2011 BULLDOGS BASKETBALL: The UNC Asheville women’s basketball program showed improvement last year and the Bulldogs are looking to build on that foundation this season. And they’ll try to achieve that improvement in a new arena. Asheville basketball will now play its home games in the state-of-the-art Kimmel Arena this year. The 3,200-seat facility is a big upgrade for the Bulldog program. Asheville coach Betsy Blose is looking forward to playing home games in Kimmel. “Playing our games in our new arena has everyone excited,” declared Blose. “We want to establish some new traditions playing at Kimmel. There’s a real sense of pride in our program right now, and we’re anxious to play some games here.” Last season, the Bulldogs were coming off an 8-22 campaign and not much was expected from Asheville going into the 2010-11 season. Blose’s club surprised a lot of people with a 12-win season and sixth-place finish in Big South Conference play. The Bulldogs were road warriors last season with seven wins, while going 4-4 in BSC road games. However, Asheville struggled at home with a 1-7 mark. “We want to build on what we accomplished last year,” Blose admitted.“Our team made strides and showed a lot of improvement from where we were the previous year.

Lindsey Thompson is the Bulldogs’ only senior on this year’s roster. She enjoyed a solid junior campaign and finished the year with a 10.8 scoring average, while leading the team in three-pointers made with 62.

LOOKING TO BOUNCE BACK “Tacey has the heart of a champion. She is the most conditioned player I’ve ever coached,” declared Blose. “She’s small but plays big. Tacey will do a great job of getting people the basketball as she’s player who thinks pass first. She’s also an excellent defensive player. Our fans are really going to enjoy watching her play.” Another local product is Shonese Jones from Brevard. The freshman guard is also 5-2 like Trammell but enjoyed a spectacular prep career for the Blue Devil program as she scored more than 2,000 points. “We like local players and are delighted to have Shonese as a part of our program,” stated Blose. “She can flat-out score. Shonese can score from anywhere on the court, including making three-pointers. We believe she has the potential to be a great defender.” Brittany Gwyn will join the Asheville program from High Point Central. The prep program is one of the best in the state. Gwyn is a 5-7 athlete who could help the Bulldog program right away. “We’re delighted to get another player from a great high school program like High Point Central,” said Blose. “I project Brittany to be one of our best Kelli Riles defenders. nents this season.” Junior Gentry Manley walked on to the Bulldogs last year and impressed everyone with her hustle and desire. Manley played in 12 games a year ago, but that figure could go up this season. “Gentry is a player who is going to find a way to play. She plays hard all the time and fits into what we’re doing,” explained Blose. “Gentry brings us some toughness and somehow you’ll see her on the floor this season.” Freshman Jeannie Buckner is home-school product from Johns Island, S.C. She committed to the Bulldog program last year, and Blose believes the 6-0 rookie can be a factor right off the bat. “Jeannie is the most prepared player I’ve ever coached,” explained Blose. “She’s physically ready to play. Jeannie will have to adjust to the college game a little bit but we’re excited to have her. She can shoot the three and can give us some size on the perimeter.” Leah Wormack is a 6-1 freshman forward from Cumberland, Md. She played at Allegany High School and enjoyed a top prep career.

Before UNC Asheville: completed her career as the school’s all-time leader in career points for both boys and girls with 2,112 points. Her career point total is seventh best all-time in Western North Carolina. As a senior, Jones averaged 24 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals per game. She has been named the Hendersonville Times-News Player of the Year for three consecutive years. Jones all earned All-Region and All-Conference honors this past year. She was Brevard’s MVP for four consecutive years.

BETSY BLOSE

HEAD COACH JAMES MADISON, 1984 • 10th SEASON Betsy Blose begins her 10th year as head coach of the UNC Asheville women’s basketball program. She is the school’s all-time winningest coach with 128 victories and has produced winning seasons in four of the last seven years. Blose has led the Bulldog program to a trip to the NCAA Tournament and been named Big South Conference Coach-of-the-Year once during her career at Asheville. Asheville showed tremendous improvement last year under Blose’s leadership. She guided the Bulldogs to 12 victories and a sixth-place finish in the Big South Conference after being picked to finish in eighth place. Blose coached two players, who scored their 1,000th career points in Kendall Shepard and Lindsey Montgomery.

In the 2004-05 season, the Bulldogs reached the Big South Conference championship game for just the second time in school history before falling to eventual “Sweet 16” participant Liberty. UNC Asheville finished with an 18-12 overall record and third place finish in the league with an 8-6 mark. The 18 wins was the second highest since the school went Division I. The 2003-04 season was one of the best stories in college basketball. UNC Asheville finished with a 19-9 overall record and posted an amazing 16-game improvement over the previous season’s 3-25 mark. The Bulldogs were the most improved team in the nation and their turnaround was the third best in Division I history. In addition, Asheville finished in second place in the Big

In the 2008-09 season, the Bulldogs struggled through a 1020 record as Asheville was hit hard with the injury bug. However, her team still managed to earn a win over Southern Conference champion Western Carolina and produced seven Big South Conference wins, just a game out of third place. In the 2007-08 season, she watched a young team battle through an injury-riddled season. The Bulldogs finished with seven healthy players but still managed to take second-seeded Radford into double overtime in the Big South Tournament. The 2006-07 season was a special season as Asheville won its first ever Big South Women’s Basketball Championship.. The Dogs ran off six-straight victories, including the first victory at Liberty since the 1989-90 season. Asheville also picked up its first victory over an ACC school with a 58-53 win at Wake Forest. Asheville not only set a school record for wins but also set records for most points, most free throws made and attempted, most threepointers made and attempted, and most blocked shots in a season. The Bulldogs finished 2005-06 with a 15-13 overall record, marking the third straight winning season. It is the first time that’s been accomplished at UNC Asheville in more than 20 years.

South Conference with a 9-5 mark; easily the best finish ever for the Bulldogs and the nine league wins also set a school record. Not bad for a club picked to finish in last place in Big South Preseason Polls. Blose has preached defense and rebounding everywhere she has coached and that dedication became evident during the 200304 season as the Bulldogs finished number one in the Big South and ranked seventh nationally in points allowed on defense as their stingy defense allowed opponents to score just 54.8 points per game.The Bulldogs were second in the Big South in rebounding margin grabbing 4.8 more rebounds than their opponents. Prior to coming to Asheville, Blose did an outstanding job at Shepherd University, located in Shepherdstown, W.Va. where she inherited a program in the fall of 1995 that hadn’t had a winning season in eight years. It took her just three seasons to post a winning record as the Rams compiled a 93-48 (.660) overall record in her final five seasons. She had a career record of 114-77 at Shepherd in seven seasons. The James Madison graduate led the Rams to the school’s first-ever West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title during the 1998-99 season. In the 2000-01 season, she guided the Rams to a school record 20-7 mark as her team led the league in scoring defense (58.7 ppg) and in rebound margin (+8.6). She earned her 100th career coaching victory on December 28, 2001 and her team won the Sam Marchio Team Sportsmanship award three times during her tenure. The Harrisonburg,Va. native was inducted into the Shepherd Hall of Fame in 2006.

Blose began her college coaching career at her alma mater, James Madison University in 1987 where she served as an assistant coach with the Dukes program for eight seasons. She helped lead the school to three trips to the NCAA tournament and three Colonial Conference championships. Blose was on the staff in 1988 and 1991 when James Madison advanced to the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA tournament Blose coached at Altavista (Va.) High School in 1984 and led the school to an amazing 69-5 record in three seasons. Blose led Altavista to Seminole District Championships for three straight years and was the District Coach of the Year twice. In 1987, she was named as a Virginia High School League All-Star coach. This past summer, Blose was one of 28 coaches to take part in the Center for Coaching Excellence that was held at Columbia University. Later in the summer, she was allowed to take part in a mock bracketing seminar hosted by the NCAA in Indianapolis. Blose earned two awards in 2005 as she was honored by the YWCA as a TWIN honoree for her leadership in the Asheville community. She was also honored by her Alma Mater, James Madison, as the Outstanding Alumni from the Kinesiology Department. A 1984 graduate of James Madison, Blose was a four-year letterwinner in women’s basketball from 1980 to 1984. She was the program’s team captain during her junior and senior seasons. Blose graduated magna cum laude in 1984 and was awarded the Johnston Senior Award for Excellence in Kinesiology.

TIFFANY GWYNN ASSISTANT COACH LIBERTY, 1998 • 3rd SEASON

Tiffany Gwynn is in her third year as an assistant coach with the UNC Asheville program. She began her duties in July of 2009. “I am so pleased that Tiffany is a part of our coaching staff,” stated Blose. “She has really done a great job with our program since she got here.” Gwynn had been at Hampton for four years and was the program’s associate head coach her last two seasons. She helped lead the Pirate program to three straight winning seasons. Gwynn’s primary duties at Hampton included recruiting and player development. Prior to her time at Hampton, she served as an assistant coach at the University of Southern Mississippi from 19992004 under Rick Reeves. Gwynn assisted with recruiting, scouting, game preparations and player development. She played and graduated at fellow Big South member Liberty University. Gwynn was a part of the Flames squad’ that captured the 1997 and 1998 Big South Conference championships. The 1998 squad finished the regular season with a 28-0 record and defeated the Bulldogs in the Big South title game. She was an assistant coach at Liberty during the 1998-99 campaign when the Flames won their third straight Big South championship. “As a former player at Liberty University, she is familiar with the Big South Conference,” declared Blose. “She has extensive Division I recruiting experience and brings a high level of energy and enthusiasm to our program.” Gwynn graduated from Liberty with a bachelor degree in Communications. She has one son, Tobias who is seven.

CURTIS METTEN ASSISTANT COACH DAVIS & ELKINS, 1999 • 3rd SEASON

Curtis Metten begins his third year on thet UNC Asheville women’s basketball coaching staff. He joined the program in July of 2009. “We are delighted that Curtis is a part of our coaching staff,” stated UNC Asheville women’s basketball coach Betsy Blose.“I’ve known him for more than 10 years and he brings loads of college coaching and recruiting experience to our program.” Metten served as an assistant men’s basketball coach for two years at his alma mater, Davis & Elkins College, before coming to Asheville. Previously to his time at Davis & Elkins, Metten had been an assistant coach for the women’s basketball program at Eastern Kentucky University for six years (2000-06). He was a part of two Ohio Valley Conference championship teams and helped the Colonels advance to the WNIT for the first time in 2002, earning the program’s first ever postseason win and advancing to the second round. He also helped the school reach the NCAA Tournament in 2005 as the Colonels won 18 straight games to close out the season and win the OVC Tournament. EKU earned a 12th seed,. Metten was a two-sport standout at Davis & Elkins. He was a four-year starter for the basketball team where he saw action at every position. He was also the starting shortstop/centerfielder for the school’s baseball team, leading the Senators to the 1995 WVIAC Northern Division Championship.

LAUREN POWELL

ASSISTANT COACH WESTERN CAROLINA, 2009 • 2nd SEASON Lauren Powell begins her second season as an assistant coach for the women’s basketball team. Powell recently completed a stellar career for the Western Carolina, leaving the program as the career three-point leader with 214. She brings with her a tradition of winning, with three straight 20-win seasons as a Catamount player, as well as a 2007 Southern Conference regular-season title and a 2009 Southern Conference Tournament championship.

Powell is ranked seventh at WCU in scoring for a career with 1,378 points. She was thrice named to the Southern Conference Winter All-Academic Team and was also a member of the Catamount squads that were named to the WBCA Academic Top-25 the last three years. Powell graduated in 2009 with a degree in Nutrition and Dietetics at Western Carolina and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Health Education at Western Carolina University. A native of Asheville, Powell played for Asheville High School prior to coming to Western Carolina, winning three consecutive North Carolina High g School State Championships. p p

DANA WAGNER STUDENT ASSISTANT COACH

Dana Wagner, a two-year letterwinner on the UNC Asheville women’s basketball team the past two years, will work this year with the program as a student-assistant coach. Wagner knocked down 23 treys in her two-year career and went 18-of-19 from the free throw line. She was a perfect 12-of-12 from the line in her junior year. Her top game was a 16-point performance against Lees-McRae as she helped lead the Bulldogs to a victory.

The Wisconsin native came to Asheville after an outstanding two-year junior college career at Madison Area Technical College. She led the school with a 17.6 scoring average and helped lead MATC to an appearance in the junior college championship game. Wagner completed her career with 1,044 points. She was named as a first team AllAmerican along with earning All-Conference, All-Region and All-State honors.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Junior guard Lindsey Thompson scored a career-high 26 points while fellow Bulldog Kendall Shepard tied her career-high for assists with eight as the UNC Asheville women’s basketball team earned a 95-76 victory over USC Upstate on Tuesday evening at Justice Center.

“I’m really proud of how hard we played and how we stuck together,” said Asheville head coach Betsy Blose. “This win ranks right up there with some wins we’ve had. Assistant coach Curtis Metten drew up the play we for Kendall to be the one to take the shot.”

Four Bulldogs scored in double figures including Shepard, who scored 19 for the second consecutive game. Breaira Barksdale scored 15 to go along with her six assists and Kelli Riles scored 12 while leading the team in rebounds with eight. Asheville improves to 3-1 on the season with the win.

Lindsey Thompson led the Blue & White in scoring with 24 points with Shepard chipping in 19, none bigger than her last second shot. Forward Kelli Riles recorded her second double-double in as many games with 13 points and 12 rebounds while Blaylock scored 11 to help the Bulldogs improve to 2-1 on the season.

“We really raised the tempo in the game and took them out of what they wanted to do,” said Asheville head coach Betsy Blose. “We got contributions from so many people. Lindsey Thompson is getting better and better each week and all of the kids are starting to buy into our style of play.”

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The UNC Asheville women’s basketball team fell to Marquette University 75-46 on Saturday evening at the Al McGuire Center as the Golden Eagles’ Courtney Weibel set the school record for 3-pointers made in a game, hitting eight treys to lead all players with 24 points in the contest.

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The UNC Asheville women’s basketball picked up another Big South Conference victory on Monday evening as they defeated the Winthrop Lady Eagles 66-61 at Winthrop Coliseum. The Bulldogs led the entire way but had to withstand a furious comeback attempt by the Lady Eagles who finished the game on a 20-to-6 run.

LYNCHBURG, Va. – On a night where UNC Asheville senior forward Lindsey Montgomery reached 1,000 points for her career, the Bulldogs dropped a Big South Conference contest with league-leading Liberty on Friday evening falling by the score of 72-58 at the Vines Center on the campus of the Lady Flames.

Asheville Falls To GWU at Big South Championship

HIGH POINT, N.C. – In the final regular season game of the year for both squads the High Point University women’s basketball team exploded for over 100 points against UNC Asheville, posting a 106-58 victory over the Bulldogs in Big South Conference action.

HIGH PONT, N.C. – For the second year in a row the UNC Asheville women’s basketball faced off against Gardner-Webb in the Advanced Auto Parts Big South Conference Championship. For the second year in a row Gardner-Webb was able to slip past the Blue & White, earning a 69-58 victory over the Bulldogs on Friday evening at the Millis Center.

The Panthers (15-14, 9-7 BSC) tied a Big South record for made 3-pointers in a game connecting on 18 treys. The record was set earlier this season by Charleston Southern against Asheville on Feb. 19. Cheyenne Parker came off the bench to score 21 points for the Panthers while Amy Dodd added 20 to the High Point total. Parker also had a game-high 16 rebounds to earn the double-double.

“We’ve had a lot of great games with Gardner-Webb this season,” said Asheville head coach Betsy Blose. “We just had a couple of stretches in the first and second halves where we let them get away from us. Our kids showed great effort and great poise. We just didn’t get it done tonight.”

Overall, five players scored in double figures for the Panthers with the High Point Asheville got a career-high 28 points from senior point guard Kendall Shepard, defense recording 14 blocks against Asheville.
