UNC Asheville Mission Statement
UNC Asheville is a selective, public liberal arts institution. UNC Asheville’s Intercollegiate Athletics Program reflects the attitudes and values underlying the University’s overall mission: academic excellence, diversity, equity, integrity, service, and accomplishment. The UNC Asheville athletics program contributes to this liberal arts culture in two ways. First, athletics programs foster a sense of community and pride by fielding NCAA Division I teams and developing talented student-athletes who successfully represent UNC Asheville in competition and reflect the University’s commitment to overall excellence. Accordingly, the athletics program encourages an atmosphere of respect for self and others through the development of ethical conduct, sportsmanship, leadership, and citizenship and provides equitable opportunities for all students and staff, including women, minorities and indivduals of all sexual identities. Second, the program provides an additional campus experience for capable students to grow and develop academically, personally, socially, and athletically. This experience promotes institutional commitment and pride on the part of students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

Before coming to UNC Asheville, Smith was one of the top high school coaches in the nation at T.C. Roberson HS in Asheville. He coached the Rams program for 28 years and led the school to three 3-A state titles in 1983, 2000 and 2002. The Rams won 14 conference titles during his tenure. “Tom Smith is a proven leader with tremendous desire who will direct our baseball program forward,” stated Director of Athletics Janet R Cone upon Smith’s hiring. “He has the knowledge of the game of baseball and is a proven recruiter. “We are confident that Tom Smith will get the job done with our baseball program in the classroom and the community,” stated Cone. “We are equally as confident he will lead our program to being just as competitive on the field.
Smith had 20 players drafted by major league teams during his time at Roberson. The list includes pitcher Darren Holmes who went to pitch 17 years in the major leagues, current left-hander pitcher Chris Narveson T.C. Aaron Rembert Kenny Smith
21 Assistant Coach 33 Assistant Coach Former UNC Asheville pitcher Aaron Rembert returns to his alma mater to begin his first year as an assistant coach with the Bulldog program. Rembert had served as the top assistant coach at nearby Mars Hill College for the past four years. He was one of the best pitchers ever at UNC Asheville as a member of the Bulldog program from 2000-2004. “I’m very pleased to have Aaron join our staff,” exclaimed UNC Asheville head coach Tom Smith. “Aaron enjoyed a great career at UNC Asheville and did a marvelous job coaching at Mars Hill. He comes highly recommended from various people in college baseball. We’re glad Aaron has come home.” During his Mars Hill career, Rembert guided the pitching staffs to the all-time lowest team ERA in Mars Hill history. He coached the Lions all-time wins leader (Nick Tracy) and all-time saves and ERA leader (Charlie Harrison). Rembert was the third base coach during the record setting 2008 season when the Lions set multiple offensive school records including most runs scored, RBI, doubles, batting average, on-base percentage, and sacrifice flies. He also served as Mars Hill’s recruiting coordinator, head coach of the Junior Varsity squad, and was in charge of the strength and conditioning program. Rembert was both a starter and reliever during his time at Asheville. He is the school’s all-time leader in wins with 24 and third in appearances with 86. In his freshman year, he went 9-5, and the nine wins is the second-most in school history for a season. Rembert was named as a Freshman All-American following the 2000 season for his work on the mound. “I’m really excited to be back at UNC Asheville,” stated Rembert. “I appreciate the four years I had at Mars Hill where I learned a lot about coaching college baseball. “This is a great opportunity to be back at my alma mater and work for a coach like Tom Smith,” added Rembert. “We have a lot of work to do but I’m looking forward to getting started.” After playing at UNC Asheville, Rembert signed a professional contract with the River City Rascals of the Frontier League. He also played summer league baseball with the North Adams Steeplecats of the New England Collegiate League (2003), Mat-su Miners of the Alaska League (2002), and the Lenoir Oilers of the Southern Collegiate Baseball League (2001). During his stellar career at Maiden High School (NC), Rembert was the State 1-A Player of the Year in 1999. During the 1999 campaign, he was selected as the Most Valuable Player in the State Championship game, Conference Player of the Year, named an eHonorable Mention All-American, made the All-Charlotte Observer team, and named Unifour Player of the Year. At Maiden, Rembert was a two-time AllConference and team MVP as a shortstop and a pitcher. He won 20 games during his junior and senior seasons and recorded a 1.04 earned run average his senior year. Rembert and his wife Angela just had their first child Raegan Grace on February 11, 2009. Angela is a teacher at Madison County school system.

Bulldogs Enter New Era The UNC Asheville baseball team enters a new era in 2010. Tom Smith, a legendary high school baseball coach in the Asheville area, begins his first year as the Bulldogs head coach this year. Smith isn’t a stranger to UNC Asheville as he served as a volunteer assistant in 2008 and as a parttime assistant last year. He was named to replace Willie Stewart, who resigned after last year’s 9-42 season, after the school did a nation-wide search last spring. Smith coached at nearby T.C. Roberson HS for 28 years and produced one of the top prep programs in the country. He guided the Rams to three 3-A state titles and won 14 conference championships. Smith had 20 players drafted by major league teams and two of them will wear major league uniforms this year. Florida Marlins center-fielder Cameron Maybin and Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Chris Narveson played for Smith at Roberson. Former major league pitcher Darren Holmes also played for Smith at Roberson. “I am extremely excited to be coaching at UNC Asheville,” stated Smith. “This is a great opportunity to build a program here. “Our attitude was great in the fall, and our guys want to do whatever it takes to win,” added Smith. “They’ve bought into what we’re trying to do and did a good job in the fall working hard and getting better. “Everyone on the roster will have a role, and hopefully everyone will understand their role,” Smith also said. “We’re going to be a team that hustles hard every inning of every game.” PITCHING The Bulldogs return some experience and depth in this crucial area. First-year pitching coach Aaron Rembert worked hard with the pitchers in the fall. Rembert is the school’s all-time leader in wins with 24 and comes to Asheville after a successful stint as an assistant at Mars Hill. “You have to have good pitching if you’re going to compete for a championship,” declared Smith. “Aaron Rembert did a wonderful with our pitchers in the fall, getting them to throw strikes, work quickly, and they showed improvement. If we can get our guys to keep getting better then we’ll be able to compete in a lot of games this season.” Heading up the returnees is senior right-hander Justin Schumer. Schumer has been used in different roles on the mound during his career. He an excellent two-way player and will start at either first base or DH when not pitching. “Justin’s worked closely with Coach Rembert and has turned the corner and has a chance to be a pro prospect,” declared Smith. “He has velocity with his fast ball and can throw it between 90 and 92 miles per hour. Justin will be

Taylor Wohlwend one of our weekend starters.” Junior Taylor Wohlwend right-hander has improved with each season and will compete to be one of Asheville’s weekend starters in 2010. “Taylor has a lot of innings of experience the past two seasons,” pointed out Smith. “He knows how to pitch. We could use Taylor as a starter either mid-week or on the weekends this year.” Sophomore right-hander Ryan Dull led Asheville in wins last season with three and showed a lot of promise as a starting pitcher as a freshman. He threw three complete games last year. “Ryan has a great deal of potential,” explained Smith. “He is a real competitor and wants to win every time he goes to the mound. Ryan is a hard worker who has good velocity on his fast ball. We’re looking for a good year from him on the mound. He’ll be one of our weekend starters.” Asheville returns experience and newcomers to the mound this year.

Senior right-hander Matt Dalby has done some good work for the Bulldogs out of the bullpen during his career. “We’ll look for Matt Dalby to continue to work out of the bullpen,” commented Smith. “He’s had some success for us over the years in that role.”

Outlook Red-shirt junior right-hander Dan Weller could fill a variety of roles this season. “Dan does a good job of throwing strikes and could maybe start or pitch in relief this year,” commented Smith. Junior right-hander Carson McLean is similar to Weller. “Carson brings us experience as both a starter and a reliever,” stated Smith. “We’re looking for him to be ready to fill both those roles this season.” Left-hander David Ricker is a red-shirt junior who could be a surprise for Bulldog opponents in 2010. “David shows some flashes of being absolutely dominating at times,” said Smith. “We just need him to throw strikes consistently and he’ll help us.” Junior Grier Harrington is a right-hander who has some potential to be a key player for the Bulldogs in 2010. “We’re expecting a lot out of Grier this season,” explained Smith. “We believe he can get a lot of big outs. He could start or come out of the bullpen.” Five freshmen will battle for time on the mound starting with left-hander Drew Spear. “Drew could be a weekend starter,” declared Smith. “He

just needs some college experience but once he gets it he’ll be a good pitcher for our program.” Left-hander Josh Coyle has potential. “Josh can throw strikes with three different pitches,” stated Smith. “We will probably use him out of the bullpen.” Right-hander Kurt Hibert is a hard worker. “Kurt provides us some depth on the mount and he’ll progress like the others with experience,” commented Smith. California product J.D. Voechting will be used out of the bullpen. “We’ll probably use J.D. in some long relief roles this year,” said Smith. Two-way player Robert McIntosh will start most of the year at second base but could be used on the mound, as well. “Robert has good velocity on his fast ball, and we could possibly use him as a closer or to get some outs during the season,” stated Smith. the line-up. He’s a good hitter who will have productive at-bats.” Sophomore Jordan Lurie and freshman C.A. Clayton are versatile players who will see playing time in 2010. “Jordan Lurie is a left-handed hitter who does a pretty good hitting the ball,” added Smith. “C.A. had a good high school career and knows how to play. “Both of these guys are valuable because they can play anywhere in the infield,” said Smith. Junior Catlin Carter is scheduled to be Asheville’s starting shortstop after spending the past two seasons at second base. Carter hit .298 last season. “Catlin has really improved his game and will be a leader, not just in the infield but on the team,” commented Smith. “We need his leadership both on and off the field.” Sophomore third baseman Cody Buch showed some real promise as a freshman before getting hurt midway through the 2009 campaign and missing most of the second half of the year. He hit .302 in 26 games played last season. “We need Cody to stay healthy this year to help anchor our infield,” declared Smith. “He put up some good numbers last season when he was healthy, and we’ll need similar production this year.” CATCHER
Schumer hit five homers, hit .277 and drove in a teamhigh 31 runs in 2009. He’s hit better than .300 twice in his career and has the potential to do that again this season. “Justin is a three-hole hitter who has some real power,” declared Smith. “We’ll play him some at first base, and he’ll be a guy who will drive some runs in for him this year.” Junior Mike Vaughn will be used at both first base and as a DH in 2010. He led the Bulldogs in homers a year ago with seven and drove in 28 runs, while hitting .237. “Mike did a good job leading us in homers a year ago and giving us some power,” commented Smith. “We just need him to be a little more consistent with his hitting this season.” Sophomore Derrick Hopkins will have some opportunities to play this season at first base. He hit .250 last year and earned 12 starts. “Derrick provides depth at first base,” stated Smith. “He gives us a left-handed bat who knows how to hit.” Freshman Robert McIntosh is scheduled to be Asheville’s starter at second base. He played shortstop in high school at NW Guilford HS in Greensboro. “As I said earlier, we’ll use Robert a little bit on the mound,” explained Smith. “However, we’ve got to have his bat in

Outlook The Bulldogs have a trio of catchers to try and replace graduated starter Reed Kreiser. Kreiser was a two-year starter for Asheville and hit six home runs in 2009. The three are junior Dan Lammers, sophomore Jonny Eaker and freshman Ian Graham. “We’re looking for someone to step us this season behind the plate,” explained Smith. “We like Ian Graham’s skills behind the plate, and he has the potential to be a very good college hitter,” stated Smith. “Dan Lammers and Jonny Eaker are solid catchers and good receivers,” Smith also said. “All three will have their opportunities this year.”
field. Graham struggled in the first part of the season with his hitting but did a great job in the last half of the year. “We hope the way Austin hit in the last month of the year carries over to this season,” said Smith. “He’s making more consistent contact and does a great job quarterbacking our outfield.” Two freshmen should provide depth in the outfield this year. They are Jacob Edwards and Leon Stimpson. “Jacob is left-handed hitter who gives us some options,” said Smith. “Leon Stimpson is quite athletic with some great speed.”
OUTFIELD In the outfield, the Bulldogs return all three starters from last season. Junior Beau Zinman tops the returnees as he hit .266 a year ago with three home runs and 24 RBI. “Beau has worked quite hard and made a lot of improvement,” explained Smith. “He knows how to hit and has some speed.” Junior right-fielder Danny Baatz hit .247 last season with 14 RBI and a home run. “Danny is one of our most improved players on the team,” said Smith. “He gives us a potent bat in the line-up. Danny gives us some versatility in the outfield as he can play all three outfield positions.” Senior Austin Graham will be Asheville’s starter in center-

BULLDOG ATHLETICS ASSOCIATION For over 30 years, the Bulldog Athletics Association has been the athletics scholarship fundraising arm of the UNC Asheville Athletics Department, but in its simplest terms, the Bulldog Athletics Association is YOU. Construction workers, doctors, teachers, lawyers, bankers, manufacturers, brokers, and technicians who are friends, fans, alumni, and countless combinations of others from Asheville, Weaverville, Arden, Hendersonville, …and places all over North Carolina, the United States, and the world. They all have one thing in common—a passion for Bulldog Athletics. While we have high expectations for conference and NCAA competition, we also have high expectations for outstanding graduation rates, personal growth, and community involvement. As a member of the Bulldog Athletics Association, you become a critical part of a successful athletics program with a tradition of developing student-athletes. We must raise funds not only to increase the amount of scholarship money we can offer but also to offset the rising costs of a college education. The confidence of knowing your investment will be maximized is one reason supporting UNC Asheville Bulldog Athletics is a great investment. UNC Asheville Athletics receives no state funding for scholarships, so 100 percent of your gift will enable UNC Asheville to recruit and retain student-athletes who will succeed in the classroom, athletics arena, and the community – following our motto:
Champions in Athletics, Leaders in Life.
“UNC Asheville is a point of pride for this community, as an alumnus and business owner. We are proud to support the athletics department and student-athletes as they represent our community and bring attention to WNC.” --Rich Davis ’93, Jan Davis Tire Store
“The athletics scholarship I received from UNC Asheville allowed me to focus solely on my academics and soccer, without being concerned about how to pay for school. I donate to the Bulldog Athletics Club now so that current and future student-athletes can enjoy the same experience I did. Being a student-athlete at UNC Asheville was one of the best experiences of my life and the values and lessons I learned have helped me in my professional career and my personal life. Go Bulldogs!” --Pat Britz ’90; former men’s soccer player

Big South Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. In the league's infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new levels. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidified Conference membership with the additions of High Point, Gardner-
Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. Over the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had two individual National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event. The BSC’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.

2006 Big South Champions Down but Never Out

CONWAY, S.C. - Tournament Most Valuable Player Rob Vernon hit a grand slam in the eighth inning as UNC Asheville overcame a 10 run deficit to win the Big South Conference Tournament 16-11 over Liberty on Saturday night. It is the Bulldogs (28-33) first ever Big South Championship in baseball and sends Asheville to its first ever NCAA Regional appearance. The baseball team becomes only the second UNC Asheville team to make a NCAA Tournament in any sport joining the 2003 men’s basketball team.
this season.
The Bulldogs sent 11 people to plate to score five runs on five hits to push their lead to 16-10 win in the top of the ninth. Arrington highlighted the inning with a three RBI double to left center. Liberty scored one in the bottom of the ninth to cut the lead to 1611 but that would be as close as they would get. UNC Ashevilles’s Alan DeRatt picked up his second win of the tournament and improves to 8-4, while the Flames’ Phillip Thompson took the loss, falling to 6-7 on the season.
“I give the guys a tremendous amount of credit,” said Stewart. We stuck together and never quit. This is a tremendous accomplishment, what we did this weekend. I could not be happier for these guys.”
With the win, UNC Asheville picks up the Big South’s automatic bid and records its school record 28th victory of the season.
The Flames (39-21) sent 13 men to the plate in the bottom of the second, scoring nine runs on eight hits to take the 9-0 lead. Chad Miller posted two RBI in the inning. Liberty added one run in the bottom of the third to push the lead to 10-0. With one out, Chad Miller moved to first on a walk and moved to second as Michael Just singled through the right side. Miller was caught stealing. Aaron Grijalva scored Just as he reached on an error. UNC Asheville moved four across in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 10-4. With one out, John Whited singled and moved to second on a single by Kyle Smith. Steve Burnich followed with a double to left field, plating Whited and moving Smith to third. Kevin Mattison was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Matt Henson grounded out to the shortstop to score Smith, moving Mattison to second and Burnich to third. Elliot Arrington followed with a single to left to plate Burnich and Mattison. The Bulldogs chipped away at LU’s lead in the top of sixth, adding one run to move the score to 10-5. Charles Pippitt led off the inning with a walk, and two batters later Burnich singled to right center to move Pippitt to third. Mattison singled to center field to plate Pippitt. It marked the 17th consecutive game in which Mattison has gotten a hit, one shy of the UNC Asheville record held by head coach Willie Stewart and Tony Campana. Asheville added another run in the top half of the seventh. Arrington led off with a walk and was moved to second on an Edmund Locklear walk. Vernon reached on a fieldier’s choice, moving Arrington to third. Pippitt hit a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Arrington. Asheville took its first lead of the game in the top of the eighth. With one away, Burnich was hit by a pitch and moved over on a single by Mattison. Henson singled to load the bases. Burnich scored on a groundout by Arrington, moving Mattison to third and Henson to second. Locklear followed with a walk to load the bases. Vernon followed with a grand slam to clear the bases, his seventh home run of the year and the second grand slam for the Bulldogs

UNC Asheville Players Active in Major Leagues (1)
Ty Wigginton 2009 Club Baltimore Orioles Former UNC Asheville baseball player Ty Wigginton begins his ninth year of service in the Major Leagues in the 2010 season. Ty will be a utility player for the Baltimore Orioles for the second time. The 2009 season was a frustrating one for Ty as he struggled in the first half of the year after coming to Baltimore from the Houston Astros. He finished the year with a .273 batting average with 11 home runs and 41 RBI. One of the big highlights of the year for him was when he hit two home runs against Derek Lowe of the Atlanta Braves in June. The Chula Vista, Calif. native hopes in 2010 to match his numbers from the 2008 season at Houston when he hit .285 with 23 home runs in just 386 at bats due to an earlyseason injury. Wigginton was named National League Player of the Week in August as he led the majors in home runs hit that month with 12. Ty enters the 2010 season with a career total of 121 home runs and 425 RBI with a .272 average. The Orioles are his fifth big league team after coming up with the New York Mets. Some of the highlights of his major league career were being the New York Mets starter at third base in 2003 and part of 2004 before the Mets called David Wright up. He was a fan favorite in New York for his hustling style of play and playing hard every day. Wigginton finished eighth in the Rookie of the Year voting in the National League in 2003. Ty was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the middle of the 2004 season so the Mets could get David Wright into the starting line-up. He moved from the Pirates to Tampa Bay for the 2006 and part of the 2007 season. Wigginton made a lot of fans in Tampa and was given a standing ovation by Tampa fans when was with Houston in a Spring Training game in 2008. Ty was a productive player at both Tampa Bay and Houston before being let go by the Astros. He didn’t have to wait long and signed a two-year deal with the Orioles in early 2009. “We need a player like Ty Wigginton,” stated Orioles play-by-play man Jim Hunter prior to his signing. “He’s a player who plays hard and our fans would love a guy like that.” Bulldog fans know all about Wigginton’s hard-charging ways. He played for UNC Asheville from 1996 through the 1998 season. His records at UNC Asheville include most doubles in a season with 26, most total bases in a season with 149 and most runs scored in a season with 67. In addition, he became the second player in school history to hit three home runs in a game with three against East Tennessee State and set a record for total bases in that game with 14.
www.uncabulldogs.com
Ty also became the first UNC Asheville baseball player to be named National Player of the Week when he was honored after hitting eight home runs and driving in 20 runs during a six-game span. He was named as a first team all-conference performer at shortstop that season. Wigginton was drafted by the New York Mets in the 17th round in 1998 and worked hard in the Mets’ minor league system before getting a call in May of 2002 to report to the big leagues. On May 16, 2002, UNC Asheville had its first player in the major leagues when Ty played for the Mets in San Diego. He is the only baseball player in school history to have his number retired when his jersey #5 was retired prior to the 2005 season. “We’re very proud of Ty Wigginton and what he means to UNC Asheville,” said first-year coach Tom Smith. “I knew Ty when he played here and he’s been nothing but supportive of our program. We’re always pulling for him and proud of what he’s accomplished.”
Wigginton hit 23 home runs and had 58 RBI for Houston in 2008.
Athletics Director Janet Cone, former head coach Willie Stewart, Ty Wigginton, and former Chancellor Jim Mullen retired Wigginton’s No. 5 on Jan. 15, 2005.

David Lost, but Goliath Knows He was in a Fight. Reprinted from Asheville Citizen-Times- June 3, 2006 Not every time a David takes on a Goliath is David going to come out on top. When UNCA’s baseball Bulldogs won their first-ever invitation to the NCAA baseball tournament, the foe they drew was Clemson, the second-ranked team in the country. UNCA knew they were taking the role of David facing a formidable Goliath -- in Goliath’s back yard, no less. Still, the Bulldogs did themselves proud by keeping it close in a 3-0 loss before bowing out of the double elimination tournament with a 5-4 loss to Mississippi State. The heroics started before the team made it to the Clemson Regional. The Bulldogs fought through the field to play in the Big South Conference baseball tournament final against Liberty. Down 10-0 after the third inning, the Bulldogs staged a remarkable rally, scoring 16 runs over the final five innings for a 16-11 victory and an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Holding a team like Clemson to three runs or fewer -- a feat opponents managed only seven times
against the Tigers -- was a victory in itself. The 5-4 loss to Mississippi State was closely contested, as the Bulldogs had the bases loaded in the ninth inning but were unable to tie or take the lead. In addition to an outstanding showing against bigger, moreestablished programs, UNCA has good news for next season. After posting a record of 11-42 in the 2005 campaign, the Bulldogs went 28-35 in 2006, and loses only one senior (Charles Pippitt) who played a major role in their success. Next season could be even bigger and brighter for the baseball Bulldogs. Congratulations are in order for the UNCA athletics program, which seems to be on an upswing. Improved facilities, an active athletic director and a taste of success bode well for the future. Said UNCA coach Willie Stewart, a former UNCA player and 2000 graduate, “It hurts to lose, and we’re never happy when we don’t win. But I’m proud of how we competed against two great baseball teams. “We’ve faced a lot of adversity this year, but we never quit. We never quit here, either. I could not be more proud of these guys.” Neither could we.

McCormick Field
McCormick Field
UNC Asheville plays a third of its home games at Historic McCormick Field. This season the home of the Single-A Asheville Tourists will host the Big South Baseball Championships.
McCormick Field is built into the side of of a hill and is surrounded by trees, making this a unique and charming place to take in a game. Although the field itself dates back to 1924, the grandstand was completely rebuilt before the 1992 season. The park features a brick exterior as well as a large cantilevered roof that provides covering for most of the seating. Because of the short dimensions of the field, the outfield walls are higher than normal, the tallest of which is the 36 ft right field wall. There are three distinct types of seating - the field box seats, the benches with backs, and the plain concrete sections. All seats are close to the action, though the netting that stretches all the way down the lines obstructs all the sightlines some. The concourse, which is behind the seating bowl (and thus out of view from the field) is actually underground in places due to the fact that the ballpark was built into the side of a hill. Part of the charm of McCormick Field comes from the setting. But part of it also comes from the atmosphere, which is very laid back. The current version of McCormick Field was built in 1992, but it replaced a much older version. The original incarnation of McCormick Field held its first baseball game in 1924, starting a rich and diverse history that includes visits from the likes of Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb as well as a brief stint as a race track in the 1950s. Perhaps the biggest reason that this place feels so authentic is that it was built to resemble, at least in some ways, the original version of itself. The original wooden grandstand was replaced with concrete and brick and the original roof, which sported view-blocking supports, was replaced with a cantilevered top. But, while the structure is more modern, the design remains decidedly old-fashioned. The biggest indication of this is the complete absence of luxury boxes. Even the press box is rather unobtrusive. Also, the presence of red brick throughout the park (including in the wall separating grandstand from field), provides a warm and comfortable touch.

UNC Asheville UNC Asheville Named a Best Buy in the “Fiske Guide to Colleges”
UNC Asheville continues to stand with some of the nation’s finest colleges in popular college rankings. The annual “Fiske Guide to Colleges” released its 2009 list of Best Buys of American and Canadian colleges earlier this month. UNC Asheville is alone among public colleges in Western North Carolina to earn a spot on the list. It is the 15th consecutive year that UNC Asheville has been named a Best Buy. The Fiske Guide praised UNC Asheville as “one of the best educational bargains in the country,” citing rigorous academics, small classes, internships, service-learning, undergraduate research and Integrated Liberal Studies, the University’s enhanced general academic curriculum. In addition, for the fifth consecutive year, UNC Asheville’s Environmental Studies Department was named to the Fiske Guide’s listing of preprofessional programs with “unusual strength” in preparing students for careers. The guidebook says, “All the right ingredients for a superior college experience lie in wait at Asheville: strong academics, dedicated professors, and an administration that continues to push for excellence.” Professors drew high marks for their accessibility, passion and experience. “I don’t think I can voice how awesome the teaching has been during my four years here,” said one senior interviewed by the guide. “They make class interesting and are always helping students outside of class.” Residence life, outdoor recreational opportunities, athletics, Founders Day, homecoming and Greenfest were among features commended for rounding out the college experience. UNC Asheville Named a National Innovator by U.S. News & World Report; Road Trip” Feature Story Highlights Faculty, Undergraduate Research U.S. News & World Report has awarded high marks to UNC Asheville for its innovations, undergraduate research, and affordability in the new edition of America’s Best Colleges, available online today. UNC Asheville also had the honor of being one of just 24 colleges in the nation to be profiled in the guide’s “Road Trips” section. UNC Asheville is ranked fifth among 17 liberal arts colleges in the nation as a “School to Watch” for having recently made the most promising and innovative changes. Davidson College was the only other college in North Carolina included as a liberal arts “School to Watch.” The “Schools to Watch” is a new ranking this year for U.S. News & World Report. In spring 2008, U.S. News & World Report asked college presidents, provosts and admissions deans to nominate up to 10 colleges in the nation that are making improvements and innovations in academics, faculty, students, campus life, diversity or facilities. The 70 colleges and universities that received the most nominations, those deemed to be schools everyone should be watching, were grouped by academic classification -- national universities, liberal arts colleges, master’s level universities, and baccalaureate colleges. “It is always affirming for all of us at UNC Asheville to be recognized for the work we do for our students,” said UNC Asheville Chancellor Anne Ponder. “Our interdisciplinary Humanities Program and Undergraduate Research Program set national standards. Our recent redesign of our general education curriculum, known as integrative liberal studies, and plans for our new N.C. Center for Health & Wellness and Craft Campus carry forward that spirit.” UNC Asheville’s Undergraduate Research Program was among a handful to be listed by U.S. News & World Report as among the best regarded in the nation. This section of the guide lists eight academic programs that contain “outstanding examples of academic programs that are believed to lead to student success.” UNC Asheville’s Undergraduate Research Program is one among only 33 colleges and universities in the nation to be included in the Undergraduate Research/Creative Projects category. UNC Asheville, which founded the National Council for Undergraduate Research, has made this roster every year since U.S. News & World Report started the listing seven years ago. U.S. News & World Report also compiled a list of colleges and universities whose students in the class of 2007 graduated with the heaviest and lightest debt loads. UNC Asheville ranks 24th among the 25 liberal arts colleges, both private and public, whose students graduated with the least debt. It is the only liberal arts college in North Carolina to make the list.

Dr. Anne Ponder
Janet Cone
Chancellor
Director of Athletics
Dr. Anne Ponder became the sixth Chancellor of the University of North Carolina Asheville in October 2005. Chancellor Ponder is a native of Asheville and a lifelong educator. She earned her bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in English from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She began her academic career at Elon College (now Elon University) in North Carolina, where she was the first woman and first pre-tenure professor to receive the Daniels-Danieley Award for Excellence in Teaching. During her nine years at Elon, she taught English and communications, and founded the college’s Honors Program. She later joined Guilford College in North Carolina, where she was an associate professor of English and interdisciplinary studies and served as associate academic dean. At Kenyon College in Ohio, she served as professor of English and drama, academic dean, adding ‘vice president for information technology’ to her portfolio. In 1995, she was selected to become president at Colby-Sawyer College, a private liberal arts college in New London, N.H., where she would serve for ten years. At UNC Asheville, Chancellor Ponder has led a campuswide collaboration resulting in a five-year Strategic Plan and then implemented an administrative reorganization that focuses University resources on the Strategic Plan’s highest priorities. As part of that strategy, the UNC Asheville campus now serves as the new national headquarters for the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges. Chancellor Ponder is a nationally known expert on institutional effectiveness, strategic planning, and fundraising and resource development. She has been a frequent faculty member of Harvard University’s Institutes for Higher Education, and has written a chapter on strategic planning for the book “Leading America’s Branch Campuses,” edited by Samuel Schuman and published by the American Council on Education. In addition to serving the University, Chancellor Ponder is a member of the Mission Hospitals Audit Committee, and the United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County Board of Directors. She also serves as a member of the Asheville Community and Economic Development Alliance. Chancellor Ponder is the daughter of Eleanor Ponder, and the late Herschel Ponder, both of whom trace their Asheville family roots back to the 1780’s. She is married to Christopher Brookhouse, an award-winning writer and publisher previously on the English faculty at UNC Chapel Hill.
Janet R. Cone is in her sixth year as Director of Athletics at UNC Asheville. Since arriving in 2004, she has led the Department of Athletics through a fiveyear strategic plan that has resulted in improvements in the student-athlete experience, resources for coaches and staff, facilities, competition levels and increased community support. Recently Chancellor Anne Ponder appointed Cone to the newly-created position of Senior Administrator for University Enterprises. In this position, Cone will oversee the North Carolina Center for Health and Wellness, manage specific community relationships and serve as a member of UNC Asheville’s fundraising team. She will continue as a member of the Chancellor’s Senior Staff and assist in more closely aligning the university with the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement. Student-Athletes have excelled in the classroom under Cone’s leadership. In 2004, she created the Athletic Director’s 3.0 + Club that recognizes all student-athletes who make a 3.0 or better grade point average each semester. More than 500 student-athletes have made the club during Cone’s five years, and in 2008-09, a record number of student-athletes earned that distinction. During that same time period, more than 400 studentathletes have been named to the Big South Presidential Honor Roll, and in 2008-09 more than 50 percent of UNC Asheville’s student-athletes have earned this impressive academic distinction. The Department of Athletics has also successfully hosted two Big South Conference Tournaments that produced revenue for the school. Cone has overseen construction projects that will dramatically improve the facilities in which UNC Asheville’s Bulldog student-athletes compete and train. (1) The North Carolina Center for Health and Wellness/Kimmel Arena is presently under construction. Funded partly through a $35 million state appropriation, Cone helped raise more than seven million dollars in private funds to construct the Kimmel Arena, a major convocation space that will accommodate larger group events than the campus has been able to host before. Among other things, this will allow the university to host its own graduation on campus, attract major venue speakers and performances, and will secure a future home for men’s and women’s basketball teams. (2) Renovation and repairs to the Karl Straus Track began in the spring of 2009 and should be complete by the summer of 2010. Cone helped raised more than one million dollars in private funding for the track project. (3) Cone has also negotiated a partnership with Crown Plaza Hotel and Resort for construction of a new Bulldog tennis facility which will have indoor courts, composition courts and six hard courts that will be competed and ready for our tennis team in the fall of 2009. An additional six courts will be constructed at a later date. The 2007-08 year was another outstanding year for Cone and the Department of Athletics. The men’s basketball team was co-regular season champions of the Big South Conference and earned a bid to the National Invitational Tournament, making UNC Asheville the first men’s basketball team in Big South history to receive a bid to the NIT. Cone helped the department successfully host the Big South Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament and Women’s Basketball Tournament in back-to-back weekends. In October 2007, Cone was named the 2007 Division I-AAA Administrator of the Year by the National Association

UNC Asheville of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators. Chancellor Ponder was delighted to see Cone receive the award. “Janet Cone’s inspirational leadership has set a very high standard for our student-athletes and our coaches, all of whom continue to be winners both on and off the field,” stated Ponder. “We are thrilled that she is being recognized in this way for her vision, her energy, and her tenacity, qualities our University benefits from each and every day.” Cone has promulgated a significant increase in corporate sponsorships and Bulldog Athletic Association donations, critical to an organization that is not allowed to receive state funds of any kind. She has also overseen a new partnership with the Asheville City and Buncombe County Parks and Recreation Departments, an improved Athletics web-site, and the implementation of internet broadcasts and videostreaming for six different sports. Cone has been tapped by the NCAA and the Big South Conference to serve on several key committees. In the Big South, she is on the committees for Budget, Compliance, Ad Hoc Committee on Publicity and Promotions, Baseball, Women’s Basketball and Men’s Soccer and Tennis. In the spring of 2006, Cone was named to the NCAA Women’s Basketball Issues Committee and was recently appointed Chair. In July 2006, she was one of just 14 female athletic administrators to be picked by the NCAA/NACWAA to attend The Institute of Athletics Executives in Denver. In September of 2008, Cone began a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Leadership Council. In the spring of 2006, she was named as an Outstanding Executive Manager by the Asheville-Buncombe Excellence in Public Service. In the summer of 2006, she helped lead a group of community leaders to bring the Big South Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament to UNC Asheville’s Justice Center in 2007 and 2008. Cone also initiated the “Our Turn to Play” women’s luncheon for local business, civic, and community leaders. Cone was recognized as one of “10 Women to know in Western North Carolina.” In March 2009, she earned a YWCA Twin Award for her leadership skills. Cone is a member of the Clear Channel Local Advisory Committee, and the task force leader for the formation of the new Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission. Cone was born and raised in Summerville, South Carolina. She was a four-year letter winner on the basketball team and was an all-conference performer at Summerville HS for two years. Cone is a member of that schools’ Athletics Hall of Fame. She graduated magna cum laude from Furman University in 1978 and was named Physical Education Student of the Year while lettering in basketball and field hockey as an undergraduate. While earning her Masters from the University of South Carolina in 1986, she completed her studies with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Cone came to Asheville from Samford University where she served as the first head women’s basketball coach in 1996. She coached the Bulldogs for five seasons and, in 1999-2000, the team posted a 19-10 record. Cone was named Assistant Athletics Director before being promoted to Associate Athletics Director in 2003. Prior to Samford, Cone served as the first full time Assistant Athletics Director, and the head women’s basketball and volleyball coaches at Saint Leo University in Florida. ROCKY
Since UNC Asheville first fielded athletics teams in the 1930s (then known as Biltmore College), the bulldog has been its mascot. Early students chose the bulldog for its fierce and tenacious reputation. In the decades that have followed, the bulldog has become a beloved symbol of our University. In 1948, “Puck,” arrived on campus and began a tradition of live bulldog mascots that lasted into the 1980s. Puck, named after the character in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, was followed by Puck II and in the 1960s by Chug-alug. In the 1980s the campus welcomed Winston, named after British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, both for his bulldogged resolve as well as his appearance. Winston appeared for only a year and the tradition of a live mascot fell out of use. This year, thanks to a group of student organizers, UNC Asheville will welcome a new bulldog mascot to the University community. Alumni couple, Alexis Johnson (’97) and Ed Johnson (’96), also a member of the math faculty, are his keepers. Still a puppy, it is anticipated that “Rocky” will make his first public appearance after the start of the New Year. The name “Rocky” was suggested by staff member Nancy Williams during a naming contest sponsored by the Athletics Department in 1995. Though the rumor has often been that the name came from Sylvester Stallone’s famous character, Rocky Balboa, which is based on the American prize fighter Rocky Marciano, the name was chosen because it means steadfast, much like the mountains that surround campus. Ironically, the name “Rocky,” which is of English origin, is a derivation of the name “Roch” (also Rocco and Roque) after St. Roch, the Patron Saint of Dogs. In addition to the live bulldogs, the UNC Asheville mascot has also been depicted by an army of costumed students. Since the 1960s, students dressed as the bulldog have rallied the fans at thousands of games in support of Bulldog Athletics. The present incarnation of Rocky was introduced during the 20062007 season and is the first to accurately reflect the logo image of the bulldog used on signs and in print publications. That image, introduced during the 2004-05 season is the fifth official incarnation of the UNC Asheville bulldog logo. In the late 1990s, the image of the bulldog, or “Rocky,” was immortalized in aluminum through a gift by the Class of 1998. Sculpted by Matt West (‘00) and modeled after a canine friend of the University, Pete “Bubba” McGill, the statue of Rocky stands in front of the Justice Center as a sentinel over campus. Careful observers will note a chipped tooth and a torn ear, signs of his ferocity. Despite his tough outward appearance, the statue of Rocky is beloved by fans. Continuing a tradition begun by the Class of 1998, each year, during convocation and commencement, freshman and seniors rub his head for good luck before going to the ceremonies. Seniors are also often spotted getting their picture made riding Rocky in the days leading up to graduation. UNC Asheville is proud of its bulldog heritage. Today, Rocky, in all of his forms serves as a rallying point for fans far and wide.

Important NCAA Terms
Frequently Asked Questions
Prospective Student Athlete: Any student who has started classes for the 9th grade. Once a person becomes a prospect, NCAA rules define how college coaches can interact with that prospect.
The NLI is a contract between a prospect and an institution. By signing a NLI, a prospect agrees to attend UNC Asheville for at least one academic year. In exchange, UNC Asheville must provide athletics financial aid for one academic year. The NLI early signing period is November 11-18, 2009 and the late signing period is April 14 - May 19, 2010. For more information, visit the NLI website at www.national-letter. org.
Recruiting: Any solicitation of a prospective studentathlete or a prospective student-athlete’s relatives by an institutional staff member or by a representative of athletics interests for the purpose of securing the prospective student-athlete’s enrollment and ultimate participation in the institution’s intercollegiate athletics program. Receiving mail: When a prospect is in the 9th and 10th grades, NCAA rules allow colleges only to mail a questionnaire and summer camp brochure to a prospect. After September 1 of the prospect’s junior year, coaches may provide a prospect with the following: letters, media guide, schedule card, copy of newspaper articles and electronic mail. Telephone calls: Coaches may not call a prospect before July 1 following the prospect’s junior year in high school, thereafter coaches may call a prospect once per week. Contact: NCAA rules define a contact as a face-to-face interaction with a prospect and/or his/her parents off UNC Asheville’s campus by a coach. NCAA sets a contact period for coaches to contact basketball prospects. This is the only time coaches can meet with a prospect away from UNC Asheville. A college coach may not have any contact with prospects or prospect’s parents during summer certified events. Contact Period: A contact period is that period of time when it is permissible for authorized athletics department staff members to make in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts and evaluations.
What is the difference between an official visit and unofficial visit? After opening day of classes of the prospect’s senior year, he/she can take five official visits to different Division I or II schools. Before the visit, the prospect must register with the NCAA Clearinghouse, and be placed on UNC Asheville’s institutional request list. The prospect must also present a high school transcript and proof of SAT, ACT, PACT, PSAT test to UNC Asheville. Official visits are paid in part and extended by UNC Asheville coaches only. Prospects may make an unlimited number of unofficial visits and may visit UNC Asheville anytime except during a dead period. Prospects are solely responsible for all expenses of unofficial visits. However, prospects may receive three complimentary admissions to any home athletic contest, excluding a Big South Conference Post Season Tournament. What is the NCAA Clearinghouse? It is the agency that certifies a prospect’s eligibility and Amateurism for Division I and II. A prospect should register with the NCAA Clearinghouse at the beginning of his/her senior year in high school. Applications are available in the prospect’s guidance office or visit the NCAA Clearinghouse website at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net for more information.
Evaluation: NCAA rules define an evaluation as an offcampus activity to assess the academic qualifications or athletics ability of a prospect. NCAA sets an evaluation period, at which no contact may occur between a prospect or prospect’s parents and a coach. A coach may write or telephone prospects and/or their parents. A prospect may visit UNC Asheville during this period. Academic credentials: Prospects should check with their high school’s guidance office to see if they are taking classes that will meet NCAA initial eligibility (Clearinghouse) standards. A prospect will need to take either the ACT or SAT for NCAA certification. Prospect’s entering college on or after August 1, 2008 must meet the 16 core-course rule. Quiet Period: During this period, a college coach may not have any off-campus contact or visit any high schools to evaluate a prospect’s academic or athletic abilities. A prospect may visit UNC Asheville during this period. Dead period: The period when a college coach may not have any contact off-campus or on UNC Asheville’s campus. A coach may write or telephone prospects or prospect’s parents. A prospect may not visit UNC Asheville during this time period. What is the National Letter of Intent (NLI)?
