History was made in May when the Northern Medical Program produced its first 23 graduates. Delivered by the UBC Faculty of Medicine in collaboration with UNBC, the NMP now has its first student from the Bulkley Valley: Jessica Maciejko of Houston started in the program this past year and is planning to be part of the Class of 2011. Many northern communities have signed on to support students like Jessica and have raised $6 million for the Northern Medical Programs Trust. To date, the communities of the Bulkley Valley have contributed nearly $200,000 to the Trust.

CONGRATULATIONS GRADS! 830 students graduated from UNBC this year, making history as the University’s largest graduating class ever. Convocation ceremonies took place in Prince George, Quesnel, Fort St. James,Terrace, New Aiyansh, and Prince Rupert.
Going for Gold Lisa Emmerton of Hazelton isn’t preparing for Beijing or the 2010 Games, but she’s a gold medalist just the same. Lisa won the GovernorGeneral’s gold medal for academic achievement this year as the top student completing a graduate degree (master’s or PhD) from UNBC. Lisa graduated with a master’s degree in English and her thesis explored the emerging field of media studies; particularly how “The Simpson’s” and “King of the Hill” reflect American culture.

UNBC Scholars Awards First-year students Luke Spooner of Hazelton, Eric Miller of Smithers, and Randi Woodbeck of Houston all have the chance to earn a UNBC degree tuition-free after receiving UNBC Scholars awards this past year. As long as they maintain a B average, UNBC Scholars can have their tuition waived for an entire bachelor’s degree program.

What’s Happening at UNBC
The new Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre UNBC’s limited edition, 16-month wall calendar is now on sale.
Northern Sport Centre Measuring nearly 150,000 square feet, the new Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre has surely been a big addition to UNBC’s Prince George campus. With a three-court gym, two indoor fields, the longest indoor track in BC, and a variety of other services, the NSC is the premier facility of its kind in the region and is regularly used by thousands of students and residents. It was officially opened in September.
Basketball Champs
2007/2008 provincial champions
UNBC’s women’s basketball team went undefeated this season in their new home, including a stunning victory in front of 2,000 boisterous fans to capture the BC championship. They ended up finishing 6th at the national championship in Nova Scotia. This coming season, the UNBC men’s team will host the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association national basketball championships at the Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre.
UNBC Facts

Support Students, Celebrate the North 2009 is UNBC’s 15th anniversary and the University has produced a wall calendar to celebrate and raise money for scholarships. The calendar features stunning photos of the northern BC landscape, illustrating the close relationship between UNBC and northern British Columbia. The calendars can be purchased for $20 throughout northern BC, including the New Hazelton tourist booth, or by calling (250) 960-5750.
Canada’s Green University Society’s increased focus on the environment couldn’t be better for UNBC. The University has the highest rate of students in environmental programs among Canadian universities and a research profile that is geared toward the environment, natural resources, and resource-based communities. UNBC is part of the $90 million Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions and work is underway to make the Prince George campus the first university campus in Canada to be heated with renewable energy.
Student & Alumni Successes UNBC is an award-winning university. Students recently captured top research awards from the Canadian Association of Geographers, the top two delegate awards from a national Model United competition in Ottawa, the participation award from western Canada’s premier student business competition, and the largest national scholarship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. A UNBC grad also recently scored the top PhD award from the Canadian Society for Chemistry.
