UNBC Highlights 2010

UNBC in the Bulkley Valley

National Champions

Planning for the Interface Planning for the zone of contact between Crown lands and settled lands (known as the “interface”) was the subject of a conference coordinated by UNBC and the Bulkley Valley Research Centre and held recently in Smithers. The event was the first of its kind to address interface wildfires, rural residential development, outdoor recreation, amenity migration, tourism, logging, mining, and respect for the rights of First Nations.

The UNBC men's basketball team scored UNBC's first national championship this year after going 17-1 during the regular season and capturing the provincial title as well. UNBC produced BC players of the year for both men's and women's basketball, a pair of academic allCanadians, a coach of the year award, and the country's top individual honour – All-Canadian Across All Sports – won by Inderbir Singh Gill.

Huckleberry Mines UNBC MSc student Allan Carson is investigating revegetation and soil enhancement strategies to reclaim the Huckleberry copper mine near Houston, BC Carson is evaluating the current challenges to reclaiming mined landscapes and restoring ecosystems to pre-mine conditions.

A Shrinking Footprint UNBC is actively implementing a $15 million bioenergy program at the Prince George campus that could give the core buildings the smallest carbon footprint of any Canadian university by this time next year. The projects – a biomass gasification system and a wood pellet system – will reduce UNBC's dependence on fossil fuels by 85% and serve as a platform for applied research and education.

New Chancellor

www.unbc.ca/programs

A native of Prince Rupert who went on to establish one of Canada's most successful technology companies is UNBC's fifth Chancellor. John MacDonald co-founded MacDonald Dettwiler and led the company until his retirement in the late 1990s. He is now the CEO of a BCbased solar company and is a champion of BC's potential leadership in renewable energy. The Chancellor is the ceremonial head of the University and officially grants degrees at Convocation.

Anniversaries and Awards This June, UNBC is celebrating two anniversaries: the 10th anniversary of the health care rally in Prince George that led to the establishment of the Northern Medical Program and the 20th anniversary of the creation of UNBC by the Government of BC. Both serve to underline how far UNBC has come in a relatively short period of time. In fact, UNBC has again been named by Maclean’s as the best small university in western Canada (and #3 nationwide) and the National Post has named UNBC a Research University of the Year. Meanwhile, Math professor Jennifer Hyndman won a national award for excellence in teaching and Margo Greenwood was named Academic of the Year for her groundbreaking report for UNICEF on Aboriginal health and child poverty in Canada.
