Ta-Nehisi Coates - A Deeper Black: The Meaning of Race in the Age of Obama UNC Charlotte Distinguished Speakers Forum 7:00 pm, Cone University Center, McKnight Hall Author Ta-Nehisi Coates is one of the most perceptive voices in black America today and one of the best young American writers, period. Coates’ style is a diamond-hard compression of language, informed equally by modern politics, pop culture, street vernacular, and his father’s vast library of foundational black literature. The Beautiful Struggle, his critically-hailed debut, is a tough, touching memoir of growing up in West Baltimore during the age of crack. It’s already a stone cold classic. In his speech Ta-Nehisi Coates delves into the complicated, conflicted and hopeful state of black America today. This event is free and open to the public with a meet and greet reception to follow at 8:00pm.
