Managing for Tomorrow
Jeremy Belyea
UNBC 2012 Highlights
UNBC and the Village of Burns Lake recently hosted a community forum to discuss multiple ways for developing the area in the wake of this year’s devastating mill explosion. Members of the public joined representatives from UNBC and local leaders for a discussion on community, resource, and economic development. The forum titled, “Managing for Tomorrow,” was organized by UNBC political science professor Gary Wilson.
Jeremy Belyea, BA First Nations Studies ’05 and MEd Counselling ’08 of the Lake Babine Nation, is the chairperson of Young Indigenous Professionals—a national advisory group within the Aboriginal Human Resource Council. The aim of both organizations is to increase aboriginal inclusion in the workforce. Jeremy is currently working towards the creation of a national mentorship network for aboriginal students.
Provincial Champs Headed to the Big Leagues UNBC has said “good bye” to its participation in the Canadian college athletics league by winning the provincial championship in both men’s and women’s basketball. Next season, the UNBC Timberwolves will begin their first season as a member of the Canada West conference in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS)—playing against the top athletes in the country.
Physical Therapy in the North
UNBC 2012 Nechako Valley & Lakes District
A joint effort by UNBC and UBC has established a new clinical cohort allowing for 20 physical therapy students to complete the majority of their clinical placements in northern BC. The purpose is to expose more students to the region and address the shortage of local physiotherapists. The partnership will also enable all of UBC’s physical therapy students—80 in each class—to pursue more of their five-week clinical rotations in the north.
Bioenergy Birthday
UNBC Facts | unbc.ca/about
This spring marked the first anniversary of UNBC’s $15.8 million Bioenergy Plant, funded by the Governments of BC and Canada and featuring gasification technology from BCbased Nexterra Systems. The system has already reduced UNBC’s use of fossil fuels for heating by 89% and proven that emissions from bioenergy can be lower than natural gas. The plant serves as the primary heat source for UNBC, and also acts as a platform for education and research.
• 4,341 students in academic programs • 2,485 students in Continuing Studies • 566 students at regional campuses • 987 scholarships & bursaries worth $2.4 million • 66% of students are from northern BC

Canada’s Green University UNBC has been named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for the first time in the list’s five-year history, a distinction earned by only 50 companies across the country each year, and one of only four Canadian universities to make the list, and the only organization in northern BC.
