Head Coach Ashley Cozart

Ashley Cozart is entering her 10th season as head softball coach at North Alabama and is the sixth coach in the school's history after taking over the program in July of 2013. She enters the 2023 season with a 508-183 overall record, including a 317-138 mark at UNA. Following a successful stint leading the program in Division II, including the 2016 national championship, Cozart guided the Lions through the transition to the NCAA Division I level. UNA did not have a losing record in any of the four provisional seasons before reaching full status prior to the 2023 campaign.

In 2022, Cozart reached a pair of coaching milestones. She won her 300th game at UNA on April 3, with a 13-5 mercy-rule home victory over Jacksonville. Later in the season, a 3-2 home win over Central Arkansas gave Cozart her 500th career victory. the Lions rallied from a 2-0 deficit to post the extra-inning victory on May 1st. After her first five seasons resulted in five straight trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament, Cozart continued to guide the Lions to new heights during their

first season in Division I. UNA posted a 26-20 record in its first Division I season in 2019, earning a No. 4 seed in the ASUN Conference Tournament after being picked to finish seventh in the preseason coaches' poll.

Megan Garst was named ASUN Pitcher of the Year after setting a school record with a 0.83 ERA on the year. The junior also led the ASUN in strikeoutsper-seven innings, and earned a first team all-conference and third team all-region honors. She was a two-time ASUN Pitcher of the Week and became the first pitcher in UNA history to toss consecutive no-hitters, blanking Liberty and Jacksonville in consecutive games.

Other ASUN honors for UNA in its first Division I season included Veronica Westfall (Second Team), Lexie Harper (All-Freshman Team) and Alex Brown (All-Academic).

With only two trips to the NCAA Tournament in school history prior to her arrival, Cozart guided the Lions to five straight tourney berths in her first five seasons at the helm of the program at the Division II level.

The 2016 season culminated with the NCAA Division II National Championship. The run included the program's first GSC (regular season and tournament) title in 29 seasons. UNA also won NCAA South 1 regional and Super-Regional champions along the way to clinch a spot in the 2016 Women's College World Series in Denver, Colorado.

At the championships, the Lions went 5-1, posting a 4-1 victory over Humboldt State in the title game to cap a 60-7 season. During the run, UNA broke or tied 30 team and individual records at the single-season and career levels. the Lions also broke or tied four GSC records and also set a new attendance mark for the year.

Cozart has coached 47 all-conference, 28 all-region and 13 All-America selections during her career. In the classroom, the Lions have also posted program-high grade point averages and landed team's second-ever Academic All-American with Harlie Barkley in 2016. Amy Carden received the 2016 Elite 90 Award, given to player at the championships with the highest GPA.

Head Coach Ashley Cozart

Following the 2016 season, Cozart was named GSC Coach of the Year. The NFCA also named Cozart and assistant coach Whitney Hawkins the Regional and National Coaching Staff of the Year. UNA's 2018 team also won the GSC title and hosted the NCAA South 2 Regional.

Cozart came to UNA after winning more than 81 percent of her games as head coach Lindsey Wilson College, where she guided the Blue Raiders to the NAIA national tournament four straight seasons. She had a 191-45 record, including a 50-10 mark in 2013.

Under Cozart, Lindsey Wilson won four straight Mid-South Conference regular season and tournament titles. She was also a 3-time MSC Coach of the Year from 2010-12.

After being hired at LWC in 2009, Cozart had an immediate impact on

the program as the Blue Raiders increased their win total from 26 to 47. LWC made it to pool play in the NAIA national tournament 3 straight seasons before reaching bracket play in 2013, ending the season with a 5-1 loss to No. 1 Auburn-Montgomery. LWC set a school record for wins in a season and produced 7 all-conference selections, including the MSC Pitcher of the Year.

During Cozart’s tenure, the Blue Raiders were consistently ranked in the NAIA Top 25 poll, including their highest ranking of No. 12 in the final poll of the 2013 season. Individual player honors at the conference and national levels were also abundant during Cozart’s time at the helm of the program. The Blue Raiders produced one MSC Player of the Year, four Pitchers of the Year and 17 first team all-conference selections. LWC also had six NAIA All-Americans.

Prior to arriving at Lindsey Wilson, Cozart served one season as the assistant coach at Lee. The Flames produced a 39-14 record and a share of the SSAC regular-season championship in 2009. Prior to Lee, Cozart spent two seasons as head coach at Antioch High School.

As a student-athlete, Cozart helped Trevecca Nazarene to a pair of Top-5 finishes at the NAIA World Series. She was named TranSouth Conference Freshman of the Year in 2004 and went on to be a 4-time all-conference and all-region pick. She broke the school career record for hits and doubles and is ranked in the program’s top five in RBI, home runs, batting average and runs scored. In 2014, she was selected to the Trevecca Athletic Hall of Fame.

She graduated from Trevecca in 2007 and is married to Shaun Cozart. The two have two sons, Cooper and Tucker.

Leo III

UNA once again boasts the only live Lion mascot in the country living on campus.

On July 22, 1974, former UNA president Dr. Robert M. Guillot brought a 35-pound lion cub to the campus and Leo spent the next 14 years “roaring” the school to victory. The original Leo died on Jan. 20, 1988, and a great outpouring of support from the Shoals community resulted in Leo II being brought to UNA in July of 1988.

Leo II lived in the compound that once housed the original Leo and grew to a weight of more than 600 pounds at eleven years of age. In 1997, Leo II was selected as the nation’s“Second Best Mascot”by Sports Illustrated. He died in February of 2000.

Leo III and Una, born on November 18, 2002, and resided on the campus in the 12,764 square-foot George H. Carroll Lion Habitat. Una passed away in June of 2020 after a brief illness.

Approaching his 10th birthday, Leo III is exhibited seven days a week from approximately 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. (weather conditions permitting), unless they are appearing in local venues.

University Profile

The University of North Alabama, established in 1830 as LaGrange College, became, in 1872, the first state-supported teachers college south of the Ohio Riverand one of the first co-ed colleges in the nation. UNA has developed into a regional university providing quality educational opportunities for students from the three-state region of Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee.

North Alabama’s academic role has expanded through the years. Bachelor’s degrees are offered in majors in the colleges of arts and sciences, business, education and nursing and allied health. Pre-Professional preparation for medicine, dentistry, optometry, podiatry, pharmacy, law, agriculture and forestry, engineering, veterinary medicine, medical technology and other allied health professions is offered. Various master’s degrees are offered in the arts and sciences, edication and business fields.

North Alabama was the first major university to offer a four-year degree program in commercial music. Majors have interned in record industry offices in Nashville, New York, Los Angeles, London, Stockholm, and nearby Muscle Shoals. That program has since been expanded with the development of the UNA Entertainment Industry Center and the addition of an entertainment industry management major. UNA is one of 11 schools nationwide offering an undergraduate degree in industrial hygiene. Foreign language, nursing,

business, and science students also have opportunities to study abroad. Numerous faculty and staff members hold positions of distinction in various national, regional and state professional organizations. Many have written books and/or published articles in newspaper, magazines and professional journals. The Journal of Legal Economics is published at UNA.

Various centers have been established at North Alabama to serve its constituency. Operated by faculty and staff, they give undergraduate and graduate students opportunities for research and public services.

These centers include the Occupational and Environmental

Health Laboratory. Its scientific research has attracted national and international attention in the health field. The Geographic Research Center, in cooperation with the National Geographic Society, has increased the profile of geography in the state and has opened doors for students to have hands-on participation in maping and demographics research for various governmental agencies. Science faculty and students teach and study marine biology-related courses at Dauphin Island Sealab near Mobile, Alabama.

UNA also houses the NW Alabama Education Research and Inservice Center, which provides inservice training for elementary and secondary educators in a six-county

region. UNA has the only state university-operated kindergarten and grammar school, which affords education students a professional development laboratory experience in teaching.

Serving a nine-County region, the Small Business Development Center provides information, counseling and assistance to small businesses or to people planning to start small businesses. The Rare and Endangered Species Research Center personnel are conducting research on several endangered species in the region. The Wellness Research and Service Center studies and develops wellness, exercise, nutrition, stress management, health education counseling and environmental support programs.

The University of North Alabama works closely with various southern universities and many local, state and federal agencies on a myriad of projects and activities.

Supporting the faculty are the extensive resources of the Collier Library system, which is also a federal records depository. It is computerized and linked into various library loan research networks. Collier Library also houses several collections, including the television and film scripts and other works of actors Dr. George Lindsey and Dr. Ernest Borgnine.

UNA has developed a national following in recent years with the development of the George Lindsey/UNA Television and Film Festival, which attracts several industry luminaries to camous.

UNA students excel in academics, student activities and athletics. Often they are recognized nationally for their achievements in specific areas. In recent years , football and basketball teams have won national championships.

UNA is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The colleges of business, education andnursingarenationallyaccredited, while several departments in the College of Arts and Sciences are nationally accredited.

The University of North Alabama’s alumni are equally successful. Among them are a Pultizer Prize winner for literature and one for editorial cartooning, two Alabama governors, a Texas governor, numerous members of the U.S. Congress, thousands of educators, national business and industry CEOs and internationally-renowed sculpter, a National Geographic photographer and special assistant to the President of the United States.

Lion History and Honors

The softball program at the University of North Alabama began in 1983 under the direction of Ande Jones and was the pace-setter for the rest of the Gulf South Conference in the early years.

When the GSC began awarding championships in women’s sports in 1982, softball was one of the sports added by the league schools. For the first three years of the program, UNA and the GSC competed in slow-pitch softball, with the Lions winning the league’s first GSC softball title in 1983 with a 27-4 mark.

The Lions posted a 59-41 record during those three seasons, before UNA and the GSC switched to fastpitch in 1986 and began competing at the NCAA Division II level.

In 1986, the first season of fastpitch softball, UNA posted a 16-10 overall record and won the GSC title with an 8-4 win over Mississippi College in the championship game.

The following year, the Lions and Lady Choctaws met again in the GSC title game, with UNA again prevailing 12-3.

The Lions finished that season at 20-11 for their third 20-win season in the first five years of the program, and followed with a 21-10 record in 1988.

UNA’s fast-pitch record for the last 21 seasons stands at 407-484, and the Lions have produced numerous All-GSC and Academic AllGSC performers. Michele Logan was the school's first three-time All-GSC pick. She also earned Academic All-GSC honors three straight times.

In 1999 Jodi Johnson became the Lions first four-time All-GSC performer.

After the 1999 season, the Lions produced a 118-151 record over the next five years before having a breakout season in 2005. UNA produced its best season ever, going 36-20 and returned to the GSC tourney seeded No. 3 in the East Division.

Despite having only two seniors on the roster, the Lions broke or tied 15 team and individual school records in head coach Jeremy Reece's fourth year at the helm.

The 2006 season proved to be even better for the Lions as Reece guided the team to its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament. After finishing the season as the No. 2 seed in the

GSC East Division, UNA advanced to the South Region Tournament, where it went 1-2 to complete a 40-20 record.

Three players were named first team All-GSC, including Jessica Liddy, who earned the honor for the third straight season. Liddy's honors did not end there, however. The junior was also named first team, All-South Region and went on to become the softball program's first All-American after earning 2nd-team honors from the NFCA.

In 2009, the Lions missed the GSC tournament but set a new school record with 369 strikeouts by the UNA pitching staff. Junior Jennifer Sexton tied a school record after striking out 203 batters on the year.

2023 SOFTBALL MEDIA GUIDE • page 26
Members of UNA's 1987 Gulf South Conference champion softball team were (in no particular order) Hope Allen, Debbie Byers, Beth Harris, Cathy Jones, Michele Logan, Jill Robertson, Kim Specer, Veronica Starr, Lori Stockset, Kelli Terrell, Kelly Varnell and Amy Watkins. The Lions were coached by Ande Jones.

Lion History and Honors

Jason Anderson took over the program in 2013 and led the Lions back to the NCAA Tournament in his only season at the helm. The Lions posted a 40-20 record and set new single-season team records for most RBI, most at-bats and most hits. Callie Steadman set a new record wtih 26 doubles on the year.

Ashley Cozart took the program over in 2014 and guided the Lions to their first-ever return trip to the NCAA Tournament. UNA went 3818 with the team hitting a schoolrecord 61 homers.

After another return trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2015, the Lions rolled to a historic season the following year. UNA went 60-7, capturing the 2016 NCAA Division II National Championship. After cruising to a GSC regular-season title, the Lions captured thier first league title in 29 seasons by winning the GSC Tournament at home. UNA then went on to win the

South 1 Region and Super-Regional championships to earn a trip to the Division II Women's College World Series in Denver. At the championships, UNA went 5-1, knocking off Humboldt State 4-1 in the title game to claim the ultimate prize.

Hillary Carpenter was named tournament MVP after tying an NCAA record with five pitching victories at the event. Brooklynn Clark, Reagan Tittle and Courtney Shields were also each named to the all-tournament team.

Clark was also named first team All-America by the NFCA and was selected as the D2CCA National Player of the Year. The Lions also produced multiple All-South Region and All-GSC members. Harlie Barkley was named an Academic All-American while Amy Carden received the NCAA Elite 90 Award at the championship event.

For the year, UNA broke or tied 34 school and GSC records at the single-game, single-season and

career levels.

The Lions completed their final season at the Division II level in 2018 with a 46-7 mark, advancing to the program's sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament and winning it's fourth GSC championship.

The 2019 season marked North Alabama's first as an NCAA Division I institution and member of the ASUN Conference. The Lions posted a 26-20 record, including a 10-10 mark in ASUN play, advancing to the conference tournament as the No. 5 seed. UNA went 1-2 in the postseason.

A global pandemic halted the 2020 season before ASUN play began, UNA finished its third year of the Division I transition with a 16-7 record.

During its final year in the transition, UNA went 40-20 and received its first Division I bid to a post-season tournament. The Lions went 2-2 at the NISC in Colorado, defeating Tarleton State and UNLV.
