First-year students Stanley Brown of Hazelton, Andrea Vandergaag of Smithers, and Gillian Rourke of Houston all have the chance to earn a UNBC degree tuition-free after receiving UNBC Scholars awards this past year. As long as they maintain a B average, UNBC Scholars can have their tuition waived for an entire bachelor’s degree program.

What’s Happening at UNBC A New President Even before his first real day on the job, UNBC’s new president saw much of northern BC. George Iwama attended convocation ceremonies in various communities as part of a 3,200km tour of northern BC. He is interested in strengthening relationships between the University and the region and plans to be a frequent visitor to the Bulkley Valley. Dr. Iwama comes to UNBC from Carleton University and is a specialist in zoology. He will be officially installed as UNBC President on Friday, October 16th at 2pm at the Prince George campus. Everyone is welcome. Please confirm your attendance by emailing patenauj@unbc.ca.

UNBC Milestones: 2008/09 • UNBC achieved its highest ranking ever in the annual Maclean’s ranking of Canadian universities, placing second among 21 small universities. • UNBC started a $15 million bioenergy program that will reduce UNBC’s carbon footprint by up to 85% and serve as a platform for regional R&D.

• A national study resulted in UNBC being named a Research University of the Year. Over the past five years, no university in western Canada has seen a greater increase in research funding. Last year, UNBC topped the $100 million mark in research funding to date. •U NBC researcher Laurie Chan

received the largest research grant in UNBC history, attracting $11 million over the next decade to study the effects of environmental contaminants on aboriginal health.

• The Northern Medical Program received a national award from the Society of Rural Physicians of Canada for producing rural doctors at the highest rate in the Society’s history.

UNBC Facts • 4,177 students in academic programs. • 1,980 students in Continuing Studies courses. • 869 scholarships and bursaries worth $2 million.

Regional Research on Sleep Disorders Mary-Ann Speirs, a third year Nursing student in Terrace, went door-to-door through Kitsumkalum, Kispiox, Gitanmaax, Gitsegukla, Kitwanga, and Gitanyow, surveying residents as part of a study on sleep disorders in Aboriginal people. MaryAnn’s intimate knowledge of the local communities was vital to the study, which confirms that sleep-related disorders are more common among indigenous than non-aboriginal populations.

Local Involvement with Medical Program While one student from the region recently graduated from the Northern Medical Program, another just joined the program this past year. Amy Johnson of Houston was a member of only the second group of NMP grads and is currently completing a residency in family practice in Prince George. She has been “replaced” by Stephen Breen, a UNBC grad and resident of Smithers who recently completed his first year of medical school. The Northern Medical Program is part of UBC’s Faculty of Medicine and delivered in collaboration with UNBC and Northern Health. A number of local communities are partnering with UNBC to raise funds in support of future health care professionals: Smithers is a member of the Northern Medical Programs Trust and Houston and Hazelton have recently fulfilled their community pledges. To date, about $6 million has been raised.

• 900 students graduated in 2009, bringing the total number of UNBC alumni to nearly 7,800.

Interested in studying at UNBC?

• More than half of UNBC alumni live and work in northern BC.
