hopes, and our dreams, we are telling a story. Sharing stories helps us to feel, to understand, and to experience the world we live in. Storytelling is more than just a way of exchanging information and extending ideas; it is also a way to reach out and connect with people. Stories not only link the worlds of classroom and home, but also extend us into the world beyond our immediate community. Stories provide a common thread that unites people and bridges the space between cultures.

All performances tell a story, whether that’s through language, movement, sound, or images. Narratives have been shared throughout history to educate, entertain, and preserve cultures. As we move through the K-12 Education Season, we invite teachers and students to think about how the stories in live performance have an impact on our lives, and how narratives resonate differently with each individual. Throughout the year, UMS K-12 programs will explore storytelling through our School Day Performances, pre- and post-show in-class workshops, and educator professional development workshops. Get ready to share your story!

Good storytellers capture attention. They help listeners visualize characters, understand dialogue, and connect to emotional details that bring a story to life. In this hands-on workshop, teachers JAN develop their ability to tell stories more effectively through the expressive use of voice and movements. Participants’ increased skills will help develop students’ story comprehension as teachers add character gestures, create lines of dialogue, and describe sensory details. As evidenced in classroom after classroom, these are powerful strategies for developing literacy skills for students who range from advanced to not yet fluent readers. This workshop is ideal for Reading Specialists, Elementary, English Language Learners, and Special Education teachers. This hit Ukrainian folk-punk quartet stirs up a mesmerizing sound that melds traditional Ukrainian folk MAR music, African grooves, Eastern colors, and a contemporary, transnational sensibility that the band calls “ethno-chaos.” The name DakhaBrakha is authentic, traditional, and original all at the same time. In “old” Ukrainian it means “give/take.” Accompanied by Indian, African, Arabic, and Russian traditional instrumentation and unique vocal arrangements, DakhaBrakha creates a powerful, refreshing vision of Eastern European roots music, fulfilling their mission of bringing Ukrainian melodies to the hearts and consciousness of younger generations worldwide.
