DAY 1 7:30 – 8:30 a.m.

Arrival | Bell Tower on Double Drive UMW staff will provide you with a parking permit and direct you to park.

7:30 – 8:45 a.m.

Check-In | The “Link” between Randolph and Mason Halls Students will receive all check-in materials and their room assignment for the evening.

9:00 – 9:25 a.m.

University Welcome | Dodd Auditorium, George Washington Hall Students and their guests will be welcomed by Dr. Doug Searcy, Vice President for Student Affairs, and other administrators. Hear about the UMW mission, values, and the community of honor.

9:25 a.m.

Students will follow Orientation Leaders (OLs) and depart for their programming sessions.

Academics at UMW | Dodd Auditorium

Academic Expectations | Lee 411

There are many resources available to help your student succeed academically. This session will introduce you to the proven methods that will help them get the most out of their studies and you’ll also learn about where students can go for assistance. Pre-professional programs (pre-law, education, prehealth, business) will also be highlighted.

The level of work typically expected at UMW may be different than you have experienced before. This session is designed to help you learn more about expectations for reading, writing, research, and presentation assignments. Preprofessional program requirements (prelaw, education, pre-health, business) will also be highlighted.

Life at UMW | Dodd Auditorium

Placement Testing | Various Locations

Student Life directors will discuss the out-of-class opportunities for fun and experiential learning. You will also learn about dining services, housing procedures, and other campus services.

Math, Spanish, German, French, & Latin All incoming first-year students will complete placement testing. These tests ensure that academic advisors help students create a successful schedule of coursework. OLs will take you to your testing location. There is an alternate activity for those not testing.

Lunch | Great Hall Chemistry Placement Testing | Various Locations

10:45 – Noon

Noon – 12:45 12:45 p.m.

Students planning to take Chemistry as part of their degree program or in pursuit of a pre-health professional field will be required to complete a Chemistry placement test. These students will be identified in the Academic Expectations Session. Students will meet OLs at the Great Hall at 12:45 p.m. to be escorted to testing. Upon completion of the test, students can attend concurrent sessions.

Students and guests are invited to choose one session within each time slot. Sessions marked with an asterisk (*) occur more than once throughout the afternoon. Need to visit a campus office? UMW Education Abroad: Go Global* | Lee Hall, Room 411 Growing numbers of UMW students are taking advantage of the opportunity to study abroad in a variety of ways. This session, hosted by the Center for International Education, will acquaint you with the everincreasing range of options that UMW is making available for overseas study, research, or volunteerism. Building Your Nest: Financial Processes | Lee Hall Room 412 From financial aid to billing cycles to student account charges – learn more about the financial ins and outs at UMW. Getting Involved!* | Trinkle 106A It’s easy to be a leader at UMW! There are over 130 active student organizations that program events for their members and for the campus community. Disability Resources | Trinkle 138 UMW offers a broad range of services and assistive technology. Each student may require a different approach in order to achieve equal access to programs and services. Walking Tour: Reflecting on Campus History & Civil War Artifacts* | Outside George Washington Hall If you have completed essential business with the University, this faculty-led tour is a unique opportunity to learn more about the Mary Washington campus. 2:00 – 2:45 p.m. CONCURRENT SESSIONS, ROUND 2 Choose one of several sessions to attend. Residence Hall Open House* | Assigned Residence Halls The first-year residence halls (Alvey, Virginia, Randolph, Bushnell, Jefferson, and Russell Halls) will be open for you to view and see representative rooms. A Residence Life staff member or student will be present in the building to direct you. Special Programs | Trinkle 138 Find out more about the living-learning communities and themed housing offered in the residence halls; how to sign-up for the pre-orientation programs; and about the RISE peer mentoring program offered by the James Farmer Multicultural Center. Honors Program | Trinkle 138 This program is for those students who have been accepted into the Honors Program at UMW or are considering applying for the program in December 2013 (requires a 3.2 UMW GPA and completion of an Honors course). By participating in the Honors Program, students have the opportunity to engage in rigorous coursework, interdisciplinary seminars, strong internship experiences, extended research and creative projects, and intriguing community service endeavors. Internships: Bridges to Your Future* | Lee Hall 412 It’s never too early to start planning for your future. The Office of Academic and Career Services will introduce you to UMW’s active internship program and the variety of services offered to help students plan for future employment and careers.

Students – Evening Activity | Seacobeck Hall Meet your OL outside of Seacobeck Hall for evening activities that include Campus Life skits and a casino night social. The evening will end in the residence hall.

6:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Families and Guests – Reception | Seacobeck Hall, Faculty-Staff Dining Hall Mingle with faculty and staff while eating dessert-the perfect end to the day!

8:30 - 9:30 a.m.

Family and Guest Community Fair and Breakfast Join us for a continental breakfast and take the opportunity to visit information tables from UMW and the Fredericksburg communities. Representatives include local banks and various UMW offices and departments.

9:45 – 10:45 a.m. Campus Wellness and Safety Learn more about the services and security measures that support student safety and well-being. 11:00 - Noon

Families as Partners Enjoy a presentation from staff about how to help your student prepare for life at college. Then hear from a panel of students who are ready to answer your questions about life as an Eagle.

Noon - 1:00 p.m. Your Next Steps Join our Dean of Student Life as he discusses what’s next for you as you support your new Eagle. Hear about move-in, Welcome Week, Family Weekend, and other UMW events and traditions. Wear your Eagle Pride – Enjoy the “mini-Bookstore” where UMW spirit items are available. Lunch –“On your own!” at Eagle Village. Your student will be directed to meet you in Eagle Landing at the completion of Academic Registration. Your student will be directed to meet you in Anderson at the completion of Academic Registration.

Check-Out | Randolph and Mason Residence Halls Keys MUST be returned at the entry desk in the lobby as you depart. You will pick up your luggage at the Eagle Landing desk after Academic Registration. Students attending Orientation without additional guests may pick up luggage at Randolph and Mason.

8 - 9 a.m.

Student Breakfast | Great Hall

9 - 10 a.m.

Being an Eagle: A Guide to Life on Campus | Great Hall Orientation Leaders will discuss with students various topics such as meal plans, EagleOne, textbook reservation, and housing.

10 - 10:45 a.m.

Students Talking to Students | Great Hall Current students form a panel to answer your questions about about life at UMW and living in Fredericksburg.

11 a.m.

Academic Registration | Various Locations Orientation Leaders will escort students to their Academic Registration. Registration should be quick, and everyone should be done by 2 p.m. After Registration, meet your family and guests at the Anderson Center.

Student luggage is located at the Eagle Landing desk beside the Eagle Landing Parking Deck. Luggage is available for pick up between 12 - 2 p.m. 6

Pick up your EagleOne Card. If you submitted your photo early, you will receive this at check-in. If you haven’t submitted a photo, make sure you stop by the EagleOne Card Office in Lee Hall 110 between 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Sign-up for Alert UMW alert.umw.edu. This is a system that allows the University to contact you during an emergency through e-mail and text message.

Register for Family Weekend at umw.edu/familyweekend and mark your calendar for September 20-22, 2013. You don’t want to miss it!

Explore Fredericksburg! From Eagle Village to our Historic Downtown, there is so much to see and do. Trolley Tours leave from the Visitor Center downtown at 10:30 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 1:30 p.m. , and 3:30 p.m. (additional cost is associated). Call (800) 979-3370 to reserve a seat!
