CONGRATULATIONS GRADS! 900 students graduated from UNBC this year, making history as the University’s largest graduating class ever. Convocation ceremonies took place in Prince George, Quesnel, Fort St. John, Fort St. James,Terrace, Gitwinksihlkw, and Prince Rupert.

UNBC Scholars Awards First-year students Vanessa Funk of Vanderhoof, Eric Carriere of Fort Fraser, Rae Marchal of Fort St. James, and Chet Mecham of Vanderhoof all have the chance to earn a UNBC degree tuition-free after receiving UNBC Scholars awards this past year. UNBC in the Nechako Valley & Lakes District Future Business Leaders

A New President Even before his first real day on the job, UNBC’s new president saw much of northern BC. George Iwama attended convocation ceremonies in various communities as part of a 3,200km tour of northern BC. He is interested in strengthening relationships between the University and the region and plans to be a frequent visitor to the Nechako Valley & Lakes District. Dr. Iwama comes to UNBC from Carleton University and is a specialist in zoology. He will be officially installed as UNBC President on Friday, October 16th at 2pm at the Prince George campus. Everyone is welcome. Please confirm your attendance by emailing patenauj@unbc.ca.

These students from Fort St. James and Vanderhoof were among the first graduates of an Aboriginal and Small Business Leadership certificate offered locally by UNBC. Funded by the Government of Canada, the program consisted of courses from the UNBC School of Business and was delivered through Continuing Studies. The program was designed to enhance the business skills of local residents and help them to either start new businesses or strengthen existing ones.

The Best

Medical Student

UNBC grad Lisa Sam scored a major achievement this past summer. She was selected among 1,200 nurses working on reserves across Canada to receive an award of excellence. She is working at the Nak’azdli Health Clinic.

Archaeology Discoveries An archaeology field school operated by UNBC on the shore of Stuart Lake at the Binche reserve resulted in exciting moments for the students taking part. The excavation led to the discovery of several glass beads which may have arrived as a result of pre-European trading with natives from the east where European settlements were taking shape. The annual archaeology field schools serve two purposes: contribute to the historical record of northern BC and educate local students in archaeological methods.

UNBC Milestones: 2008/09 • UNBC achieved its highest ranking ever in the annual Maclean’s ranking of Canadian universities, placing second among 21 small universities. • UNBC started a $15 million bioenergy program that will reduce UNBC’s carbon footprint by up to 85% and serve as a platform for regional R&D.

• A national study resulted in UNBC being named a Research University of the Year. Over the past five years, no university in western Canada has seen a greater increase in research funding. Last year, UNBC topped the $100 million mark in research funding to date.

University of Northern British Columbia

3333 University Way

UNBC grad Jocelyn Unger of Burns Lake recently completed her first year of studies in the Northern Medical Program. The NMP is part of the UBC Faculty of Medicine and delivered in partnership with UNBC to help increase the number of physicians working in rural communities.

First Nations Sustainability UNBC professor Stephen Dery is working with the Stellat’en First Nation near Fraser Lake to make the community more sustainable. Dr. Dery is holding an information session at the end of September to increase awareness of how individuals can reduce their energy use at home by making some simple changes such as improving insulation. Rural First Nations communities such as the Stellat’en often have different sustainability challenges. For example, all of the houses in the community are heated with wood.
