What’s Happening at UNBC Tourism Research

A New President

Haida Gwaii and the coastline around Prince Rupert provided the perfect classroom for a group of UNBC students this past summer. The group participated in a research project on tidal plants for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Outdoor Recreation and Tourism Management professor Pat Maher says data collected will go into a global database used to protect endangered ecosystems.

Even before his first real day on the job, UNBC’s new president saw much of northern BC. George Iwama attended convocation ceremonies in various communities, including Prince Rupert, as part of a 3,200km tour of northern BC. He is interested in strengthening relationships between the University and the region and plans to be a frequent visitor to the North Coast. Dr. Iwama comes to UNBC from Carleton University and is a specialist in zoology. He will be officially installed as UNBC President on Friday, October 16th at 2pm at the Prince George campus. Everyone is welcome. Please confirm your attendance by emailing patenauj@unbc.ca.

National Award UNBC grad Sarah de Leeuw, who grew up on Haida Gwaii, won a national CBC literary award for an essay she wrote about the burning of the Columbus Hotel in Prince George and the effect it had on the people who lived there. Sarah is currently a professor in the Northern Medical Program.

UNBC Milestones: 2008/09

New North Foundation Local politicians from Prince Rupert, Stewart, Queen Charlotte, Port Edward, and Port Clements were among the 60 northern BC municipal leaders who participated in a workshop on the New North Foundation in May. The Foundation has been conceived as a “knowledge portal” that would more strongly connect researchers to the most pressing economic development needs and opportunities of regional communities and industry. A feasibility study for the New North Foundation is underway.
