OCHA Liaison Office in Brussels In November 2007, OCHA established a Liaison Office in Brussels with the objective of strengthening co-operation with the European Union and other institutions based in Brussels, Strasbourg, Vienna and others European capitals. The Liaison Office promotes the adoption and use of United Nations principles and operational standards in humanitarian assistance, supports advocacy for the humanitarian principles, monitors ongoing humanitarian policy debates and influences policy decision making on humanitarian affairs. The office also facilitates knowledge exchange and represents UN-OCHA in relevant European Union institutions (Commission, Parliament and Council), NATO, the Council of Europe, United Nations agencies, the ICRC, NGOs, think tanks and academic institutions based in Brussels. BLO also inputs to OCHA’s liaison with Brussels-based organisations by supporting OCHA participation in high-level events and collaboration between different branches of OCHA New York and Geneva with various institutions through bilateral meetings on geographical (such as the response to the 2010 Haiti Earthquake) or thematic (such as civil-military relations) issues. The bi-annual visit of the USG/ERC since the establishment of the BLO shows the strategic importance of the office and contributes strongly to the Brussels team’s work. Links -
